Chelsea and Everton fined £30,000 for fracas

Players from both teams confronted each other angrily in the final stages of the Blues’ 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge on February 11, resulting in a financial penalty and a warning

The Football Association (FA) has fined both Chelsea and Everton £30,000 for failing to control their players during their Premier League match in February.

Everton’s Gareth Barry was shown a second yellow card for a tackle on Willian in the closing stages of the game at Stamford Bridge, an incident that sparked a mass confrontation between the two sides.

“Following an incident in the 86th minute of their fixture on February 11, 2015, both clubs were charged with failing to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or refrained from provocative behaviour,” read an FA statement.

“The charge against Chelsea further alleged that their players surrounded the match referee and/or became involved in a mass confrontation.

“Chelsea and Everton both admitted their charge and, as well as being fined, were also warned as to their future conduct.”

Rooney: Di Maria had one of those dodgy days

The summer signing was withdrawn at half-time this weekend after another below-par performance, but his captain is confident the Argentine will come good

Wayne Rooney accepts that Angel Di Maria’s performances for Manchester United have disappointed after the Argentine was withdrawn at half-time against Sunderland on Saturday.

The British-record signing failed to make an impact at Old Trafford against Gus Poyet’s men, extending his run without a league goal to 14 games, and was replaced by Adnan Januzaj at the break.

Louis van Gaal later backed Di Maria to come good, hinting that he is low on confidence, and Rooney feels the Argentine will eventually prove why United parted with nearly £60 million to sign him from Real Madrid last summer.

“Di Maria’s performance was one of those days every footballer has,” Rooney told reporters. “He’s a great player, he’s shown that and you don’t lose your talent overnight.

“Hopefully he’ll get back to his best and start giving some great performances for us. He has a lot of experience and I think he’ll figure it out – we all have to do that sometimes.

“There’s nothing worse than when everyone keeps going on at you. You have to come to it in your own way and I’m sure he’ll be a big player for us between now and the end of the season.”

Rooney netted both goals as United beat the Black Cats 2-0 to remain on course for a top-four finish, but a number of fans booed the team during the game as frustations grew at Old Trafford.

When asked about discontent from supporters, Rooney told reporters. “I think that’s normal. The fans here are always brilliant – they want us attacking at every opportunity but you can’t do that all the time.

“Sometimes you have to work the opposition to tire them out which, towards the end, is how you win games.”

Mancini: Podolski not offering Inter enough

The Germany international has yet to score a single Serie A goal since joining the Nerazzurri on loan from Arsenal during the winter transfer window

robertomancini-cropped_ws2qija81ngc1r23fofdxwf07
Roberto Mancini has admitted that struggling striker Lukas Podolski is simply not offering Inter enough quality or incision up front.

Podolski joined the Nerazzurri on loan from Arsenal during the winter transfer window but the Germany international has yet to net a Serie A goal in eight appearances for the Milanese outfit.

The forward lasted just 66 minutes before being hauled off by Mancini in Sunday’s 1-0 loss at home to Fiorentina and replaced by Xherdan Shaqiri, who immediately injected more dynamism into the Inter attack.

Mancini thus confessed afterwards that Podolski must improve – and fast – if he is to have any chance of extending his stay at San Siro beyond the end of the season.

“Shaqiri did well but had played [on] Thursday, so it was right to give him rest,” the Inter boss told the club’s official website.

“Podolski must give more, so it is not enough and he is the first to know that.”

As for Inter’s defeat, which leaves them eighth in the Serie A standings, Mancini felt his side had paid the price for a poor first-half display – even though the game was decided by Mohamed Salah’s strike 10 minutes after the interval.

“We were generous, we know they are a good team and it was in my opinion a very balanced game,” the former Manchester City boss added.

“Had we found the equaliser immediately, maybe we could try to bring home a victory.

“The problem was that at first we were hesitant. Fiorentina are a team that dribbles well. In the first half we had to be bolder, more determined.”

The VFF said that it will work with Truong’s club Hoang Anh Gia Lai to prepare a detailed plan for his recovery.

Though the team’s head coach Toshiya Miura regretted to hear this news, he hasn’t called any player to replace Truong.

Liverpool in shootout misery, holders Sevilla win

Liverpool’s Europa League campaign ended at the scene of one of their greatest European triumphs as they lost 5-4 on penalties to Besiktas in the Ataturk Stadium on Thursday on a woeful night for British clubs.

Brendan Rodgers’s side were the highest profile casualties of the last 32, where holders Sevilla came through a testing encounter at Borussia Moenchengladbach, winning 3-2 on the night and 4-2 on aggregate.

But in a sign that Italian teams may not be the dying force in Europe they are sometimes made out to be, AS Roma were joined in the last 16 by compatriots Inter Milan, Fiorentina, Torino and Napoli.

Roma overcame crowd trouble and the temporary suspension of their match in Feyenoord to win 2-1 in a fiery atmosphere in Rotterdam and clinch a 3-2 success over the two legs.

The only British representatives in the last 16, however, will be Everton, who saw off Young Boys 7-2 on aggregate, after Premier League Tottenham Hotspur were beaten 2-0 at Fiorentina and Celtic had their hopes ended in a 1-0 defeat by Inter.

Turkish side Besiktas won their clash with Liverpool after Dejan Lovren missed the decisive penalty after the match ended 1-1 on aggregate following Besiktas’s 1-0 win on the night.

Croatia centre back Lovren blasted his effort high and wide to spark wild celebrations at the ground where Liverpool beat AC Milan on penalties 10 years ago to clinch a fifth European Cup.

Attacking lineup

The Merseysiders were playing at the Ataturk Stadium for the second time since their stunning 2005 comeback victory against Milan but, with club captain Steven Gerrardinjured, had no surviving members of that side on the field against Besiktas.

They picked an attacking lineup but were second best most of the night and Tolgay Arslan’s crisp, curling effort after 72 minutes from the edge of the area levelled the aggregate score and took the game into extra time and eventually penalties.

The first nine of both team’s spot kicks found their target, but Lovren stepped up, leant back and sent his effort high over the bar sparking raucous home celebrations.

The statuesque Croat was perhaps an odd choice to take a penalty, but boss Rodgers defended the decision.

“We were happy with the penalty takers and Dejan was confident. We’re obviously disappointed for him, because I felt in the game he played very well.”

Plastic banana

Roma’s passage into the last 16 was fraught after French referee Clement Turpin took the players off for more than 10 minutes after the home fans threw objects onto the pitch, including a giant plastic banana.

After Adem Ljajic gave Roma the lead and Elvis Manu had levelled for Feyenoord, who had Mitchell Te Vrede sent off which sparked the trouble, Gervinho netted the winner when he converted Vasilis Torosidis’s cross from he right.

Three-times winners Sevilla were twice pegged back by their German hosts, who had goalscorer Granit Xhaka sent off, before Vitolo rounded off a counter attack in the 79th minute with his second goal to complete the victory.

Inter edged Scottish champions Celtic 1-0 to go through 4-3 on aggregate after a high-scoring first leg was followed by a cagey return in Italy where Fredy Guarin got an 88th minute winner.

Inter’s Serie A rivals Fiorentina beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 on aggregate with German striker Mario Gomez and on loan Chelsea player Mohamed Salah scoring in the second half.

Two goals from Jose Rondon helped Zenit St Petersburg ease past PSV Eindhoven 3-0 in their second leg in Russia to complete a 4-0 aggregate success.

Ajax Amsterdam, Villarreal, Dinamo Moscow, Dynamo Kiev, VfL Wolfsburg, Club Bruggeand Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk also booked spots in the last 16 of Europe’s second tier competition which this season brings a Champions League spot for the winners.

U23 team train for AFC event

Viet Nam’s U23 team gathered at the Ha Noi-based Viet Nam Football Training Centre yesterday to practice for the 2016 AFC U23 Championship qualifier.

To ensure the best results for the team during training, their Japanese coach Toshiya Miura established firm rules for both reporters and fans.

Reporters are permitted to work on-site for the first 15 minutes of the practice sessions, after which the team’s training sessions will be strictly protected to keep fans from entering the grounds.

Moreover, the 51-year-old coach announced that he and his players would only answer selected questions from journalists once a week. The questions would have to be delivered in advance via email.

The team will challenge themselves during friendly matches before heading to Malaysia for the qualifying round, which is slated from March 23 to 31. They will also play against Toyota V.League 1’s Ha Noi T&T and Quang Ninh Coal, as well as the U23 teams from Indonesia, Uzbekistan and Thailand.
