Protests feared ahead of World Cup opener

Police in Sao Paulo fear protests may disrupt the opening match of the World Cup between hosts Brazil and Croatia at the Arena Corinthians later on Thursday.

A number of campaign groups have issued calls on social media sites for people to take part in protests ahead of the opening ceremony and first match.

The troubled build-up to the tournament means there will be a universal sigh of relief when Brazil’s captain Thiago Silva leads his team out against Croatia to finally get the World Cup under way.

All the painful preparations may be put to one side if those in the green and gold shirts of Brazil satisfy the demands of the nation.

This should be the spiritual home of football: a country which has won the World Cup no fewer than five times, that is associated with the very essence of everything the tournament should stand for, and which has not been hosts since 1950.

World Cup opening ceremonies are not the multi-million pound spectaculars that have become associated with the Olympics, but there will be more focus than ever on Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull and Brazilian pop star Claudia Leitte performing the official World Cup song ‘We Are One (Ole Ola)’.

Yet, as Football Association chairman Greg Dyke pointed out, the atmosphere in Sao Paulo has been low key.

Dyke said: “The only reason you’d know there’s a World Cup here is because half the people are on strike and you can’t get from the airport.

“I’m told there’s all sorts of politics. There is real concern about the protesters. Some people don’t want Brazil to win because they don’t want the government to get re-elected.”

Organisers struggled to deal with building delays, the abandonment of transport projects, strikes, deaths of construction workers, political rivalries and not least the widespread protests by a public who has been infuriated by the waste, inefficiencies and costs associated with this World Cup.

But it has not just been the local organising committee and Brazilian government whose laxity has contributed to a barely credible lack of excitement.

The continuing focus on FIFA’s governance, the investigation into the bids for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, and fresh allegations of corruption have all also played a part in provoking a degree of cynicism among swathes of the population in this giant country.

There have been signs of some World Cup fever building in Rio de Janeiro with fans from Argentina, Mexico, Italy and England mixing with home-grown Brazilians on Copacabana beach.

Now everyone is just waiting for the World Cup to begin.

Lahm and Muller extend Bayern deals

The Bundesliga champions have moved swiftly to tie down two of their main men for a further two seasons.

Philipp Lahm and Thomas Muller have signed two-year extensions to their contracts with Bayern Munich.

Captain Lahm is now contracted to the Bundesliga champions until June 2018, while versatile attacker Muller – whose future had been the subject of much speculation – will remain at the Allianz Arena until June 2019.

Both players came through the youth ranks at Bayern, and the club’s chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge expressed his delight at the home-grown duo’s decisions to stay put.

“Philipp Lahm and Thomas Muller are very important building blocks of FC Bayern,” Rummenigge told the club’s official website.

“Both have remained loyal to the club since the start of their careers and will play a major role in the future.

“We are very happy that both players have chosen the long term for Bayern Munich.”

Germany skipper Lahm joined Bayern at the age of 11 and is thrilled to have been given the opportunity to end his career at the club.

“Both the club and my management have decided to pursue talks since the time appeared good for a contract extension,” said the 30-year-old.

“It is definitely my last contract, I’m going to finish my career at Bayern. That was always my wish – I am very glad and happy.”

Muller had been linked with a move away from Bavaria, with incoming Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal – a former Bayern boss – reportedly keen to take him to Old Trafford.

However, the 24-year-old has now committed his future to Bayern, something that makes him “very happy”.

“There were some good discussions with the leaders of the association, who made me realise that I am in the right place here,” Muller said.

“I want to be an important part of the plans of the association. Bayern Munich has been my club since 2000, and it will remain so in the coming years.”

Lahm and Muller are away with Germany’s World Cup squad, with both seen as crucial members of coach Joachim Low’s starting XI.

AC Milan sack Seedorf and appoint Inzaghi

The Dutchman’s future has been in question for some time at San Siro and the club have decided to part ways with him and bring in the youth coach as his replacement

AC Milan have sacked coach Clarence Seedorf and hired Filippo Inzaghi as his replacement.

Dutchman Seedorf was appointed head coach of the Italian giants in January, replacing Massimiliano Allegri at San Siro.

Despite coming close to securing one of Serie A’s Europa League spots, the 38-year-old was expected to be relieved of his duties after coming under criticism from president Silvio Berlusconi and chief executive Adriano Galliani.

On Monday the club confirmed that they have parted ways with the former midfielder, who ended his playing days at Botafogo in Brazil in order to take up the role.

Milan won 11 of his 19 league games in charge – twice as many as his predecessor had managed prior to Seedorf’s arrival. He lasted less than six months in the Milan dugout.

Inzaghi, 40, has been named as the new first-team coach after a successful spell at the helm of the Under 19 team.

Via a statement on their official website, Milan revealed that the former striker and club legend has been handed a two-year deal.

“AC Milan communicates to have sacked coach Clarence Seedorf and have entrusted the first team, through June 30, 2016, to Filippo Inzaghi,” the statement read.

Inzaghi won two league championships and two Champions League titles as a Milan player between 2001-2012, scoring 126 in 300 games. He earned 57 caps for Italy, winning the World Cup in 2006.

He has no previous experience as a first-team coach.

Copacabana blocked as anti-World Cup protests reach Rio

Protests blocked the Copacabana for half-an-hour as Brazil’s ministers of culture and sport promoted this summer’s showpiece tournament in the press auditorium.

Anti-government protests overshadowed a press conference to promote Brazil’s World Cup preparations in Rio de Janeiro on Monday.

Hundreds of striking workers from the ministries of culture, education and health chanted against the government and displayed a banner reading “we don’t want the cup” outside the Copacabana Fort.

Inside the fort, the minister of culture Marta Suplicy was telling a packed auditorium that the World Cup offers Brazil a chance to project “an image beyond samba music”.

She was joined by sports minister Aldo Rebelo and a number of government and Fifa dignitaries in another embarrassing episode for tournament organisers just three days before the first game of the World Cup.

The protests spilled into the streets and blocked traffic heading along the Copacabana for at least half-an-hour.

Clashes between police and striking subway workers in São Paulo last week raised fears of a repeat of the nationwide protests that overshadowed the Confederations Cup last year.

The cost of hosting the World Cup was one of the main reasons that millions took to the streets in cities across Brazil last June to complain against poor public services and corruption.

Marco Reus ruled out of World Cup

Germany’s Marco Reus said he did not know how to find the words to express his feelings after being ruled out of the World Cup just hours before the trip to Brazil.

Germany's midfielder Marco Reus reacts injured on the pitch

The Borussia Dortmund midfielder tore ankle ligaments in Germany’s final World Cup warm-up match against Armenia on Friday night.

The German Football Association announced on Saturday morning that the 25-year-old faces a lay-off of six to seven weeks, meaning he will not be fit for the World Cup, shattering his dreams of representing his country in Brazil.

“I really don’t know how I am meant to find the words to express how I am currently feeling,” Reus wrote on his club’s website.

“A dream has ended from one second to the next. But I have got to look forwards and be very professional about my rehabilitation because life must go on.

“I will come back, even stronger than I was. My best wishes now go to the whole team and that they reach our goals without me.”

Germany coach Joachim Low expressed his compassion for the 25-year-old on Saturday after his worst fears were confirmed.

“It’s extremely regrettable both for him and for us,” he said. “Marco was in top form and he had made a fantastic impression during our training camp and in both our games against Cameroon and Armenia.

“You could just see how much he was enjoying his football. He had played a key role in our considerations for Brazil.”

Instead, Sampdoria defender Shkodran Mustafi will be boarding the plane with the rest of the Germany squad on Saturday night.

“It was not about finding a like-for-like replacement for Marco,” Low continued. “We have a great deal of quality in that position behind the forwards.

“We’ve got enough alternatives with Lukas Podolski, Andre Schurrle, Mario Gotze, Thomas Muller, Mesut Ozil, Julian Draxler and Toni Kroos.

“That is why we have chosen an extra option for the defence. Shkodran impressed us during our training camp, he’s fit and we have faith in him.

“We know we can rely on him 100 per cent.”

Reus will not require surgery but will spend the next two months receiving treatment in Dortmund in a bid to be fit for the start of the 2014/15 Bundesliga season at the end of August.

Mustafi has been capped only once, playing the full 90 minutes of Germany’s 0-0 draw against Poland last month having impressed in Serie A last season.

Sony: FIFA must probe Qatar claims

One of the World Cup’s main sponsors has urged FIFA to properly investigate allegations of corruption being involved in Qatar’s successful bid to host the 2022 tournament.

452090219

Electrical goods manufacturer Sony, which is one of six businesses listed as a FIFA ‘partner’, putting it into the highest category of World Cup backers, has stated that football’s international governing body must ensure it abides by “its principles of integrity, ethics and fair play”.

The Sunday Times has reported it has received ”hundreds of millions” of documents which it claims reveal that disgraced former FIFA executive committee member Mohamed Bin Hammam had made payments to football officials in return for votes for Qatar.

FIFA’s chief investigator Michael Garcia is assessing the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups and has said that the process will conclude by Monday. American attorney Garcia says he will submit a report in mid-July.

Qatar’s bid committee has said it “upheld the highest standard of ethics and integrity” during the bidding process for the 2022 tournament.

One week on from its initial report, the Sunday Times has published further allegations regarding Bin Hammam, including claims surrounding various business meetings.

Sony told the British newspaper: “As a FIFA partner, we expect these allegations to be investigated appropriately.

“We continue to expect FIFA to adhere to its principles of integrity, ethics and fair play across all aspects of its operations.”

Following the latest reports surrounding Qatar 2022, FIFA president Sepp Blatter said on Twitter: “Never ignoring media reports on ethics allegations in football. But let the Ethics Committee work!”

Bin Hammam was banned from football for life by FIFA in December 2012 over ”conflicts of interest” while president of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
