Five highlights from Becamex Binh Duong’s championship campaign

Becamex Binh Duong have claimed the 2014 V-League title despite one round still left to play, with a score of 48 points after 23 rounds. Let’s take a look back at the highlights of the team’s campaign towards their 2014 title.

Binh Duong players burst into happiness after securing the championship title.

Binh Duong players burst into happiness after securing the championship title.

1. First team to sack manager

Becamex Binh Duong was the first team to change their manager in the 2014 V-League season as they chose Nguyen Thanh Son as the new manager to replace Nguyen Minh Dung after just two rounds of play. At the same time the team invited former coach Le Thuy Hai to work as its technical director. These timely and effective adjustments paved the way for Binh Duong’s success.

2. Best defensive line

Binh Duong demonstrated the firmest defensive tactics during their 23 matches in the 2014 V-League, conceding just 22 goals and keeping a clean sheet in seven matches. In the context of the high scoring championship, Binh Duong’s excellent defence proved invaluable as they conceded just 0.05% of the total 448 goals scored after 23 games.

3. Many offensive players

Binh Duong’s 52 goals were scored by 11 different players including Anh Duc, Trong Hoang, Tan Tai, Suleiman, Huynh Kesley, Quang Vinh, Van Thanh, Moses, Abass, Tang Tuan and Tien Thanh. The newly-crowned V-League champions displayed their offensive ability by having the most players to score, while Hanoi T&T, which had the best attack line this season, had their 61 goals netted by just eight players.

4. Say no to red cards

No red cards were shown to Becamex Binh Duong as the 23rd round wrapped up last weekend. Their players received just 22 yellow cards on the way to the overall title, with none of them granted any suspension sentences since the 2014 V-League began (a player with three yellow cards receives a one-game suspension).

5. Dominant in most games

Possessing one of the most qualified line-ups at the 2014 V-League, Becamex Binh Duong were always pro-active in their matches. They controlled their games, corroded their opponent’s physical strengths and produced critical hits at the ends of each half.

Falcao scores comeback goal to sink Arsenal

LONDON: Radamel Falcao scored his first goal since a six-month injury lay-off to earn Monaco a 1-0 win over Arsenal in the Emirates Cup friendly tournament in London on Sunday (August 3).

The Colombia striker netted with a powerful first-half header to give Monaco victory in their final pre-season friendly before they open their Ligue 1 campaign at home to Lorient next Sunday.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger handed a full debut to 30 million pounds (US$50.4 million, 37.6 million euros) new signing Alexis Sanchez, but the Chilean was eclipsed by Falcao, who missed the World Cup after damaging knee ligaments in January.

“I’m very happy with his return and very satisfied that he scored a goal that gave us the win,” said Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim on Falcao, who has been strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid. Obviously I’m counting on him. In football anything is possible, especially in the transfer window, but we want to keep our best players, of course.”

Monaco’s win handed victory in the four-team tournament to Valencia, who beat Benfica 3-1 earlier in the day at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium. Arsenal tackle Manchester City in the Community Shield at Wembley next weekend, before kicking off the Premier League season at home to Crystal Palace on August 16.

“As much as our performance was sharp, creative, dynamic, and mobile yesterday, today it was static, lethargic, and not convincing at all,” said Wenger, whose side had crushed Benfica 5-1 on Saturday. “We lost because we deserved to lose. But I’m not especially concerned.”

Sanchez lined up in front of debutant Mathieu Debuchy on Arsenal’s right flank, with fellow new signing Calum Chambers again deployed at centre-back, while Falcao made his first start since his injury.

FALCAO UNMARKED

Buzzing around in bright orange boots, Sanchez almost freed Olivier Giroud with a sweeping pass from wide on the right, but while Arsenal looked bright and eager in possession, Monaco carried the greater threat. Right-back Nabil Dirar almost embarrassed Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny with a mishit right-wing cross and then teed up Falcao to head wide.

Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco twice threatened from range, drilling narrowly over from 25 yards with his right foot and then working Szczesny with his left, while Joao Moutinho also shot wide. All that Arsenal could offer by way of reply was a Chambers effort from a Santi Cazorla corner that sailed well clear of the crossbar.

Monaco made the breakthrough in the 37th minute when Falcao stole in unmarked to meet a free-kick from Moutinho with an emphatic close-range header. It was the former Atletico Madrid striker’s first goal since the day he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in a French Cup tie against amateur side Chasselay on January 22.

A half-time reshuffle saw Sanchez move up front for the second half and he played a role in a move that culminated in Monaco goalkeeper Danijel Subasic swatting away a thumping shot from Jack Wilshere. Falcao made way for Anthony Martial with around half an hour to play, while Sanchez was also withdrawn before the end.

Teenage striker Chuba Akpom took Sanchez’s place and he should have been awarded a penalty after being tripped by Subasic, but referee Martin Atkinson instead gave a free-kick on the edge of the box that Arsenal could not exploit.

In the penultimate game of the tournament earlier on Sunday, Valencia came from behind to beat Portuguese champions Benfica 3-1. New signing Derley gave Benfica an early lead, but Jose Luis Gaya equalised just before half-time and Valencia completed their comeback with goals from Pablo Piatti and Andres Guardado in the second half.

Ha Noi 1 players celebrate after beating Viet Nam Coal and Minerals 1-0 to win the National Women’s Football Championship.

Ha Noi I only needs three points over Vietnam coal and minerals to win the title. However under pressure, in the first half, Ha Noi I played slowly and created not many chances. The only real dangerous situation was Nguyen Thi Minh Nguyet’s shoot in 22nd minute toward opponents.

Coach Dang Quoc Tuan of Ha Noi I has many changes in the second half that aimed to gain total three points.

However, game was tough because of heavy rain. Until Hoan’s header Ha Noi I was revival .

With the win, Ha Noi 1 finished the championship with 23 points, four ahead of Phong Phu Ha Nam, who will play their last match against HCM City today at the same venue.

Despite losing the match, Viet Nam Coal and Minerals still hold the upper hand for a third place given that the under-performing HCM City, who are three points behind, are not likely to win today.

Besides that, Thai Nguyen won 2-1 over Ha Noi II in another game.

No Brazil ‘blacklist’ for new coach Dunga

New Brazil coach Dunga declared on Friday (August 1) that competence is all that matters to him and added that there is no “blacklist” for players who underperformed at the World Cup.

brazil-s-new-manager

New Brazil coach Dunga declared on Friday (August 1) that competence is all that matters to him and added that there is no “blacklist” for players who underperformed at the World Cup. “Competence is all that matters when it comes to choosing a national team, not friendship or marketing,” said the former midfielder, who captained Brazil to World Cup glory in 1994 and then coached the Selecao at the 2010 finals.

Dunga was brought back for a second spell at the helm as Brazil look to pick up the pieces following their traumatic World Cup campaign, which ended in a record-breaking 7-1 defeat to Germany in the semi-finals last month. That was followed by a comprehensive 3-0 defeat to the Netherlands in the third-place play-off, and coach Luiz Felipe Scolari was not kept on after his contract expired.

The manner in which Brazil bowed out of the tournament will have traumatised many of their players, but Dunga hinted that he will not now look to make sweeping changes straight away. “There is no blacklist after the World Cup. Football is like life, like work — competence is what counts,” he said. “The players are chosen not based on what we might think they are capable of doing, but on what they are achieving at the time.”

A number of Scolari’s choices — including picking misfiring strikers Fred and Jo — were heavily criticised by the Brazilian media during the World Cup.

The Selecao will play a friendly on September 5 against Colombia before facing Ecuador three days later as they start preparations for next year’s Copa America in Chile. Dunga’s squad for the matches, which will be played in Miami and at New Jersey, will be announced on August 19.

“We will have the chance to turn things around and show that what happened (at the World Cup) was a one-off,” the new coach added. “Brazil has good players. They were criticised because they did not get the results that people hoped they would.”

Nhan steps down from An Giang following violent incident

Hung Vuong An Giang FC has finally accepted the resignation of coach Nhan Thien Nhan submitted on Wednesday.

It is the third attempt by Nhan this year to step down from his post citing frustration and disappointment at the violent incident that ensued during An Giang’s last V-League match against Quang Ninh Coal in the 22nd round last week.

In spite of efforts by An Giang managers to convince him to stay, Nhan was still determined to leave, saying he was “frustrated with the system” and “not wanting to have anything to do with football for now”.

Nhan has taken full responsibility for the team’s dismal performance and said the club would fare better in the league’s two remaining games.

Coach Tran Ngoc Thai Tuan, who used to lead An Giang and the national women’s team, will take the reins in the match up against Thanh Hoa tomorrow

Ha Noi 1 top national tournament table again

Ha Noi 1 has returned to top of the standing table of the National Women’s Football Championship which had belonged to Phong Phu Ha Nam after a brilliant 5-1 victory over HCM City yesterday in round 9

1_11

The racing between Phong Phu Ha Nam and Ha Noi I is an obvious example that this year the tournament is more professional. In last round, Phong Phu Ha Nam had defeated Ha Noi I to win the first position. However in round 9, on July 29th, Ha Noi I has won 5-1 over Ho Chi Minh City at 19-8 stadium, Nha Trang – Khanh Hoa.

Nguyen Thi Muon opened for Ha Noi I in 10th minute, however the equalizing from Tran Thi Hong Linh has come in 32th minute. However Ho Chi Minh missed many chances and failed to protect their net. Finally, Ha Noi I scored four more goals.

Meanwhile Ha Noi II disappointingly lost 0-2 against Vietnam coal and minerals. Therefore Ha Noi II can’t still get any point after nine rounds.
