Handball law gives Fifa consistency and fans something to rail against

Change is meant to remove ambiguity so referees need not decide whether a player touched the ball deliberately.

In these troubled times, scraps of normality glint like a jewel in the dirt. Three cheers, then, for a weekend when the football discourse was dominated not by the imminent collapse of the league pyramid or the unsuccessful containment of a global pandemic but, sweet bliss, by people becoming furious about refereeing.

Like wandering aimlessly through a crowd, or paying for something with coins, the heated response to this season’s new interpretation of the handball rule has the feel of a charming throwback. To hear Roy Hodgson fuming against the law – “I don’t want to profit from it or lose from it” – or to see Steve Bruce decry it as “a nonsense, a nonsense of a rule” felt like slumping back into a battered pub sofa, only without having to look over your shoulder to check how many people are sitting at the next table. Being incensed about something that really doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things is a luxury and in current times can even feel cathartic. Thank you Fifa, we owe you one.

It is the game’s governing body which has inspired all this trouble. It took control over the application of VAR this summer, in order to stop rogue competitions such as the Premier League from interpreting the rules differently from everyone else (see also: referee’s monitors, keepers coming off their line for a penalty). This in turn provoked a revision by the law-makers, the International Football Association Board, with the aim of increasing clarity in order to stop rogue competitions such as, er, the Premier League, offering too much leeway to its match officials.

So now we have a handball rule that no longer necessitates a ref must look into the heart of a player and decide whether they touched the ball deliberately or not. Furthermore, the definition of what constitutes a hand in handball has also been clarified (it goes up to the bottom of the armpit). Instead, the main thing the match official must decide is whether a defender, by using a hand, has made their body “unnaturally bigger”.

That may sound like a phrase ripe for legalistic wrangling but given Fifa’s lust for consistency, its application to this point has been straightforward. Basically, move your arm away from your body in the area and if the ball hits you, from any distance, even off a deflection from another player, you are going to give away a penalty.

That’s what we saw on Saturday when Joel Ward deflected a header from Lucas Digne. It’s what we saw on Sunday when Andy Carroll slammed a header into Eric Dier’s arm. Both players’ arms were up and that Digne was two yards away from Ward when he headed the ball or that it was the back of Dier’s arm that connected with Carroll’s effort was neither here nor there.

This goes against what fans have become used to. We are accustomed to debating whether a player deliberately set out to handle a ball (and thus judge their character). We are expert in discussing whether a distance was too short to react (and thus showing our knowledge of human physiology). A rule whereby all that matters is a defender’s silhouette takes out an awful lot of ambiguity and that’s the point.

Whether it makes for a better game, however, is arguable. Those who might previously have spent their energies wondering whether Dier could have turned his back in order to mask subterfuge are wondering whether Carroll planted his header on the arm deliberately. We are, is the fear, on the verge of an era where the beautiful game is trampled under a rush to boot balls at people’s body parts.

The good news is it would appear unlikely the current state of affairs will last. While Fifa has made clear its expectation for consistency there is, also, room for nuance. That means if the Professional Game Match Officials Board in England decided upon a looser definition of what “unnaturally bigger” meant it could likely apply it. It could perhaps even make some allowances for the distance between players.

Last year, when the Premier League was doing its own thing, there were 20 penalties in the whole season for handball. In Serie A, where the letter of the law was more strictly followed, there were 57. English football will look more like Italian football this year unless something changes, but – within that narrow space for wriggle room – it is likely that it will.

So enjoy the moment and all the nostalgia that comes from watching neck veins throb unnecessarily. But also remember one other thing: this is what it looks like when that quality perennially demanded of referees, consistency, comes into practice.

Man Utd bid ‘does not seduce’ Porto in ‘test of nerves’

Porto will hold out to get their asking price for Alex Telles after Man Utd lodged a €15m bid for the left-back, according to reports in Portugal.

The left-back scored an incredible 11 goals in 31 appearances for Porto in the Portuguese top flight last campaign.

The Brazilian left-back scored an incredible 11 goals in 31 appearances for Porto in the Portuguese top flight last campaign, while he also contributed eight assists.

The 27-year-old started this season with a bang too, bagging two goals and an assist as Porto beat Braga 3-1 in their first match last weekend and was part of the team that won 5-0 at Boavista on Saturday.

Telles has been consistently linked with the Red Devils in recent weeks, with A Bola claiming ‘concrete progress’ over a deal just a week ago, while they ruled out the possibility of Diogo Dalot joining Porto as part of the deal.

And there’s an update in the Portuguese newspapers on Monday, with A Bola (via Sport Witness) now claiming that Man Utd have been ‘challenged’ to increase their bid for Telles.

Their current €15m offer ‘does not seduce’ Porto as they put on their ‘poker face’ looking for a fee closer to €20m.

The newspaper calls it a ‘test of nerves’ for all parties with a ‘patience game’ under way with fellow Portuguese publication Record saying that there is very little to report on Telles’ current situation at Porto.

Arsenal have had ‘timid’ Aouar offer rejected by Lyon, president Aulas confirms

The 22-year-old French star has been linked with the Gunners all summer, but the Ligue 1 club chief says a deal will be done by Friday or not at all.

Lyon have received a bid from Arsenal for Houssem Aouar, club president Jean-Michel Aulas has confirmed – but it wasn’t an offer worth thinking about.

The Gunners appear to be stepping up their pursuit of the 22-year-old France star as the transfer window enters its final week.

Aulas said Lyon want more than €40 million (£36m/$47m) for Aouar, after stating earlier on Monday that clubs have until Friday to complete deals for their players – or they won’t be allowed to leave.

French outlet l’Equipe have reported Lyon are closing in on deals to sign AC Milan midfielder Lucas Paqueta and Penarol winger Facundo Pellistri, amid suggestions the pair could be being brought in as direct replacements for Aouar and Memphis Depay, who is linked with Barcelona.

Aulas was asked on Canal+ whether Arsenal had made a bid for Aouar, and he replied: “There was a timid offer. We felt like they didn’t consider the fact that this is a player in the French national team. So, it was an offer that did not even make us consider making a sale.”

The interviewer followed up, asking how much Aulas wanted for Aouar – perhaps €40m or €50m.

“It is certainly more than the first number that you mentioned,” he said.

Arsenal’s desire for new blood in their team may have been strengthened by their 3-1 defeat to Liverpool on Monday night.

Mikel Arteta admitted after the game that the Premier League champions are, at present, simply a superior side – and they play at Anfield again in the Carabao Cup on Thursday.

Despite the desire for new signings, Arsenal will be keen to ensure they keep their spending in check.

Owner Stan Kroenke, whose wealth is estimated at £6.3 billion ($8.3bn), confirmed at the beginning of August that 55 members of staff were to be made redundant due to the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic, but that investment in the team would continue.

If they are to sign Aouar, they will apparently need to speed things up.

“We will tell the players that whatever will not be settled in terms of departures before Friday, there will be no more departures,” Aulas told Telefoot on Monday.

“So for us the [closing] date of the transfer window will be Friday.”

‘Was he speaking about another game?!’ – Klopp blasts Keane for ‘sloppy’ comment after Liverpool beat Arsenal

The Reds boss didn’t like what he heard from the pundit after what he saw as an exceptional performance from his side at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp showed himself to be braver than most after Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Arsenal on Monday, calling out Roy Keane after taking issue with one of the pundit’s comments.

Former Manchester United midfielder Keane suggested Klopp might have been unhappy with one or two defensive moments from his team.

A bad mistake from Andy Robertson allowed Alexandre Lacazette to open the scoring against the run of play but Liverpool hit back through Sadio Mane, Robertson and new boy Diogo Jota.

“They’re like a machine,” Keane said on Sky Sports. “They’ve got great quality going forward. They’re obviously one of the fittest teams around. They suffocate teams. I know Arsenal were encouraging them by playing out from the back but they have loads of goals in them.

“They were sloppy on one or two occasions at the back but job done and a good start to the season for them.”

That last comment, however, provoked a spiky response from Klopp.

“Did I hear it right, that Mr Keane said it was a sloppy performance tonight?” he asked. “I could hear you already, did he say that?”

Keane replied: “I think they gave up one or two opportunities which they will be disappointed with.”

Klopp wasn’t satisfied with this response.

“I just wanted to hear it,” he said. “I’m not sure I heard it right, maybe he was speaking about another game… it cannot be this game, sorry!

“That is an incredible description of this game, that was absolutely exceptional. Nothing was sloppy, absolutely nothing.

“From the first second, we were dominant against a team in form, 100 per cent in form. You have to be careful like hell and not get counter-attacked. I think 60 or 70 per cent of all the balls in behind were offside. You have to wait a little longer for the flag now so that’s why it feels not great, but they were offside.

“Alisson had to make one save, they had two balls in behind, you cannot avoid that. You need a goalie in these situations. Apart from that, the football we played was absolutely exceptional tonight.

“About this game tonight, there is nothing bad to say. It was the opposite of sloppy.”

Keane did get in one final barb after Klopp had left, remarking: “Very sensitive, Jesus. Imagine if he’d lost!”

Hoffenheim put four past Bayern Munich to end long unbeaten run

Bayern Munich slumped to a shock 4-1 loss at Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga on Sunday, ending a 32-match unbeaten run stretching back to last year.

Andrej Kramaric scored twice as Bayern lost for the first time in 21 Bundesliga games, and suffered a first defeat in all competitions since December 2019.

Ermin Bicakcic put the hosts ahead in the 16th minute, nodding in a corner at the near post. Eight minutes later, a mistake by Bayern defender Benjamin Pavard allowed Munas Dabbur to break free and beat keeper Manuel Neuer with a fine finish.

Joshua Kimmich’s superbly curled shot from the edge of the area cut the deficit in the 36th minute, before Neuer tipped a Kramaric effort on to the post. Bayern striker Joshua Zirkzee almost bagged an equaliser in the 56th minute but his shot hit the bar.

Bayern, who beat Sevilla in midweek to win the Uefa Super Cup, showed signs of fatigue as the hosts kept pressing and Kramaric sealed victory in the 77th minute. The Croatian and former Leicester forward controlled a cross and turned beautifully before beating Neuer.

Kramaric scored a stoppage-time penalty to seal an impressive win for Hoffenheim’s new coach Sebastian Hoeness, a Bayern youth coach until last season and nephew of longtime club boss Uli Hoeness.

Wagner sacked by Schalke amid winless run

Schalke have sacked David Wagner as head coach following their poor start to the 2020-21 campaign, the Bundesliga club said in a statement on Sunday.

Wagner’s side were thrashed 8-0 by the champions, Bayern Munich, in their season opener last weekend and endured a 3-1 defeat by Werder Bremen on Saturday. “FC Schalke 04 have relieved David Wagner of his duties with immediate effect,” Schalke said in a tweet.

Schalke are now without a win in 18 league games. The former Huddersfield manager joined Schalke in 2019 and in the first half of last season lived up to fans’ expectations with the club in Champions League contention.

However, they added only 10 more points from their next 17 matches to end up 12th, eight points above the relegation play-off spot. Schalke said they would appoint Wagner’s successor in the coming days.

Andreas Pereira: Lazio interested in Manchester United midfielder

Lazio are interested in signing Manchester United midfielder Andreas Pereira, according to Sky in Italy.

Pereira came through the youth ranks at Manchester United

The Serie A side’s sporting director Igli Tare is weighing up a move for the 24-year-old and will look to open talks with United in the final week of the transfer window.

Pereira has been left out of the matchday squad for United’s first two Premier League games of the season against Brighton and Crystal Palace as well as for their Carabao Cup tie at Luton in midweek.

The midfielder’s chances of first-team minutes under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer look increasingly slim following the arrival of Donny van de Beek in a £39m deal from Ajax.

Lazio are looking for reinforcements in midfield after missing out on David Silva, who decided to join La Liga side Real Sociedad following his exit from Manchester City.

The United academy product, who had loan spells in Spain with Granada and Valencia, made 40 appearances last season, scoring two goals and recording four assists.

Meanwhile, Dan James has told Solksjaer he wants to stay at Old Trafford and fight for his place, despite an offer from Leeds United to take him on loan.

Dias set for £62m City switch; Otamendi heading to Benfica

Benfica have reached agreement with Manchester City for the sale of Portugal defender Ruben Dias.

Benfica have reached agreement with Manchester City for the sale of Portugal defender Ruben Dias and signing of Nicolas Otamendi.

The Portuguese club have announced Dias will join City for a fee of 68million euros (£62million) with Argentinian centre-back Otamendi moving in the opposite direction for £15million (£13.6million).

Both deals are subject to the agreement of personal terms at their prospective clubs.

A communication from Benfica announced the club had reached two agreements with the Citizens.

It read: “In the first statement, it said (Benfica) had reached an agreement with Manchester City for the sale of all the rights of central defender Rúben Dias for the amount of 68million euros, plus an additional amount of 3.6million euros, depending the achievement of goals related to the English club’s sports performance.

“The said agreement is dependent on the signing of the player’s sporting employment contract with Manchester City.

“In the second statement, (Benfica) said it had reached an agreement with Manchester City to acquire the full rights of central defender Nicolás Otamendi for the amount of 15million euros.

“This agreement is dependent on the signing of a sports employment contract with the player and medical examinations.”

Dias, 23, will become City’s second defensive signing of the summer after bringing in Nathan Ake from Bournemouth in a deal worth an initial £40million in August.

The club hope the two arrivals will address the perceived major weakness in manager Pep Guardiola’s squad last season.

City had long been linked with Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly but moved their attention elsewhere due to the Italian club’s asking price.

Otamendi, 32, is set to move on after a five-year spell at City in which he has won seven major honours, including two Premier League titles.

Ronaldo sees a ‘bright future’ for Juventus after salvaging draw at Roma

The Portuguese star scored twice to seal a point for the Old Lady and he feels there will be good things to come for the team.

Cristiano Ronaldo has predicted a “bright future” for Juventus after his double salvaged a 2-2 draw for the Serie A champions against Roma on Sunday.

The Bianconeri were far from their best at Stadio Olimpico and went in down 2-1 at the break after Jordan Veretout netted a brace either side of a Ronaldo spot-kick.

Juve’s chances of clawing their way back into the game suffered a blow when Adrien Rabiot was dismissed for a second bookable offence after 62 minutes, but Ronaldo secured a point with a towering header seven minutes later.

Despite Roma dominating for long periods, Ronaldo was pleased to leave the capital with a point and believes the Bianconceri are in for another successful season.

“I think it is a point earned,” he told Sky Sport Italia. “It had become a complicated situation but we got back into it, even after the red card, so by the end of the campaign this could prove to be an important point.

“We’re at the start of the season, there’s a new coach, new ideas, but I see the team working well. We’re enthusiastic and I see a bright future for us.

“What we’re seeing is that the team is happy to work with a smile.”

New signing Alvaro Morata – who was at Juve between 2014-16 – made his second debut for the Old Lady after securing a loan deal from Atletico Madrid.

Starting alongside Ronaldo in attack, Morata failed to have a strong impact on the match and was substituted after 58 minutes with Douglas Costa coming on in his place.

Speaking prior to the Roma match, the 27-year-old spoke of his happiness to be back in Turin and hoped he could help the club win the Champions League.

“Juve took a punt on me when I was younger and coming back was a dream of mine,” Morata told reporters at his presentation.

“Leaving Juventus was not up to me. I was happy in Madrid, but now it’s important for me to be here and I have kept in touch with everyone over the years.

“It was a great memory and now we have new challenges to face together.

“The Champions League is very important to Juventus. If we were to win it this year, I would be the happiest man in the world. We want to win it.”

Simeone salutes Suarez after dream Atletico Madrid debut

The former Barcelona star has hit the ground running with his new club and his manager was left impressed with what he saw.

Diego Simeone was more impressed by Luis Suarez’s assist and movement off the ball than his two goals in Atletico Madrid‘s 6-1 La Liga rout of Granada.

Suarez was brought on in the 70th minute and marked his Atleti debut in style by netting an impressive double and setting up fellow substitute Marcos Llorente on Sunday.

The Uruguay international, who only joined in a €6 million deal from Barcelona on Friday, also won a penalty that was overturned by VAR in a one-sided La Liga contest.

Suarez scored with two types of finishes – one a brilliant header and the other a cute first-time finish on the rebound – but head coach Simeone was most pleased by the way his new forward teed up Llorente with only his second touch of the ball.

“His two goals didn’t stand out for me, but his assists, his runs and his movement did,” Simeone said after the match.

“The changes gave us a bit extra with the strength of Marcos, the quality of Vitolo, the clarity of Thomas [Partey] and Suarez knows what he has to do: play for the team.”

Diego Costa, Angel Correa and Joao Felix were also on target for Atletico at the Wanda Metropolitano as they recorded their biggest win in an opening league game under Simeone.

Atleti have been tipped to rival Real Madrid and Barca for the title this term and Simeone is hopeful that increased competition for a starting spot can get the most out of his players.

“It will depend on our work, our squad depth and the players’ security. The team was liberated,” he said.

“The arrival of an important player improves the team, but the team was already working very well. Now we’ll continue taking it game by game, like always.

“Suarez’s arrival generates a very good internal competition and if the 23 players accept the minutes they’re going to get, I’m sure we’ll compete well

“From my perspective, when it comes to building a squad, I look for guys who know how to perform and who accept when they play and when they don’t.

“That’s how great teams are formed. That’s what gives you the possibility of having more options. That’s what we’re looking for season by season.”

After a fairly long postponement due to Covid-19 pandemic, Vietnam Futsal League 2020 will be back from October 1st with 9 remaining matches of the second leg.

Kicking-off from June 14th, the second stage of Vietnam Futsal League 2020 has happened excitingly with drastic competitions. The present champions Thái Sơn Nam continue to prove their strength with 9 unbeaten games which help them become the champions of the first leg.

The teams of coach Phạm Minh Giang have 7 wins and 2 draws, score 43 goals and earned 23 points. They are 4 points clear from the second-ranked Sahako. Danang (17 points), Sanna Khánh Hòa (16 points), Sanatech Khánh Hòa (15 points) in turn stand at the next positions.
