Vietnam debates letting Arsenal-supported academy footballers play at ASEAN University Games

A debate has begun over the plan to send under-19 players from the Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) – Arsenal JMG Academy, who are semi-professional, to the 17th ASEAN University Games next month in Indonesia.

According to the Games’ regulations, nine of the HAGL players are eligible to compete in the student tournament in Palembang from December 9 to 19 because they are currently students at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Physical Education and Sports.
But the question is if Vietnam even needs a win at the event with those players, who have been training with one another since the age of 12 and were silver medalists at the 2013 Southeast Asian U-19 Championship in Indonesia, the 2014 under-22 Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy in Brunei, and the 2014 AFF Nutifood U-19 Cup in Hanoi.
Furthermore, the price for such a victory might be their possible subjection to injuries and overload in competition.
Ngu Duy Anh, head of the Student Affairs Department under the Ministry of Education and Training, was quoted by Thanh Nien newspaper as saying that, “We decided to assign the University of Physical Education and Sports to set up a football team to play in the tournament in Indonesia.
“The school selected Cong Phuong, Tuan Anh, and other players from the HAGL academy to join the team,” Anh said.
“We reminded the school to consider whether the players may become too fatigued to play the event.
“However, all the U-19 HAGL players have said they wish to be allowed to take part.”
The HAGL players have played many games in recent tournaments so many are worried they may feel exhausted in the coming competition.
Professor and Doctor Huynh Trong Khai, president of the university, promised that, “We will create chances for the players to follow academic programs and exams so that they aren’t affected by their participation in the event.”
Vietnam hopes to advance to the 2015 World University Games in South Korea where Japanese and South Korean teams, including professional players, will also compete, Thanh Nien cited Khai as saying.
French coach Guillaume Graechen of the Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) – Arsenal JMG Academy, who has trained the under-19 players for many years, supported the idea by telling the newspaper that, “I don’t think the players will become overloaded with the student tournament.
“It would be worrying if the players went a month without competing.”
Others argue that there will not be genuine pride if the HAGL players win the student tournament because they excel in football knowledge and practice.
Tran Huu Nghia, chairman of the Vietnam Football Supporters (VFS) association, told Thanh Nien, “The U-19 HAGL players have competed in over 40 matches this year, a record for young players, so they need time to rest.
“It will not be a good idea to send professional footballers to compete with students.”
One of Vietnam’s richest tycoons, 52-year-old Doan Nguyen Duc, spent US$4 million founding the Arsenal-supported football academy in 2007.
He then sent scouts across the country to find gifted kids to train at his Hoang Anh Gia Lai – Arsenal JMG Academy, located in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai.
The current under-19 HAGL players are the first batch of the academy’s training program.

Why couldn’t Lee Nguyen have high-flying career in Vietnam as in MLS?

Lee Nguyen is now grabbing the attention of the media in Vietnam, where his short-lived journey had an unhappy ending, following his hogging the limelight in Major League Soccer (MLS) with his Player of the Month award.

New England Revolution midfielder Lee Nguyen (24) dribbles the ball as Montreal Impact forward Andres Romero (15) chases during the second half at Stade Saputo in Montreal, Quebec Oct 11, 2014.

New England Revolution midfielder Lee Nguyen (24) dribbles the ball as Montreal Impact forward Andres Romero (15) chases during the second half at Stade Saputo in Montreal, Quebec Oct 11, 2014.

The New England Revolution midfielder took home the Etihad Airways MLS Player of the Month award for October – the final month of the season – after having a league-high nine game-winning goals this year, according to the MLS website.
The 2014 MLS regular season, running from March, ended on Sunday. Ten teams will compete in the postseason MLS Cup Playoffs in November and December, culminating in the championship game, the MLS Cup.
The 28-year-old, who holds dual citizenship in the U.S. and Vietnam, netted five goals last month alone, and a total of 18 during the season, which is fourth most in the MLS and the most ever by a pure midfielder in the U.S.’s highest-level football (soccer) league.
The award is the icing on the cake as Nguyen has been called up by the U.S. national team to prepare for two friendly games against Colombia and Ireland this month.
In Vietnam, the media are wondering why he just could not perform as impressively when playing in V-League, Vietnam’s top-flight league whose quality is undoubtedly far behind the MLS, as he has been doing in the American tourney.
The midfielder, whose Vietnamese name is Nguyen The Anh, made his professional debut for PSV Eindhoven in 2006, before moving to V-league side Hoang Anh Gia Lai on January 18, 2009.

Nguyen had 24 appearances in all competitions with the Vietnamese club in 2009, scoring 13 goals and adding 16 assists, according to his profile on the MLS website.
After a season with Hoang Anh Gia Lai, Nguyen trained with Arsenal in England in January 2010, and ended up signing a new deal with V-League’s Becamex Binh Duong FC the same month.
Nguyen only made 15 appearances in one and a half years, scoring a mere two goals, with Becamex Binh Duong before ending his journey in Vietnam in June 2011, having repeatedly suffered from injuries.

Mot The Gioi (One World), a Vietnamese-language newswire, reported on October 4 that Nguyen did not succeed at Hoang Anh Gia Lai because he was in conflict with the team’s then head coach, Thai legendary striker Kiatisak Senamuang.
The newswire quoted Nguyen’s father, Nguyen Pham – who lived with his son for six months at the club’s headquarters in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai in 2009 – as saying that the coach had been asking other players, especially the Thais, to isolate the Vietnamese-American player.
Phap Luat Thanh Pho (Ho Chi Minh City Law) newspaper published a picture with satirical captions in its Saturday issue, mockingly citing three reasons behind Nguyen’s unsuccessful career in Vietnam.
The captions say Nguyen was ‘boycotted,’ while his teammates refused to make assists for him, because he was paid extremely high salaries. He also became less professional after quickly adapting to the lifestyle of his Vietnamese fellows, who frequent clubs and beer gardens, the captions mock.
Finally, Nguyen also ‘learned’ from his local teammates to appear unmotivated as he would always be selected for the main formation, according to the captions.

Striker Nguyen Anh Duc jumped to score the first goal for Vietnam from a corner in the 11th minute, while Nguyen Van Quyet made the score 2-0 in the 79th minute and Thanh Trung completed the game with a goal in the fourth minute of injury time.

Bahrain had a chance to tie the score in the 17th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick. However, Kumail Alaswad did not beat Nguyen Thanh Binh with a spot kick.

MILAN: Depleted Lazio moved up to third place in Italy’s Serie A to sit six points off leaders Juventus after earning a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw away to Verona on Thursday (Oct 30).

Senad Lulic got the visitors off the mark three minutes before half-time but Verona were handed a lifeline when defender Luis Cavanda saw red for a second bookable offence after fouling Juanito Gomez in the area.

Veteran Verona striker Luca Toni stepped up to beat Federico Marchetti from the penalty spot and level in the 69th minute but Verona failed to capitalise on their man advantage.

VN win silver at beach football event

Viet Nam won the silver medal after losing to Malaysia 6-4 in the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Beach Football Championship final in Kuantan, Pahang Darulmakmur, Malaysia, on Wednesday.

Viet Nam were at a disadvantage after Malaysia scored three goals in the first half.

After the break, the visitors improved their game. Bui Tran Tuan Anh scored three goals and Vinh Phong netted one. However, taking full advantage of being the hosts, Malaysia managed to score their sixth goal in the second half.

“We made some mistakes at the beginning, and so we were punished. But we had a good tournament. We definitely learned a lot of things,” said Vietnamese coach Dang Quoc Hung.

Earlier, Thailand beat Laos 4-1 to take third place in the tournament, in which eight teams participated.

Viet Nam’s team returned home yesterday to prepare for the Asian Beach Games to be held in Thailand next month.

Buffon: Juventus must reach Champions League quarter-finals

The veteran goalkeeper believes his side must aim for the latter stages of Europe’s top competition, despite their group-stage struggles

529141_heroa

Gianluigi Buffon says reaching the Champions League quarter-finals should be a minimum requirement for Juventus this season.

The Italian champions endured an ignominious group-stage exit last season and have struggled for form in Europe in 2014-15, losing to both Olympiakos and Atletico Madrid so far.

Despite their travails in the Champions League, Buffon insists reaching the last four must be a target for Massimiliano Allegri’s side this term.

“I think it’s a question of feeling secure, it relies on victory,” he told reporters on Twitter when asked why Juve struggle for form in Europe. “We have it in Italy, but in Europe we’re yet to find it.

“In the Champions League we want to reach at least the quarter-finals. And we want to win back Serie A.”

Buffon made his 500th appearance for the club in the midweek defeat to Genoa but the 36-year-old maintains he is far from calling time on his illustrious career.

“I never thought of that goal, even though I’m an optimist by nature,” he added. “I’m fairly satisfied, but there are still more miles to go.”

Hart: We know we can do a lot better

Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart insists there is no need to panic about his side’s form after their winless run was extended to three matches with defeat to Newcastle

Joe Hart of Manchester City is consoled by Mark Noble of West Ham

Wednesday night’s 2-0 home loss in the Capital One Cup was the most disappointing yet in a run of results which began with a 2-2 draw against CSKA Moscow in Russia before a 2-1 loss to West Ham in London.

With the Manchester derby against United looming large on Sunday City must quickly rediscover their spark if they are to reverse the run.

“I think we’ve set up a good basis but in the last two or three games we’ve stumbled a bit,” Hart said on Sky Sports News. “Looking back, the Moscow second half was really disappointing for us. West Ham was a hard game, a really hard game and people are going to struggle there. We know we can do better, we know we can do a lot better.

“Then obviously the Capital One Cup was a trophy we were looking to defend and we were not up the standard we wanted to be and the manager didn’t shy away from that.”

Indeed, Manuel Pellegrini said after the match that he was worried about an apparent “lack of trust and confidence” within his squad, but Hart played down the meaning of the phrase.

“Those are keywords that he uses,” Hart said. “I don’t think they’re anything to be built on too much. We know what we are as a unit. Not everyone is exactly at their peak just now. We just need a few players, myself included, to step up and it will come back.

“This is one of those difficult patches we’ve gone through many a time and as he pointed out, last season we had less points and were in a worse position (at this stage) and we won the league. We’ve got to look to things like that but the main thing is to get it right on Sunday.”

Gerrard may not finish career at Anfield

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is keen to continue his career and admits he may be forced to move away from Anfield if the club fails to offer him a new deal

Brendan Rodgers, manager of Liverpool speaks with his captain Steven Gerrard

Gerrard, who joined the Liverpool Academy at the age of nine and is approaching 700 appearances in all competitions, is out of contract at his boyhood club at the end of the current campaign.

While the 34-year-old remains a pivotal player having played in all nine Premier League matches for Liverpool this season, he has cast doubt on whether he will remain with the club beyond next summer.

“I can only worry about this season because I’m only contracted until May,” Gerrard said in an interview with the Daily Mail.

“As it stands at the moment, I’m here until the end of the season and want to make the most of it. I certainly won’t be retiring this summer. I will play beyond this season.

“We will have to wait and see if that’s at Liverpool or somewhere else. That’s Liverpool’s decision. If they don’t come then I will see what’s out there.”

Gerrard also came to the defence of controversial striker Mario Balotelli, who has made an indifferent start to life at Liverpool with just two goals in 12 appearances and none in seven Premier League matches following his summer move from AC Milan.

Among those to have questioned the Italian’s credentials is Gerrard’s old friend and team-mate Jamie Carragher, who labelled Balotelli as a “panic” buy following the departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona over the summer.

Yet Gerrard said: “You have to respect Jamie’s opinion. He knows football but it’s too early to get on Mario’s back.

“He just needs time to score the goals he needs to prove to people he is worthy of staying here. I am not going to judge him after 10 games. To come in after Suarez was always going to be a big ask and he’s not feeling sorry for himself. He is working hard, doing extra shooting sessions.

“I’ve actually been impressed (with) the way he goes about his work. You hear all kinds of stories and rumours
