Messi out for three weeks as Atletico hold Barca

Lionel Messi will miss the next three weeks after suffering the recurrence of a groin injury as Atletico Madrid came from behind to hold Barcelona 1-1 at the Camp Nou on Wednesday (Sep 21).

atletico-madrid.jpg.pagespeed.ce.vdvBWqLLQw

Ivan Rakitic headed Barca into the lead just before half-time, but Angel Correa slotted home on the hour mark just seconds after Messi limped off to hand Atletico a deserved point.

Earlier, Real Madrid’s record-equalling 16-game La Liga win streak came to an end as Villarreal drew 1-1 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Madrid continued to lead Barca by three points at the top of the table with Atletico a further point back in fourth. Sevilla, who beat Real Betis on Tuesday, remain in second place.

“To lose Lionel Messi means football loses and we lose,” said Barca boss Luis Enrique. “Now we have to look for other solutions. With Leo we are much stronger, but without him we are still a strong team.”

Messi is set to miss Barca’s next three games at Sporting Gijon and Celta Vigo in La Liga and Borussia Moenchengladbach in the Champions League, as well as Argentina’s World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Paraguay.

The five-time World Player of the Year missed Argentina’s last qualifier in Venezuela earlier this month due to a similar injury.

Barca’s stellar front three of Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar had struck 10 times in their last two games, but were kept largely quiet by Atletico’s typically rock-solid defence.

Messi had the first effort on goal, but his fierce effort was comfortably handled by Jan Oblak in the Atletico goal.

The hosts had to wait until four minutes before the break to seriously threaten again when they took the lead.

Atletico momentarily switched off as a corner from the left was played short to Andres Iniesta and his cross was powered home by the late arriving Rakitic.

However, Barca’s joy was short-lived, first by a double injury blow and then Correa’s leveller.

Sergio Busquets was first to limp off before Messi went down to the consternation of the Camp Nou.

The Argentine’s replacement Arda Turan had barely taken up his position when Atletico levelled as Correa coolly slotted home after Javier Mascherano’s slip offered him a clear path to goal.

Barca came closest to finding a winner in the final half hour as a fierce drive from Neymar was repelled by Oblak, whilst Jordi Alba and Rakitic fired off target. However, in the end both settled for a point which keeps them within touch of Real.

At the Bernabeu, the European champions were looking to surpass the Liga mark of 16 wins first set by Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona in 2010/11, but were made to pay for a sluggish first-half display.

“We lacked intensity in the first-half,” said Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane. “The second-half was great from everyone, but you can’t always win the three points at the end. We know we have to work hard and change things, above all how we start the game.”

Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale returned to the Madrid side that won 2-0 at Espanyol on Sunday.

However, Villarreal were the better side in the first-half and got their reward just before half-time when Sergio Ramos handled Manu Trigueros’s shot and referee Jose Luis Gonzalez pointed to the spot.

Captain Bruno Soriano stepped up and coolly chipped the ball down the middle of the goal past Casilla.

Ramos made amends right at the start of the second-half when he rose highest to head home James Rodriguez’s corner.

Ronaldo was then inches away from turning home Dani Carvajal’s low cross and Bale curled just wide as the pressure increased from Madrid. However, their frustration spilled over when Ronaldo earned a yellow card for kicking out at Bruno.

The off-colour Bale was then replaced by Lucas Vazquez, whilst Karim Benzema made way for Alvaro Morata in the search for a winner.

Morata’s header from Vazquez’s cross was brilliantly turned over by Asenjo and when Ronaldo fired straight at the Villarreal stopper in the final minute, Real’s shot at history was gone.

Spanish La Liga results:

Celta Vigo 2 Sporting Gijon 1
Real Madrid 1 Villarreal 1
Granada 1 Athletic Bilbao 2
Real Sociedad 4 Las Palmas 1
Barcelona 1 Atletico Madrid 1

Forgery claims hit AC Milan takeover bid

A Chinese consortium looking to purchase AC Milan has been accused of providing false documents during its initial negotiations with the Serie A giants, according to reports on Wednesday (Sep 21).

ac-milan-afp

Sino-Europe Sports Investment Management Changxing Co, led by businessman Li Yonghong, has already paid €100 million to Fininvest, the holding company of AC Milan owner and president Silvio Berlusconi, who is expected to sign off on the €740 million deal by the end of the year.

But a report by the Bloomberg financial news site, which cites a statement from the Chinese lender whose name appears on the documents, alleges that false documents were used in the initial negotiations.

The report claims Sino-Europe Sports provided documents on “what appears to be Bank of Jiangsu Co. stationery, purporting to show transaction details of a consortium member’s corporate account”.

It added that “after reviewing the matter, Bank of Jiangsu found it hadn’t issued any such document detailing the account’s transactions”.

In a statement to AFP on Wednesday, Fininvest said it would “not confirm” that it had received the documents in question, adding: “and we do not intend to comment on the affair.”

The Bloomberg report claims, however, that: “Fininvest checked the soundness of the buyers through contacts with Chinese financial institutions, and it continues to work to finalize the deal by the end of the year.”

The claims, reported widely in the Italian media, have cast a shadow over a deal that could see Milan, one of the world’s legendary football clubs, following in the footsteps of city rivals Inter Milan in being sold to Chinese investors.

Inter, Italy’s last Champions League winners, in 2010, are now owned by the Chinese group Suning, who bought a majority stake in the club several months ago from Indonesian Erick Thohir.

AC Milan already pulled out of one deal with Chinese investors last year, and recently the new bid was hit by doubts.

Sino-Europe Sports issued a statement last week to quash claims it was struggling to gather the necessary funds for a successful takeover.

“Sino-Europe Sports confirms that everything is progressing rapidly towards the closing for the acquisition of Milan,” the statement said.

“Yesterday [on Friday] David Han took part in a series of planned meetings with his advisers and Fininvest. All the parties are working to close the deal in the planned timescale.”

According to preliminary negotiations between the parties, the deal is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.

Vietnam lose to Russia in Futsal World Cup knock-out stage

Vietnam’s national futsal team were defeated 7-0 by Russia in the round of 16 at the FIFA Futsal World Cup in Medellin, Colombia, on September 21.

Tuyển Nga không khó khi danh chiến thắng trước tuyển Việt Nam
World No.3 Russia dominated the match, scoring four goals in the first half.

In the second half, while Vietnam did create occasional opportunities, Russia secured a routine win with three more goals.

Vietnam’s futsal national team made history by reaching the knockout stage of the FIFA Futsal World Cup in its first appearance at the event in Colombia.

They secured the berth as one of the best third-placed teams after finishing Group C with one win and two losses.

They beat Guatemala 4-2 in the opening match but lost the next two matches against Paraguay and Italy.

The national team rank 39th in the world

Bacca and Niang send AC Milan up to third

Carlos Bacca scored for the second game in a row and M’Baye Niang netted from the penalty spot in a disjointed performance as AC Milan beat Lazio 2-0 at the San Siro on Tuesday.

ac.jpg.pagespeed.ce.t508WfuK6m

Bacca struck eight minutes before half-time having notched the late match-winner in Friday night’s 1-0 success at Sampdoria.

Niang sealed the win after earning and then slotting away a spot-kick on an evening in which his performance swung between the sublime and ridiculous.

The victory, a third in five games this season, provisionally moved Milan up to third ahead of the rest of the mid-week programme.

Lazio were off to a positive start with Milan’s teenage goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma forced into a couple of early saves from Filip Djordjevic and Marco Parolo, while Danilo Cataldi was off target for the visitors in an enterprising first 10 minutes.

Donnarumma’s best save then came from a Sergej Milinkovic-Savic header on 12 minutes.

But from there the hosts started to take control, with French forward Niang looking lively, having a shot saved by goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha before turning his marker only to fail to look up and pick out a team-mate with a cross-shot that Albanian Strakosha dealt with comfortably.

Milan took the lead out of the blue as Bacca ran from the halfway line onto a Juraj Kucka through ball when Lazio’s high backline was caught out by a mistake from Parolo.

The Colombian Bacca, who was restored to the starting line-up after coming off the bench against Sampdoria, took his time and picked his spot to find the bottom corner on 37 minutes.

Suddenly Lazio, who had been the better side until then, were on the ropes.

Strakosha saved well from Giacomo Bonaventura but moments later was almost embarrassed by the same player as he let a tame shot slip through his grasp before spinning around to clasp the ball as it bounced towards the line.

In first-half injury time Lazio were lucky to survive as the ball pinged around in their box, Strakosha unknowingly preventing an own goal with his head before Dusan Basta cleared another Bonaventura shot off the line.

From the resulting corner Kucka climbed above Strakosha to head home but he was harshly adjudged to have fouled the keeper.

Niang should have killed the game on 56 minutes but teed up with an open goal by Bacca he somehow barely made contact with the ball and Lazio breathed a sigh of relief.

Less than 60 seconds later only a last-ditch tackle by Gabriel Paletta prevented Lazio substitute Keita Balde Diao from making Niang and Milan pay.

The 21-year-old French youth international Niang then sent a woeful shot out for a throw-in.

But he gave a glimpse of his undoubted potential by shrugging off a marker before stinging Strakosha’s fingers with a venemous shot from distance.

And Niang won and then converted a penalty as Stefan Radu was penalised for handling the striker’s cross.

The maverick forward still had time to slice a dreadful effort off target as he remained centre stage right to the end.

Fabregas downs Leicester, Everton crash out

Cesc Fabregas made an emphatic point to Chelsea manager Antonio Conte as his double sealed a 4-2 win at Leicester, while Everton and Bournemouth suffered shock third-round exits from the English Football League Cup on Tuesday.

liverpool

Fabregas has been limited to three substitute appearances in the Premier League since Conte took charge over the summer, but the Spain midfielder proved he can still be a game-changer with an influential display capped by the decisive two goals in extra-time.

Elsewhere, second-tier Norwich spoiled Everton’s impressive start to the season and inflicted Ronald Koeman’s first defeat as Toffees boss with a 2-0 win at Goodison Park.

Bournemouth were the other top-flight casualties as second-tier Preston won 3-2 thanks to a hat-trick from Denmark striker Simon Makienok.

At the King Power Stadium, Shinji Okazaki put Premier League champions Leicester ahead in the 17th minute when the Japan striker punished terrible Chelsea defending to head home from close range.

Okazaki followed his first goal since March with a second in the 34th minute as the 30-year-old’s strike into the turf bounced over Chelsea goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

Gary Cahill reduced the deficit on the stroke of half-time, the defender heading home after being left unmarked at the far post from a Fabregas corner.

The Blues equalised four minutes after the interval through Cesar Azpilicueta’s blistering long-range effort.

Leicester had to play extra-time with 10 men after Marcin Wasilewski’s 89th minute dismissal for elbowing Diego Costa and Fabregas made them pay, finishing a flowing move in the 92nd minute and drilling home again two minutes later.

Everton are second in the Premier League but Koeman made six changes and his stand-ins were brushed aside by promotion-chasing Norwich.

The Canaries went ahead when former Everton striker Steven Naismith slipped as he went to shoot and inadvertently lobbed the ball into the net.

Josh Murphy’s superb strike from the edge of the area in the 74th minute completed the upset.

“I can’t criticise the players. We played well but weren’t clinical enough. The difference was Norwich were clinical with their two chances,” Koeman said.

UNSTOPPABLE

At Dean Court, Makienok, who hadn’t scored in his previous 19 appearances, gave Preston the lead in the 10th minute before Bournemouth equalised through Lewis Grabban’s 53rd minute penalty.

Dan Gosling put the hosts ahead from close range in the 76th minute, only for Makienok to force extra-time in the 85th minute and then win it for Simon Grayson’s men in the 111th minute.

Lucas Perez’s first goals for Arsenal inspired a 4-0 rout of second-tier Nottingham Forest at the city Ground.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, who has never won the League Cup, made 11 changes from the team that thrashed Hull on Saturday and the understudies went ahead in the 23rd minute through a long-range effort from Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka.

Spanish striker Perez, who arrived from Deportivo La Coruna on transfer-deadline day, opened his Arsenal account in his third appearance with a 60th-minute penalty after a foul on Chuba Akpom.

Perez got his second in the 71st minute and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain got Arsenal’s fourth in stoppage time.

Liverpool, last year’s beaten finalists, remain on course for a return to Wembley after a 3-0 win against Championship side Derby at the iPro Stadium.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp made seven changes, including a debut for goalkeeper Loris Karius, but his team were still unstoppable as they took their goal tally to 19 in seven matches this season.

Estonia centre-back Ragnar Klavan took advantage of poor Derby defending to fire home in the 24th minute.

Philippe Coutinho doubled Liverpool’s lead in the 50th minute and Divock Origi put the result beyond doubt four minutes later.

Newcastle defeated Championship rivals Wolves 2-0, Leeds beat fellow second-tier side Blackburn 1-0, while Reading won 2-1 in another all-Championship clash at Brighton.

Third round:

Bournemouth 2 Preston 3 (after extra time)
Brighton 1 Reading 2
Derby 0 Liverpool 3
Everton 0 Norwich 2
Leeds 1 Blackburn 0
Leicester 2 Chelsea 4 (after extra time)
Newcastle 2 Wolves 0
Nottingham Forest 0 Arsenal 4

Ten-man PSG slump to second league defeat of season

Paris St Germain suffered their second defeat of the Ligue 1 season when they lost 2-0 at Toulouse after being reduced to 10 men on Friday.

psg

The champions succumbed to second-half goals by Yann Bodiger and Jimmy Durmaz as they dropped to third in the table with 13 points from seven games.

Toulouse are now second on 14 points, trailing Nice on goal difference before the leaders travel to Nancy on Sunday.

PSG, without Hatem Ben Arfa after the forward was omitted from the squad for the fourth match in a row by coach Unai Emery, were nervy after having Serge Aurier sent off in the 46th minute.

The visitors made a cautious start to the game but soon upped the pace and went close three times before the break.

Keeper Alban Lafont denied Edinson Cavani from point-blank range with a superb save on the half-hour.

Cavani then connected with Maxwell’s 41st-minute cross following a sweeping move but Lafont parried the Uruguayan’s header.

Three minutes later Aurier’s header was cleared from just under the bar by defender Christopher Jullien.

Toulouse were the stronger team at the beginning of the second half and Bodiger converted a penalty in the 48th minute after Aurier fouled Ola Toivonen and picked up his second yellow card.

PSG forward Javier Pastore went on for Brazilian Lucas in the 57th minute but made little impact.

Durmaz put the result beyond doubt 11 minutes from time by beating keeper Alphonse Areola from close range after intercepting a poor Thiago Motta pass.

Monaco, handed their first defeat by Nice on Wednesday, can go top by beating Angers on Saturday.

Russia is more highly ranked than Vietnam, therefore the next game will be really tough. with fairly same playing stactic with Italia and 4 Brazilian players in squad their strength is also pressing.

Thus, Vietnam have to concentrate much on playing strategies. a draw is what we need to hold till the last minutes of game.

Vietnam down Australia in AFC U-16 championship

Vietnam continued to keep their hopes for the knockout stage of the 2016 AFC U-16 Championship alive after registering a spectacular 3-2 victory over Australia in their second Group B match at India’s GMC Stadium on September 19.

U16 Việt Nam ngược dòng ấn tượng đánh bại U16 Australia

Vietnam suffered a heavy 0-7 loss to Japan in their September 16 opener, which made a win against Australia a must for them to retain their bid for a place in the next round.

On the opposite side, Australia were also determined to secure the full three points against Vietnam following their opening 0-1 defeat to Kyrgyzstan.

Australia turned up the pressure from the first whistle and quickly progressed, thanks to Roberts’ header in the 19th minute.

As Vietnam were seeking ways to equalise the score, Duy Khiem made a serious defensive mistake in the 28th minute, allowing Roberts to net a second goal for Australia.

After the break, Vietnam increased their attacks with a “nothing to lose” spirit and successfully overwhelmed the Australian side.

Their efforts paid off in the 55th minute as Huu Thang pulled back a goal for his team with a beautiful strike.

Thang’s goal boosted his teammates’ confidence, enabling them to tie up the score six minutes later with Huu Thang beating goalkeeper Suman, who had blocked Van Dat’s powerful shot shortly earlier.

Duy Khiem rounded off a tense 3-2 win for Vietnam, taking advantage of a mistake on the part of the Australian side to seal a third goal in the 86th minute.

With this result, Vietnam climbed to second place in Group B with three points, three points behind leaders Japan and ahead of Kyrgyzstan thanks to a better goal difference.

Vietnam only need a draw with Kyrgyzstan on September 22 to officially book a place in the knockout stage as Group B runners-up.
