Vietnam face play-off match to secure World Cup passport

Viet Nam’s women’s football team will have to prepare themselves for the play-off match in order to win the continent’s fifth ticket to the Women’s World Cup next year after a 2-0 loss to Australia in the last match of Group A at Thong Nhat Stadium in HCM City.

An own goal off a shot inside the box from Emily Van Egmond and Kathryna Gorry’s goal in the second half gave the defending champions a hard-fought 2-0 win over the home team.

The loss left Viet Nam out of the last four after the team only managed to gain three points. The country beat Jordan 3-1 in the opening match but lost 4-0 and 2-0 to Japan and Australia.

The victory helped Australia claim second place in the group with seven points after three matches. They drew 2-2 with Japan in the opener, and beat Jordan 3-1 and Viet Nam 2-0 in the two next matches. Australia will take on the winners of Group B which will be decided today after the match between South Korea and China.

The win not only keeps Australia on course to defending their title, but also gives them a place in the World Cup next year in Canada.

“As I expected, it was a difficult game for us because the opponent’s organisation in defence and their determination to defend was very good today. I also wish them luck in the play-off match,” Australia’s coach, Alen Stajcic, said in the post-match press conference.

Viet Nam’s Chinese coach, Chen Yun Fa, said: “Our opponents today are the defending champions and a very strong team, but our players stuck to the game plan, defending well and waiting to pounce on the counter-attack,” he said.

“Our players lost the match today but I am happy with their spirit. I also congratulate Australia for qualifying for the World Cup,” he added.

In the other match in the group, Japan, who also beat Viet Nam 4-0 two days ago, thrashed Jordan 7-0, to take the group with seven points and a better goal difference than Australia. Japan will play the runners-up of the Group B.

On Saturday, South Korea and China also qualified for the semi-final stage, meaning they also go to Canada, after beating Thailand 4-0 and Myanmar 3-0.

Arsenal fight back for dramatic FA Cup win

Arsenal came from 2-0 down to win a dramatic FA Cup final 3-2 with a goal from Aaron Ramsey in extra-time.

Aaron Ramsey of Arsenal (R) celebrates with Mikel Arteta as he scores their third goal during the FA Cup with

Hull had ealier stunned the Gunners at a sun-baked Wembley as they went 2-0 up inside eight minutes through James Chester and captain Curtis Davies, who both capitalised on some poor defending from balls into the penalty area.

Arsenal, though, rallied and reduced the deficit through a superb 30-yard free-kick from Santi Cazorla.

After several Arsenal penalty claims, notably a pull by Tom Huddlestone on Olivier Giroud, were turned down by referee Lee Probert, the equaliser evetually came on 71 minutes when Laurent Koscielny knocked the ball into the net from a corner before being clattered by Allan McGregor.

The Hull goalkeeper saved well from Giroud as the match went into extra-time when the France forward Giroud crashed a header against the crossbar.

However, it was left to Ramsey – who left Wembley in tears as a schoolboy following defeat with Cardiff in the 2008 final against Portsmouth – to complete a remarkable turnaround when he crashed in a loose ball from the edge of the penalty box on 109 minutes which handed Arsene Wenger his first taste of success since 2005, and might just convince him to sign a new contract.

There was, though, almost more high drama as goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski – in most likely his last appearance for Arsenal – came rushing out of his goal and was beaten to a loose ball down the left by Sone Aluko.

The Hull forward looked to sweep the loose ball into an empty net, but agonisingly for the Tigers fans massed behind the goal, it rolled across the line and wide as Kieran Gibbs chased back.

Few would have predicted a flying start for Hull, but that is what arrived as the Tigers swept into the lead on four minutes.

A corner from the right by Stephen Quinn was floated out to Huddlestone – the usual corner taker.

His scuffed shot bounced into the turf through to Chester, who flicked it back into the bottom left corner just past Fabianski – again preferred to number one Wojciech Szczesny following his heroics in the semi-final shoot-out – as Arsenal had no man on the far post.

Rather than respond, the Gunners suddenly found themselves 2-0 down.

Again it was a delivery into the penalty area which caused problems, this time a ball across from Quinn out on the left.

Alex Bruce’s header was deflected onto the post by Fabianski and Davies reacted quickest to smash the ball home from a tight angle – sending the Tigers’ fans into delirium once more, with the Arsenal supporters behind Fabianski’s goal in stunned silence.

Arsenal assistant manager Steve Bould remonstrated with the assistant referee on the near touchline, claiming a foul in the build-up, but it mattered little.

It was almost 3-0 on 13 minutes when another corner was headed back towards the far corner by Bruce and as the ball looked to be dropping in, this time Gibbs knocked it off the line.

Finally, as the quarter-hour mark passed, Arsenal started to have some possession deep in the Hull half.

On 17 minutes, Cazorla was tripped some 30 yards out by Bruce.

The diminutive Spaniard elected to take the free-kick himself, which he promptly lashed into the top right corner to haul Arsenal back into the final.

Suddenly the Gunners, who won their final five Premier League matches, had renewed belief as Mesut Ozil just failed to connect with a ball through the Hull six-yard box from Lukas Podolski.

Giroud’s shot was blocked, before Podolski’s bullet follow-up effort was deflected behind.

To their credit Hull, beaten 3-0 at home by Arsenal last month, regrouped and then offered some threat of their own as the Gunners pushed for an equaliser.

Giroud robbed Quinn as he dallied on the edge of the Hull penalty area, but his cutback was hooked clear by Ahmed Elmohamady.

Arsenal continued to ask questions following the restart, with Ozil’s clever dragged cross through the six-yard box just too far ahead of Podolski.

Giroud felt he should have been given a penalty when he was tugged back by Huddlestone after getting ahead of the former Spurs man, but referee Lee Probert was not convinced.

With 30 minutes left, Wenger replaced Podolski with Yaya Sanogo, who before kick off had posted a Tweet berating Chelsea manager for his “specialist in failure” jibe.

Cazorla was the next Arsenal man to go down in the penalty area, as he turned Davies, but again the officials remained unmoved – much to the anger of Wenger, who came out of his technical area to protest.

On 72 minutes, the Gunners were level.

Sanago’s flick at the near post was blocked behind for a corner, although replays suggested goalkeeper McGregor did not get a touch.

The ball was swung into a crowded six-yard box where it cannoned off two bodies before dropping to Koscielny, who hooked it over the line before being clattered by the goalkeeper.

Aluko replaced Quinn to give Hull a much-needed impetus in attack.

Gibbs crashed the ball over the bar after it was dropped to him six yards out at the back post following strong work by Sanogo.

Cazorla looked to have been nudged over by David Meyler, but it was no surprise the referee waved play on before McGregor pushed a low angled drive from Giroud behind.

Sanogo lashed a 20-yard effort only inches wide before five minutes of stoppage time.

With neither side able to make a breakthrough, the tie went to extra-time.

Ramsey caught Davis in possession to drift over a deep cross, which Giroud looped back onto the bar.

The Wales midfielder, a loser here with Cardiff in 2008, sent an angle shot into the side netting before Cazorla chipped over.

Wenger sent on Jack Wilshere and Tomas Rosicky, replacing Ozil and Cazorla, for the final 15 minutes, and it was Arsenal who emerged victorious following and instinctive finish from Ramsey, back from a three-month injury lay-off – but not before putting their long-suffering supporters through the mill once more.

Vietnam suffers first loss in Women’s Asian Cup finals

The Vietnamese women could not build on their previous 3-1 victory over Jordan in the 2014 AFC Women’s Asian Cup knock-out stage as they lost 0-4 to defending world champions Japan in their second Group A tie on Friday, May 16.

20140518141319-1

The Vietnamese side played a solid defence throughout the whole match, which proved effective, with goalie Kieu Trinh’s net kept empty in the first 40 minutes.

Japan proved themselves as world champions by ultimately finding ways past a resilient Vietnam rearguard in the last minutes of the first half.

Midfielder Kawasumi hammered a powerful shot from the edge of the area that flew past a motionless Kieu Trinh to open the scoring for Japan.

The first-half pattern of the game continued in the second period, with Vietnam defending deep in their own zone and Japan applying continuous pressure and making the most of their chances.

Shortly after the hour mark, Japan did find a second as Kiryu fired a close-range header into Vietnam’s unguarded net.

Just five minutes later, Yuki Ogimi made it 3-0 for the reigning world champions, also from a header, and Kawasumi finished off the scoring on 86 minutes, curling in an undeniable effort into the top corner from just inside the penalty area.

With this win, Japan extended their unbeaten start to the campaign to two games, following their 2-2 draw against Australia two days before, and remain atop Group A with four points.

Australia defeated Jordan 3-1 on the same day to reach the same four-point tally, but they sit in second place due to the goal difference.

Vietnam are currently third in Group A with three points. The host team will play their last group match against Australia tomorrow at Thong Nhat Stadium.

Hosts Vietnam staged better attacks with strength and created more opportunities to score than their opponents. However, their strikers were not sharp enough to net more than three goals.

Midfielder Nguyen Thi Muon opened the scoring from a close range in the 18th minute. Kim Hong had a free kick on the right wing, sending the ball to fly low toward Muon, who blasted a shot to divert the direction of the ball into the net, let in by Jordanian goalkeeper Zina Ismail.

In the 35th minute, Maysa Ziad made her superb individual effort to level it 1-1 for Jordan after she dribbled the ball into the Vietnamese box.

The joy did not last long for Jordan when Vietnam took the 2-1 lead from a header by Thanh Huong.

In the 36th minute, Kim Hong was awarded a free kick on the left side. She shot the ball flying low toward Thanh Huong, who jumped up to head home the second goal of Vietnam in the first half of the game.

Seven minutes before the end, Thanh Huong made a long blast at a distance of around 20 meters to seal the 3-1 win for her home team.

In the other match of group A yesterday, Australia and Japan drew 2-2.

The victory means the hosts already completed half of their target to rank third in group A of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup to join the play-offs to win a ticket to the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada.

VN targets 5th place in Asia Cup

Viet Nam’s women’s football coach Chen Yun Fa said his team are well-prepared for the Asian Cup – which is also a World Cup qualifier – and ready to play a “beautiful game” against Jordan today at Thong Nhat Stadium in HCM City.

HLV Trần Văn Phát tự tin sẽ vượt qua được Jordan

In the last five matches between the two teams, Viet Nam won on four occasions and drew the other, scoring 13 goals and conceding only two.

“Viet Nam have prepared for the tournament for two months and everything is going well and I promise Viet Nam will… beat Jordan,” the Chinese coach told a pre-tournament press conference.

This is Viet Nam’s fifth Asian Cup and their best achievement so far has been sixth place in South Korea in 2002.

The country failed to progress beyond the group stage the other three times.

Despite the home advantage Chen is realistic and only aims for fifth place to ensure qualification for next year’s World Cup. Eight teams who qualified are drawn in two groups in the tournament.

Japan are the defending World Cup champions and have automatic entry, giving Asia five berths this time.

“Australia, Japan, China, and South Korea are too strong for the rest and our realistic goal is to win the continent’s fifth ticket to the World Cup,” Chen added.

Jordan too are ready for the match and look forward to a good result, albeit admitting that the group is tough.

“We are drawn in a tough group with the presence of World Cup champions Japan and Asian champions Australia, as well as the host nation,” Jordan’s Japanese coach Okiyama Masahiko said about group A.

“It will present a lot of challenges for us but our players have the spirit to go through all these challenges and we will be not leaving the tournament without status.”

Huge challenge

Australian coach Hesterine de Reus said his team face a huge challenge in defending the title they won four years ago but would play attacking football.

He admitted that other teams have improved a lot in the past four years, teams like Japan that won the World Cup and an Olympic silver medal.

“Viet Nam have improved a lot in a couple of years.”

He was also wary of teams like South Korea.

But he was optimistic nevertheless: “We will play games in a positive way and keep the title as well as qualify for the World Cup.”

Norio Sasaki, coach of world champions Japan, did not hide his ambition of winning a first Asian title, something that has eluded his team despite their resounding success in other major competitions.

“Japan come into the tournament as the No 1 in Asia, so we’re here to win the tournament. We work as a team and we hope we can do that,” he said.
