Real Madrid 5-1 Elche: Ronaldo hits four as Blancos go fourth

The Portuguese gave away a penalty but, after Gareth Bale’s equaliser, the Ballon d’Or holder then went on the rampage at the Santiago Bernabeu

459907_heroa
Cristiano Ronaldo struck four times as Real Madrid maintained their remarkable resurgence with a 5-1 victory over Elche at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday evening.

Having scored a hat-trick in the 8-2 mauling of Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday, the Portuguese was again in imperious form as he went one better on Tuesday.

He converted two penalties on his way to a four-goal haul as Real once again produced a dazzling display.

Ronaldo’s night had hardly begun as he would have wished – he was at fault for the 15th-minute penalty that gave Elche a shock lead through Edu Albacar.

But a wounded Madrid – and Ronaldo in particular – rallied, with three quick goals of their own through Gareth Bale and a double from the FIFA Ballon d’Or winner to lead at the break.

His third came with 10 minutes remaining before the fourth – a typically cool finish from Bale’s pass – arrived in injury time, as Elche simply had no response.

After conceding eight goals in four La Liga matches, Iker Casillas was dropped in favour of Keylor Navas in goal for Real but 15 minutes into his debut the Costa Rican was picking the ball out of his net after Ronaldo had conceded a penalty.

The Portugal international was punished for making contact with Pedro Mosquera when clearing a corner and Albacar lashed the spot-kick into the top corner, giving Navas no chance despite the goalkeeper diving the right way.

Elche’s lead only lasted five minutes, though, as Madrid came surging back into the game with three goals in 12 minutes.

James Rodriguez created the first after 20 minutes with a pin-point cross from the left that Bale met with a glancing header, although Manu Herrera should have done better in the Elche goal as the ball slipped under his grasp.

Real went ahead for the first time eight minutes later when they were awarded a penalty of their own – Mosquera adjudged to have brought down Marcelo.

Ronaldo ‘s emphatic spot-kick gave Herrera no chance and four minutes later the forward scored again with a perfectly placed header.

Marcelo made progress down the left before firing a cross in towards Ronaldo , who outjumped Sergio Pelegrin and headed the ball into the bottom corner.

Chances continued to come for the hosts but Sergio Ramos, Toni Kroos and Ronaldo were all denied by Herrera before half-time.

Both sides had early sights of goal after the break but Coro and Ronaldo were both wayward with their finishing as they blazed over the crossbar from inside the penalty area.

Herrera was called into action after 66 minutes when a quick free-kick from Kroos gave Ronaldo a clear shot at goal and despite the wall collapsing in front of him, the goalkeeper made a good save with his feet.

With 10 minutes remaining, Madrid were awarded a second penalty of the match as substitute Mario Pasalic felled Ronaldo .

Having dusted himself down, the 29-year-old took the spot-kick himself and once again gave Herrera no chance as he completed his hat-trick.

However, Ronaldo was not finished there and, having received a through-ball from Bale in stoppage time, he poked the ball past Herrera to secure Madrid an emphatic win.

Bayern Munich 4-0 Paderborn: Gotze at the double for brilliant Bavarians

The Germany ace helped himself to two goals, while Robert Lewandowski scored a screamer and Thomas Muller netted late on as Pep Guardiola’s men got their mojo back

459908_heroa

Mario Gotze scored twice as Bayern Munich returned to winning ways with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Paderborn on Tuesday night.

Pep Guardiola’s side may have been unspectacular in the opening four games of their title defence, yet Bayern never looked like losing at the Allianz Arena against Paderborn, as Gotze’s double, Robert Lewandowski’s half-volley and Thomas Muller’s close-range finish late on secured victory and top spot in the table.

Paderborn, competing in the Bundesliga for the first time, sat top on goal difference ahead of Bayern prior to Tuesday’s game after an encouraging start to the campaign, but they were well beaten by the champions.

Gotze gave Bayern the lead after just eight minutes, steering home following a fine flick from Muller.

Lewandowski hit back at his critics with a 25-yard effort in the 14th minute and Gotze netted his second 12 minutes from time before Muller applied a neat finish to Arjen Robben’s 85th-minute cross to end Paderborn’s unbeaten start to Bundesliga life.

Guardiola threatened to ban his players from celebrating Oktoberfest if they failed to beat Paderborn, but Bayern never looked like slipping up as Gotze broke the deadlock early on.

Robben, back after missing Saturday’s goalless draw with Hamburg, played Muller into the area and the German forward produced a delightful backheel for Gotze , who stroked a first-time effort into the net.

Gotze fired a tame effort at Lukas Kruse as he went in search of a second, but Bayern did make it 2-0 after 14 minutes.

Lewandowski produced a fine first touch 25 yards out, teeing the ball up perfectly for a half-volley that Kruse failed to keep it out.

The hosts continued to attack, as Lewandowski, Gotze and David Alaba all saw chances go begging, while Idir Ouali prodded straight at Manuel Neuer on the counter-attack for Paderborn’s best chance 24 minutes in.

Gotze nearly added a third just before the break, as his low drive from the edge of the area deflected agonisingly wide.

Bayern started the second half in a far more relaxed fashion and that seemingly presented Paderborn with the opportunity to fight their way back into the contest.

The visitors crafted a good opening in the 58th minute as Rafinha cheaply surrendered possession and allowed Ouali to deliver a teasing cross from the left, but Xabi Alonso crucially poked it behind for a corner.

Bayern needed Neuer at his best in the 70th minute as Suleyman Koc ran at Alaba and sent a stinging effort towards the bottom-right corner.

Any hope of a late comeback was ended 11 minutes from time, though, as Gotze smashed in from close range following a clever Robben run down the right.

And the Dutch winger then played a decisive role again in Bayern’s fourth.

The former Chelsea man darted past his man and fired a low ball in towards the front post to allow Muller to nip in to divert past the helpless Kruse.

Vietnam at ease before Asiad women’s football semifinal with Japan

The Vietnamese women’s team feel free from any psychological pressure when facing world and Asian champions Japan in the semifinals of the women’s football event at the 17th Asian Games (Asiad) Incheon on Monday.

Vietnamese players are seen during a training session on September 28, 2014 in South Korea to prepare for the Japan semifinal one day later.

Vietnamese players are seen during a training session on September 28, 2014 in South Korea to prepare for the Japan semifinal one day later.

Experts predict that it will not be difficult for Japan to advance to the finale after their clash with Vietnam later today.
Their encounter will begin at 3:00 pm (Vietnam time) in Incheon, South Korea.
Hosts South Korea will take on their neighbors North Korea in the other semifinal three hours later the same day.
Coach Mai Duc Chung and his Vietnamese players stressed that they will fight hard to please fans and learn from their world-class rivals.
The coach admitted that the gap between the two sides is huge, even though the Vietnamese national women’s football team now rank seventh in Asia.
“We are happy to be members of Vietnam’s first national football team to advance to the last-four round of an Asiad,” said goalkeeper Kieu Trinh. Vietnam eliminated Thailand after a 2-1 victory in the quarterfinals last Friday.
“We feel relaxed ahead of the match with Japan. We hope to have a better result than the one at the last Asian Cup.”
Vietnam were beaten 0-4 by Japan at the 2014 Asian Cup organized in May in Ho Chi Minh City.
Japanese coach Norio Sasaki highly rated the Vietnamese defense.
“Vietnam are a difficult team to defeat.
“At the Asian Cup last May, it took Japan almost 45 minutes to open the scoring, and I think the Vietnamese are even stronger now.
“I highly rate their defense, high spirit, and counterattack” said Sasaki.
Vietnam have skilled players such as Nguyen Thi Lieu, Nguyen Thi Nguyet, Nguyen Thi Muon, and Nguyen Thi Minh Nguyet, he added.
Japan were crowned queens at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany after beating the United States 3-1 in a penalty shootout, following a 2-2 draw after extra time. They were the first Asian team to win the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Japanese women went on to defeat Australia 1-0 in the finale of the 2014 Asian Cup in Vietnam to capture their first such title.

Vietnam hope to make history at Asian Games, coach says ahead of UAE clash

Vietnam hope to make history against the United Arab Emirates, who have an upper hand in the men’s football last-16 match at the 2014 Asian Games today, September 26, coach Toshiya Miura said Thursday.

Vietnam's Toshiya Miura speaks to his players during a training session before their men's football last-16 game against the UAE at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea on September 25, 2014.

Vietnam’s Toshiya Miura speaks to his players during a training session before their men’s football last-16 game against the UAE at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea on September 25, 2014.

The Vietnam squad is on the verge of advancing to their first-ever Asian Games quarterfinal, if they can beat the UAE, the silver medalists at the 2010 Games in Guangzhou, China, at 0700 GMT today in Incheon, South Korea.
Miura said he is “50 percent upbeat, and 50 percent realistic” about the match, where both teams will use under-23 players, as per the Games policy.
The Japanese-born coach hasn’t lost since he took the helm of the Vietnam squad in May. Miura said he wants another win to retain that string of victories.
Vietnam earned a spot in the last-16 as Group H leaders, while UAE were the runners-up in Group G, behind India. Four-time gold medalists Iran failed to make it through the group stage following a shock 1-4 defeat to Vietnam, and a 1-1 draw with Kyrgyzstan.
The Vietnam boss said he had been fully briefed on the UAE’s last group stage match, where they lost 1-0 to Jordan on September 18, and acknowledged two or three ‘dangerous’ players from the Middle Easter sides.
The UAE are a strong team in Asia, and they hold an upper hand against Vietnam, Miura admitted.
But, he added that he has inspired and energetic players with burning desire for victory.
With all of his players at least 1.75 meters tall, Miura is confident that Vietnam faces little difficulty when dealing with tall rivals or fighting for high balls.
Vietnam will use quick ball movements in the UAE clash, and the players have been practicing many different kinds of free kicks, the coach added.
Miura also appreciated the enthusiastic cheering of Vietnamese fans in their group stage matches.
While there were only 200 Vietnamese supporters at the Vietnam – Iran match on September 15, around 1,000 fans came to cheer when Vietnam defeated Kyrgyzstan 1-0 on Monday.
The coach said the supporters actually inspired his players to triumph, adding that he hoped to see even more fans at the last-16 match, where the team can make history.
Meanwhile, the UAE coach, Ali Ibrahim, told UAE newswire The National on Thursday that he is confident of his side’s chances for victory over Vietnam.
“Indeed, they have been impressive, but I believe my team is equally strong and has the quality to win against them,” he was quoted as saying.
“We had a good break and have prepared well during this period, knowing who we are meeting.”
Ebrahim also told The National on Tuesday that facing Vietnam in the round of 16 is “no surprise” for them.
“The moment Iran were beaten and we finished second in our group, it became very clear we would meet them,” the Emirati said.
UAE had expected to finish first in Group G, and for Iran to top Group H.
“That didn’t happen, but here we are still facing Vietnam,” the coach said

Under-fire Pardew expects ‘serious conversations’ with Ashley

The Newcastle boss saw his side succumb to Stoke City on Monday, extending their winless streak, and admits he will discuss the situation with the club’s owner this week

462596_heroa
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is preparing for “serious conversations” regarding his future with owner Mike Ashley after Monday’s 1-0 Premier League loss to Stoke City.

Defeat at the Britannia Stadium – Peter Crouch’s first-half header was all that separated the teams – leaves the Magpies still without a league win in 2014-15 and puts Pardew under even further pressure after a week in which Ashley was reported to have claimed that the sack would follow a negative result.

Pardew was jeered by the travelling support as the game wound to an end, and has borne the brunt of fan frustrations for several weeks, but the 53-year-old has vowed to continue to fight to save his job.

When asked if he expected to face crunch talks in the immediate aftermath of Monday’s game, Pardew told Sky Sports: “No, we will have some serious conversations before Saturday. He [Ashley] doesn’t want to lose and neither do I.

“I’ve never really been in this situation before, it’s a bit unique. But I’m a professional football manager and that’s what I’ll continue to do.”

Jack Colback rattled the crossbar from four yards in the game’s dying stages as a point slipped out of reach and Pardew conceded a lack of spark up front had cost his team throughout.

“We didn’t come up with the answers tonight,” he said. “We just need a little bit of something in that final area.

“Jack is beating himself up in there, I thought his game was terrific tonight against a good midfield.

“We let ourselves down on the goal and that was the difference really. It leaves us in a position where we are in the bottom three. I have to fight, the team has to fight, to turn this around.”

Rooney sorry over “reckless lunge”

Wayne Rooney apologised to his Manchester United team-mates for his reckless lunge on Stewart Downing and has no plans to appeal the red card.

456189368

Louis van Gaal’s second win as Manchester United manager against West Ham was overshadowed by Rooney’s dismissal, which came in the second-half of an ill-disciplined match at Old Trafford.

In an incident which was not seen by the officials at the time, Luke Shaw was allegedly headbutted off the ball by Diafra Sakho, who may now face retrospective punishment, and referee Lee Mason struggled to keep a lid on tensions at times in the second half.

The biggest decision the referee made came in the 59th minute when he sent off Rooney for cutting down West Ham midfielder Downing as he sprinted down field.

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce branded the foul “crazy and irresponsible” while Rooney had no complaints about his dismissal.

Rooney was glad United held on for a 2-1 win and after the final whistle the captain apologised to his players in the dressing room.

“Yeah, of course I did (apologise),” the United striker said.

Rooney now looks set to miss United’s games against Everton, Chelsea and West Brom through suspension.

When asked whether he would appeal against his ban, the England skipper said: “No. I understand it (the punishment).

“I knew at the time that I misjudged it.

“It is a red card and I don’t it will benefit anyone to appeal against the decision.

“It was probably the right decision. I saw the West Ham player making a counter-attack and I tried to break-up the play, but I just misjudged it.

“I think everyone knew (I was in the wrong), so I am just grateful that the lads were able to hold on.”

Rooney had a reputation as something of a hot head in his early years, but this was the first time he had been sent off for United in five-and-a-half years.

The 28-year-old, whose dismissal came the day before the 10th anniversary of his United debut, is aware questions about his temperament will be raised again following the sixth red card of his career.

“I expect people to say that, but at the end of the day, I was trying to break up the play,” he said.

“It was a dangerous situation in that they were trying to break on us and I have just misjudged it, simple as that, but I have no complaints.”

When asked whether he felt the need to apologise to Downing, Rooney said: “No. I haven’t absolutely volleyed the lad.

“I have tried to trip him up and, to be fair to him, he got further away from me and that is why my leg is straighter than it should have been.

“As he pushed the ball away, my leg has straightened out and that is obviously why the referee has deemed it as a red card.”

Rooney started off the match in fine fashion, clipping the ball past Adrian from a Rafael cross to put United ahead.

Robin van Persie then doubled United’s lead before Sakho headed in a goal for West Ham to put the home fans on edge.

Rooney will play for England in next month’s Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino and Estonia, but he will not turn out for United until the first weekend of November, when United play bitter rivals Manchester City.

Rooney is not looking forward to watching United from the stands.

“That’s the most disappointing thing,” said the striker, who has scored three times for the club this term.

“Obviously we got away with it today by getting the win, but I am really gutted that I am going to be missing the next three games.

“It is hard to take.

“It helps that the England games are coming up, but the training here is really good.

“It is tough and it is getting my fitness up there, so I just have to make sure I train well and be ready for when I come back.”

Shaw, who left Old Trafford with a black eye following the alleged elbow by Sakho, thinks Rooney should have stayed on the pitch.

”We have actually had a lot of bad luck, especially with Wazza’s red card as I would say there was a handball before that but the referee didn’t stop play,” said the 19-year-old, who was making his United debut.

West Ham captain Kevin Nolan was unhappy with linesman Andrew Garratt for flagging him offside when he turned in Carl Jenkinson’s cross in the 89th minute.

”I know he has definitely gambled on it because he can’t have seen it, because if he had seen it he wouldn’t have given it offside,” Nolan said.
