Goal-line technology makes debut in German Cup final
Goal-line technology will make it’s debut in Germany for the national Cup final in Berlin on May 30, the German Football Association (DFB) announced on Monday.
BERLIN: Goal-line technology will make it’s debut in Germany for the national Cup final in Berlin on May 30, the German Football Association (DFB) announced on Monday (May 11).
Borussia Dortmund’s clash with VfL Wolfsburg at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium will be the first time the technology has been used in the land of the world champions.
“Therefore this will be an historic game and the first time in a competitive match where the technology has been used here,” said DFB general secretary Helmut Sandrock.
The top clubs in Germany’s first two divisions voted last December in favour of bringing it in in time for next season.
Last year’s Cup final was won 2-0 by Bayern Munich in extra time against Dortmund, but only after officials failed to spot that a header from Borussia defender Mats Hummels had crossed the line during the 90 minutes.
“The technology can only improve things,” said Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke. “That was a clear goal – if it had counted, we would have won the final.”

The latest case is of key midfielder Ngo Hoang Thinh who suffered an injury and left the field on a stretcher during a friendly match against South Korea’s U23 on Saturday.
After his X-ray examination, doctors said Thinh has two broken ribs and will need at least two months rest.
It means that the Song Lam Nghe An player will miss his SEA Games for the second time in a row.
Two years ago Thinh, 23, had failed to make it to the squad because of a knee ligament injury.
In a Facebook post, Thinh said sorry to everyone who put trust in him; he will not have any SEA Games in the near future.
Striker Phan Van Long of SHB Da Nang who has long suffered a groin injury will also not reach his peak at the Games.

Bayern Munich 3-2 Barcelona (agg 3-5): Messi & Co reach final despite defeat
Bayern Munich failed to summon the miracle they required to prevent Barcelona easing into the UEFA Champions League final at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday night
Thomas Muller’s 74th minute strike at least gave Pep Guardiola’s men the satisfaction of victory on the night but Bayern’s 3-2 win could not stop the visitors coasting to Berlin with a 5-3 aggregate success.
Bayern dared to dream when Mehdi Benatia powered home a seventh minute header but a quick double from Brazilian Neymar effectively sunk their hopes of staging an astonishing comeback.
Benatia’s opener which caught out Barcelona keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen was just what the home fans dreamed of and Bastian Schweinsteiger had them hoping for more when he fired over the bar.
But Bayern paid for defensive errors in the 15th minute when Lionel Messi brilliantly cut open the German rearguard to feed Luis Suarez, who unselfishly crossed for Neymar to prod home the equaliser on the night.
Muller missed an excellent chance to put Bayern back in front when Ter Stegen flapped away his goal-bound effort, then the keeper proved equal to a poor effort from Lewandowski as Bayern dominated.
But Bayern’s inevitable desire to attack cost them dear again in the 28th minute when Suarez crossed from the right and found Neymar in plenty of space to knock home the visitors’ second.
Ter Stegen was called on again in the 28th minute to paw a Lewandowski effort off the line at the second attempt as Barcelona looked increasingly happy to sit back and conjure fleeting counter-attacks.
Philipp Lahm almost cued up a fine chance for Schweinsteiger in the 49th minute and 10 minutes later Lewandowski turned on the edge of the box and drilled a superb low shot past Ter Stegen to draw level on the night.
Muller shot just wide as Bayern began to dominate, and they got the third goal their performance deserved in the 74th minute when Muller steered home after Schweinsteiger played a neat lay-off with his back to goal.
Lewandowski saw an effort deflected wide as Bayern looked to go out in style, but with time ticking by and the home side’s slim hopes long extinguished, the last say was almost left for Barcelona.
Neymar was sent into space in the left side of the box and instead of going for his hat-trick he unselfishly tried to find Messi, only for his attempted pass to evade the Argentinian and roll harmlessly across the face of an empty goal.

U23s held to goalless draw against South Korea
Viet Nam U23 were held to a scoreless draw by the South Korean U23 team in a friendly played on Saturday at the Ha Noi-based My Dinh National Stadium.
Viet Nam’s coach, Toshiya Miura, said after the match that he was very glad to play with one of Asian’s strongest teams, who played very aggressively in the match with Viet Nam. The coach said the match helped Viet Nam sharpen their skills prior to the 28th Southeast Asian Games in Singapore in June.
The 49-year-old coach said this was a friendly match, so he did not much care about the results. However, he was satisfied with his player’s performance.
Meanwhile, manager of South Korea, Shin Tae-yong, said though his team played in hot weather, the players tried their best. The two teams had very young players, but they played very well. In his opinion, Viet Nam’s playing had improved. He had hoped the match would be a chance to test his formation, however, he was not pleased with his players’ performance.
With the support of fans at the home turf, Viet Nam created several situations in which they might score goals, but they failed.
Striker Nguyen Cong Phuong, who joined the team at the end of the first half, could not help Viet Nam open the score.
Two Vietnamese players, Phi Son and Hoang Thinh, were injured during this match and had to leave the field.
Miura said he would select his players for Singapore based upon their performances in this match. He has called up 30 players, though only 21 will travel to the Games.
Also, the Vietnamese U23 team yesterday had a second friendly with the national team in My Dinh Stadium but they lost to the senior team 3-0. The U23 team will also play several matches with local teams before leaving for Singapore on May 19.
Viet Nam will play Brunei in the opener in Group B on May 29.
