Team player: Vo Huy Toan has been named for Toshiya Miura squad for the 28th Southeast Asian Games.

Deputy Head of the Viet Nam Sports Administration Tran Duc Phan said in Ha Noi yesterday, April 9.
Phan said the target had been set following talks with administration, the Viet Nam Football Federation and coach Toshiya Miura.
According to Phan, the target was within reach of the team and it did not put any pressure on the players.
In preparation for the games, Miura has called up 35 players for the team. Most of them, including Nguyen Cong Phuong, Vo Huy Toan, and Que Ngoc Hai, competed at the 2016 AFC U23 Championship qualifying round in Malaysia last month.
Miura also recalled injured players and experienced ones such as Nguyen Huy Hung, Ngo Hoang Thinh, Mac Hong Quan and Tran Phi Son.
The U23 team will convene on May 5 and have three weeks to prepare for the 28th Games.
They will play two international friendly matches against South Korea U23s and a Toyota V.League 1 club. Then the team will face a strong rival from the Southeast Asia region.
Before leaving for Singapore, coach Miura will choose his 20-man squad for the event.
The event will draw 11 regional teams who will be divided into two groups. The draw will be held next Tuesday, and the competition will kick off on May 29.
Viet Nam are considered one of the top teams in the region, but have not won any the Games.
Their best result was winning the ASEAN Football Federation Cup in 2008.

The Vietnamese champions, starting with players who rarely get first-team berths, tied 1-1 against Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors from South Korea in their second leg match of Group E at Binh Duong Stadium.

As the hosts they had strong determination to win, they stated in the pre-match conference.

Binh Duong quickly managed the central area in the first half. However, their attacks did not have much effect on Jeonbuk, who showed their strength in free kicks.

Jeonbuk opened the score at the 30th minute with a corner kick by Brazilian striker Eninho Oliveira Junior, whose kick soared directly into the net. Goalkeeper Nguyen Quoc Thien Esele touched the ball but failed to stop it.

A couple minutes later they nearly made the score 2-0, but Moon Sangyun’s shot went wide.

Captain Nguyen Anh Duc of Binh Duong had his chance after the interval but his attempt in the penalty area hit the crossbar.

Golden-ball award candidate Le Cong Vinh was put on the field to strengthen Binh Duong’s front line.

The national team member, who just recovered from a surgery, did not make his mark during his time on the field.

Meanwhile, Jeonbuk wasted two chances when Kim Dongchan and Eduardo hit the post and the crossbar consecutively.

Abass made it a special moment in the last second of additional time. His long-distance kick went through the Jeonbuk defence, which covered goalie Hong Jung-nam’s eyes and allowed the ball to reach the net.

Abass was voted best player of the match.

The draw did not improve Binh Duong’s ranking, as they are still at the bottom position. Jeonbuk maintained the top spot with eight points.

In the post-match conference, Choi Kang-hee of Jeonbuk said he wanted his team to earn three points from this match to strengthen their first place ranking. The target was not completed.

Choi attributed the loss to the hot weather in Binh Duong Province. His team scored first, but players did not want to attack. They just tried to prevent the result.

His counterpart Nguyen Thanh Son, however, praised his team’s efforts against a much stronger rival who had been playing in the Champions League for years.

In another match of the group, Shandong Luneng of China drew Japanese Kashiwa Reysol 4-4.

Kashiwa Reysol stood second, with the same points with the leaders but less goal difference. Shandong Luneng stand at third with four points.

Next round, Binh Duong will be visiting Shandong Luneng on April 22 while Jeonbuk will entertain Kashiwa Reysol.

South Korea’s Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in the Asian Football Confederation Champions League today, April 8.Becamex Binh Duong coach Nguyen Thanh Son is hoping for a draw in their clash against

B.Bình Dương chiến đấu phục vụ khán giả

After three defeats in Group E, the Vietnamese champions have scored only three goals and conceded 11, and have almost no chance of advancing to the knock-out stages.

“It is our second home match. In our last match against Shangdong Luneng Taishan (of China), we gave it away in the dying minutes. We will try harder tomorrow,” said Son at a press briefing yesterday.

Binh Duong will not have their best players available, with midfielders Nguyen Trong Hoang, Le Tan Tai and Dinh Luat all out due to injuries.

Top striker Le Cong Vinh’s chances of playing are unclear, as he is still recovering from a minor injury.

“It is easy to see the different levels between the two teams. Although we are weaker, we have trained hard and will play on the counter-attack to give our fans an entertaining game,” Son said.

A break in the national V.League 1 has given Binh Duong’s players more time to practise and prepare physically for the game.

In their last V.League 1 game on April 3, Binh Duong defeated former champions Ha Noi T&T 1-0, pushing them to the top of the table.

Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors arrived in Binh Duong Province on Sunday to prepare for the match.

Coach Choi Kang-hee said his side were ready and would bring the points home.

Choi said the weather in Viet Nam was hotter than in their home town, but his players acclimatised with the new conditions quickly.

After three games, Jeonbuk Huyndai Motors lead the group with seven points, followed by Japan’s Kashiwa Reysol and Shangdong Luneng of China who will meet each other in China.

Today, Choi will be hoping for more goals from capital Lee Dong Gook, who scored twice in the previous match.

He will be supported by Brazilian Edu who is leading the K-League’s top scorer with four goals.

Jeonbuk Huyndai Motors are currently second in the K-League Classic, having beaten Pohang Steeler 1-0 on Saturday

Company plans second Arsenal-supported academy in Ho Chi Minh City

A Vietnamese firm is planning to build an Arsenal-supported football (soccer) academy in Ho Chi Minh City following the success of the first such facility established in Vietnam eight years ago.
Nutifood, a nutrition company, has worked with authorities in the city on a proposal to construct the Nutifood HAGL – Arsenal JMG academy after it signed a memorandum of understanding with the HAGL – Arsenal JMG academy on January 31.

The firm’s plan on that academy has been submitted to the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee for consideration.

Hua Ngoc Thuan, deputy chairman of the People’s Committee, said in a meeting with Nutifood representatives on Tuesday that the city welcomes the non-profit football academy project and will give priority to its construction soon.

He requested the Department of Culture and Sports to work closely with Nutifood to survey the site for the construction.

Deputy Chairman Thuan recommended that the academy be built in the Rach Chiec sports complex in District 2.

Tran Thanh Hai, board chairman of Nutifood, said, “We will ask the city to grant us an area from five to ten hectares for building three training grounds, swimming pools, and other facilities.”

The Nutifood HAGL – Arsenal JMG academy plans to recruit its first batch of trainees in June this year and they will be temporarily trained at Phu Tho Sports Hall in District 11.

The HAGL – Arsenal JMG academy was founded in 2007 in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai with technical support from English Premier League side Arsenal and Jean-Marc Guillou (JMG), a French ex-footballer and currently trainer.

Many players from this academy have been called up to the under-19 and under-23 national teams of Vietnam so many people have believed the facility is a success story of training young footballers for the country.

Guillou and the company JMG has nine academies throughout the world, including sites in the Ivory Coast established in 1994, Madagascar in 2000, Thailand in 2005, Mali in 2006, Algeria and Egypt in 2007, Ghana in 2008, and Belgium in 2009.

Xavi made the difference for Barcelona, says Busquets

The holding midfielder had nothing but praise for the ex-Spain international, while he insisted that he did not deliberately get himself booked

Sergio Busquets feels Xavi made the difference for Barcelona in their 1-0 La Liga win over Celta on Sunday evening.

The Catalans struggled in the opening 45 minutes at the Balaidos, but improved after the break following the introduction of the veteran midfielder in the 58th minute.

Xavi eventually provided the assist for Jeremy Mathieu’s winner and Busquets had nothing but praise for his compatriot.

“In the first half we couldn’t find any outlets and Celta were the better team. In the second half we figured it out and were much better,” Busquets told reporters.

“Things were different when Xavi came on. We started playing better and we enjoyed more possession with him on the pitch.”

Busquets picked up a yellow card that will keep him out of the match against Almeria due to suspension, but will see him available for the vital game against Sevilla.

Nevertheless, the midfielder was quick to stress he did not pick up a booking deliberately.

“I did not collect a yellow card on purpose. I was looking for options when I took the free kick. Apparently the referee felt I took too long.”

The 26-year-old was involved in a remarkable incident in the closing stages of the game as Fabian Orellana was sent off after launching a patch of turf at him, much to the Barca man’s surprise.

“I don’t really know what happened. It was a weird moment.

“Then again, things happen in football. What happens on the pitch stays there. I don’t bear a grudge.”

Foreign FCs eye VN striker Cong Phuong

Seeing the recently dazzling performances of Cong Phuong, a Japanese FC – Avispa Fukuoka, wants to “borrow” the young striker. However, it is not the first foreign team interested in Cong Phuong.

20150406093825-1

Cong Phuong was the best Vietnamese player in the qualifying round of U23 Asia Champs. In the game against Malaysia, he scored one goal and helped his teammate score the remaining goal, making a 2-1 victory for Vietnam.

In the match v.s Japan, Cong Phuong caused problems for Japanese players.

In the last match with Macau, Cong Phuong scored a hat-trick, contributing greatly to the 7-0 triumph of Vietnam, through which Vietnam won a card to the finals in Qatar next year.

Cong Phuong’s performance was praised by many newspapers in the region and many foreign FCs have been eyeing the Vietnamese striker, who plays for the V-League FC Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL).

HAGL FC’s boss Doan Nguyen Duc recently said that Avispa Fukuoka – a Japanese FC – wanted to “borrow” Cong Phuong, like the way Consadole Sapporo FC hiring Cong Vinh in 2013.

In fact, Avispa Fukuoka is not the first foreign team interested in Cong Phuong.

Last September, the director of the PSV Eindhoven Young Player Training Center, Art Langeler, called midfielder Danny van Bakel of Thanh Hoa FC to ask about Cong Phuong. He wanted to take Cong Phuong to the Netherlands. However, HAGL FC’s boss Doan Nguyen Duc said it was not the time for Cong Phuong to play football in Europe.

Early this year, a representative of Mito Hollyhock, another Japanese FC, went to Vietnam to track some Vietnamese football talents at the V-League, including Cong Phuong. He met with HAGL FC officials to discuss taking Cong Phuong to Japan but boss Doan Nguyen Duc refused. Sangju Sangmu, a Korean FC, was also very interested in Cong Phuong.

Even coach Arsene Wenger watched videotapes of some matches of Cong Phuong and highly praised Phuong’s techniques.

Cong Phuong ranked 3rd of the top goal-scorers at the 2015 Asian U23 Football Championship qualifications. He scored four goals at the qualification, just behind Omar Khribin of Syria (6 goals) and Australian Jamie Maclaren (5 goals).

Cong Phuong, 20, plays as a forward for Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) F.C. He is a product of HAGL – Arsenal JMG Academy. Phuong was promoted to HAGL F.C. first team in 2015.

He captained U19 Vietnam at 2014 AFC U-19 Championship. Nicknamed “Vietnamese Messi” by fans and media due to his playing style and body physique, Phuong is one of the most promising football talents in Vietnam.
