Although having the advantage of playing at home, Thanh Hoa were the first to suffer a goal loss.

Striker Nguyen Hai Huy’s low header touched the ground first and went to the net after a counter-attack of the visitors at the 14th minute.

The impatient hosts immediately reshaped their line-up and went forward seeking a leveller.

A number of chances were missed as both Nghiem Xuan Tu and Nastja Ceh failed to convert them into goals.

Huy scored his double just 15 minutes later. He broke Thanh Hoa’s off-side trap, managed to bring the ball in to the box before making a drop over goalkeeper Nguyen Viet Nam’s head into the net.

Coach Mai Duc Chung expressed dissatisfaction over his players’ performance.

He forced all players to raise the level of performance, strongly resisting Quang Ninh’s domination.

Their effort brought result at the 32nd minute as Danny van Baken gave the ball to Le Duc Tuan in the box and he narrowed the score, also with a header.

It was 2-2 for the hosts just some minutes later.

Captain Ceh’s free kick touched the cross bar before coming to Tuan whose strong tap found the net.

Both sides changed their players in the second half. But only Thanh Hoa succeeded.

Substitute Le Quoc Phuong gave his teammate Le Van Tan a perfect ball to make it the third goal for the hosts at seventh minute after the break. Phuong then wasted at least three chances to score his own goal.

Quang Ninh, with 14 points, rank sixth.

In another fixture of the V-League, Binh Duong will entertain former champions

Song Lam Nghe An on their home turf at the Go Dau Stadium.

This can be called a Nghe An derby as at least four key players in Binh Duong’s line-up are originally from Nghe An.

“In my heart, Nghe An is a ‘holy land’ where I was born, grew up and Song Lam Nghe An gave me a name (known by many people) of Trong Hoang today,” said Binh Duong’s national midfielder Nguyen Trong Hoang.

“The match against my home-town team will bring a lot of emotion. But as a professional athlete, I would play professional football. I will be on the side of the team whose jersey I am wearing.”

While Binh Duong are at second place, Nghe An are struggling in the middle of the table, losing all two recent matches. They stand at seventh place with 13 points after nine games.

On Monday, Ninh Binh sent official word to the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) and the Vietnam Professional Football JSC (VPF), asking for permission to withdraw from the remaining matches at V-League 2014, pending resolution of a match-fixing scandal involving its players. However, it will not withdraw from the AFC Cup.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and VFF have made it known that they support Ninh Binh’s decision.

The AFC has expressed its profound concern over the allegations against Ninh Binh’s players. Eleven players have admitted their involvement in illegal betting. They bet on the game between their team and Kelantan FC of Malaysia in the AFC Cup on March 18.

In the latest developments, two of the 11 implicated players, Hoang Danh Ngoc and Le Van Thang, were allowed to resume training with their team on Monday to prepare for the next match in the AFC Cup against Yangon United of Myanmar, scheduled for April 22. According to police, Ngoc and Thang did not bet, but they still received money from the betting winnings. The nine remaining players are cooperating with the investigating agency.

According to Goal.com, the AFC will support Ninh Binh in the fight against match fixing and in its efforts to continue its quest for the AFC Cup.

After Ninh Binh’s withdrawal, V-League 2014 has 12 teams. The results of the matches between Ninh Binh and other teams in the V-League will be annulled.

Under the VFF’s rules, a team quitting the V-League is required to pay a VND100 million ($5,000) fine, and is downgraded to the Third Division Tournament. However, Ninh Binh’s voluntary withdrawal over the match-fixing scandal is being praised by the VFF.

This week the VFF executive board will meet to make a decision on Ninh Binh’s case.

Arsenal 3-1 West Ham: Giroud & Podolski inspire Gunners comeback

Matt Jarvis silenced the Emirates Stadium by heading the visitors in front on 40 minutes, but goals from the German and Frenchman eased the pressure on Arsene Wenger.

Lukas Podolski struck twice to help Arsenal keep up the pressure on Everton in the race for the top four with a convincing win over West Ham at the Emirates Stadium.
Matt Jarvis silenced the home crowd five minutes before half-time with a brave header from close range, but Podolski brought the Gunners level a minute before the break with a powerful low strike.

Giroud put Arsenal into the lead on 55 minutes when he expertly brought down a Thomas Vermaelen pass and fired through the legs of Adrian, and on 78 minutes Podolski lashed high into the net to seal a vital win.
The result sees Arsene Wenger’s men climb above Everton in the table by a point, though Roberto Martinez’s side have a game in hand.

The visitors, who remain seven points clear of the relegation zone, began the game with an urgency and pace as they pegged their hosts back in the opening 20 minutes.

Mohamed Diame had two chances to opening the scoring but saw his first effort blocked, and he skied a second over the crossbar from Andy Carroll’s neat cut-back.

Arsenal finally burst into life 30 minutes in as Cazorla threaded a pass through to Giroud in the penalty area, but France international’s half-hearted flick was easily saved by Adrian.

He was made to rue that finish as West Ham took the lead five minutes before the break.

Antonio Nocerino raced away from Kim Kallstrom, making his first Arsenal start, with Jarvis following in with a brave header after Wojciech Szczesny saved the Italian’s shot.

West Ham’s goal was the catalyst to set Arsenal into life and they were on level terms just four minutes later as Cazorla latched onto a poor clearance from Stewart Downing and found Podolski, who slotted home.

Ten minutes into the second half Giroud made up for his earlier miss to move Arsenal in front for the first time in the game.

Thomas Vermaelen delivered a lofted pass into the penalty area that the 27-year-old controlled superbly before firing first-time under Adrian.

Podolski and Cazorla both went close to extending the hosts’ lead just after the hour, but Adrian saved well from the German and Cazorla’s 20-yard strike was just wide of goal.

The points were sealed in the 78th minute as Podolski doubled his tally, the forward lashing his sixth league goal of the season high into the roof of the net after substitute Aaron Ramsey’s headed pass.

Wenger relieved after penalty escape

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admits he was worried what defeat to Wigan in Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final at Wembley could have done.

Arsene Wenger, manager of Arsenal talks to his players in extra time during the FA Cup Semi-Final match between Wigan Athletic and Arsenal.jpg

Stand-in goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski was the hero as his two saves helped Arsenal beat the holders 4-2 to reach their first FA Cup final since 2005.

After a bright start by Arsenal, it was Wigan who went ahead through a penalty from Jordi Gomez just after the hour.

However the Gunners made it 1-1 with seven minutes left through Per Mertesacker, whose foul had given away the spot-kick.

After Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had hit the crossbar in extra-time, it was down to penalties.

Fabianski – standing in again for regular number one Wojciech Szczesny – produced fine saves from Gary Caldwell and Jack Collison, before Santi Cazorla rolled in the winning spot-kick.

The relief was clear for all to see, as Wenger punched the air and the Arsenal players rolled around in a joyous heap on the Wembley turf, their 50,000 fans in delirium.

Earlier in the afternoon, Everton’s win over Sunderland had pushed Arsenal out of the top four of the Barclays Premier League, and Wenger – who has yet to agree a contract extension past the end of the season – was all too aware of the impact of another morale-sapping defeat.

“It is important that mentally we didn’t go out. You could imagine the consequences of going out, it is quite worrying,” the Frenchman said.

“I am relieved because there was a big pressure on us.

“I expected a difficult game and I was not disappointed.

“Wigan were impressive, well organised, physically very strong, calm when they had the ball.

“They played very well and showed why they knocked Man City out in the quarter-finals.

“We had everything a little bit against us for a while in the game. We needed to show some character, resilience and some nerves and we did it in a very united and resilient way.

“That was the most pleasing aspect because everyone expected us on that front.

“Even if we had lost, I would have said we had the mental level that I expected, and hopefully that win today will give us a lift for the end of the season.”

Wenger hailed the professionalism of Fabianski, who is set to leave the Emirates Stadium in the summer when his contract expires.

“Fabianski did very well. He is a good goalkeeper, he showed that again today,” the Arsenal manager said.

“During the game, even with the penalty they scored, he went on the right side. He is quick. In the penalties he put us in a good position.”

Wenger remains confident Arsenal can now go on to finish the campaign in style.

“If we win our games, we will finish in front (of Everton), so for us it is important now to focus on the Premier League,” he said.

“If we do that well I am confident we will come back, and on top of that we have a target now for the end of the season – the FA Cup final.

“We have now a period where we can concentrate on the Premier League.”

Wigan manager Uwe Rosler felt his team could not have given any more. He said: “We faced Arsenal – one of the top teams in the country – and did very well.

“We were only eight minutes away from winning, but we had to make some substitutions early and unfortunately we could not hold out.

“We forced Arsenal to play some long balls in the second half, which is unusual for the way they play, and we still looked to attack them when we could.

“I am absolutely proud of how they performed and what they put in.

“When you can see the finish line, but just not get over and then bounce back in extra-time, that shows mental strength and character.

“When you are then going into penalties, there is always a bit of a lottery.”

Rosler added: “I got asked ‘have you practised penalties?’ I said, ‘no, I am German, you know we dont need to practice penalties’.

“We want to be back here in May (for the play-offs), when we are back in May, then we will practice penalties.”

The Wigan boss had no issues with his side’s attitude in the shoot-out.

“There is no criticism whatsoever on Gary, I felt we selected the guys who were freshest and had confidence.

“Gary is a leader, a man and did himself justice after having not played for so many months.

“He was ready, I thought he would score. Unfortunately he didn’t. That is life, but you have to get on with it.

“Gary will recover, we will recover and move on.

“You need a bit of luck and we did not have it on our side today.”

Wigan, relegated from the top flight under former boss Roberto Martinez despite their FA Cup final success, remain very much in the hunt for promotion.

Rosler said: “I guess a lot of people will say ‘now they will never recover mentally from this’, but we will just use this now – last season at Brentford, we lost on automatic promotion in the 95th minute (of the final day) and the team recovered to go to the Wembley final.

“It is exactly that mental strength, that willpower and desire to get through the play-offs, that is definitely our target, that is what we are breathing, eating and sleeping, and I think that will happen.”
