Wenger: It’s not impossible Thierry Henry could return to Arsenal

The club legend has been linked with a coaching job at the Gunners and his former manager has now acknowledged the speculation, admitting that such a move may happen

Arsene Wenger admits club legend Thierry Henry may return to Arsenal in a coaching capacity.

The Frenchman scored 227 goals during his first spell in north London, before adding another one to his tally during a loan return to the club in 2012.

Speculation has been rife that Henry could return for a third stint at the club, with his career in MLS with New York Red Bulls drawing to a close, and Wenger admits that a return to the Emirates could be on the cards in the future.

“It’s not something that’s current,” he told L’Equipe. “And then there must be a post available. For the moment, that’s not the case. But it’s not impossible.”

Wenger also aired his belief that Henry would be best served by emulating Zinedine Zidane when he finally hangs up his boots, and manage a reserve team before stepping up to a senior team.

“He is better to have responsibility for a team, like Zidane at Real Madrid,” Wenger added. “Because you learn to handle a dressing room, to handle personalities. This trade, it’s above all to have ideas and put them into practice.

“And you can only do that if you have the respect of your team. You have another example in France with Claude Makelele [sacked by Bastia after less than four months in charge]. He was an assistant coach [to Ancelotti then Blanc at PSG], but he never had the responsibility of a team before and I think that’s important.”

Wenger, though, is sure that Henry will become a good coach in the future, claiming that his talent is “obvious.”

“He is intelligent and passionate about football,” he added. “It’s a good base to be a great player, but there are many other ingredients. But yes, he could be a very good manager.

“He understands quickly, he understands the play. He has a good nature and is a nice manner with people. He has all the qualities. But it’s a choice that must come profoundly from the inside, because it’s a lifestyle choice.

“You must sacrifice everything to be a manager. It’s a calling. The real question that must be asked is: ‘Are you ready to sacrifice everything, the rest of your days for this?’ After that, his potential exists. It is so evident.”

Pogba: I play like Yaya Toure

The midfielder has been studying the Manchester City midfielder amongst a number of other players in his position in a bid to improve his game

Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba has likened his playing style to that of Manchester City star Yaya Toure.

The France international signed a new contract with the Serie A champions until 2019 on Friday, having become a key figure for club and country since arriving in Turin after leaving Manchester United on a free transfer two years ago.

Juve boss Massimiliano Allegri said over the weekend that Pogba still has lots of work to do to become one of the best players in the world and he has responded by revealing how he studies many of the game’s finest players in his position.

“I think there are lots of players still better than me, but it’s not up to me to worry about this sort of comparison,” he told Fifa.com. “I try to do my job and be the best I possibly can.

“There are lots of midfielders I admire and watching them helps me improve. I could mention, for example, Yaya Toure, who has a similar size and physique to me but more experience. We have more or less the same playing style, even if he’s a bit more attacking than me.”

Pogba featured at his first World Cup in Brazil earlier this year, playing a key role as France made the quarter-finals before bowing out to eventual winners Germany.

Les Bleus coach Didier Deschamps is one of two midfield greats to have worked with Pogba – ex-Juve boss Antonio Conte the other – and the former Manchester United prodigy feels both both have aided his development.

“I’ve progressed with both of them. Didier Deschamps, for example, knows me very well and knows how to manage me,” he added.

“He helps me improve every day, whether it’s in training or in a match.

“He gives me the desire to give my best. He always gives me good advice and he’s very honest with me. As a player, you really appreciate getting trust and encouragement from your coach.

“What he tells me most is to, ‘stay focused and keep things simple’, the way he used to do so well.”

The Hoang Anh Gia Lai-Arsenal-JMG U21 team tasted victory for the first time after crushing Thailand’s U21 team, 3-0, in the final game of the International U-21 Football Tournament yesterday.

Le Van Son opened the score with a spot kick at the 15th minute while maestro Nguyen Cong Phuong added two goals in the second half to give the host the convincing victory, the trophy and the US$12,000 cash prize.

Thailand won the US$7,000 prize for second place. Viet Nam’s U21 team fought back to win over Malaysia’s U21 team, 2-1, to finish third in an earlier match yesterday.

Hoang Anh Gia Lai, the host U19 team, finished their seven-year course at the Arsenal style football academy and used a one-way play for most of the first half.

Thailand set up a crowd defence to block stormy attacks from the host with home support going crazy. Xuan Truong made the crowd roar just 11 minutes into the game with a long-range shot, which went high over the bar.

In the 16th minute, Nguyen Cong Phuong, the winning team’s captain, earned a penalty kick when he was pulled down in the 18-yard box after breaking through Thailand’s defence. Le Van Son then scored on the penalty kick.

Four minutes later, Nguyen Van Toan missed a clear chance to score his goal when he made a solo at the left corner, but his shot went wide off the post.

Thailand launched a lone attack in the first half as they played a small line-up to limit the power of Gia Lai and reserve energy for the second half.

Gia Lai kept pressing the visitors in the second half, but Thanh Tung and Hong Duy failed to take advantage of clear opportunities.

Thailand ramped up its play with an attack in the second half. At the 56th minute, substitute Boonkerd Chaiyasin fired a shot while on a rapid attack, but Vietnamese goalkeeper Pham Van Tien saved the ball.

At the 76th minute, maestro Cong Phuong teamed up with Thanh Tung in the penalty area before firing an accurate shot to the back of the net.

Nguyen Van Toan missed two clear chances at the 88th and 91st minutes when his close-range shots failed to hit the target.

Thailand’s players nearly lost control of the game and pushed the squad forward to pull back a goal.

At the 5th minute of injury time, Cong Phuong found his second goal of the game when he tapped the ball in from Thanh Tung’s cross following perfect teamwork

Suarez: Call me a biter or a diver, but not a racist

The controversial attacker remains adamant that he was misunderstood during the incident with Patrice Evra back in October 2011

511751_heroa

Barcelona attacker Luis Suarez says he is happy to be labelled a “biter or a diver” but insists he is no racist, despite being banned for eight games in 2011 for abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra while at Liverpool.

The Uruguay star’s career has been littered with episodes of indiscipline, with his suspension three years ago proceeded by a 10-game punishment for biting Branislav Ivanovic in April 2013 and a four-month ban from football after chewing on the shoulder of Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.

However, though Suarez has now acknowledged he was wrong to physically attack both players in his new autobiography, he maintains his innocence over the incident involving himself and Evra.

“Call me a biter or a diver, but I’m not a racist. I was banned for eight games and, much worse, got labelled a racist for life. It’s a serious accusation,” the Guardian reveals in an extract from the attacker’s new book.

“It hurts because of how it affects me, it hurts because my wife had to suffer too through the hearing, watching me getting accused of being someone she knows I’m not, and it hurts because in the future the stain will still be there when my children grow up. It’s a slur on my name that no one can take away.

“Did I use the Spanish word ‘negro’ in an argument that took place, in Spanish, with Patrice Evra on 15 October 2011 in a game between Liverpool and Manchester United?

“Yes.

“Is the word ‘negro’ the same in Spanish as it is in English?

“No, absolutely not.

“Am I a racist?

“No, absolutely not.

“I was horrified when I first realised that is what I was being accused of. And I’m still sad and angry to think that this is a stain on my character that will probably be there forever.”

The 27-year-old made his official Barcelona debut at the weekend in the 3-1 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid after serving his four-month ban.

Inter no longer in crisis, says Hernanes

The midfielder is optimistic about his side’s chances of success this season after overcoming a difficult start to the 2014-15 campaign

517961_heroa

Inter midfielder Hernanes believes the Giuseppe Meazza side have averted a crisis following their 1-0 Serie A win over Cesena.

Walter Mazzarri declared the club were in a state of emergency after drawing 0-0 with Saint-Etienne in the Europa League on Thursday having drawn 2-2 with Napoli in the league the previous weekend.

The club’s honorary president Massimo Moratti also announced his resignation last week amid reports he wanted the Nerazzurri boss fired, but Mauro Icardi’s solitary strike on Sunday eased the pressure on Mazzarri an prompted Hernanes to declare all is well again at San Siro.

“We’re out of our tough period; now we can build on this, showing the same desire and playing better football,” the Brazil international told Inter Channel.

“We’ve won and we’re going home with three points – that’s the most important thing. The team showed character and will to win; we must continue like that, always playing with great heart.

“Football is a crazy game. When you want to win at all costs, maybe you lose a bit of nerve when looking for the right pass. We were lacking the knock-out blow against Cesena, but as I was saying, if you’re not calm you can’t make the right decisions.”

Inter have climbed to eighth spot in the table following their win over Cesena.
