Five-star Jeonbuk storm into Asian semis

Double strikes from Leonardo and Lee Dong-Gook catapulted Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors to a 5-0 victory over Sven-Goran Eriksson’s Shanghai SIPG as they stormed into the AFC Champions League semi-finals on Tuesday.

The 2006 champions were held for 52 minutes in the quarter-final second leg in Jeonju before Leonardo’s well-taken goal blew the floodgates open.

Shi Ke’s own goal doubled Jeonbuk’s lead before Leonardo scored again from the spot and veteran striker Lee came on for a sublime cameo with goals in the 84th and 88th minutes.

The emphatic result makes a statement for Korean football at a time when China’s mega-rich clubs are hogging the Asian limelight and attracting a steady flow of top players.

FC Seoul are also well-placed against Chinese opposition as they take a 3-1 lead into the second leg of their quarter-final against Shandong Luneng on Wednesday.

For SIPG’s former England manager Eriksson, it was a night to forget as Brazilian new signing Hulk failed to make headway against the efficient Jeonbuk defence.

Jeonbuk laid seige to the SIPG goal in the first half without creating much in the way of clear-cut chances, for all their dominance.

Tall forward Kim Shin-Wook, sporting a blond mohican, had the ball in the net in the sixth minute but it was chalked off for a foul on goalkeeper Yan Junling.

And the busy Yan did brilliantly to deny Kim Bo-Kyung on 25 minutes when he dived low to push his rasping shot around the post.

Jeonbuk’s relentless pressure finally told seven minutes into the second half but it took a well-worked move to finally break SIPG’s resistance.

Kim cushion-volleyed a lay-off to Leonardo on the edge of the box and the Brazilian made no mistake as he arrowed his shot past goalkeeper Yan.

Wu Lei then had a great chance to level matters against the run of play, and he came to rue his tame shot when Jeonbuk grabbed their second on 58 minutes.

Lee Jae-Sung’s cut-back was inviting but it was SIPG’s Shi Ke who inadvertently bundled it into his own net as he rushed back to cover.

Worse was to come when Lu Wenjun was sent off for kicking Kim Hyung-Il in the head as he tried to clear off his own goal line.

And SIPG’s evening deteriorated still further when Jeonbuk added three more goals to their tally in a dizzying final eight minutes.

Leonardo scored from the spot after substitute Lee Jong-Ho was fouled in the box, before Lee Dong-Gook, introduced on 63 minutes, twice finished sharply to round off a miserable night for Eriksson’s team.

Morata hits injury-time winner to earn Real comeback win

Late strikes from Cristiano Ronaldo and Alvaro Morata gave Real Madrid a last-gasp 2-1 win over Sporting Lisbon as the European champions came from behind to win the first game of their Champions League defence.

aqIWo453
Ronaldo denied his Portuguese boyhood club a famous win by scoring an equaliser from a free-kick in the 89th minute just when it seemed Madrid could, sensationally, lose their opening game in Group F.
Morata then headed home deep in injury time to complete the fightback.
“We didn’t start the game well but Real Madrid are famous for comebacks like these and we leave here very happy,” said Morata.
“We always believed in ourselves and we proved that you can always win a game until the referee blows the final whistle. Football is not always fair but it was fundamental to win and that’s what we’ve done.”
Brazilian Bruno Cesar had earlier given the visitors a surprise yet deserved lead in the 47th minute as he pounced on indecision in the Real back line.
Real took their time to respond to going behind with Ronaldo missing a gilt-edged chance to level when he struck the near post from a couple of yards out.
Real had gone into the game on top of La Liga after a convincing 5-2 win over Osasuna but met a well-drilled Sporting side who flooded the midfield with bodies and frequently won possession back, launching quick and dangerous breaks.
The first of these breakaways came early in the game and led to Cesar trying his luck from the edge of the area, firing narrowly wide of Kiko Casilla’s right-hand post.
Real struggled to find solutions to Sporting’s strategy and were limited to shots from distance, like one stinging effort from Ronaldo which Rui Patricio tipped over the bar.
Gareth Bale had looked Real’s liveliest player in the first half but was on the wrong end of a painful challenge from Sebastian Coates, who kneed the Wales international in the midrift.
Bale was taken off in the second period along with Karim Benzema, who looked far from peak fitness.
Zidane’s double substitution had a tangible impact on the game, however, with Lucas Vazquez giving Real extra energy while Morata added extra power in the area.
And it was the local striker’s tenacity that won the points at the death as he leapt to head James Rodriguez’s cross home.

Wenger eyes hot start to Champions League campaign

Arsene Wenger is looking for Arsenal to show greater consistency in the Champions League, starting with a positive result when they begin their campaign at Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday (Sep 13).

arsenal.jpg.pagespeed.ce.9aZqPnNy-N

A year ago the Gunners lost their opening two group games before scraping through to the last 16 behind Bayern Munich, only to fall at that stage for the sixth year running.

The key to returning to the latter stages is winning Group A to thereby set up an easier draw in the first knockout round, and so taking points off the French champions at the Parc des Princes could be crucial.

“Last year we had a bad start because we lost our first game at Dinamo Zagreb and after we had the hiccup at home against Olympiakos and Bayern was a bit more consistent,” Wenger said at a press conference on Monday.

“What we need to do to win the group is make a good result here tomorrow.”

The last time Arsenal won their Champions League group was in 2011/12, when they finished ahead of another French side in Marseille.

With Basel and Ludogorets Razgrad completing the Group A line-up, the Gunners and the French champions are expected to be fighting it out for first place.

While Wenger’s side are fresh from back-to-back Premier League wins against Watford and Southampton, PSG have been in poor form under their new coach Unai Emery.

They followed a 3-1 defeat at Monaco before the recent international break by drawing 1-1 at home to Saint-Etienne on Friday, but Wenger remains wary of them.

“They are a bit like us with a number of players who came back a bit late (from summer holidays), so they have had to an extent the same problems as us,” Wenger said.

“They were in the same hotel as us in Los Angeles when Thiago Silva got injured and he has still not come back, but I am not too worried for them because they have been well above the rest of the teams in their league in recent years and I expect to see a different PSG in the Champions League.”

SLOW START

PSG’s fourth consecutive elimination in the quarter-finals of this competition, to Manchester City, ultimately led to Laurent Blanc being sacked in the summer, with Emery replacing him.

But pressure is already building on the Spaniard after their slow start to the Ligue 1 campaign.

“I have come here with my experience and with a lot of demands. The demand on me is to win and that is no different to when I started out in Spain 12 years ago,” said Emery.

The 44-year-old won the Europa League with Sevilla in each of the last three seasons but has no real track record in the Champions League.

“I accept my responsibility, but I need time. I am convinced we are going to improve and Tuesday is the first chance to show that. The most important thing is the team and I am happy with what I see,” added Emery.

Paris have selection problems in defence with Layvin Kurzawa out injured and captain Silva not having featured this season due to fitness concerns of his own.

Hatem Ben Arfa is also absent, and youngster Presnel Kimpembe could start at left-back.

Meanwhile, Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s departure does not diminish Paris as an attacking force in the eyes of Arsenal’s Spanish full-back Hector Bellerin.

“They have lots of good players so I don’t think it affects them at all,” said Bellerin.

“They have a really strong front three at the moment and you know any player they have up front will be dangerous. We will approach the game in the same way as if he had been there.”

Laurent Koscielny is expected to play for Arsenal despite taking a knock to the face in Saturday’s last-gasp 2-1 win over Southampton.

Quyết pushes T&T to the top in its quest for V.League title

Nguyễn Văn Quyết scored the lone goal of the 25th round match yesterday against Quảng Ninh Coal to help Hà Nội T&T inch closer to the V. League title.

128890533PM
The national midfielder netted during the additional time that seemed headed for a goalless result at the Cẩm Phả Stadium till Quyết sent the ball to the net.
His goal silenced thousands of Quảng Ninh’s fans who strongly believed their team would win as it always did while playing on the home turf, where it had won eight matches in a row. Moreover, Quảng Ninh had beaten Hà Nội T&T 1-0 in their first leg match in March.
However, things did not go well for the leader Quảng Ninh who had a really good start.
Kizito Geofrey needed only nine minutes to tear T&T’s net, but was found in an off-side trap.

Ten minutes later, Nghiêm Xuân Tú found the ball during a counter-attack and passed it along, but his teammates were not quick enough to convert it into a goal for the hosts.

In the second half, both teams roughed it out a little in a tit-for-tat, only to be punished with a red card for each side.

Just as the match was about to end, Quyết stole the ball that had bounced back from a corner-kick. His straight finish brought T&T its 15th win.

The win pushed T&T to the top of the league with 47 points while Quảng Ninh fell to No 4.

V.League’s first leg winner Hải Phòng strongly came back into the race after their 5-2 win over hosts Long An yesterday.

Hải Phòng lost their top place after their 2-3 defeat to Cần Thơ two weeks ago.

With two wins in a row, they are now number two with the same 47 points as T&T.

In yesterday matches, Trần Đình Bảo scored a hattrick while Andre Diego Fagan netted a double.

Long An’s goals went to Trần Thanh An, one in either half.

The team, now second from the bottom, will have to definitely compete in the play-off match this season to avoid relegation.

SHB Đà Nẵng climbed to the third rank and still have the chance to take the trophy after their 3-1 win over Hoàng Anh Gia Lai.

Đà Nẵng have 46 points, just one less than the two ahead of them.

In the last round this weekend, T&T will host FLC Thanh Hóa who beat Sanna Khánh Hòa 2-1 yesterday. Hải Phòng will entertain former champions Sông Lam Nghệ An who defeated Cần Thơ 4-2. Đà Nẵng will visit relegated Đồng Tháp.

FIFA Futsal worldcup 2016, Vietnam beat Guatemala 4-2

Vietnam created a seismic event at the ongoing Futsal World Cup in Colombia on September 11 as they performed beyond expectation, trouncing Guatemala 4-2 in the opener of Group C.

Trận đấu diễn ra kịch tính và hấp dẫn

As World Cup newbies, Vietnamese players were under no pressure and played comfortably against three-time World Cup participants Guatemala.

Minh Tri was the man of the match, contributing a hattrick to Vietnam’s four-goal tally, with one in the first half and two in the latter twenty minutes.

The remaining goal was scored by Tran Van Vu, who successfully converted a late penalty into a fourth, winning goal for Vietnam.

Alongside Minh Tri, goalkeeper Ngo Dinh Thuan was also praiseworthy for his exceptional performance during the match.

Thuan saved numerous shots from the Guatemalan side, only allowing his Central American opponents to pull back two goals, despite their concerted efforts.

The opening victory helped Vietnam join Italy on top of Group C with three points each. Two-time World Cup bronze medallists Italy also defeated Paraguay by the same score in another match later the same day.

\Niềm vui chiến thắng của tuyển Việt Nam

The 2016 Futsal World Cup is taking place from September 10 to October 1, featuring six groups of four teams.

The teams are competing in a round-robin tournament, with the top two teams of each group and the four best third-placed teams advancing into Round 16.

Next up for Vietnam will be a September 14 clash with Paraguay.

Vietnam, Singapore share points in first U19 match

Singapore showed remarkable progress in their match against Vietnam in the ASEAN Football Federation Vietcombank U19 Youth Championship in Hanoi on September 11.

Phung phí cơ hội, U19 Việt Nam chia điểm với U19 Singapore

Nổi bùn của tuyển Việt Nam khi không giành được chiến thắng Last year, Singapore were defeated by a whopping 0-6. One year later, they gave the Vietnamese team a run for their money, not letting them score at all in the second game of Group A that finally ended 0-0 at Hang Day Stadium.

Part of the blame goes to the host strikers for wasting several chances on goal, while some attempts were resisted well by the defenders.

Vietnamese forwards needed ten minutes to check out Singapore’s line-up before they unleashed their attacks from both wings.

Ha Duc Chinh and Ho Minh Di both were given three opportunities, receiving perfect passes from their teammates but failed to score.

The hosts gradually went on to dominate the match, trying to find a way into Singapore’s goal. However, even when Singapore was forced to play with their substitute goalkeeper Ahmad Fadly after Muhammad Zhafran was sidelined due to an injury, the Vietnamese side were still unable to score.

Chinh missed his chance with a shot just 5m in front of goal. Later, Tran Thanh broke into the penalty area but his kick could only find Fadly.

Thanh again wasted an opportunity towards the end when his shot struck the right pole.

Tong Anh Ty was given a chance in additional time but his header proved too wide.

Vietnam and Singapore shared the second position in Group A after the first round matches. Timor-Leste were on top after they defeated the Philippines 2-1 in a game earlier in the day.

The Group B matches will take place on September 12. Defending champions Thailand will play Laos at Hang Day. Myanmar will see Indonesia and title favourites Australia will meet Cambodia. The two latter games will be played at the Vietnam Football Federation’s Youth Training Centre. Doors are open to all spectators, free of charge.

Guardiola wins grudge match, Liverpool rout Leicester

Pep Guardiola rocked old foe Jose Mourinho as Premier League leaders Manchester City extended their perfect start with a 2-1 win at Manchester United, while Liverpool crushed champions Leicester 4-1 on Saturday (Sep 10).

manchester-city

City manager Guardiola inflicted the first defeat of Mourinho’s United reign and collected his eighth win in 17 encounters with his nemesis in a pulsating encounter at Old Trafford.

Guardiola’s side took the lead in a sweet moment of revenge for Kevin De Bruyne, acrimoniously sold by Mourinho when the pair were together at Chelsea, as the Belgium midfielder punished Daley Blind’s miscue to slot past David de Gea in the 15th minute.

Kelechi Iheanacho doubled City’s lead in the 36th minute when he tapped in after a De Bruyne shot hit the post and rebounded to the Nigeria forward.

A blunder from City’s debutant goalkeeper Claudio Bravo allowed United to reduce the deficit in the 42nd minute when he dropped a cross and Zlatan Ibrahimovic pounced to lash home.

But City held firm in the second half despite more nervous moments from Bravo, whose studs-up lunge on Wayne Rooney could have drawn a penalty and a red card.

Guardiola has now masterminded four successive Premier League wins since arriving from Bayern Munich in the close-season and his team sit three points clear of third placed United and second placed Chelsea, who travel to Swansea on Sunday.

“We’re happy. These guys have a heart. In the first half we were better and won a lot of duels against a physically stronger team,” Guardiola said. “In the second half, the long balls, you just pray because it’s almost impossible to control that.”

Mourinho added: “I had two or three players in the first half that, if I know what is going to happen, I don’t play them. This is football and sometimes players disappoint managers. It’s my fault because I’m the manager.”

‘BIG QUALITY’

In front of the biggest Anfield crowd since May 1977, 53,000 fans watched Liverpool mark the unveiling of their extended main stand with a ruthless demolition of Claudio Ranieri’s champions.

Roberto Firmino opened the scoring with a clinical finish in the 13th minute and Sadio Mane increased Liverpool’s advantage with a close-range effort in the 31st.

Liverpool midfielder Lucas, playing out of position in central defence, gave Leicester a lifeline with a terrible 38th-minute backpass that Jamie Vardy drilled into the empty net.

But Adam Lallana’s rocket in the 56th minute and Firmino’s second in the 89th minute wrapped up Liverpool’s second win of the season and left Leicester contemplating a lacklustre start to their title defence.

“It was a good challenge because we can be really strong, but Leicester have big quality and we had to show we believed in our style. It was a good performance in a wonderful place,” manager Jurgen Klopp said.

At the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal left it late to ease the pressure on Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, who has been questioned over his transfer dealings and the team’s slow opening to the season.

The critics were sharpening their knives when Arsenal fell behind in the 18th minute through a Petr Cech own goal from Dusan Tadic’s free-kick.

But Arsenal equalised 11 minutes later thanks to a spectacular overhead kick from Laurent Koscielny.

And Santi Cazorla secured Arsenal’s second win of the season when the Spaniard stroked home a controversial penalty awarded for Jose Fonte’s tackle on Olivier Giroud in the 94th minute.

“It is a relief, because we missed many chances and they had one or two opportunities having thrown everything forward,” Wenger said.

Tottenham swept to a 4-0 victory at bottom of the table Stoke as South Korea midfielder Son Heung-min sparkled on his first appearance of the season.

Son volleyed Tottenham in front just before half-time and netted again with a fine finish from 16 yards in the 56th minute.

Dele Alli bagged Tottenham’s third in the 59th minute and Harry Kane sealed the rout with his first goal of the season in the 70th minute.

Watford staged a superb recovery to beat West Ham 4-2 and secure Italian manager Walter Mazzarri’s first win since taking charge in the close-season.

The Hammers looked in control after Michail Antonio scored with a pair of headers in the fifth minute and 33rd minute at the London Stadium.

But Odion Ighalo netted for Watford in the 41st minute, Troy Deeney equalised in first half stoppage-time and Etienne Capoue put the visitors ahead in the 53rd minute before Jose Holebas made it four 10 minutes later.

Crystal Palace’s 2-1 victory at Middlesbrough ended a three-match winless run, Bournemouth beat West Bromwich Albion 1-0 thanks to Callum Wilson’s late back-heel and Burnley drew 1-1 with Hull.

English Premier League results:

Manchester United 1 Manchester City 2
Arsenal 2 Southampton 1
Bournemouth 1 West Brom 0
Burnley 1 Hull 1
Middlesbrough 1 Crystal Palace 2
Stoke 0 Tottenham 4
West Ham 2 Watford 4
Liverpool 4 Leicester 1
