United hold Bayern to draw at Old Trafford

Manchester United will travel to Germany with their Champions League hopes still alive after holding the much-vaunted Bayern Munich 1-1 at Old Trafford.

020413united

United held off the reigning European champions with a battling defensive display before taking the lead through Nemanja Vidic’s excellent 58th minute header.

Bayern had failed to make their possession count, but Bastian Schweinsteiger’s lethal finish for the equaliser will see the German side be strong favourites to go through.

United will at least not have to face Schweinsteiger in the second leg – the Bayern midfielder was sent off near the final whistle for a second booking after bringing down Wayne Rooney.

There have been some historic encounters between these two sides, but this match will be some way down the list.

United fans could at least be grateful that this was not a home humiliation of the sort Liverpool and Manchester City have recently inflicted on David Moyes’s team, and which given their record this season looked a distinct threat by Bayern.

The first half was a one-sided affair in favour of the Germans in terms of territory and possession. For all of that though, it was United, defending the 18-yard line in numbers and with tenacity, who managed to contrive the best chances.

Danny Welbeck promised some early joy when he rammed home a fierce strike from the edge of the box, but the whistle had already gone for dangerous play for a high foot – much to United’s fury,

That was but a brief interlude, however, in the wave after wave of Bayern attacks, orchestrated by their wing wonders Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery.

Robben curved an effort a yard past the post, then saw another 20-yard strike tipped around the post by David de Gea.

United’s passing was pedestrian to the point of embarrassing, and Old Trafford’s growing frustration with Marouane Fellaini came close to spilling over as the tall Belgian struggled with his passing and even found himself out-jumped for headers that he seemed clear favourite to win.

For all Bayern’s superiority, there was always the suspicion that Jerome Boateng was a vulnerable point of weakness to Welbeck’s pace.

The England striker had already hit another firm shot straight at Manuel Neuer before Rooney played a through-ball, Boateng stumbled and Welbeck raced in on goal. Neuer advanced and read Welbeck’s mind as he attempted the chip, leaving Rooney livid and giving his team-mate a blast of his own hair dryer.

Moyes had put his faith in the wise old head of Ryan Giggs in his starting line-up, the last survivor of the famous 1999 final triumph over Bayern and playing in his 141st Champions League match, one short of Raul’s record.

But this old head was on old legs and after a mainly-forgettable first half for the 40-year-old, Moyes made a predictable change, bringing on Shinji Kagawa in his place.

Almost immediately, United looked more threatening, with Welbeck and Rooney having greater support in attack and testing the Bayern defence. A couple of good moves saw United force a corner, which Rooney delivered with perfect pace and accuracy for Vidic to guide a wonderful header into the corner in the 58th minute.

Pep Guardiola responded by sending on Mario Mandzukic for Thomas Muller, and the change paid dividends in the 66th minute as the Croatian striker headed back Rafinha’s cross for Schweinsteiger to finish emphatically into the top corner.

Old Trafford, which had been re-energised by Vidic’s goal, was suddenly deflated and it was Bayern who finished the stronger, with Moyes’ men grateful that with two swerving efforts Robben – who broke United’s hearts at this ground in the 2010 quarter-final – could not this time find the final flourish.

Barca and Atletico play to 1-1 draw

Neymar cancelled out a stunning opening goal by Diego Ribas to ensure it ended all square between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid at the Nou Camp.

020414barcelona

Brazilian forward Ribas came on to replace Atletico’s talisman Diego Costa after half an hour and unleashed an unstoppable drive from 30 yards to put the visitors ahead 11 minutes into the second half.

But compatriot Neymar finished off a fine pass by Andres Iniesta to level the score 15 minutes later and set up the fourth successive draw in the meetings between the two teams this season as the match finished tied at 1-1.

Atletico had successfully cancelled out Barcelona until Ribas’ goal, but were clinging on by the end, relying on goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to make outstanding saves after Neymar’s equaliser, denying Iniesta and then Lionel Messi.

And Diego Simeone’s side’s desperation was underlined by the fact six of their players picked up yellow cards over the 90 minutes, while just two Barca players received cautions.

Costa was named in the starting line-up despite retiring prematurely from Atleti’s training session the previous evening, but succumbed to a hamstring injury which is almost certain to rule him out of the return leg in Madrid.

David Villa came in for the suspended Raul Garcia and had the first attempt of the night, trying his luck from 30 yards but firing well wide of the target.

The former Barca striker had a clearer opportunity just moments later, receiving the ball after Arda Turan had intercepted Pinto’s poor kick, but shot wide of the far post.

Barca had to make their first substitution of the night after just 11 minutes, Gerard Pique struggling after an aerial challenge and forced to come off for 23-year-old Marc Bartra, who shined in a rare moment in the spotlight.

Despite the early openings, the game soon took the same shape of the three cagey encounters between the two sides this season, with Barca taking until 23 minutes to test Courtois, Neymar heading softly into the Belgian’s hands.

Their next attempt was by the majestic Iniesta, played in after Messi had danced around Miranda, but Diego Godin threw out a leg to block the shot before it could get to Courtois. Then Davi Alves crossed to Messi, but the Argentinian could not get enough power on his header, and ended the night failing to get on the scoresheet for the first time in six games.

Neymar had a final go for Barca before half-time, his ambitious long ranger flying just a little high of the crossbar, while Villa tested Pinto at the other end.

The second half began like the first with little space opening up, so it required a goal out of nothing to break the deadlock. That is what Ribas produced in the 56th minute when he picked the ball up on the right hand side following a free-kick, beat Xavi then drove the ball from an impossible angle and range into the top corner.

Barca were unable to find an immediate response, resorting to Iniesta appealing for a soft penalty and the unlikely figure of Sergio Busquets shooting from outside the area, his effort patted away comfortably by Courtois. Messi then tried to head a cross from Alves towards goal but it hit his chest on its way over the bar.

Barca got their equaliser with 20 minutes remaining when Iniesta split the Atleti defence with an exquisite pass to Neymar inside the area, the Brazilian shooting into the far corner of Courtois’ net with one touch.

The goal galvanised the Nou Camp and rattled the visitors. Just a few minutes later Iniesta went looking for goal, only denied by an inspired leap across goal by Courtois, who finger tipped the ball out for a corner.

Barca had a near monopoly on possession after the equaliser, while Atletico finished the game playing with second string midfielder Cristian Rodriguez as their sole striker, a damning indictment of the thinness of Diego Simeone’s squad in comparison to Barca, who had Pedro and Alexis Sanchez on the bench.

Courtois made one final save of the night to keep out Messi’s late free-kick, and Atletico will feel relieved to return to Madrid with the tie evenly balanced, having scored a crucial goal to boot.

Guardiola hints at United offer last summer

Manchester United might have snapped up Pep Guardiola last summer had it not been for Sir Alex Ferguson’s thick Glaswegian accent.

FBL-GER-BUNDESLIGA-DORTMUND-BAYERN MUNICH

When Guardiola steps onto the Old Trafford turf on Tuesday night, many United fans will be wishing he was heading for the home dugout rather than the away one.

After winning the Champions League with Barcelona twice, Guardiola took a 12-month sabbatical before deciding to take the reins at the Allianz Arena.

Speculation was rife that Ferguson offered Guardiola the chance to succeed him at Old Trafford when the pair met for lunch in New York five months before the Scot announced his retirement.

Guardiola concedes he may have been given a chance to take the position at United, but the offer could have been lost in translation.

“He invited me to a super restaurant (in New York),” the Bayern coach said.

“It was a friendly dinner, like always. He was so gentle and we spent a very good time together.

“My English is not so good and when Sir Alex spoke quickly I didn’t understand him so maybe I didn’t understand if I received an offer or not!”

Guardiola’s humorous attempt to dodge a question regarding the meeting in December suggests the topic of Ferguson’s retirement did come up.

Guardiola has no plans to leave Munich any time soon, but when he does decide to move on, he will not be short of offers.

The Spaniard has enjoyed a stellar first season as Bayern boss, winning the Bundesliga in record time with seven matches to spare.

Bayern are unbeaten in the league and Saturday’s six-goal thriller against Hoffenheim – in which Guardiola fielded a weakened team – was only their third draw of the season.

The man in the opposite dugout could not have had a more contrasting maiden year in charge of his new side.

David Moyes’ team sit seventh in the Barclays Premier League, with almost no chance of finishing in the top four.

Guardiola is wary of the fact that United are underdogs in their own stadium, though.

“Last season Bayern won everything and this season we are over 20 points ahead of our opponents with seven matches to spare,” Guardiola said.

“But I know in the deep of my heart which team we are going to play against. Maybe they haven’t had a good season in the league but when I see (Wayne) Rooney, (Nemanja) Vidic, Rio (Ferdinand), Chicharito (Javier Hernandez) and (Danny) Welbeck, I see very good players. I don’t know why United haven’t played well in the league, but over one game or two games, they can beat us.”

With Thiago Alcantara out through injury, more pressure will fall on the shoulders of Toni Kroos.

United have been heavily linked with a move for the midfielder, who is out of contract next summer, but Guardiola and Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, say there is no chance of the 24-year-old leaving in the summer.

“Toni Kroos is sure to play in a Bayern Munich shirt next year as well,” Rummenigge told reporters before flying to Manchester on Monday morning.

Guardiola echoed those words, but could not offer any assurances that the German would stay beyond next season.

“Toni has one year more of a contract and Toni will remain,” Guardiola said.

“I hope he can extend his contract and stay with us because he is a very good guy, he loves his game, it is not just a job for him and I would like him to stay.

“I spoke with the player, with the club, I gave my opinion. After that I am not manager, I am just the trainer.”

As well as Thiago, Bayern will be without Holger Badstuber and left-back Diego Contento, who are also injured.

Flamini strike keeps City within touching distance

Manchester City missed the chance to usurp Chelsea at the top of the Barclays Premier League as Arsenal battled to a 1-1 draw at the Emirates Stadium.

Joe Hart and Yaya Toure of Manchester City look on as Mathieu Flamini of Arsenal celebrates scoring their first goal with Santi Cazorla of Arsenal .jpg

Following Chelsea’s shock 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace earlier on Saturday afternoon, Manuel Pellegrini’s men, who still have matches in hand, would have gone ahead on goal difference with victory over the out-of-form Gunners.

However, despite taking an early lead through David Silva, it was Arsenal who showed the greater desire as they recovered to turn in a strong second-half display and level through Mathieu Flamini.

Liverpool host Tottenham on Sunday and now have the championship destiny in their own hands, with key clashes against City and Chelsea at Anfield still to come.

City – who had named an unchanged XI following the rampant midweek 3-0 win at Manchester United – started brightly as full-back Pablo Zabaleta had some joy down the right before Jesus Navas curled a 20-yard effort just wide.

Arsenal, with Lukas Podolski starting after his goal in the 2-2 draw with Swansea on Tuesday night, just could not sustain any sort of possession as the visitors closed down space quickly.

However, the home supporters felt they should have been awarded a penalty on 12 minutes when Tomas Rosicky went down under a challenge from Zabaleta. There looked to be some contact, but referee Mike Dean pointed for a goal kick.

The sense of injustice galvanised Arsenal, who started to ask more questions of the City rearguard.

Man City, though, were lightning on the break and swept into the lead on 18 minutes.

Podolski was dispossessed in midfield, as Silva carried the ball forwards and to the edge of the Arsenal penalty area before feeding Edin Dzeko on the left.

His shot cannoned back off the near post, with the ball dropping at Silva’s feet and bouncing into the far corner.

Arsenal – thrashed 6-0 at Chelsea to ruin manager Arsene Wenger’s 1,000th match last weekend – needed a response to make sure they were not overrun once again in a showdown with a top-four rival.

The ball was in the City net after 21 minutes – but Arsenal midfielder Flamini had already been flagged offside from a deep left-wing cross before he looped his shot over Joe Hart.

Yaya Toure, who had a trial at Arsenal as a raw youngster, was booked on 30 minutes for tugging back Rosicky on the break.

City skipper Vincent Kompany then also saw a yellow card for body-checking Mikel Arteta.

To their credit, Arsenal were still very much in the contest as half-time approached – with Rosicky the next man cautioned for another full-blooded challenge on former Gunners full-back Gael Clichy.

Silva soon followed after he left a high boot in on Arteta as the Spaniard hacked a clearance away in the Arsenal box.

City almost doubled their lead at the start of the second half when Navas’ low cross from the right was spilled by Wojciech Szczesny, and the ball deflected off Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker but just the wrong side of the post.

Santi Cazorla’s drive stung the hands of England keeper Hart before Arsenal levelled on 53 minutes.

Patient build-up by the home side was rewarded when the ball was worked out to the left for Podolski, and his low centre into the penalty area was swept into the far corner by Flamini as he arrived on cue 12 yards out.

Arsenal suddenly found another gear, with Sagna’s cross from the right flying through the six-yard box.

Hart then somehow deflected a fierce angled drive from Podolski behind.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini made a change on 65 minutes as James Milner came on for Navas.

Following their dominant spell, Arsenal started to come under more pressure, but showed great resilience – a trait so often missing this season.

With 13 minutes left, Wenger sent on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for Podolski, before City substitute Javi Garcia replaced Nasri.

Arsenal continued to push on but City, always dangerous on the counter, were not about to throw away what could just turn out to be a crucial point in their title quest.

Rooney double helps United issue response

David Moyes ended a difficult week on a high as Manchester United cruised to an easy 4-1 win over Aston Villa.

Manchester United v Aston Villa - Premier League

An airborne protest over Old Trafford did not have any effect on the United team as a Wayne Rooney double, a goal from Juan Mata and another from Javier Hernandez lifted the pressure on Moyes.

A group of United fans had clubbed together £840 to pay for a plane to be flown over Old Trafford. The message behind it spelled out their thoughts on the United manger: ‘Wrong One – Moyes Out’, it read.

But if the fans thought it would help turn the tide of public support against Moyes then they were wrong.

The home fans inside Old Trafford booed as the plane circled overhead and Moyes’ name was sang on several occasions.

This was far from a vintage display and United are still huge outsiders for a top-four finish. But at least the margin of victory will provide Moyes and his players with some breathing space.

Ashley Westwood gave Villa an early lead but Rooney scored twice – once from the penalty spot – to ease nerves.

United turned on the style after the break. Mata bagged his first goal for the club and Hernandez wrapped up the victory in injury time.

Moyes received a warm welcome when he emerged from the tunnel and the grateful United manager showed his appreciation by waving to all four corners of the ground.

The plane emerged just after the start of the game – and in the 11th minute United were behind.

Rafael barged over Christian Benteke on the edge of the box to earn a booking and Westwood responded by sending a dipping free-kick over the wall and beyond a stretching David de Gea.

The home fans went silent. The only noise heard inside the ground game from the plane, which was still buzzing around above the stadium and the Villa fans, who proclaimed Moyes as a “football genius”.

De Gea fluffed a clearance thanks to a poor backpass from Alexander Buttner, almost allowing Benteke to double Villa’s lead.

Then Rooney took the game by the scruff of the neck, finding space in the box and getting on the end of Shinji Kagawa’s pinpoint cross to head past Brad Guzan.

The England striker would have a second soon after had it not been for a last-ditch tackle from Ciaran Clark and some impressing defending from Ron Vlaar.

United had increased the pressure on the away side, but they still lacked quality and imagination in the final third. Too often it was a case of hit and hope for Moyes men.

The game seemed destined for a half-time stalemate before Mata was brought down in the Villa box and Martin Atkinson pointed to the spot.

Rooney held his nerve to power the ball to Guzan’s left and the home crowd started to relax.

Moyes brought on Michael Carrick at half-time for Rafael. The England international slotted in at centre-back, with Phil Jones moving to right-back.

Carrick proved his worth at centre-back against West Ham last weekend and he did so again here, sticking his boot in to deny Benteke a milisecond after the Belgian completely missed the ball going for a volley.

Benteke missed another glorious chance soon after, heading over from six yards while unmarked.

The home supporters began to fear a Villa equaliser but they started to breathe easily again when Mata scored his first goal for the club.

Buttner’s header found Marouane Fellaini in the Villa box and he clumsily worked the ball to Mata off two away defenders – and the Spaniard stabbed it past Guzan.

The sense of relief was clear on Moyes’ face. He came to the edge of his technical area and clapped.

The fans again showed their support for the manager by singing the Scot’s name.

Moyes brought off Rooney with next week’s game against Bayern Munich in mind. The crowd rose to their feet and clapped the striker off.

Benteke conspired to miss yet another sitter, this time shooting wide from close range, again unmarked, before Hernandez made no such mistake in turning home fellow substitute Adnan Januzaj’s cross at the end.

Moyes was clapped off the pitch and he returned the favour, going out of his way to aim his applause towards the Stretford End after the final whistle.

Moyes aware of Januzaj burnout

David Moyes insists he has had no choice but to scale back Adnan Januzaj’s playing time in recent weeks.

Manchester United v Crystal Palace - Premier League

Januzaj was one of the few players to shine during the first half of Moyes’ debut season, but he has found himself out of the Manchester United first team of late.

The 19-year-old was an unused substitute against Olympiacos and West Ham while he did not even make the match day squad for Tuesday’s Manchester derby.

But Moyes fears he may burn the teenager out unless he gives him some rest as the midfielder has already played 29 times this season.

“Adnan has played an incredible amount of games for a 19-year-old,” the United boss said.

“We have to be mindful of that. We have seen signs in training that we have to be careful what we do with him.

“But he is a great talent. He is someone we know will go a long way at United. But we are just being careful with him. We have to do the right things and he has played a lot of football.”

Januzaj, who moved to United from Anderlecht in 2011, signed a new five-year contract at Old Trafford last October after he broke into the first team.

Pellegrini: Arsenal still in the title race

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini admits life is getting difficult for Arsenal but is not yet writing off their Barclays Premier League title bid.

Manager Arsene Wenger of Arsenal celebrates at the final whistle with Tomas Rosicky (L) and Per Mertesacker.jpg

The Gunners’ challenge has suffered considerably of late, with them being thrashed 6-0 at Chelsea on Saturday and then held to a 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium by Swansea on Tuesday.

Ahead of their home clash with City on Saturday, they are fourth in the table with 63 points from 31 games.

Their third-placed visitors are three points better off with 66 and have two games in hand over them – as well as over second-placed Liverpool, who are on 68 points, and leaders Chelsea, on 69.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has stressed he and his players have not given up on the title.

And asked on Friday if he thought City would put Arsenal out of the race if they beat them on Saturday, Pellegrini said: “It will be difficult for them of course.

“It is difficult for them because they have three teams in front of them at the top of the table. But in football, the mathematics give you a chance.

“Maybe they didn’t play well or have the results they needed in the last two matches.

“But I think that all the teams will drop points also from now until the end of the season, so I continue thinking that Arsenal have a lot of chances to fight for the title.”

On the same days as Arsenal’s meetings with Chelsea and Swansea, City trounced Fulham 5-0 at home then won 3-0 at Manchester United, and Pellegrini is keen for his side to keep up their momentum in what he regards as a vital match for their run-in.

But he certainly does not expect victory on Saturday to come easily, and has also emphasised that the fixture is not the be-all and end-all for City’s title push.

“It was a very good start to the week, and we hope we finish in the same way,” Pellegrini said.

“We must continue by trying to win the next match and continue fighting for the title.

“This is a big game because it is against a team that is fighting for the title also.

“But it is not the last match and not the match that will decide the title. It is a huge step for continuing in the way we are going so far.

“Maybe Arsenal did not have a good week but they continue being a very good team.

“They are playing at home, they have very good players and I am sure that we will need to do a very good game if we want to win.”

Pellegrini has refused to go along with talk of the trophy being City’s to lose, and when asked on Friday if he thought his players could “smell the title”, the Chilean said with a smile: “We are not thinking of smelling anything – we are just trying to win every match.

“Every game, it is the only way. All the smelling, or thinking about favourites – I don’t think it’s the best way to do things.”

Pellegrini stressed the club’s owners have not demanded that he adds the Premier League crown to the Capital One Cup he has already guided City to this season, his first in charge.

And the 60-year-old has also expressed his admiration for Wenger’s longevity as Arsenal boss.

The Chelsea match was the 1,000th game at the Gunners helm for Wenger, who was appointed in 1996, and while Pellegrini cannot realistically hope to match that stint, he is keen for an extended spell with City.

“It’s a good way of working – the best way, I think,” Pellegrini said.

“Maybe one of the most difficult things for a manager is to stay so many years at the same club. That’s why I have respect for Arsene Wenger.

“It’s a bit late for me! 17 years more? I think I will be a little bit old!

“But I’m very happy here and I will try to continue for the most amount of years that I can.”

Pellegrini confirmed City playmaker David Silva will be in the matchday squad for Saturday’s contest, despite reports having suggested the Spain international was a doubt due to a problem he sustained in the victory over United.

Sergio Aguero, meanwhile, is not yet ready to return to action after the hamstring injury he sustained against Barcelona on March 12, with Pellegrini indicating the Argentina frontman could make his comeback when City host Southampton on April 5.

Ibrahimovic having his best season – Blanc

The PSG boss has hailed his star striker’s contribution to the team this season and is confident he can keep producing in big matches.

379442_heroa

Paris Saint-Germain coach Laurent Blanc believes Zlatan Ibrahimovic is having the best season of his career.

The Swede has scored 40 goals in all competitions for his club this term as PSG look to retain their Ligue 1 title and make their mark in the Champions League.

And the former France international is confident that the former Barcelona and AC Milan can keep up his good form during the business end of the campaign.

“Zlatan is our number one goal scorer, you just have to look at the statistics to see how important he is,” Blanc told reporters.

“I hope he will continue to score in the important matches we have coming up. I don’t see any reason why that won’t be the case.

“It’s important to be able to count on such an influential player because the opposition is worried about him. He is perhaps enjoying the best season in his career.

“We haven’t won anything yet, but for the moment, everything is going well because the results are coming. But we have to keep our form up and win the upcoming matches.

“The next two months will be without doubt the most important of the season.”

PSG face a trip to Nice on Friday before a crunch Champions League quarter-final clash with Chelsea in the French capital.

Moyes treatment has been unfair, says Lambert

The Scot’s future at Old Trafford has become the subject of increasing speculation in recent weeks but his compatriot believes the criticism has been over the top.

380609_heroa

Beleaguered Manchester United boss David Moyes has been treated unfairly, according to Aston Villa counterpart Paul Lambert.

Moyes has been the target of regular criticism after failing to live up to the lofty heights set by former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ferguson led the Old Trafford outfit to 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cup crowns and two Champions League successes during a trophy-laden stint at the club that spanned more than 26 years.

United may still be in the Champions League’s last eight – where they will meet Bayern Munich over two legs – but their domestic form has been poor, and they sit a disappointing seventh in the Premier League table after a 3-0 home loss to rivals Manchester City.

Speaking ahead of Villa’s trip to Old Trafford on Saturday, Lambert expressed his belief that his fellow Scot had been hard done by, and criticised reports that the club’s fans will fly a plane with a derogatory Moyes banner over the ground during the match.

“He is trying his best for Manchester United, the way I am for Aston Villa,” Lambert told reporters.

“It comes with the territory. In the modern game, you are always one bad result away from being absolutely criticised.

“In years gone by you probably would have got a lot of time, but now the success people want is instant.

“But if you are talking about flying an aeroplane over the stadium with a message to say you are not wanted, it is a bit extreme.

“I think some of the criticism is way over the top, I really do.

“I think the magnitude of the job is huge. Only David can truly tell you about that, but from the outside looking in, it is a massive, massive job.

“It is not as if he is standing out there and thinking ‘things are not going well, but I still feel good’.

“He is human like everybody else and when you get that level of criticism it would not be nice.”
