The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has just revealed a good news to Vietnamese football clubs as it announces the number of participating teams of the AFC Champions League 2021.
The number of Southeast Asian clubs presenting in the AFC Champions League and AFC Cup 2021
Recently, AFC has announced the number of Asian football clubs who present in the qualification and group stages of the AFC Champions League as well as AFC Cup 2021. Accordingly, Vietnam football will have one representative in the Champions League’s group stage and 2 representatives in the AFC Cup group stage.
This is a very happy information for football clubs in V-League because over the previous years, since 2016, the champions of V-League have had to start their journey in the AFC Champions League from the 2nd qualification round. Hanoi FC in the 2019 season had to play one game in the qualification round, one play-off game, and were not able to get the ticket to the group stage. And recently, at the beginning of 2020 season, HCMC FC were stopped in the 2nd qualification round (1-2 defeat over Buriram United).
The extension of AFC will make V-League 2020 more interesting as the champions will automatically win the AFC Champions League ticket. At present, Hanoi FC, HCMC FC are showing their determination. The capital football club want to maintain their empire, while the Ho Chi Minh City FC with strong investments are expecting high achievements in the continental playground.
Together with Vietnam, Thailand either benefits with 2 representatives in the AFC Champions League group stage and 2 play-off tickets. Meanwhile, the Philippines also have one group stage spot and one play-off spot. Malaysia and Indonesia have one group stage spot for each.
