Argentina break Dutch resistance on penalties

Argentina are just 90 minutes away from lifting the World Cup in the Maracana after they edged past Holland on penalties in Wednesday’s semi-finals.

451934326

After a dull, uneventful and goalless 120 minutes, the match went to a penalty shootout in Sao Paulo.

Argentina did not miss once and Sergio Romero saved from Ron Vlaar and Wesley Sneijder, meaning Alejandro Sabella’s team clinched the showdown 4-2.

Argentina will now face Germany in Sunday’s World Cup final at the Maracana – the spiritual home of their fierce rivals Brazil, who were brutally knocked out by Germany on Tuesday night.

The last time the Argentines made it through to the final in 1990, they lost to the Germans.

Germany, who battered Brazil 7-1 in Belo Horizonte, will take encouragement from watching this performance from Sabella’s side.

Lionel Messi scored one of the penalty kicks, but he was otherwise quiet and Argentina failed to impress all night.

Louis van Gaal did well to snuff out Messi during normal time, but his team were also devoid of ideas in attack.

Van Gaal will now take charge of Holland in Saturday’s third-place play-off against the hosts before flying to England to take over at Manchester United.

The Dutchman may regret deciding against bringing on Tim Krul, who saved two penalties against Costa Rica in the previous round, as Jasper Cillessen was easily beaten from 12 yards.

After a mad opening half an hour in Belo Horizonte on Tuesday, both teams started cautiously on a cold night.

Messi drilled a low free-kick right at Cillessen and Ezequiel Garay headed just over for Argentina, but nothing else of note happened in the first period.

After the break, Argentina briefly upped the tempo. Vlaar blocked Messi as he advanced towards goal and substitute Daryl Janmaat denied Gonzalo Higuain.

Nigel de Jong, a surprise starter, was struggling to keep up with the game and he came off for Jordy Klasie with 28 minutes left.

Lucas Biglia and Janmaat both needed treatment after sliding into each other in a nasty challenge that made Argentina coach Sabella wince on the touchline.

There was no inkling of a goal until the final minute of normal time when Enzo Perez dashed down the right and delivered a pinpoint low cross to Higuain, who turned the ball inches wide.

The Argentina fans who saw the net ripple thought they had finally seen a goal, but the referee awarded a goal-kick.

That proved to be Higuain’s last contribution as he was replaced by Sergio Aguero. Sabella also threw on Rodrigo Palacio to boost his attack.

A few errant tackles started flying in as the game became sloppy. Martin Demichelis, already on a booking, took out Robben but the referee kept his cards in his pocket.

All of a sudden Holland were presented with a chance to win the game.

Sneijder glanced a diagonal pass into the path of Robben, but luckily for Argentina, Mascherano came to the rescue and the game went to extra-time.

In the 98th minute Holland mustered their first shot on target, an effort from Robben that flew into Romero’s hands.

In his final substitution, Van Gaal brought Klaas-Jan Huntelaar on for Robin van Persie, meaning Krul would not be allowed on for the inevitable penalty shootout.

Cillessen jangled the nerves of the Holland fans when he performed an audacious turn to wriggle away from the advancing Aguero at the start of the second half of extra-time.

Sabella was incensed with Palacio when he tried – and failed – to head over Cillessen from 10 yards in the dying minutes of extra-time.

Dirk Kuyt fluffed a good chance at the other end and the match went to penalties.

Romero saved straight away from Vlaar. Messi, Garay and Aguero found the net while Romero saved to his right from Sneijder.

Dirk Kuyt slotted Holland’s fourth penalty away, but Maxi Rodriguez then beat Cillessen to send Argentina through to the final.

Binh Duong leap to top of V-League table

Becamex Binh Duong jumped to the top of the V-League after a 4-1 home win over Hoang Anh Gia Lai yesterday at Go Dau Stadium.

Chiến thắng trước HAGL, Bình Dương (trái) chiếm ngôi đầu bảng

Binh Duong had no difficulty dominating from the start, and opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with a penalty.

Defender Phung Van Nhien of Hoang Anh Gia Lai handballed in the box, and FIFA referee Vo Minh Tri immediately pointed to the penalty spot, from where Abass Cheikh Dieng converted the opener.

The Senegalese striker grabbed his second near the end of the first half on the counter attack.

Midfielder Le Tan Tai played a long ball to captain Nguyen Trong Hoang who controlled it with his chest before playing in Abass for an easy finish.

The score became 3-0 just two minutes after the break.

Hoang and Suleiman Abdullahi combined beautifully before the Nigerian’s shot found the back of the net.

Man of the match Hoang also got his name on the scoresheet just four minutes later with a shot to the far right corner of keeper Bassey Akpan.

Former champions Hoang Anh Gia Lai, who were without top striker Felix Ogbuke due to suspension, struggled to make an impression.

School was in session yesterday and Binh Duong midfielders Tai and Hoang were doing the teaching to young and inexperienced Nguyen Quy Suu and Tran Minh Vuong of Hoang Anh Gia Lai.

Striker Tran Duc Duong scored the only goal for the visitors in injury time to convert the visitor’s only chance of the match.

It was Hoang Anh Gia Lai’s first loss to Binh Duong at Go Dau in five seasons, and they have failed to win in six games in a row.

Binh Duong now top the table on 39 points, while Hoang Anh Gia Lai are eighth with 19 points.

The two sides will meet each other again this Saturday in the semi-final of the National Cup at Binh Duong.

Barca keep counsel over Suarez deal

Barcelona were giving little away about the prospective transfers of Luis Suarez and Alexis Sanchez as they unveiled new goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.

451547931

Barca have been in talks with Liverpool regarding Suarez, with media reports suggesting a fee in the region of £62million has been agreed for the Uruguay international, who is banned from all football related activity for four months after biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup, but is free to complete a medical in order to move clubs.

Chile winger Sanchez, meanwhile, is being heavily linked with a move away from Barca with Liverpool and their Barclays Premier League rivals Arsenal both reportedly in the hunt for the 25-year-old.

However, sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta, speaking at the presentation of Sanchez’s international colleague Bravo, remained tight-lipped about the developments surrounding both possible transfers.

He said: “We are working towards building the best squad possible before the transfer window shuts and it’s positive that people (from the club) are travelling (in order to sign players) but it’s important that we only communicate official deals.

“When we have reached one, we will announce it.”

When asked about Sanchez, Zubizarreta added: “There is nothing new to report. We will announce deals when they are done. Right now, we have two Chileans in our squad.”

The other of those two Chileans, Bravo, said that Sanchez encouraged him to move to the Catalan club, but would not reveal whether the striker said he would be his team-mate next season.

“He told me that Barca was a marvellous club and that I had to take this opportunity and enjoy it,” said Bravo.

“But we didn’t talk about being at Barcelona together, we were only focused on the World Cup.”

The 31-year-old Bravo signed from Real Sociedad last month while still playing for Chile in the World Cup, in a four-year deal that the Catalan club confirmed was worth 12million euros (£9.5m).

Bravo’s transfer followed the arrival of 22-year-old German keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen at the end of May from Borussia Monchengladbach, also for a fee believed to be in the region of 12million euros.

The club have brought in the duo to compensate for the departure of long-standing number one Victor Valdes and second-choice Jose Pinto, but the message at Bravo’s presentation from both the player and Zubizarreta was that neither new keeper would be guaranteed a place in the team when the season starts.

“For me coming here is not a risk, it’s a motivation,” said Bravo, who was the undisputed number one keeper at Real Sociedad and has 83 caps for Chile.

“I have never felt I had an advantage over anyone at any club or with Chile, quite the opposite.”

“I think it’s going to be very competitive here but that’s not just the case for the goalkeepers, every player in the squad has to compete.”

Bravo called his new team-mate Ter Stegen “a young goalkeeper with enormous quality”, and said he was not intimidated at the prospect of stepping into Valdes’ shadow.

“I’m very proud to be able to play for Barcelona,” he said.

“At Real Sociedad the name of (Luis Miguel) Arconada was very present and here so is the name of Valdes, but I feel very strong and I believe in my ability.

“It’s a tremendous challenge but I hope to be able to rise to it.”

And the Chilean insisted he would fit into Barcelona’s style of play, which he acknowledged demands that the keeper has a high level of technical ability with his feet.

“I am fortunate that Chile play in a similar way to what I will experience here,” he said.

“I will have to play as a goalkeeper and sometimes like a centre-back and play with my feet. I like that system and I feel comfortable in it. I always try to improve in every aspect and learn from my errors.”

Former Barca and Spain number one Zubizarreta said of the goalkeeping situation: “Ter Stegen knew that Bravo was coming.

“Every player knows that when they come to Barcelona they have to compete with the best players in the world.”

Real Madrid icon Alfredo Di Stefano has died at the age of 88.

The club’s honorary president was in a critical condition after suffering a heart attack in the street close to the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday, just a day after his birthday, and passed away after his health worsened dramatically on Monday morning.

Di Stefano started his career at River Plate and moved to Madrid from Colombian side Millonarios in 1953, having originally been close to joining Barcelona.

The Argentine forward defined an era at the Bernabeu, leading Madrid to eight Liga titles and five European Cups between 1953 and 1964.

The ‘Saeta Rubia’ (Blond Arrow) netted 308 times in 396 appearances for Los Blancos and remains second on the club’s list of all-time top goalscorers behind Raul (323).

Madrid confirmed the news with a statement on their official website.

“Real Madrid’s honorary president, Alfredo Di Stefano, passed away at 17:15 at the Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Maranon de Madrid,” it read.

“The president of Real Madrid, Florentino Perez, and the club’s board would like to express their deepest condolences and affection to his children, family and friends.

“The club would also like to extend those condolences to everyone who has felt sadness at the loss of the greatest player of all time.”

Perez will address the media at the Bernabeu later on Monday.

Neymar has told Brazilfans that the national team will still win the World Cup despite his injury-enforced absence.

The iconic star was stretchered off in the final moments of the Selecao’s 2-1 quarter-final win over Colombia on Friday night and has been diagnosed with a broken vertebrae, which will keep him out for four to six weeks.

“Brazilian people, players, staff, fans. This is a hard moment, and I don’t have the words to define what’s going through my head and my heart,” Neymar told the fans via CBF TV.

Krul ending to Costa Rica journey at World Cup

Holland’s substitute goalkeeper Tim Krul dramatically made two saves in a penalty shoot-out against Costa Rica to carry his side into the semi-finals of the World Cup.

Goalkeeper Tim Krul of the Netherlands celebrates with teammates

Dutch coach Louis van Gaal brought the Newcastle keeper on for Jasper Cillessen late in extra time after a goalless 120 minutes in Salvador on Saturday – and the decision paid off handsomely.

Krul denied Bryan Ruiz and Michael Umana while the Dutch converted all of their spot-kicks to set up a meeting with Argentina in the last four.

Holland had numerous chances to score before spot-kicks were required but were denied by Costa Rica keeper Keylor Navas, who had recovered from a shoulder injury to start and was named man of the match.

The Oranje also hit the woodwork three times, including in the last minute of normal time when Robin van Persie’s shot was deflected onto the crossbar by defender Yeltsin Tejeda on the goalline.

A Costa Rica side that had never reached the quarter-final stage before and had been the surprise package of the tournament suffered heartbreak but can return home with their heads held high.

A Costa Rica side that had never reached the quarter-final stage before and had been the surprise package of the tournament suffered heartbreak but can return home with their heads held high.

Holland dominated possession but could not break through Costa Rica’s well-drilled defence in the opening stages.

Los Ticos threatened in the 19th minute when Joel Campbell turned inside Bruno Martins Indi and sent in a low cross towards the box, which was cleared by Ron Vlaar with Christian Gamboa waiting at the far post.

The Oranje almost broke the deadlock in the 21st minute when Memphis Depay fed Van Persie in the left side of the box but his powerful attempt was kept out by Navas, who also saved Sneijder’s follow-up.

At the other end, Celso Borges could not get his head behind Christian Bolanos’ dangerous free-kick.

Navas was called on again to keep out Depay’s left-footed shot towards the near post and in the 38th minute, he palmed away Sneijder’s curled free-kick towards the far post.

Seconds later, Navas rushed off his line to deny Van Persie following Robben’s through-ball as the teams went to half-time with the score at 0-0.

Holland kept up the pressure after the break but Los Ticos defended deeply.

On the hour mark, Campbell demanded a penalty after being nudged in the area by Martins Indi but his appeal was waved away.

Five minutes later Giancarlo Gonzalez’s flying header from Bolanos’ free-kick went over the bar.

Costa Rica coach Jorge Luis Pinto made his first substitution one minute later with Marco Urena replacing Campbell.

With 15 minutes remaining, Vlaar headed Sneijder’s free-kick just over the bar.

Costa Rica then suffered a blow with Gamboa stretchered off and having to be replaced by David Myrie.

Holland came closer than ever when Sneijder’s free-kick hit the post with Navas beaten.

Two minutes later, there was a scramble in the Costa Rica area and the ball fell to Van Persie but his close-range effort was repelled by Navas.

Van Persie then missed a golden chance to put his team ahead when he failed to get a touch on Sneijder’s fantastic cross towards the far post.

The last chance of regulation fell again to Van Persie after Daley Blind’s cross eluded three team-mates. Tejeda, on the line, was able to divert his shot straight upwards and off the bar, with Stefan de Vrij eventually running the loose ball out of play.

Holland continued to press forward in extra time and in the 94th minute Vlaar’s header from Sneijder’s corner was saved by Navas.

Van Gaal brought on Klaas Jan Huntelaar for Martins Indi at the start of the second period of extra time.

In the 115th minute, Costa Rica earned their first corner of the match but failed to cause any danger.

Two minutes later they finally had an effort on target, with Urena’s shot saved by Cillessen.

At the other end, Holland were denied by the woodwork for the third time in the game when Sneijder’s curled attempt hit the bar.

Krul had been warming up on the sidelines and was called on in stoppage time in place of Cillessen, who was at the centre of the celebrations as his replacement’s two saves saw the Dutch through.

Borges, Gonzalez and Bolanos did manage to beat Krul but Van Persie, Robben, Sneijder and Kuyt’s successful kicks were enough for Holland.

Higuain strike sends Argentina to semis

Argentina are through to the semi-finals after the South American side hold onto their slender 1-0 lead from Gonzalo Higuain’s eighth minute strike.

451728524

Gonzalo Higuain’s excellent early strike provided the foundation for Argentina to win 1-0 and make it to the last four for the first time since Diego Maradona’s day in 1990 when they finished runners-up.

Higuain for once outshone Lionel Messi, but Maradona’s spiritual heir also provided a constant threat that kept Marc Wilmot’s Belgium side on the back foot.

Messi started off playing deep, seeing plenty of the ball and creating some good positions for his team-mates.

One such move put Ezequiel Lavezzi clear on the right and only Vincent Kompany’s alert intervention prevented a goal.

It took less than eight minutes however for Argentina to take a huge step towards the semi-final and it was Messi, twisting and turning in midfield, who was the architect.

His incisive pass to Angel di Maria was diverted to Higuain, taking a nick off a defender which caused the ball to bounce up for the Napoli striker to swivel and thump a first-time shot low into the corner from 25 yards out.

Belgium attempted to make some headway but Argentina immediately dropped back into two banks of four whenever they lost possession, and when the Red Devils did get into good positions they failed to make use of it.

Jan Vertonghen put in a stunning cross but not a single red shirt tried to reached it and Argentina cleared it unchallenged.

De Bruyne nearly surprised Sergio Romero with a shot with a short back-lift and the rebound from the save only just eluded Origi.

A dream of a pass from Messi sliced through the Belgian ranks for Di Maria but Kompany did brilliantly to get back to block him – and the Real Madrid winger injured himself while taking the shot and had to be replaced by Enzo Perez.

Messi was crudely halted when close to dribbling through a pack of red shirts on the edge of the Belgium area, and then fizzed the free-kick over the top.

Belgium’s best chance of the first half came just before the break when another Vertonghen cross this time found De Bruyne but his diving header bounced wide.

The second half was strangely muted given what was at stake, with Argentina happy to keep things tight and Belgium failing to make much impression.

Higuain cut in and drilled in a low effort that deflected off Daniel van Buyten and past the near-post with Courtois stranded, then the Lazio striker sped into the Belgium half, nutmegged Kompany while at full speed, and fairly belted a shot that smacked the top of the bar.

Marouane Fellaini, who had spent most of the match being bypassed by Messi, failed to make up for it when another Vertonghen cross picked him out, the Manchester United player heading over.

Eden Hazard was equally disappointing, his main contribution being booked for going in high on Lucas Biglia – on another day it could have been red – and he was soon replaced by Nacer Chadli.

In a mirror image of Higuain’s deflected miss, De Bruyne had a slow shot deflected just wide.

In the closing minutes Wilmots went for broke by pushing his tallest players, Fellaini and Van Buyten, up front as extra strikers and Belgium threw the kitchen sink at Argentina but the South Americans held out against the aerial bombardment, with substitute Romelu Lukaku and Axel Witsel coming closest.

There was time too for Messi to break clear and sprint in on Courtois. The world waited for the inevitable goal but Messi’s attempted finish was brilliantly blocked by the Belgium keeper even if it mattered not to the final outcome.

Vietnam to beat Myanmar 6-1in friendly

The debut game of new head Coach Toshiya Miura against Myanmar was a success when Vietnam national football team had won 6-1 over opponents. However, Myanmar was considered not strong enough rival, the debut game were therefore short of interest.

Công Vinh (9) cùng đồng đội vui mừng chiến thắng

Cong Vinh (9) to celebrate with teammates

Both Vietnam and Myanmar had seen this game as chance to test players. Vietnam meanwhile still remained main foundation with experienced pillars adding with young ones, Myanmar in the opposite they had played with a nearly total young players who were different from ones in AFF Cup two years ago.

Myanmar has recently used young players that aimed to replace the old ones. However in this game, pillars were totally eliminated. After game Coach Avramovic admitted that players let him down. Especially defenders always failed when facing one to one with Vietnamese strikers.

Many audiences thought that Myanmar brought a second squad to Vietnam because visitors seemed not have any attack toward Vietnam in this match. Till 33th minute, Vietnam had four goals from Hai Anh ( two goals) and Cong Vinh ( two goals). The game should have had more goals than that, because Myanamr defenders were two weak to  follow Vietnamese players.

In the beginning of second half, Cong Vinh scored one more goal. Then game was getting unexciting, Van Quyet’s goal set 6-0 easy win for Vietnam.
