England captain Steven Gerrard has retired from international football following a 14-year career in representing his country.

England captain Steven Gerrard announced his retirement from international football on Monday after making 114 appearances for his country. The Football Association said in a statement on Monday that he will take on a “high-profile ambassadorial role” with its governing body.

Gerrard, 34, led the national team at the World Cup where England bowed out in the group stage and the Liverpool midfielder said he had “agonised” over the decision since returning from Brazil.

“This has been a very difficult decision, one of the toughest I’ve had to make in my career,” Gerrard told the Football Association’s FATV.

“I have enjoyed every minute of representing my country and it is a sad day for me knowing that I won’t pull on the England shirt again. To ensure I can keep playing to a high level and giving everything to Liverpool Football Club I believe this is the right decision, and having Champions League football back at Anfield is another big factor in my decision,” he added.

Gerrard, who made his international debut against Ukraine in 2000, trails just Peter Shilton (125) and David Beckham (115) on England’s all-time caps list. He appeared at three World Cup finals as well as three European championships and scored 21 goals for the Three Lions. He captained England in Brazil and at Euro 2012.

England coach Roy Hodgson paid tribute to Gerrard, saying: “While I’m disappointed in the decision, I can entirely understand Steven’s situation and can have no complaints given the incredible service he has given to his country.”

Celebrities lend fame to VN football season

One cannot help recognising the voice and looking at where it is coming from – popular actor and comedian Chi Trung appears to be putting on an act in front of the Hang Day Stadium.

Like father, like son, like football: Rocker Tran Lap and his son share a passion

Like father, like son, like football: Rocker Tran Lap and his son share a passion

That turns out to be a false impression. It is not an act. He is actually using a loudspeaker to inform the public about the match to take place, welcoming those coming in and exhorting others to watch it.

“I’m not shy when I stand in the street and call out to people to come to the stadium. I feel happy and am always smiling,” he said.

The deputy director of the Tuoi Tre (Youth) Theatre takes his new job seriously. He has volunteered to be the chairman of the Ha Noi T&T Football Fan Club because he wants to revive the love for football among residents of the capital city.

He has sent out a message saying that on the days that Ha Noi T&T are playing, he would stand Gate 10, Stand B, and arrange seats for all spectators at the stadium. No need to buy tickets, he stresses.

“I also ask the security guards to smile at the football fans and be friendly with them,” Trung said.

Apart from arranging free admission whenever possible, other things that Trung does to get as many people as possible to the stadium is issuing member cards allowing holders to buy Tuoi Tre Theatre tickets at discounted prices.

Trung has contacted 42 universities and colleges in the capital to arrange a competition for cheerleaders. Several groups of cheerleaders are expected to perform during matches played by the Ha Noi T&T.

Beside encouraging people to enjoy football matches live, Trung exhorts players to perform “spectacularly” because thousands are watching them.

“I love football and want to share my passion with other people,” he said, “I will try my best to reheat the enthusiasm of Hanoians.”

Trung said he has been passionate about football since he was a kid. He said kids like him didn’t have money to buy tickets, so they would find the lowest part of the stadium’s wall to climb so that they could watch the game.

Now, at 54, his passion has not dimmed. He still keeps his eyes on the ball and screams encouragement from the stands, leaping for joy when a goal is scored.

Good for the game

Trung visits the stadium every weekend, and feels sad when he sees the sparse audience.

“Many people say that they are bored with Vietnamese football, which has no fair play, but violence and match fixing,” he said, adding, “that’s not true for all football matches.

“I believe that when the stadium is filled with people who encourage and applaud the players, they will try their best and devote themselves to putting in their best performance.”

It was Trung’s obvious enthusiasm that prompted Do Quang Hien, president of the Ha Noi T&T, asked him to be chairman of the fan club.

“Trung loves football with all his heart. He visits Hang Day Stadium often to enjoy matches and wholeheartedly encourages the players.” Hien said.

“He’s humorous and influential, and that’s why I choose him for the position.”

The comedian is not the sole celebrity to promote football in the country because of their passion for the game.

Actor Nguyen Duc Trung, former chairman of the Viet Nam Football Supporters, said love for football should be nurtured among children.

He feels that the Viet Nam Football Federation should organise more tournaments for children based on residential areas.

“Many football talents in the world grow up from tournaments on the streets,” Trung said. “I would expect that more and more tournaments are held for disadvantaged children.

“We, the supporters, are very enthusiastic about activities supporting national football,” Trung said, “we are not fearful of any hardship.”

Trung said he and other supporters are ready to spend their own money to enjoy and encourage tournaments for children.

Rocker Tran Lap is another celebrity who’s active in supporting football. He has worked as a goodwill ambassador for the Viet Nam Football Federation and the Asian Football Confederation.

He always brings his 10-year-old son to the stadium and the little boy has inherited his father’s passion. He plays football for a club in the city and dreams of being a professional footballer when he grows us

Schweinsteiger favoured to become new Germany captain

German midfield general Bastian Schweinsteiger is favourite to become the World Cup winners’ captain after the surprise international retirement of Philipp Lahm.

germany-s-lahm-celebrates

German midfield general Bastian Schweinsteiger is favourite to become the World Cup winners’ captain after the surprise international retirement of Philipp Lahm.

Schweinsteiger became a symbol of Germany’s charge to a fourth trophy, battling on through the final victory over Argentina despite taking an elbow in the face that left blood pouring from a cut.

“Will miss you on the team, my friend! Had a great time! Thank you Philipp,” said a Twitter tribute from Schweinsteiger to his Bayern Munich team-mate after Lahm’s announcement.

Lahm is quitting international football at the age of 30 having played 113 times for his country.

Age is not on Schweinsteiger’s side. He will be 30 on August 1 and has played 108 matches. While he has struggled with injuries over the past two years, Schweinsteiger was already officially Lahm’s deputy and his leadership qualities have been widely praised.

“You don’t need to think for very long,” said Lothar Matthaus, Germany’s captain when they won the 1990 World Cup, who appeared a record 150 times for his country. “I am going on the principle that Bastian Schweinsteiger will take over the captain’s arm band. He is already vice-captain,” Matthaus told Sky Sport television.

German coach Joachim Loew has not said when he will name a new captain and is under no pressure as European Championship qualifying does not start until September. If he is looking for a younger candidate, defender Mats Hummels, 25, and striker Thomas Mueller, 24, have also become pillars of the world-beating side.

“It will not be easy to replace Philipp Lahm as a player, as a person and as captain,” said another German legend, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, current chief executive at Bayern.

Rudi Voller, Germany’s coach when Lahm made his international debut in 2004, said the Bayern defender could have kept going until the next World Cup in Russia in 2018.

Loew has concentrated on joining tributes to Lahm, who only told him of his decision at breakfast on the day after Sunday’s World Cup final.

“He is a world class player. He proved it again in recent weeks in Brazil,” said Loew in a statement released by the German Football Federation (DFB). “Philipp is a model professional who sacrifices everything for (team) success. He was always a central and very important figure to talk to, with whom we were able to discuss our ideas. He can be proud of his career. He is a fantastic player with a big heart,

lots of passion and character.”

Lahm said he had been thinking all season about retiring from the German team. Without giving anything away about his bombshell announcement, Lahm said at the World Cup he realised it would probably be his last and vowed to throw all his energy into the battle.

Lahm, one of the best defenders of his generation, said through his agent that having won the World Cup, “it’s the right time for me” to leave. He remains under contract with Bayern Munich until 2018.

On top of the World Cup, with Bayern Lahm has won five Bundesliga titles, five German Cups, the German Super Cup twice and the Champions League, European Super Cup and the Club World Cup.

DFB president Wolfgang Niersbach praised Lahm as “not only an extraordinary player but also an absolute role model.”

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed her “greatest respect” for Lahm’s achievements.

Del Bosque confirms he will remain as Spain boss

La Roja’s head coach announces that he has no intention of leaving his position despite his side’s dismal World Cup showing, promising to stay at the helm for Euro 2016

425741_heroa

Vicente del Bosque has broken his silence on his future, revealing that he intends to continue as Spain boss until Euro 2016.

La Roja endured a torrid defence of the World Cup they secured in South Africa in 2010, exiting the tournament in Brazil at the group stages after damaging 5-1 and 2-0 losses to the Netherlands and Chile respectively.

Despite the underwhelming performances that his team delivered last month, Del Bosque insists that he has no desire to step down and enjoys the continued backing of the Spanish FA.

“We can do a lot better and get back on the right lines,” the 63-year-old told reporters in Spain.

“We will try to defend our title at the next European Championship. A drastic revolution is not necessary, instead we must continue on the same path with some minor changes.”

The former Real Madrid head coach replaced Luis Aragones after Spain’s Euro 2008 win, guiding them to success in both Euro 2012 and the 2010 World Cup.

“I have been in contact with the federation during this period of reflection and they have considered that the previous six years were more important than two bad matches,” said Del Bosque, whose contract runs until 2016.

“The federation is positive and they value my work. We are feeling strong and we are going to continue with our work as before.

“We are planning the games ahead knowing that we will need to make some changes to the team as we have done in the past.”

Official: Rio Ferdinand joins QPR on one-year deal

The centre-back left Manchester United at the end of last season, ending a 12-year association with the club, and has now been reunited with his former West Ham boss Harry Redknapp

436149_heroa
Former Manchester United and England captain Rio Ferdinand has penned a one-year deal with QPR, the newly-promoted club have confirmed.

Goal reported in June that the Premier League side were closing in on the free transfer of Ferdinand following the end of his contract at Old Trafford.

Ferdinand confirmed he was to leave United in May after 12 years at the club where he made 454 appearances and won, among other honours, six Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008.

“QPR was the first professional club to ever sign me. There are great memories for me here – for my family,” he told the club’s official website.

“I spoke to Harry and [chairman] Mr [Tony] Fernandes at length. I think they both looked me in the eye and knew that I still have something to offer – that I had a genuine desire to come here and play football.

“I had a lot of offers from all over the world – some in places with a better climate than here. But the draw for me was to play in the Premier League and back here where it all started.

“It’s not about money – I had loads of more lucrative offers available to me. I still feel I’ve got something to offer and I’m excited about helping this club cement its place in the Premier League.”

Harry Redknapp worked with Ferdinand when the defender was just a youngster at West Ham, and the QPR manager is delighted to be reunited with the player.

“I really couldn’t be more pleased,” he added. “Rio’s a fantastic player and a great professional – I’m delighted we’ve been able to bring him here.

“I signed Rio as a 14-year-old. He was class on the field and off the field then, and he’s continued in that manner throughout his career.

“During his time at Manchester United, he was the best defender in Europe, if not the world.

“To bring him to QPR – when he’s still got so much to offer in terms of his quality, class, experience and know-how – is a remarkable coup for the club.”

‘Diego Lopez is going nowhere’

The Real Madrid shot stopper’s representative, Manolo Garcia-Quilon, is adamant that his client will not be leaving the club despite the imminent arrival of Keylor Navas

400277_heroa

Diego Lopez’s agent, Manolo Garcia-Quilon, has stressed that the goalkeeper has no interest in leaving Real Madrid this summer.

Los Blancos have moved to strengthen their goalkeeping department, agreeing to meet the €10 million release fee for Levante’s Keylor Navas after his impressive displays for Costa Rica in this summer’s World Cup.

Though the transfer seems to put the futures of Madrid shot-stoppers Lopez and Iker Casillas under threat, Garcia-Quilon assured reporters that there was no desire on the part of his client to play elsewhere.

“Diego is going nowhere else,” the player’s representative told Marca.

“He wants to be the main keeper at Real Madrid and he’s going to work harder than ever for that. He’s going to put all his ability at the service of the club.”

The 32-year-old, who played 36 times in La Liga last term, returned to the Bernabeu in January 2013 after leaving for Villarreal five years previously and his agent has dismissed rumours linking him with a move away again, namely to Napoli.

“Napoli haven’t even asked about him,” he added.

“He’s going to convince the coaching team here once more that he is the Real Madrid goalkeeper.”

Xabi Alonso suspended for European Super Cup

The influential midfielder will miss the game versus Sevilla after he was handed a one-game ban, while Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone was also punished

396899_heroa
Real Madrid will have to make do without the services of Xabi Alonso in the European Super Cup clash with Sevilla on August 12 in Cardiff due to suspension.

The Spain international has been handed a one-match ban by Uefa’s disciplinary committee for invading the pitch during their 4-1 Champions League final win over Atletico Madrid last season.

Alonso was forced to watch the game against Atletico from the stands due to another suspension after picking up a yellow card in the semi-final clash with Bayern Munich.

He ran onto the pitch, however, after Gareth Bale netted the 2-1 in extra-time and has now been punished for improper conduct.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has also been handed a one-game touchline ban after he was sent off by referee Bjorn Kuipers in the closing stages of the match.

Simeone ran onto the pitch after Cristiano Ronaldo struck the fourth from the spot and was then involved in a heated exchange with Real defender Raphael Varane.

Additionally, both clubs have also been fined for improper conduct of their players – due to picking up five or more yellow cards in the match – and of their fans for setting off fireworks.

Atletico must pay Uefa €21.000 while Real have been hit with an €18.000 fine.

Hoang fired after disappointing season

The V-League second division’s Ha Noi FC fired coach Truong Viet Hoang on Tuesday.

images1013945_hlv_truong_viet_hoang

Ha Noi failed to gain promotion to the V-League next season after finishing fourth with 20 points after 14 matches.

Hoang, who was on vacation with his family at the time, was surprised by the decision, but said he did not regret saying goodbye to the team.

Hoang became Ha Noi’s head coach near the end of the 2013 season when they were facing the risk of relegation.

The coach played a key role in helping Ha Noi stay up that year, but his failure this season sealed his fate.

The club has not revealed Hoang’s successor.
