Vietnam to play Macau in qualifier

Manager Toshiya Miura has urged Vietnamese players to practice on their straight shots to prepare for their match against Macau today (March 31) during the AFC U23 Championship qualifier in Malaysia.

Long shots: Vietnamese players walk off the field after their match against Japan during the AFC U-23 Championship qualifier on Sunday. They have practiced hard for their match against Macau in the last Group I encounter today in Malaysia.

During most of their practise session yesterday, the players trained to manage the ball obstacles during passes with high speed before netting the target from a distance of 20m.

This was one of the exercises done to ensure that Viet Nam side could score numerous goals against Macau during the last match of the Group I.

It was not a surprise that Miura would use his best players for the decisive game. However, the Japanese coach could not pick his favourite striker Vo Huy Toan, who had suffered a leg injury last week.

After a test yesterday, doctors said Toan was recovering well, but could not be part of the team today.

Toan had scored a goal during Viet Nam’s 2-1 win over hosts Malaysia on Friday.

Substitute Pham Duc Huy will replace him to guard the left wing of the Vietnamese team. As per the rules, the 10 group winners and five best second-placed teams would join hosts Qatar during the final round.

The only way for Viet Nam to advance is to beat Macau with a lot of goals and then await the results of the other group matches.

Miura said Viet Nam had to be really careful because Macau have shown with their formance against Malaysia on Sunday that they are no pushovers.

After losing to Japan 0-2 on Sunday, Viet Nam are at a disadvantage with only three points and a goal difference of -1.

The team are temporarily at the No 9 spot among the nine second-placed teams. The current top five are Indonesia, Yemen, Uzbekistan, Thailand and Myanmar. They all have six points each and a good goal difference.

On the Macau side, coach Tam Iao San revealed that his team had recruited student players, who have no competitive experience. The tournament was a chance for them to improve their skills.

In fact there are several players, who are competing in their national championship Liga de Elite, such as goalie Ho Man Fai, defender Man Chan, mid-fielders Hou Fai Tang and Ho Chi Fong.

Macau have lost all the previous matches, scored no goal and are currently placed at the bottom of the table.

Coach San said despite the losses, he was still happy because his players had learnt many thing.

Talking about the game today, San said there were many difficulties ahead as Viet Nam had a good striker (referring to Nguyen Cong Phuong) and many quality defenders.

The match will be aired live at 4pm on the K+ and VTV6 channels.

Vietnam eye rout over Macau in hope of advancing to Asian U-23 finals

Vietnam aim to score as many goals as possible against Macau in their encounter on Tuesday in Group I of the qualifiers of the AFC U-23 Championship in the hope of making it to the final stage.

The Vietnamese now rank second in the group with three points after a 2-1 win over Malaysia and 0-2 loss to Japan.

Macau have been eliminated after losing 0-2 to Malaysia and 0-7 to Japan.

An emphatic win over the underdogs will likely leave Vietnam as one of the five best second-place teams to advance to the finals of the AFC U-23 Championship, as long as second-place squads from the other groups fail to achieve their desired results during their last qualifiers today.

Ahead of the game with Vietnam in Malaysia, coach Tam Iao San of Macau said he wants to exit the qualifying round with at least one point.

Japanese coach Toshiya Miura of Vietnam admitted, “I think it’s not easy to crush Macau, especially after I watched their performance in their 0-2 defeat against Malaysia.”

Vietnam likely will stage an attacking formation of 3-4-3 to take on Macau. In the match with Japan two days ago, Vietnam played the defensive formation of 5-4-1.

The Vietnam-Macau game will be broadcast live on VTV6 at 4:00 pm today.

The AFC U-23 qualification has 43 participating football teams, divided into 10 groups.

According to the rules, the 10 teams who top their respective group will advance to the finals in Qatar next year. They will be joined by five second-place squads who have the best results during the qualifying round.

However, Vietnam are now at the bottom compared to other second-place rivals in the other groups, except Group B, which has not yet started competition.

After two matches, Vietnam have a goal difference of 2/3, Yemen from Group D 7/1, Uzbekistan from Group E 6/0, Myanmar from Group F 5/1, Thailand from Group G 7/2, Indonesia from Group H 7/0, and Laos from Group J 7/0.

Oman and Saudi Arabia with a goal difference of 10/1 and 7/0 respectively are in Groups A and C with five teams each.

VietNamNet Bridge – Japan’s Shoya Nakajima scored a double to make it two-out-of-two wins at the 2016 AFC U23 Championship qualifiers with a 2-0 win over Viet Nam yesterday (March 29) at the Shah Alam Stadium in Selangor, Malaysia.

The samurais launched wave after wave of attacks while Viet Nam struggled to protect their goal, and 22-year-old Nakajima opened the score in the 43rd minute.

Nakajima and teammate Takumi Minamino combined to slot the ball past Vietnamese goalie Phi Minh Long.

Huynh Tan Tan of Viet Nam nearly leveled the score just one minute later in a rare opportunity in Masatoshi Kushibiki’s area, but his shot went wide.

After the interval, things looked better for coach Toshiya Miura side as they limited Japan’s attacks.

However, Japan secured victory in added time as Nakajima converted with the Viet Nam asleep.

Hosts Malaysia claimed their first win of the campaign yesterday beating Macau 2-0 at the Shah Alam Stadium.

A goal in each half ensured the Malaysians gained their first win following an opening 2-1 loss at the hands of Viet Nam two days earlier.

Syahrul Azwari Ibrahim scored from the penalty spot in the 12th minute, while Wan Ahmad Amirzafran Wan Nadris made it 2-0 in the 67th.

Coaches praise Vietnam’s 0-2 loss to Japan in AFC U-23 qualification

Despite a 0-2 loss to Japan in their second match in Group I of the 2016 AFC U-23 Championship qualification in Malaysia on Sunday, Vietnam were cheered for their competitive spirit in staging a defensive formation against their stronger rivals.

Japanese coach Toshiya Miura of Vietnam had to select this playing style to slow down the Japanese opponents who were better than his players in speed, skills, fitness, ranking and experience, according to former Vietnam international Tran Minh Chien.

Despite being attacked, the Vietnamese players deserved praise for maintaining a good formation and distance between players, ex-striker Chien added.

This helped protect the goal frame of Vietnamese keeper Minh Long from dangerous assaults.

The defensive formation left playmaker Cong Phuong with fewer chances as he had to move around in front to disperse Japanese strength in attacks.

During the first half, Phuong had the ball nine times but could coordinate with his teammates only three times and faced challenges from two or three rival defenders in the remaining opportunities.

Japan had ball possession of 60 percent last night.

Both of the goals were scored in the last minutes of the first and second half, Chien noted, adding that the first goal was the result of the talent of Nakajima rather than the mistake of the center defenders of the Vietnamese side.

The other goal in the second half was scored at a rare moment when the Vietnamese defenders were distracted and Nakajima took advantage of the situation to fix the match at 2-0.

After beating hosts Malaysia 2-1 in the opening game on March 27, Vietnam aimed to limit the damage from Japan and will try to score as many goals as possible against Macau on March 31.

Through this method Vietnam hope to maintain second place in Group I and advance as one of the five best second-place teams.

The AFC U23 qualifiers feature 43 football teams divided into 10 groups. According to the rules, the 10 teams who top their group will advance to the finals in Qatar next year.

They will be joined by five second-place squads who have the best results during the qualification round.

Japan now lead Group I with six points, followed by Vietnam and Malaysia with three points.

Macau have been eliminated after losing 0-7 to the Japanese on March 27 and 0-2 to Malaysia on March 29.

Coach Tran Binh Su of Vietnam’s league club Dong Nai said that the 0-2 defeat at the hands of Japan is acceptable.

Miura said after the loss, “We had a hard game with Japan. We will try to rout Macau to advance.

“However, our chances still depend on the performances of the other teams in other groups.”

Vietnam beats host Malaysia 2-1 in a lucky win

The Vietnamese national men’s football team yesterday managed a 2-1 win over host Malaysia who reportedly started their second-string players for the match in Group I of the AFC U-23 Championship 2016.

Công Phượng - Huy Toàn trong niềm vui chiến thắng

Malaysian captain Nazirul Naim opened the scoring in the 34th minute after making a trademark left-footed blast from a distance of 37m to beat Vietnamese keeper Hoai Anh.

Five minutes later, striker Huy Toan of Vietnam leveled it 1-1 before his peer striker Cong Phuong fixed the match result at 2-1 in the 45th minute.

The first goal of Vietnam came after strategic coordination between defensive and attacking lines.

When Vietnamese strikers Toan and Phuong intruded deeply in front of the Malaysian box to attract the rival defenders, the ball was crossed to the left wing for Tien Dung to shoot.

Malaysian keeper Farhan couldn’t catch the ball and pushed it out and the loose ball came to Vietnamese striker Phuong, who kicked the ball back to Toan to level the result.

In the last minute of the first half, defender Que Ngoc Hai kicked a long pass to Cong Phuong in front. Phuong neutralized an offside trap of the rival defenders to face keeper Fahran before shooting across to net a second goal for Vietnam.

Before the match, it was reported that the host Malaysia would field their second-string players because their elite players are on a long training trip to prepare for the 2015 SEA Games in June in Singapore.

Malaysia doesn’t focus on the Asian competition forum, according to the source of information Tuoi Tre received.

The news was added with the fact that the stands at the Shah Alam Stadium were mostly empty.

Vietnam ready to face Malaysia

VietNamNet Bridge – Coach Toshiya Miura says Viet Nam’s national U23 team is primed to face Malaysia in the 2016 AFC U-23 Championship qualification match in Kuala Lumpur today, March 27.

“After a month of preparation, we are ready for the match against Malaysia. My players have improved their tactics and are in good physical condition. They are co-ordinating well with each other. We aren’t under any pressure and the players are feeling comfortable,” Miura said.

Viet Nam seem to have their best players for the match.

The qualifying round brings together 43 teams drawn in ten groups, with the ten group winners and five best runners-up will qualify for the finals to be held in Qatar early next year.

Viet Nam, in Group I along with Japan, Malaysia and China’s Macau, aim to finish second in the group.

Miura said Malaysia has also prepared carefully and played many friendlies.

“I appreciate Malaysia highly, but the chance to win for two teams is 50-50,” the Japanese coach said.

He also said that Japan are likely to lead the Group, so Viet Nam need to beat Malaysia to secure second place.

“Japan are too strong, they surpass other rivals so will easily top the group. I don’t know Macau much but Viet Nam can beat them. We must focus on defeating Malaysia. Only by besting the hosts can Viet Nam have hopes of entering the final round,” Miura said.

Malaysian coach Ismail Razip said at the press conference yesterday that his team was also ready for the match against Viet Nam.

“It is very important because it will decide who will move to the final. Malaysia wants to have a favourable start to create a driving force for the two remaining matches.”

Tran Huu Nghia, chairman of Viet Nam Football Fans, said not many fans from Viet Nam are flying to Malaysia today, but nearly 3,000 Vietnamese living and working in Malaysia will be at the Shah Alam Stadium to cheer their home team.

“We request Vietnamese fans to be friendly and avoid confrontations against other fans. We also suggest that the event’s organising board strengthen security and ensure safety for the match as well as Vietnamese fans, avoiding any regrettable problems,” said Nghia.

Violence broke out last December after Viet Nam beat Malaysia 2-1 in the first leg of the ASEAN Football Federation-Suzuki Cup semi-final in Malaysia. Fans from a section of the Malaysian crowd threw plastic bottles at Vietnamese supporters.

Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, president of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), told the media that Vietnamese fans will be safe.

The president said FAM has co-ordinated with security agencies to guarantee safety. Vietnamese fans will be seated comfortably in a “private” area, he said.

In other upcoming matches, Viet Nam will play Japan and Macau on March 29 and 31, respectively.

After the AFC qualifying round, Viet Nam will continue training in preparation for the 28th Southeast Asian Games in Singapore this June, where they hope to win the title.

VN sent home from FIFA qualifier

Viet Nam finished their FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup AFC qualifier with their third defeat yesterday (March 25) in Qatar.

Viet Nam were beaten 4-6 by Kuwait, who successfully paid their debt of losing 2-6 in their previous meet at the Asian Beach Games last year.

Striker Tuan Anh of Viet Nam scored a hat-trick after his teammate Vinh Long had his goal at the eighth minute of the game.

However, the Southeast Asian team failed to maintain their performance, leaving many chances for Kuwait players who converted six of them into goals.

Both two teams, however, were ousted from the Qatar event.

In previous matches, Viet Nam lost 2-3 to Japan and 2-3 to China in the penalty shootout after a 5-5 draw in official time.

The qualifier has lured 17 teams competing in groups from March 23-28.

The best two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-final round. The three top participants will get berths at the world final in June in Portugal.
