Disgraced Vietnamese football club Vissai Ninh Binh FC, who folded last year after nine players were banned for match-fixing, have revealed plans to reform.

Ninh Binh officials have petitioned the government and Vietnam Football Federation to allow them to resume next year with a revamped squad of young players, the club said in a statement on Sunday.

“Our boss Hoang Manh Truong still loves football very much and really regrets what happened after what he’d done to build up the team for many years,” Ninh Binh director Pham Van Le was quoted as saying by VietNamNet Bridge on Monday.

“We have discussed the matter and decided to come back.”

In August, a Vietnam court jailed their former international Tran Manh Dung for 30 months and dished out suspended sentences to eight other players found guilty of colluding with a bookmaker to throw a second tier regional AFC Cup game in March 2014 in return for a US$40,000 bribe.

That led to Ninh Binh withdrawing from the V.League amid fears domestic matches could have been rigged but they were surprisingly allowed to continue in the AFC Cup, eventually getting knocked out in the quarter-finals.

Vietnamese police said they tracked tens of millions of dollars in online betting daily during last year’s World Cup in Brazil.

Mata: Herrera is a genius

The Manchester United midfielder scored two goals in his side’s 3-1 win over Aston Villa and his fellow Spaniard insists he deserves great praise for his performances

Juan Mata called Ander Herrera a “genius” after his two goals inspired Manchester United to a 3-1 win over Aston Villa on Saturday.

Herrera opened the scoring at Old Trafford with a low shot past Brad Guzan before adding his second, and United’s third, in stoppage time to seal the win that moved Louis van Gaal’s side up to third in the Premier League table.

And Mata believes the former Athletic Bilbao star’s “genius” is now shining through after a slow start to his Old Trafford career.

He wrote on his blog: “It was a great day in Old Trafford.

“The team performed at a very high level, we fought from the very first minute to win the game and we were able to score in decisive moments to make things difficult for Aston Villa. We tried to use both wings and circulate the ball fast, and actually that’s how we scored.

“Three great goals I’d say. Wayne Rooney’s goal was spectacular, really nice to watch; not many players can score a goal like that. And two more goals from Ander. I think this is the first time he scores twice in a game and I’m very happy for him! The truth is he deserves it. He is a genius on and off the pitch and I know how happy he was after the game.”

Looking ahead to the Manchester derby clash on April 12, Mata believes the fixture could be decisive in the battle to finish in the Champions League spots. He added: “The team is improving, this is our fifth consecutive win in the Premiership and we want to keep this streak.

“Winning the derby against City next Sunday could be very important for the battle in the #top4. A derby is always special and we must be careful with City’s attacking players, because they can win the game in an isolated play.”

Allegri: Juventus must watch out for Salah

The Bianconeri boss has admitted the Egyptian attacker could trouble his side, but he remains hopeful of overturning their first-leg defeat

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri has singled out Mohamed Salah as Fiorentina’s main threat ahead of Tuesday’s Coppa Italia clash at the Artemio Franchi.

The Egypt international has made a great impression in Italy since joining on loan from Chelsea in January and he played a key role in his side’s 2-1 win in the first leg of their semi-final tie in Turin.

Allegri has stressed that the Serie A champions must be on top of their game to keep the 22-year-old quiet in the return tie and progress to the final.

“Salah? He’s a good player. Fiorentina have made an excellent signing,” Allegri said at a press conference.

“We’re out to overturn the scoreline in Florence. It won’t be easy and an intelligent display is required.

“To turn the tables we need to win by a two-goal margin. We need a good performance and calm heads.

“We need to be extremely patient and make the most of the chances that fall our way.

“Where did we go wrong in the first leg? The way we dealt with Salah’s goal and the first eight minutes of the second half.”

Allegri then went on to reveal that Andrea Pirlo is unlikely to feature against Fiorentina, but added that Claudio Marchisio has recovered from injury.

“Pirlo should be back with the group on Wednesday. We’ll check on his fitness.

“Marchisio is in good shape and back with the squad. His few days off have served him well.”

Ninh Binh FC seeks comeback

Ninh Binh FC managers have sent a petition to the Ninh Binh Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism as well as the Viet Nam Football Federation seeking permission to re-establish their football team after it was dissolved in January.

“Our boss Hoang Manh Truong still loves football very much and really regrets what happened after what he’d done to build up the team for many years,” said Pham Van Le, Ninh Binh FC’s executive director.

“We have discussed the matter and decided to come back,” he said.

Le said he was waiting for official agreement from the provincial department who’ve supported them in the past. Nguyen Van Sy has agreed to be their head coach. Sy was coach of the team before it was dissolved.

Young players who have trained with the club for the last four years will be key members of the team. They had been sent home after the team’s dissolution.

Ninh Binh will work with the VFF this week on the team’s proposed revival.

If things go as expected, the team will start training in May.

Truong had decided to give up the team after nine key players were indicted in a match-fixing scandal at the Asian Football Confederation Cup in 2014.

Monaco worse than Dortmund but Juve must watch out – Allegri

The coach has insisted his players avoid underestimating the Ligue 1 club but gave a glowing assessment of his charges after they defeated Empoli

massimiliano-allegri-juventus-coach-serie-a-04042015_s2py8gdyluc0185w0lnoruw4k

Massimiliano Allegri thinks Juventus ‘ Champions League quarter-final opponents Monaco are a worse team than Borussia Dortmund, who they defeated in the previous round, but warned against complacency.

The coach has overseen a rampant season so far in Turin, with the club still fighting on three fronts with two months to go in 2014-15 and the Serie A crown looking all-but secure.

Juve have disappointed in Europe in recent campaigns but will be hoping to turn over a new leaf by conquering French underdogs Monaco in the last eight this month.

“I saw a bit of Monaco’s draw with Saint-Etienne yesterday,” Allegri told reporters. “They might not have as much quality as Borussia Dortmund, but they are difficult to play against and the fact they’re underdogs will give them something extra.

“I told my players it doesn’t matter if you’re more talented in a Champions League quarter-final; you have to be better on the night.

“I brought my concepts to the squad and tried to improve those things that could be improved after winning the Scudetto for three years in a row. This team should be aware it’s one of the best in Europe, but we mustn’t get comfortable.”

Juventus battled to a 2-0 triumph over Empoli on Saturday and Allegri was pleased to see his team record yet another cleansheet – especially having not trained with his players for the best part of a fortnight.

“We allowed Empoli practically nothing in the first half, but after the break we tried to control the situation and did allow some risks to sneak in,” the coach added.

“It’s not easy to win four in a row with cleansheets. Many of the players only returned from international duty on Thursday, so they really do deserve complimenting.

“Empoli are a very organised side and played well, so we had to play between the lines and the only way to open them up was to keep moving their defenders from one side to the other.

“I’d say it’s a great victory against a team in good shape who were unbeaten in eight games.”

Carlos Tevez opened the scoring at the Juventus Stadium with an indirect free kick before Roberto Pereyra doubled the lead deep into second-half stoppage-time.
