Chelsea 1-3 Atletico Madrid (Agg 1-3): Mourinho’s men outclassed in semi-final defeat

The Portuguese coach’s side got off to a fine start at Stamford Bridge, but Diego Simoene’s men showed class and control to turn the tie around to book a final against Real Madrid.

Chelsea crashed out of the Champions League after a humbling 3-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening, with Diego Simeone’s side setting up a mouth-watering final against city rivals Real Madrid in Lisbon on May 24.

The visitors came from behind to reach their first final in Europe’s premier club competition for 40 years and keep alive their hopes of a Champions League and La Liga double.

A cagey first leg of the semi-final tie last week finished goalless, but former Atletico captain Fernando Torres put Chelsea in front on Wednesday – and was emotional as his team-mates celebrated – against his boyhood club, only for Adrian Lopez to equalise just before half-time.

Atletico took that momentum into the second half and Diego Costa – a reported Chelsea target – put them in front from the penalty spot with his 36th goal of the season after substitute Samuel Eto’o brought him down in his first involvement in the game.

And Arda Turan sealed Atletico’s progress into what will be a first final – to be held on May 24 at Estadio da Luz – in the competition between two sides from the same city and ensure Jose Mourinho misses out on a showdown with his former club.

The Portuguese’s wait to become the first manager to win the famous trophy for three different clubs goes on, and he will have to hope his side win the Premier League to avoid a trophyless first season back in London.

Mourinho was able to name fit-again captain John Terry (ankle) and Eden Hazard (calf) in his starting line-up, while former Chelsea midfielder Tiago replaced the suspended Gabi and also skippered the Atletico side.

Koke’s cross-shot almost caught Mark Schwarzer out in the early exchanges, though Chelsea replied through David Luiz’s audacious overhead kick, which flew narrowly wide.

The breakthrough finally came nine minutes before half-time as Willian displayed fine close control on the right before Cesar Azpilicueta cut the ball back for the onrushing Torres and his right-foot strike found the net via a slight deflection.

Torres refused to celebrate out of respect for his former club, but Atletico were euphoric a minute before half-time when Adrian capitalised on some hesitant defending to equalise with a scuffed right-foot effort from Juanfran’s cross.

The Spanish side had the bit between their teeth early in the second half and Terry was relieved to see Schwarzer thwart Turan with a fine reflex save following some poor defending from the centre-back.

Terry was next to go close at the other end, but Thibaut Courtois’ razor-sharp reflexes denied his parent club.

Mourinho replaced Ashley Cole with Eto’o nine minutes before the break – and he must have been ruing that decision soon after when the Cameroon striker upended Costa and referee Nicola Rizzoli awarded a penalty.

Costa was booked for time wasting as he struggled to get the ball to stay on the spot, but held his nerve to fire the ball into the roof of the net as Schwarzer dived the wrong way.

There was no let-up in the action and Luiz got on the end of Willian’s inviting free-kick with a powerful header which struck the crossbar – Courtois somehow diverting the rebound over.

But any hopes of a Chelsea fightback were ended by Turan, who calmly tucked the ball into an empty net when the ball came back nicely for him after Schwarzer had tipped his powerful header against the bar 18 minutes from time.

Both Atletico and Real could enter the final as Spanish champions. Simeone’s side will be seeking a first top European crown, with their local rivals out to clinch La Decima.

Cong Vinh nominated for Southeast Asian football star team

The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) has proposed five players to play in the special match on May 11 to raise funds for victims of the storm Haiyan, including Vietnam’s top striker Le Cong Vinh.

20140425145253-1

The idea of organizing this game was initiated by the Southeast Asia Football Federation (AFF) in its latest meeting and it has received an enthusiastic response from the member states.

Under the plan, the match will take place at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia, between the national squad of Indonesia and the all-star team of Southeast Asia. The Southeast Asia all-star team will consist of players from all member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), including two from Vietnam.

On that basis, the VFF has nominated five players: striker Le Cong Vinh of Song Lam Nghe An FC, striker Nguyen Anh Duc from Binh Duong, midfielder Nguyen Van Quyet of Ha Noi T&T, midfielder Nguyen Minh Chau of Hai Phong and defender Truong Dinh Luat of Binh Duong.

The VFF chooses players based on their performance in the 2014 V-League as well as their contribution to the national team. From these nominees, the coach of the Southeast all-star team, Mr. Piyapong Pue-on of Thailand, will select two players.

Piyapong Pue-on, born in 1954, is a famous striker of Thailand. He is the only striker of Southeast Asia that played in the Korean League, and earned a good record in the jersey of the Lucky-Goldstar Hwangso FC.

In the nomination list of the VFF, Cong Vinh is the most well-known player in the region.

The selected players will gather in Jakarta on May 8 and they will have two days to prepare for the match.

The entire proceeds from the match will be donated to the victims of the storm Haiyan in the Philippines last November.

Binh Duong beat Nghe An again

Striker Abdullahi Suleiman grabbed an early brace within three minutes in the early part of a rain-sodden match at Vinh City, Nghe An, to help Binh Duong sink hosts Nghe An for a second time this week.

1_24
With the points they earned from the match, Binh Duong, who also defeated their opponent 2-1 last week, also took back the top place that they lost to Thanh Hoa after the withdrawal of Ninh Binh, who lost to Binh Duong in the first phase of the season.

Nghe An still languished in the ninth place with 13 points after drawing only one of their three latest matches.

The departure of trio defenders Hoang Van Binh, Au Van Hoan and midfielder Nguyen Trong Hoang significantly reduced the strength of Song Lam Nghe An, who desperately wanted to prove that they were still a formidable opponent.

However, Binh Duong proved yesterday that they were too strong for the hosts, who attacked right after the opening whistle. Suleiman scored two goals in the 16th and 19th minutes to give his team a commanding lead only 20 minutes into the game.

The hosts bounced back with grit but came close to reducing the gap only once in the entire first half, when defender Tran Dinh Hoang’s header hit the cross bar in the 25th minute. At the other end, Binh Duong concentrated on defence and was sharp in attacking.

The second half saw the home team enjoying more possession and attacking the visitors from all angles, from the left to the right to the centre, but they could not create any realistic goal-scoring opportunities in the face of Binh Duong’s solid defence.

While the hosts piled forwards in search of goals in vain, the visiting team sought to extend their advantage despite the inaccuracy of their strikers.

In a surprise, Hai Phong beat in-form hosts Dong Nai 1-0 at Bien Hoa city to end the home team’s winning run. English coach Dylan Kerr’s team is now in seventh place with 16 points.

On Saturday, bottom-ranked Hung Vuong An Giang finally succeeded in finding their first victory of the season with a 2-0 win over Dong Tam Long An on home soil at Long Xuyen city. Strikers Dinh Hoang Max and Felix Ajala scored for the home team.

QNK Quang Ninh inflicted a second defeat on Thanh Hoa at Cam Pha Stadium after Nigerian striker Uche Iheruome scored the only point of the match to beat the visitors 1-0.

Thanh Hoa’s second defeat in three games cast major doubt on Thanh Hoa’s ability to obtain the title this season.

SHB Da Nang beat Hoang Anh Gia Lai 5-4 in an away match at Pleiku city to climb to fifth place with 18 points.

In the last match of the round today, defending champions Ha Noi T&T will travel to Tam Ky city in the central province of Quang Nam to take on hosts Quang Nam

Liverpool 0-2 Chelsea: Ba & Willian blow title race open after Gerrard slip

A depleted Blues side earned a famous win at Anfield to end the Reds’ 11-game winning streak and breathe life into their own hopes of winning the Premier League

396232hp2

Gerrard’s slip on the stroke of half-time allowed Ba to race through unopposed on Simon Mignolet’s goal and slot the ball home to give the visitors a lead they never relinquished.

Liverpool poured forward but were repeatedly frustrated by Chelsea’s massed defensive ranks and ran out of ideas long before Willian sprinted upfield to tap a second into an empty net at the death.

Brendan Rodgers’ men are now just two points clear of Chelsea at the top of the table, while the result also provides a huge boost to third-placed Manchester City’s hopes of catching the current leaders.

Much was made before the game of Jose Mourinho’s team selection three days ahead of the second leg of Chelsea’s Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid.

The Portuguese had hinted at fielding a weakened side and decided to leave Gary Cahill and Willian on the bench, handing a Premier League debut to 20-year-old defender Tomas Kalas.

With Frank Lampard, John Obi Mikel and Nemanja Matic – all unavailable for the game with Atletico – screening the back four, Chelsea were set up with the objective of frustrating their opponents and the gameplan worked perfectly as Liverpool struggled to create any clear-cut opportunities, despite enjoying a greater share of possession.

As a result, the leaders drew a blank for the first time in 26 league games and were condemned to their maiden top-flight defeat in 2014, having last been beaten in December’s reverse meeting with Chelsea.

Ashley Cole fired an early warning shot for the visitors in the sixth minute, with a fizzing 25-yard effort that Mignolet parried away low to his left, while Philippe Coutinho volleyed into the side-netting from a tight angle at the other end.

Cole was involved again in the 14th minute, this time clearing off the line after the ball had ricocheted off Mikel, before Sakho scooped Luis Suarez’s driven ball over the crossbar from six yards out.

The hosts continued to enjoy the greater share of possession and Suarez curled an effort a yard over the bar from the edge of the box four minutes before the interval.

For all Liverpool’s dominance, they fell behind in the third minute of stoppage time at the end of the first half.

Moments after Kalas had glanced a free header wide from a corner, Gerrard’s slip allowed Ba to race clear and the Senegalese striker kept his cool to slot underneath Mignolet.

Liverpool tested Mark Schwarzer for the first time in the 59th minute, the Australian getting down low to his left to keep out Joe Allen’s first-time volley from just outside the area.

Andre Schurrle brought a similar stop out of Mignolet three minutes later, while Gerrard saw an effort from distance comfortably held by Schwarzer.

Liverpool continued to press hard for an equaliser, Schwarzer tipping Suarez’s rasping drive over the bar in stoppage time, but as the hosts pushed on they were left exposed at the back and Willian had the simple task of finding an empty net after Torres’ unselfish square ball.

Manchester United 4-0 Norwich City: Rooney & Mata hand Giggs emphatic debut win

The two stars both scored braces to hand the Welshman – appointed in the wake of David Moyes’ sacking in midweek – the perfect start to his short-term reign at Old Trafford

395829hp2

A brace apiece from Juan Mata and Wayne Rooney gave Ryan Giggs a winning start to his interim reign as Manchester United boss.

Giggs – appointed as short-term manager following David Moyes’ sacking in midweek – initially opted to leave Mata on the bench, but introduced him in the second-half, with the score already at 2-0.

And the Spaniard repaid the Welshman’s faith in him by scoring twice to add some sheen to the scoreline and to help restore the feelgood factor around Old Trafford.

Taking to the touchline in a club suit, United’s longest-serving player looked the part in a role that may only be temporary if pre-match speculation linking Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal with the Old Trafford hot-seat is to be believed.

Sir Alex Ferguson has backed Giggs to take on the job full-time, and the hosts displayed an early intensity of the kind associated with the Scot’s reign.

Much of United’s first-half work lacked penetration, but Rooney scored a penalty four minutes before half-time and then doubled his tally three minutes after the break.

Substitute Mata then struck twice to complete the scoring, leaving Old Trafford delighted and Norwich perilously placed just a point and a place above the relegation zone with two matches remaining.

The two marquee signings of the Moyes era fared badly as Giggs made six changes. Mata dropped to the bench and Marouane Fellaini did not make the matchday 18.

Giggs was afforded a predictably rapturous reception before recalled right winger Antonio Valencia was heavily involved as United sought a fast opening – although, unfortunately, the Ecuador international’s early deliveries lacked quality.

Jonny Howson had the ball in the net for Norwich after David De Gea had fumbled Ricky van Wolfswinkel’s ninth-minute header, but the Dutch striker was rightly penalised for a push on Phil Jones.

City’s first testing moment came via the United left in the 14th minute when Martin Olsson failed to clear Patrice Evra’s searching cross before Danny Welbeck reacted quickest to the loose ball, forcing John Ruddy to save smartly at his near post.

United then found themselves in the all-too-familiar position of struggling for fluency but, after Ruddy had beaten a ball from Valencia out of the goalmouth, the Old Trafford crowd was on its feet in the 41st minute as Rooney converted from the spot.

Jones’ speculative pass found its way through a crowd of Norwich defenders to Welbeck, who was clumsily fouled by Steven Whittaker, and Rooney sent Ruddy the wrong way from the resulting penalty to record a 16th league goal of the season.

Norwich were then left with a mountain to climb after the restart when Rooney was allowed to advance unchallenged towards the edge of the area. Despite losing his footing, the England forward’s shot curled beyond Ruddy and into the bottom corner.

Robert Snodgrass was Norwich’s standout attacking threat and he tested De Gea with a 58th-minute free-kick, having drawn a foul from Nemanja Vidic, but the game was over as a contest five minutes later.

Having saved impressively from Welbeck, Ruddy pushed the ball clear as Rooney sought a hat-trick, but Jones drilled the ball back into the box and Mata converted.

The Spain international then nodded his second goal after Valencia had smashed a 73rd-minute volley across the area, and Old Trafford was able to bask in an optimism rarely felt over recent months.

Substitute Johan Elmander and Bradley Johnson went close and Olsson saw a deflected drive strike the crossbar in a belated Norwich rally, but caretaker manager Neil Adams now faces the daunting prospect of games against Chelsea and Arsenal in which to salvage their top-flight status.
