Vietnam’s Phi Son vies for the ball with a Timor-Leste player in a Group B match at the 28th South East Asian Games in Singapore on June 7, 2015
Like what Coach Toshiya Miura told the media ahead of the match, Vietnam followed attacking strategy from the beginning, despite the fact that Timor-Leste had sharp counterattacks.
Vietnam took the lead in the 12th minute with a header from Phi Son.
The second goal for Vietnam also came from a header by Mac Hong Quan in the 49th minute as he got a good pass from captain Que Ngoc Hai.
It was Hai who scored the third goal for Vietnam in a right wing attack when his passing attempt from a narrow angle veered the ball toward the net of goalkeeper Ramos Maxanches.
In the 58th minute, Thanh Binh was sent to the field to replace Mac Hong Quan and just three minutes later, he had a dangerous shot on target. And Huy Toan was at the right place when the ball bounced out from goalkeeper Maxanches.
Vietnam will play Thailand on June 10 to determine the leading position of Group B. Both teams have booked their tickets to the semifinals.
In Group A, Myanmar is leading with high possibilities to advance to the next round, while the other slot can be secured by Indonesia, Singapore or Cambodia.

Barca cap great season with fifth European Cup win

Barcelona were crowned kings of Europe for the fifth time after beating Juventus 3-1 in a pulsating Champions League final at the Olympic Stadium on Saturday, capping their magnificent season with a title treble.

The Spaniards lived up to their tag as favourites and added the European Cup to their La Liga and King’s Cup triumphs as coach Luis Enrique celebrated his first season in memorable fashion.
Goals from Croatian Ivan Rakitic in the fourth minute, Uruguayan Luis Suarez in the 68th and Brazilian Neymar with the last kick of the game sealed Barca’s second treble, matching their 2009 feat.
“It’s incredible, a dream, something unique,” Suarez told reporters. “To win these competitions you have to suffer, if not it’s not worth it, and today we had to suffer to win the match.”
Barca’s South American trio of Suarez, Neymar and Lionel Messi, known collectively as ‘MSN’, showed spectacular form all season and Saturday’s goals took their tally to an amazing 122 in all competitions as the game proved the perfect antidote for the corruption scandal engulfing soccer’s governing body FIFA.
Juve, however, became the first team in the history of the competition to get beaten in six finals and the Italian giants have now lost their last four.
“I would like to thank the team for the wonderful season they have had,” said Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri who landed the domestic double in his first season in charge.
“We played a great game tonight…unfortunately when you play against great players you think you have things under control but then they get you.”
Sublime goal
Barca shrugged off a nervous start by scoring a sublime fourth-minute goal.
All 10 outfield players touched the ball in a 16-pass move that ended when Neymar fed Andres Iniesta and he picked out Rakitic to slot the fourth fastest goal in a European Cup final.
Juve keeper Gianluigi Buffon, who won the World Cup with Italy at the Olympic Stadium in 2006 but is still waiting to capture his first European Cup crown, denied Barca a second goal in the 13th minute with a superb one-handed save keeping out a Dani Alves shot.
Alvaro Morata twice went close for the Italians but Barca’s pressure in the first half was relentless and Suarez twice almost netted.
The 37-year-old Buffon again came to the rescue three minutes after the restart and then Juve struck against the run of play with former Real Madrid striker Morata tapping the ball in after keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen had saved from Carlos Tevez.
The Italians looked to be taking control of the game but their joy was short-lived. Argentine Messi took matters into his own hands, charging past three defenders and unleashing a low drive that Buffon could only parry to Suarez.
It was the most crucial goal of the 28-year-old Uruguayan’s career and it came a year after he was branded a villain for biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini, who missed Saturday’s final through injury, at the World Cup in Brazil.
Neymar had a goal disallowed after his header bounced off his own hand to deceive the diving Buffon, much to the forward’s frustration.
Juve, who had an average age of 30 and were the second oldest team to play in a Champions League final, fought bravely but ran out of steam.
Neymar netted deep into stoppage time to provide a fitting farewell for midfielder Xavi who is leaving Barca after collecting 25 trophies in more than two decades with the club he joined at the age of 11.
Along with team mates Iniesta, Messi and Gerard Pique, Xavi also equalled former Netherlands midfielder Clarence Seedorf’s record of four Champions League triumphs.

Female soccer icon Marta says woman could succeed FIFA’s Blatter

As the list of names being suggested as possible replacements for FIFA President Sepp Blatter grows, one theme is evident. All the prospective candidates are men.

Record five-time FIFA Female Player of the Year Marta

Record five-time FIFA Female Player of the Year Marta

According to record five-time FIFA Female Player of the Year Marta, there’s no reason why a woman shouldn’t take the post for the first time since soccer’s governing body was established in 1904.
“Independent to a man or woman it’s about capacity,” Marta said in a phone interview Wednesday from Sao Paulo’s international airport, where she was en route to Canada for this month’s Women’s World Cup. “You need to have the knowledge of what needs to be done to improve the sport, so I have a preference for capability independent of whether it’s a man or woman.”
Bookmakers have made European soccer head Michel Platini and Blatter’s election opponent Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan favorites. Others to have declared interest include FIFA’s Honorary Vice President Chung Mong-joon of Korea and Brazil’s 1986 World Cup playmaker Zico.
Marta was selected as FIFA World Player of the Year every year from 2006-10. The Brazilian was voted the best player at the 2007 World Cup in China and scored the most goals at the tournament, when Brazil lost 2-0 to Germany in the final.
The Women’s World Cup kicks off Saturday in Edmonton with the sport reeling from the arrests last week of key FIFA executives in a Swiss hotel as part of a U.S. investigation into more than two decades of alleged corruption. On Tuesday, Blatter said he will step down, four days after being re-elected to a fifth term as president.
Causing offense
Blatter recently described himself as the “godfather” of the women’s game. In 2013 at FIFA’s congress in Mauritius, Blatter caused offense when announcing the addition of the first woman to the governing body’s executive committee, Burundi’s Lydia Nsekera, the highest-ranking woman in the sport.
“Any ladies in this room?” he said. “Say something ladies. You are always speaking at home. Now you can speak here.”
Marta said her success didn’t earn her much contact with the FIFA president.
“People from women’s football don’t have much access to people in this environment,” she said. “We see them in the competitions from time to time.”
U.S. indictments
The U.S. Department of Justice last week indicted 14 FIFA officials and sports-marketing executives with charges including accepting more than $150 million in bribes and kickbacks over more than two decades.
Marta said she was saddened by the breach of trust shown by officials who enriched themselves at the expense of the game.
“We need to find responsible people to correct the errors so football can continue to be a passion for people all around the world,” she said.
Marta criticized a lack of funding for the women’s game in Brazil, which has won more men’s World Cups than any other nation. She has spent a significant portion of her career overseas and currently plays in Sweden.
“They give 90 percent of the money for men football’s, leaving very little for women,” she said. “They must show more love for women’s football.”

Vietnam complete hat-trick in SEA Games

Viet Nam completed their hattrick of wins by beating Laos 1-0 in the third round match of Group B at the Southeast Asian Games in Bishan Stadium yesterday, June 4.

20150605104012-football

We did it: Viet Nam defender Nguyen Thanh Hien scores the only goal in a match against Laos yesterday in Singapore.

Defender Nguyen Thanh Hien scored the only goal at the 65th minute, after the Vietnamese side, one of the title favourites this year, wasted many chances.

National idol Nguyen Cong Phuong made a solo to break into the penalty area of Laos.

His shoot was blocked out and the ball came to Hien who was put in the field unwillingly at the 23rd minute to replace Nguyen Huu Dung who suffered an injury.

Hien managed the ball and made a straight shoot to the right corner of goalkeeper Keodouang-deth Vathana who stretched all of his size but failed to save the net.

After three rounds of matches, Viet Nam top Group B with nine points, followed by Thailand, who also had their third win in an earlier match yesterday.

Thai captain Sarach Yooyen showed how it’s done when he fired the only goal of the game to realistically edge Malaysia out of the SEA Games.

With the Thai strikers firing blanks, it was up to Sarach to show how it’s done when he unleashed a screamer beyond the reach of Malaysian keeper Mohd Farhan Abu Bakar 10 minutes to the end.

“We were actually quite surprised with the goal,” Thai coach Choketawee Promrut was quoted as saying on aseanfootball.org. “But the important thing is the three points today.”

Both teams were struggling under the extreme afternoon heat as they were passing the ball around, probing for spaces to push forward. Thailand were the early aggressors as the Malaysians seemed content to defend, with coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee preferring to play without a striker.

As Matthew Davies was tasked with marking out Thai striker Chananan Pombupha, chances were too few in the opening half, although the Malaysians relied on some quick counters through Gary Steven Robbat.

The best chance came late in the 28th minute, but despite being unmarked, Thitiphan Puang-jan just couldn’t find his mark – twice.

The wily Chanathip Songkrasin finally came alive in the second half as he weaved in and through the Malaysian defence at will, but still to no avail as the strike force just couldn’t seem to find the scoring touch past the athleticism of keeper Mohd Farhan.

Malaysia had a great chance in the 59th minute to score, but Syahrul Azwari Ibrahim’s curling shot was parried by Thai custodian Chanin Sae-Ear.

Still, Thailand pushed forward, from the left and the right, as the Malaysian defence scrambled to prevent a breach.

Just when Thailand seemed certain they could only salvage a point, came the rifling shot from Sarach to give Thailand and their fans the relief they thoroughly deserved.

“We struggled against Viet Nam, and today, we also struggled against Thailand,” quipped Kim Swee.

“Realistically, it is all down to Thailand, Viet Nam, and Malaysia as to who will make it to the semi-finals. And since we have lost to these two teams, the answer is obvious.”

Defending champions Thailand will face Brunei tomorrow, while Viet Nam will play East Timor on Sunday and Malaysia will meet Brunei one day later.

In Group A action yesterday, Myanmar defeated host Singapore 2-1.

The only goal of the game was scored in the 65th minute by defender Nguyen Thanh Hien.

Vietnamese striker Cong Phuong failed to dribble the ball past several rivals and the loose ball came to Hien on the left wing, who blasted a long shot from a distance of around 20 meters to score the opening goal.

The Vietnamese side had better ball possession and controlled the rhythm of the match but they had trouble getting past the thick defensive wall of Laos.

This is the third win for Vietnam in Group B after they crushed Brunei 6-0 on May 29 and Malaysia 5-1 on June 2.

Vietnam will next take on Timor Leste on June 7 and Thailand on June 10.

Group B includes Timor-Leste, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand, Brunei, and Vietnam. The other regional teams including hosts Singapore, Indonesia, Myanmar, Cambodia, and the Philippines are in Group A.

The 28th Southeast Asian Games will open in Singapore on Friday, June 5, and close on June 16.
