Pham Ngoc Vien, general director of the Vietnam Professional Football Company (VPF) hopes this year’s season, which kicked off on January 4,will be one for the record books for both the team and fans.
On the occasion of the new Lunar Year Vien sat down with a VOV reporter to share his hopes for the upcoming season and what it means to both the fans and team.

Following are key excerpts from the interview.

What in your opinion were the strengths and weaknesses of last season?

Mr. Vien: 2014 was an important transitional year for Vietnamese football teams. We collaborated with the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) to build a standard list featuring criterions such as professional skills, financial capacity facilities and legal bases for clubs.

This is the first time all football clubs attending the V-League 2015 were granted a license based on the above criterions.
Football fans have scored spectacular goals in first matches of V-league 2015. The number of spectators coming to stadiums increased to average 8,000 viewers per match with enhanced security.

The V-League 2015 has kicked off with positive signals, what do you expect from this season?

Mr. Vien: We hope that each matche of the new season will be a “festival” in localities. Stadiums are always crowded especially those in Quang Ninh or Hai Phong.

This season, V-League clubs have intensified their efforts to lure more fans, and provide an inspiration for their players.

Some clubs have issued free ticket or sent players to training centres for exchange matches. The VPF has for the first time spent US$50 million supporting each group. We are set to vote the best fan club every month with a cash prize of VND20 million ( more than US$960) to enlist support from fans.

Along with security work, do you think that we should focus on raising awareness of football players to prevent negative phenomena?

Mr. Vien: That’s right. Working groups are set up to to introduce football players, team managers and coaches to professional football regulations.

Apart from improving quality of the tournament, footballers need to raise their educational awareness to ensure a fairVietnamese football.

Besides HAGL, Song Lam Nghe An (SLNA), Hanoi T&T and Viettel are also seen as one of the good training centres. However, other clubs still lack infrastructure facilities and expenses for footballer training.

The man prevented from getting on a Paris Metro train by racist Chelsea fans on Tuesday has suggested he is unlikely to take up the club’s invitation to come to Stamford Bridge.

Video footage circulated on social media this week showed a group of Blues supporters twice pushing a man named by Le Parisien as Souleymane S. out of their train carriage at Richelieu Drouot station prior to their club’s 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain at Parc des Princes.

Chelsea have suspended three fans as a result of investigations into the incident and confirmed on Friday that they had written to Souleymane to apologise and invite him and his family to next month’s return leg at Stamford Bridge.

“We feel ashamed and we want to apologise to the gentleman,” Mourinho told reporters at his pre-match press conference. “Even if he doesn’t like football, put him in the director’s box, people will give him a reaction and he will realise that Chelsea is completely the opposite of what happened.

“I’m sure he will get a fantastic reaction, in a way where the fans can express how sad they were about it.”

But speaking to Le Parisien, Souleymane responded: “I appreciate Mr Mourinho’s invitation, but I can’t get my head around being in a stadium at the moment.”

Chelsea fans in fresh racism storm

A group of Blues supporters are alleged to have indulged in racist chanting at St Pancras station on Wednesday evening as they returned from Paris

983282_heroa
British Transport Police are appealing for witnesses as they investigate racist chanting by men believed to be Chelsea fans returning from Tuesday’s Champions League away clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

The chanting was heard at St Pancras train station in London on Wednesday evening, the day after the Blues earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Parc des Princes.

Superintendent Gill Murray said: “The racist chanting was reported by a member of the public who was disgusted by the behaviour of the men who had travelled on the 18:40 service from Paris Gare du Nord.

“The men shouted as they walked through the station having alighted from the train a short time earlier.

“If you travelled on the train from Paris or were at the station and have information which can assist our investigation I would urge you to get in touch as a matter of urgency.”

It is estimated that the striker, who has been voted the ‘best player of the year’ thrice, pocketed about VND30 billion (US$1.4 million) after being transferred three times in the V-League, the nation’s top football tournament.

After playing for four years for hometown Song Lam Nghe An, Vinh joined Ha Noi T&T in 2008 with a record transfer fee of VND8 billion ($375,000), apart from his salary of VND14 million per month, three times higher than what he got from the previous club.

Four years later, Vinh made headlines when he moved to Ha Noi FC, who paid him a fee of VND13 billion ($609,500) and a monthly salary of VND70 million ($3,300).

However, he stayed there for just a year before returning to Song Lam Nghe An under a two-year loan contract.

During this time, he travelled to Japan and played for Consodale Sapporo in J-League 2 for five months. The forward took home about $60,000.

Vinh ended his contract with Song Lam Nghe An in 2014 and sought his last contract at the age of 30.

Just a few days before V-League 1 kicked off in January, Vinh signed a three-year contract with former winner Becamex Binh Duong, who paid him about VND8 billion ($375,000).

The amount, which does not include his salary, is the highest among Vietnamese sportspersons and could remain a record for several years.

Born in 1985, Vinh grew up in a family where his father was in jail and his mother worked very hard to raise four children.

He started playing football at the age of 14. His career in Song Lam Nghe An was not an easy one.

However, his hard-working nature and steely will helped him a lot.

Vinh was called to the U18 team three years later, and then the U20 team, where he was made the captain.

A year later, he joined the U23 squad and took part in the first-ever Southeast Asian Games held in Viet Nam.

At 20, he was the youngest player to be promoted to the first team of Song Lam Nghe An where his outstanding performance was noted. He then booked a place in the national team.

At the AFF Suzuki Cup in 2008, Vinh headed a goal in the final second, beating Thailand 3-2 and bringing Viet Nam its first Cup.

The highlight of his bright career has been winning three Golden Ball statues for best player. He is also the best striker of Viet Nam, with more than 100 goals in his pocket.

T&T crash out of Champions League

Coach Phan Thanh Hung has admitted that FC Seoul were too strong for Ha Noi T&T during the Asian Football Confederation Champions League play-off match yesterday in Seoul.

Former finalists FC Seoul entered the group stage of the league for the third time, after the K League Classic side recorded a thumping 7-0 win.

Yun Il-lok deflected an overhead kick from Brazilian Everton Santos, Jung Jo-gook and Sergio Escudero, setting FC Seoul on their way in the first half of the match at the Seoul World Cup Stadium.

Jung, Lee Seok-hyun and Captain Koh Myong-jin increased the lead in the second half as FC Seoul secured their place in Group H. They will play defending champions Western Sydney Wanderers from Australia, 2013 winners Guangzhou Evergrande from China and Japan’s Kashima Antlers, having followed up their 2013 final appearance with a run to the semi-finals last year.

“FC Seoul are a strong team. I want to say congratulations and also good luck to them for the group stage,” said Hanoi coach Thanh Hung.

“The atmosphere in Seoul was really good, and FC Seoul performed really well.

“The weather was really cold and made it difficult for us to perform well. Also, a lack of experience in the ACL was another difficulty factor.

“From the experience we gained today, we hope to play well when we get another chance to play in this tournament,” Hung added.

Despite their lack of match practice, FC Seoul took the lead in just 14 minutes as the ball broke for Yun from a crowd on the edge of the penalty area. With Hanoi unable to ward off the danger, the midfielder produced a composed finish past goalkeeper Nguyen Van Cong.

FC Seoul continued to dominate and doubled their lead six minutes later, as Ha Noi were again unable to clear the ball out of their penalty area. Everton Santos’ acrobatic overhead kick deflected off the shoulder of centre-back Daneil Cyrus and looped over Van Cong.

A third goal came 10 minutes later as Kim Chi-woo’s superb angled pass found Jung on the edge of the penalty area. Despite the presence of two Ha Noi defenders, the striker found the bottom corner.

FC Seoul ended the first half with a four-goal cushion, as Ha Noi conceded possession inside their own half. Escudero eventually played a one-two with Yun inside the penalty area, before the striker was on hand to produce a superb first-time side-footed finish from close range.

FC Seoul continued where they had left off in the second half. Jung curled home a first-time effort from outside the penalty area, less than a minute after the game resumed, having exchanged passes with Lee.

For their seventh goal, FC Seoul had to wait till the last 20 minutes for Lee to turn home following good work from Jung, before captain Koh fired high into the roof of the net from close range, two minutes after Hanoi goalkeeper Van Cong dropped a high ball on the edge of his six-yard area.

“We prepared really hard at the winter camp and it paid off,” FC Seoul coach Choi Yong-soo was quoted as saying on the-afc.com.

“The important thing is that we have to forget about the match today and need to prepare for the next game,” said Choi, who had also seen his side draw the first leg of the 2013 AFC Champions League final 2-2 at home.

“We have an away match against Guangzhou. I know that they are a really strong team. However, in football, we don’t know anything till the final whistle.”

The Vietnamese Tet of foreign football players

They are football players and football coaches who married Vietnamese women and live in Vietnam.

20150212111328-1

The most famous bridegroom among foreign football players and coaches in Vietnam may be the coach of Hoang Anh Gia Lai FC, Graechen Guillaume of France.

After a good year with his U19 team, the French coach is becoming acquainted with the new job coaching V-League – Vietnam’s top football league.

Guillaume did not have a good start at V-League so the Lunar New Year is an interval to rest and relieve stress before improving his team.

The Vietnamese Tet is not strange to the French coach because he has been in Vietnam for seven to eight years.

Photo: The New Year holiday is an opportunity for coach Graechen Guillaume to be with his family.

Tet is also an opportunity for the Frenchman to reunite with his family, his wife and two children, in the suburbs of Pleiku City.

Another famous foreign bridegroom is Huynh Kesley Alves. This Brazilian-born striker has celebrated many lunar New Year holidays in Vietnam.

Kesley enjoys the practices of Vietnamese people during Tet, such as displaying peach and apricot trees in the house, welcoming guests and giving lucky money to children.

Striker Diabate of Dong Tam Long An is one of the “newest” bridegrooms of Vietnam. Last year he married a woman from the Mekong Delta and this will be his first Tet in Vietnam as a married man.

There are other foreign husband footballers, such as Hoang Vissai, Dinh Hoang Max of Quang Ninh Coal FC and Van Bakel of Thanh Hoa FC.

For them, Tet with their families is a time to enjoy spring, and be immersed in the traditions and customs of Vietnam.
