Vietnam, Kyrgyzstan fight to top Asiad men’s football Group H

Vietnam and Kyrgyzstan are to play their last group stage match on Monday to decide the winners of Group H in the men’s football (soccer) event at the 2014 Asian Games (Asiad), which is taking place from September 19 to October 4 in Incheon, South Korea.

Coach Toshiya Miura is seen guiding Vietnamese players in a recent training session to prepare for the Kyrgyzstan match in the men's football event at the 2014 Asian Games in South Korea on September 22.

Coach Toshiya Miura is seen guiding Vietnamese players in a recent training session to prepare for the Kyrgyzstan match in the men’s football event at the 2014 Asian Games in South Korea on September 22.

The Vietnamese lead the group of three teams after beating Iran 4-1 last Monday. Kyrgyzstan follow in second place thanks to a 1-1 draw with the Iranians on Thursday.
The event is exclusively intended for under-23 players.
Vietnam have already secured a place in the last-16 round, as the top two point earners advance.
Although Vietnam only need a draw against Kyrgyzstan to top Group H, the men, led by Japanese-born coach Toshiya Miura, aim to win over the Central Asian rivals.
Coach Miura said, “We target to top Group H.
“It will be more difficult if my players enter the field with the goal of earning a tie because 90 minutes is a long time.
“We want to defeat Kyrgyzstan.”

During training sessions over the last few days, the Vietnamese players have rehearsed ways to beat their tall rivals by closely marking those who are controlling the ball to prevent them from making high passes into the box.
Vietnam also practiced fast attacks to beat Kyrgyzstan’s defense.
In today’s game, Vietnamese left midfielder Phi Son will likely start to replace Huy Toan, who is injured.
“Kyrgyzstan’s players displayed an effective defense in the 1-1 draw with Iran, so today will be a difficult match for Vietnam,” said Miura. “However, we have our ways to win.”
Coach Eshenov Mirlan of Kyrgyzstan said cautiously, “Vietnam are a strong team. They play fast football and perform good connections.
“The Vietnamese players are also good at scoring.
“We won’t be subjective.
“My players will improve their scoring ability to get the group’s second ticket to the round of 16.”
Kyrgyzstan and Iran hold one point each, but the former have a better goal difference than the latter. It is now 1-1 for Kyrgyzstan and 2-5 for Iran.
The match will be aired live at 3:00 pm (Vietnam time) on Vietnamese TV channel SCTV 15.
Team Vietnam ranks eighth on the medal tally of the 17th Asian Games Incheon 2014, with one gold, two silvers, and four bronzes.

Vietnam football body rapped for wanting to send youth team to World Cup qualifiers

A local football (soccer) pundit has slammed the intention by the chairman of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) to send the national under-19 team to compete in the Southeast Asian Games and even the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, following their recent impressive performances.

Fans 'redden' My Dinh Stadium to support the Vietnamese national U-19 football team at the AFF Nutifood U-19 Cup this month in Hanoi.

Fans ‘redden’ My Dinh Stadium to support the Vietnamese national U-19 football team at the AFF Nutifood U-19 Cup this month in Hanoi.

Le Hung Dung, a banking tycoon who now chairs the VFF until 2018, has publicly said that he supports the idea of using the U-19 team for the men’s football event at the 28th Southeast Asian Games in Singapore next year.
“We are not going to be the first to do that because Malaysia did so before and thus produced a generation of players who have won the Southeast Asian Games men’s football gold medal several times in recent years,” local newswire VietnamNet quoted Dung as saying.
Dung added that the young players may lose in the first place but they will grow up and bag the medal many times later on.
“After their participation in competitions like the Southeast Asian Games men’s football event, the U-19 team will be tasked with partaking in the qualification round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup [to be hosted by Russia],” Dung said. “My term will last until 2018 and I will defend this point of view.”
In response, Nguyen Van Vinh, a 72-year-old football expert who used to work as a senior consultant for top-flight V-League club Hoang Anh Gia Lai, said in a recent interview with Phap Luat TPHCM (Ho Chi Minh City Law) newspaper that VFF officials act as if they were the owner and trainer of the U-19 players.
The U-19 squad is composed mostly of players from the first batch of footballers who have completed six out of seven years of training at Hoang Anh Gia Lai – Arsenal JMG Academy, located in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai.
Doan Nguyen Duc, one of Vietnam’s richest moguls, spent US$4 million on founding the Arsenal-supported football academy in 2007. He then sent scouts across the country to find gifted kids to train at his state-of-the-art facility.
Duc has yet to give any comment on this issue.
Vinh, who served as a senior advisor to Duc’s Hoang Anh Gia Lai club in the past, argued that if national football teams are seen as brothers in a family, the U-19 team members are the youngest brothers and thus cannot replace their elders.
The U-19 team’s participation at the AFF Nutifood U-19 Cup 2014, the Southeast Asian youth championship that concluded earlier this month in Hanoi, was mainly for training to grow up and should not be used to measure the players’ flair to send them to a more senior competition, the seasoned pundit said.
Vinh added that the young team may be ‘exploited’ now by some leaders to find good results for their reports to higher levels in order to keep their positions.
The man said he was ashamed to hear a VFF leader announce that the U-19 team will be sent to the qualifiers of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
A capable leader works out long-term plans for national sports development, not just for a single team, Vinh said.
Many developed countries have dozens of football training places like Hoang Anh Gia Lai – Arsenal JMG Academy, which is still unique in Vietnam.
And these countries usually draw up plans decades before they think of taking part in the World Cup as a genuine competitor, Vinh said.
Duc has used his own money to invest in the academy that has been churning out good players, Vinh noted.
In the meantime, FIFA – the global football governing body – has provided the VFF with much funding to develop Vietnam’s football but the local federation has still failed to present a “competitive product,” he said.
The expert pointed out that in April this year, FIFA announced an $800,000 sponsorship package for Vietnam to build football facilities.
Vinh stressed that the U-19 players have been competing in tournaments merely intended for training, not for turning them into a grown-up team overnight.
The VFF chairman’s intention came after recent strong performances by the U-19 footballers who were the runners up at the AFF Nutifood U-19 Cup 2014 after losing 0-1 to Japan in the finale at My Dinh Stadium on September 13.
The youth team, also featuring some skillful players from other local clubs, played well on several other occasions as well, including the qualifying round of the 2014 AFC U-19 Championship in October last year when they secured crushing wins over Taiwan, Hong Kong, and archrivals Australia.
They excited spectators nationwide as the footballers competed well in friendly matches against under-19 players from Japan, British club Tottenham Hotspur, and Italian side AS Roma in January last year.
Most local fans expressed satisfaction even though the team lost all three games.
Many experts and supporters then highly regarded the team, saying they would make a great full-fledged squad in the near future.

London’s Wembley stadium to host climax of Euro 2020

UEFA president Michel Platini’s vision of a European Championship spread across the continent came to fruition on Friday as London’s Wembley Stadium was chosen to host the climax of Euro 2020 with 12 other cities joining the party.

People react after St. Petersburg was announced one of the 13 cities which will host matches at the Euro 2020 tournament to be played across the continent in St. Petersburg, September 19, 2014

People react after St. Petersburg was announced one of the 13 cities which will host matches at the Euro 2020 tournament to be played across the continent in St. Petersburg, September 19, 2014

The 90,000-seater Wembley, rebuilt from 2003 to 2007 and venue of the 2011 and 2013 Champions League finals, will stage both semifinals and the final of the 60th anniversary tournament dubbed a “Euro for Europe”.
It will be the first time in the competition’s history when a tournament will be hosted by more than two countries.
Wembley got the nod over Munich’s Allianz Arena, the other stadium initially bidding for semifinals and final hosting rights. Munich had to make do with being one of 12 cities awarded one of the standard packages, comprising three group matches and a knockout round tie.
The home of Bayern Munich will host a quarterfinal, along with the Baku Olympic Stadium in Azerbaijan, Rome’s Olympic Stadium and the Zenit Arena in St Petersburg, Russia.
Last 16 ties will take place in Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Bucharest, Dublin, Bilbao, Budapest, Brussels and Glasgow.
Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium along with bids from Stockholm, Skopje, Jerusalem, Sofia and Minsk were all rejected.
The vote for Wembley comes as a welcome tonic for the Football Association after its failed bids to host the 2006 and 2018 World Cup finals but FA chairman Greg Dyke denied any deal had been done with their German counterparts, the DFB.
“There is no deal,” Dyke told reporters at the ceremony in Geneva. “Other than we will not bid (to stage) Euro 2024 because it would be a waste of time because we wouldn’t get it.”
Dyke, however, hinted that England would support a German bid to host the 2024 tournament.
DFB president Wolfgang Niersbach, whose federation are believed to have pulled out from trying to host final and semifinal games with an eye on a 2024 bid, said: “I am very satisfied and happy that we could convince UEFA with our bid and have in 2020, after 32 years, European championship games again in Germany.”
England has hosted only one major tournament since the 1966 World Cup, the much-praised Euro 96, the final of which between Germany and the Czech Republic was played at the former Wembley.
“It’s nice to win one,” Dyke said. “Wembley is a great stadium and we are delighted to be hosting the finals of this tournament. Wembley has been completely rebuilt since 96 and it’s now a beautiful stadium.
“I would also like to say what a good idea this is when you sit and watch all these capital cities across Europe, what a good idea to play a tournament across all those, so congratulations to UEFA.”
“This bidding process was open to more than 50 UEFA countries so for Wembley to be ultimately recognized in this way is testament to a lot of hard work behind the scenes,” Dyke added on the FA website.
“It will be a great honor to be part of what will surely be a superb celebration of 60 years of the European Championship.”
Dublin’s inclusion in the tournament coincides with the Football Association of Ireland’s 100th anniversary.
“This one off opportunity to host part of the European finals at our home stadium will provide a major boost for Irish football and the country as a whole,” FAI chief John Delaney said in a statement.
There was relief too for Russia, given the current conflict near its border with Ukraine.
“I want to congratulate all supporters of Russian Football,” Russian Minister for Sport Vitaly Mutko said.
“Of course, there was a chance that because of the current political situation, the powers would refuse to let us host matches at Euro 2020. But we are really happy that the world of sport and politics are kept separate.”
The choice of Rome’s Olympic Stadium for a quarterfinal match, follows on from Thursday’s UEFA announcement that Milan’s San Siro would be the venue for the 2016 Champions League final.
Football Federation president Carlo Tavecchio said it showed the country is making strides after years battling problems with hooliganism and crumbling stadia.
“From a sporting perspective our intention is to consolidate the international dimension of Italian football, contribute to the renewal of our stadiums and support the growth of the football movement, in particular at grass roots level,” he said.
No French cities will be used although France is hosting the next finals in 2016.

Hosting Euro 2020 final can inspire England’s youth – Hodgson

The semi-final and tournament showpiece will be held at Wembley stadium and the Three Lions manager has urged his youngsters to make it the highlight of their careers

3
Roy Hodgson feels staging the Euro 2020 semi-finals and final at Wembley Stadium can inspire England’s youngsters to success in the tournament.

Uefa announced earlier on Friday that the national stadium will host the event for the first time since the Euro 1996 showpiece.

The likes of Raheem Sterling, Jack Wilshere, Phil Jones and Danny Welbeck will all still be under 30 years of age by the time to tournament starts, and Hodgson feels it could be the highlight of their careers.

“It is tremendous for English football that in 2020 we will be hosting the European Championship final and semi-finals,” Hodgson told the Football Association’s official website.

“It can only be positive. Particularly for the young team that is emerging. If the young players of today don’t use that as a spur then they will be making a big mistake.

“In 2020 they will be reaching the age of 27, 29. There will be hardly any of them who will be over 30.

“It must be something incredibly valuable for them to be able to look forward in their career, because their career has only just started at the top, top level.

“But they can finish it, or get close to the end of it, by playing two games at Wembley in the Euros in 2020.”

With Euro 2020 still just under six years away, Hodgson hopes the current crop can learn valuable tournament experience ahead of time.

He said: “Our main concern is the one in 2016 in France when all our players need to be 100 per cent focused, to get to France and when they get to France doing a good job.

“And if we can do that that will boost their confidence for the Russian experience in 2018. And by 2020 some of them will be playing in their fifth tournament.

“That is the type of experience you can’t buy. And we’ve seen with this German team which has won the World Cup that for many of the players it was their third or their fourth major tournament, maybe more if you count some of the Under-21 tournaments.”

The tournament, which is to be staged all across Europe for the first time, will see each of Munich, Rome, St Petersburg and Baku host one quarter-final and three group-stage games.

Hodgson added: “I’m delighted for the English FA, and it is a tribute to the marvellous work done by Greg Dyke and Alex Horne. It is a marvellous result for English football. It is everything that the English FA could have hoped for.

“We are on the back of a disappointing World Cup. We were slightly unlucky but it was a major disappointment, but I feel now there is a great deal of optimism within the squad that this could be an interesting period going forward for English football.

“I think this is a great result for England and hopefully people will celebrate it.”
