Man City on top as Baggies and Boro struggle

Manchester City were left top of the Premier League heading into the international break following a 3-1 win at home to West Ham United on Sunday (Aug 28).

manchestercity.jpg.pagespeed.ce.HAaJ4DuzCz (1)

While there was plenty of excitement at Eastlands, the same could not be said of Sunday’s earlier clash between two of the league’s lesser lights as West Bromwich Albion and Middlesbrough played out a dispiriting goalless draw at The Hawthorns.

Raheem Sterling may have become the poster boy for England’s woeful Euro 2016 campaign, which culminated in the embarrassment of a defeat by Iceland, but there was no denying the City forward’s class as he scored twice against the Hammers at Eastlands.

Sterling finished off a slick move in the seventh minute to put City 1-0 up before Fernandinho doubled their lead when he headed in a Kevin De Bruyne free-kick 11 minutes later from seven yards out.

City could easily have scored a third goal before Michail Antonio’s header in the 57th minute gave West Ham an unexpected lifeline.

But with City’s lead reduced to 2-1, Sterling put the result beyond doubt when he collected David Silva’s through-ball late in the game and rolled the ball in from an acute angle.

“Reborn? I keep seeing that word,” Sterling told Sky Sports. “It was a difficult first season at a new club but the manager Pep Guardiola has come in and given me a lot of courage and authority to go forward. He even had a go at me for not dibbling as much.”

City now lead the table on goal difference from Chelsea and Manchester United, who’ve also made a perfect played three, won three start to the Premier League season.

“When you see how many chances we create, they scored with their first chance,” Guardiola told Sky Sports.

“They jumped more than us but we played a good game. Our fans enjoyed it and we are happy,” added the Spaniard, who said he did not see an incident in which Sergio Aguero appeared to elbow West Ham’s Winston Reid.

Meanwhile Hammers boss Slaven Bilic lamented his side’s start to the match. “We did not start well and straight away they (City) had a couple of corners and then scored,” he said.

As for Aguero’s clash with Reid, Bilic added: “I did not see the Sergio Aguero incident. We were going to change the centre-half anyway to go four at the back.”

Elsewhere, West Brom manager Tony Pulis was keen to freshen up his squad before the transfer window closes on Wednesday after a forgettable stalemate with Middlesbrough.

“We have to bring some players in … we need new blood,” he said.

Boro manager Aitor Karanka was pleased by his newly-promoted side’s first clean sheet of the season as they maintained their unbeaten start to the league campaign after a sluggish start against the Baggies.

“I didn’t like the first 15 or 20 minutes, we didn’t play well and didn’t play with the spirit we have to play with,” said Karanka. “The reaction in the second half was better. One thing we cannot lose is our spirit.”Source AFP

Stuttgart sign Japan’s Asano on loan from Arsenal

German side Stuttgart confirmed on Friday (Aug 26) that they had signed Arsenal’s Japanese forward Takuma Asano on a year-long loan.

bundesliga-club

“Takuma completes our attacking players,” said Stuttgart’s sporting director Jan Schindelmeiser. “He is very dangerous in front of goal, is comfortable with both feet and is very mobile.”

Schindelmeiser said that fellow Japanese player Hajime Hosogai had “helped a lot to bring Takuma to the club”.

The 21-year-old signed for Arsenal in July from Sanfrecce Hiroshima with whom he was Japanese champion in 2015.

The loan deal is valid for one season but could be extended.

Asano will be playing in the second tier of German football after Stuttgart were relegated from the Bundesliga at the end of last season.

Ronaldo crowned UEFA Best Player in Europe

Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo won the UEFA Best Player in Europe Award on Thursday (Aug 25) after winning both last season’s Champions League and Euro 2016 with Portugal.

ronaldoAward

Ronaldo received the accolade for the second time in his career after finishing ahead of Real team-mate Gareth Bale and Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann.

“I’m obviously delighted to receive this award, it’s been an incredible season. But these two other players deserve it as well,” said Ronaldo, who also won the prize in 2013-14.

Ronaldo struck the winning spot-kick as Real claimed a record 11th European Cup title, beating city rivals Atletico on penalties in May, before leading his country to Euro 2016 glory.

Ronaldo scored three goals en route to the final of the tournament to equal France’s Michel Platini’s record of nine goals in the European Championship finals.

The award was voted for by journalists from each of UEFA’s 55 member associations.

Norway striker Ada Hegerberg won the women’s award, ahead of France’s Amandine Henry and Dzsenifer Marozsan of Germany, after helping Lyon lift the Women’s Champions League trophy in addition to the French league and cup double.

Guardiola handed Barca reunion with Man City

Pep Guardiola will return to former club Barcelona with Manchester City in the Champions League after the two sides were drawn together in Thursday’s (Aug 25) group stage draw in Monaco.

championsDraw

Guardiola, a European Cup winner with Barca as a player in 1992 before twice guiding the Catalan giants to the Champions League title in 2009 and 2011, will also come up against Borussia Moenchengladbach and Celtic in Group C.

City lost to Barcelona in the last 16 of the competition in 2013-14 and 2014-15, while the Premier League side defeated Gladbach twice in last year’s group stage.

“It’s not a nightmare draw at all because we are in a wonderful competition and we are really happy to be here, but in Barcelona, Borussia Monchengladbach and Celtic we know it won’t be easy,” said City’s director of football Txiki Begiristain.

“We reached the semi-final last season and we want to go far in the Champions League again. It is a very difficult competition to win – for everybody – and you need luck along the way, but we are ready and always trying to improve.”

City captain Vincent Kompany tweeted: “Usual type of draw for us. Better like this. Bring it on.”

Defending champions Real Madrid, who won a record 11th European Cup last season, were paired with Borussia Dortmund in Group F alongside Portugal’s Sporting and Legia Warsaw of Poland.

Dortmund edged Real 4-3 on aggregate in a thrilling semi-final three years ago, but the Spaniards avenged that defeat, winning 3-2 over the two legs, the following season on their way to the 2014 title.

“We now have an appealing group. It’s difficult but equally attractive. Matches against Real are becoming classics for Dortmund. We are looking forward to meeting the holders,” said Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel.

RANIERI GUARDED

Five-time winners Bayern Munich will play last year’s beaten finalists Atletico Madrid in Group D, which also features PSV Eindhoven and Russian first timers Rostov.

“It will be a very difficult group, we have to be careful,” said Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti, in his first season in Germany after replacing Guardiola.

“Atletico Madrid already threw FC Bayern out of the competition last season. Rostov surprised me with a big win over Ajax and Eindhoven only lost narrowly to Atletico last season on penalties. This group won’t be easy.”

Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal are the two clear favourites to progress from Group A ahead of Basel and Bulgarian outfit Ludogorets, with Arsene Wenger’s side preparing for a 19th successive appearance in the competition.

Premier League champions Leicester City were handed a favourable draw in Group G which includes Porto, Club Brugge and FC Copenhagen, but Foxes boss Claudio Ranieri was quick to downplay expectations.

“Once again I say we are underdogs,” said Ranieri. “For this reason we must fight for everything. I want to see my players fight against the best in Europe.

“Last season was wonderful but I want more. Now we are in the Champions League and we have another wonderful opportunity to show our quality.”

Juventus will take on three-time reigning Europa League champions Sevilla as well as Lyon and Dinamo Zagreb in Group H.

Tottenham Hotspur, who return to Europe’s elite for the first time since reaching the 2010-11 quarter-finals, will come up against Russian champions CSKA Moscow, Bayern Leverkusen and Monaco in Group E.

Twice former champions Benfica, Napoli, Dynamo Kiev and Besiktas are in Group B.

The first matches will be played on Sep 13 and 14, while this season’s final is to be held at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Jun 3.

The line-up for the UEFA Champions League group stage:

Group A: Paris Saint-Germain (FRA), Arsenal (ENG), Basel (SUI), Ludogorets Razgrad (BUL)

Group B: Benfica (POR), Napoli (ITA), Dynamo Kiev (UKR), Besiktas (TUR)

Group C: Barcelona (ESP), Manchester City (ENG), Borussia Moenchengladbach (GER), Celtic (SCO)

Group D: Bayern Munich (GER), Atletico Madrid (ESP), PSV Eindhoven (NED), Rostov (RUS)

West Ham crash out of Europa League

English Premier League club West Ham suffered a shock defeat by Romanian side Astra Giurgiu on Thursday (Aug 25) that saw them knocked out of the Europa League in a mirror image of last season’s campaign

west-ham

Slaven Bilic’s side had left the tie in the balance after a disappointing 1-1 away draw a week ago and that result came back to haunt them as Astra took the lead on the stroke of half-time through Filipe Teixeira.

West Ham were guilty of slack defending as Daniel Niculae found Teixeira free in the box with the striker rolling the ball past Darren Randolph.

That was enough to hand the Romanians a 2-1 victory on aggregate, mirroring Astra’s 4-3 win over the Hammers at the same stage of Europe’s second-tier club competition last season, a hammerblow for West Ham fans hoping to see more European football at the club’s new Olympic Stadium base.

In other results, French side Saint-Etienne endured a torrid final 45 minutes at stade Geoffroy-Guichard after goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier was sent off on the stroke of half time for punching Beitar Jerusalem striker Itay Shechter.

The Israeli striker had collided with the French ‘keeper with his studs showing in a seemingly genuine attempt to play the ball and Les Verts’ Ruffier was appropriately sent off for his reaction.

Despite the red carding, Christophe Galtier’s side were never really under threat and saw out a 0-0 draw to progress to the group stages of the Europa League after winning 2-1 in Israel.

Italian side Sassuolo, who finished sixth in Serie A last year, qualified for the first time in their history for a European competition after a lacklustre 1-1 draw against Serbia’s Crvena Zvezda. The Italians had done the bulk of the work last week, winning 3-0 at home.

Belgian side Anderlecht were another high profile team to progress to the next round after they despatched Salvia Prague 3-0 to complete a 6-0 aggregate win.

Greek side Panathinaikos also advanced to the competitions group stage after a 1-1 draw against Danish side Brondby. The Greeks had won the 1st leg 3-0 giving them an overall win of 4-1 on aggregate.

Turkish side Fenerbahce logically advanced to the group stages after outclassing Swiss outfit Grasshoppers. The Turks scored two second half goals through Fernandao and Miloslav Stoch to guarantee qualification.

Liverpool cruise, Chelsea squeeze in League Cup

Daniel Sturridge scored twice as Liverpool strolled into the League Cup third round with a 5-0 win at Burton Albion on Tuesday, while Chelsea edged third-tier Bristol Rovers 3-2

liverpool.jpg.pagespeed.ce.kMJwmjqfQ2

Divock Origi, Roberto Firmino and Sturridge all scored as Liverpool, last season’s beaten finalists, crushed Championship side Burton, who are managed by ex-Liverpool midfielder Nigel Clough.

Michy Batshuayi marked his full Chelsea debut with a brace against Bristol Rovers, while Victor Moses was also on target as manager Antonio Conte enjoyed a third straight competitive win.

“This was a very serious, professional display from our side,” Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp told Sky Sports.

“There were nice goals – nothing to criticise. It was humid today – not easy for either team. We gave a few players match-time because that’s important. Some only got minutes in pre-season.”

Premier League teams Crystal Palace, Everton, Hull City, Swansea City and Stoke City also went through, Peter Crouch scoring a hat-trick for Stoke in a 4-0 win at Stevenage.

But Watford lost 2-1 at home to third-tier Gillingham after extra time and West Bromwich Albion were beaten 4-3 on penalties by League One side Northampton Town following a 2-2 draw.

Klopp handed a debut to Cameroonian centre-back Joel Matip and welcomed back Senegalese winger Sadio Mane following a shoulder injury at Burton’s Pirelli Stadium.

Mane teed up Origi to break the deadlock with a clever back-heel in the 15th minute before Nathaniel Clyne crossed for Firmino to head in the visitors’ second goal.

A Tom Naylor own goal just after the hour made it 3-0 and Sturridge came off the bench to complete the rout with a late brace, tapping in James Milner’s cross and slamming home from Mane’s pass.

At Stamford Bridge, Batshuayi put Chelsea ahead in the 29th minute by sweeping in Nemanja Matic’s cross and two minutes later Pedro Rodriguez set up Moses for a tap-in.

Batshuayi claimed a second from Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s cross, but Bristol Rovers scored either side through Peter Hartley and Ellis Harrison to keep Conte’s men on their toes until the final whistle.

Liverpool and Chelsea, League Cup winners in 2015, both entered the tournament in the second round because they are not involved in European competition this season.

Manchester United, holders Manchester City, Arsenal, Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton and West Ham United will all enter the competition in round three.

Russia’s Rostov through to Champions League group stage

Unheralded Russian side Rostov qualified for the group stage of the Champions League with a famous win over Dutch former European champions Ajax on Wednesday (Aug 24).

mancity_ru

Rostov comfortably won 4-1 in front of a delirious crowd at their compact Olimp-2 stadium to win the play-off round tie 5-2 on aggregate, with Iranian striker Sardar Azmoun, Alexander Erokhin, Ecuador midfielder Christian Noboa and Dmitry Poloz scoring the goals.

Davy Klaassen got one back for Ajax with a late penalty.

The win for Rostov comes after they humbled another famous old European name, Belgian side Anderlecht, in the third qualifying round, and ensures they will enter Thursday’s group-stage draw.

Before this season, their only prior experience of European competition was a defeat to Trabzonspor of Turkey in the Europa League play-offs two years ago.

They finished second to champions CSKA Moscow in last season’s Russian Premier League under Kurban Berdyev, but their hopes of beating Ajax were not helped when the former Rubin Kazan coach resigned earlier this month.

However, former player Dmitri Kirichenko was named as caretaker and oversaw a 1-1 draw in Amsterdam in last week’s first leg before Rostov romped to victory in the return.

Azmoun got up brilliantly to head in a cross from the right by Erokhin for the first-half opener and two goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half killed the tie.

First Erokhin headed in a Timofei Kalachev free-kick and then Noboa deflected in an Ivan Novoseltsev shot.

The icing on the cake came as Poloz ran half the length of the field unchallenged and rounded Ajax ‘keeper Jasper Cillessen – who is expected to sign for Barcelona in the coming days — to make it four.

Ajax got one back through Klaassen’s penalty after Fedor Kudryashov was sent off for a reckless challenge on Kasper Dolberg, but the result will come as a huge blow to Ajax and their new coach Peter Bosz, the successor to Frank de Boer.

It also means champions PSV Eindhoven will be the only Dutch representatives in the group stage.

HAZARD HAT-TRICK

Elsewhere, Manchester City beat Steaua Bucharest 1-0 to secure a 6-0 aggregate win over the Romanian former European Cup winners.

Fabian Delph scored the only goal for Pep Guardiola’s side, as Joe Hart and Yaya Toure both came in from the cold to start at the Etihad Stadium.

There will be four English teams in the group stage and four German clubs as well after Borussia Moenchengladbach crushed Young Boys of Switzerland 6-1 for a 9-2 aggregate victory.

Thorgan Hazard – brother of Eden – and Raffael both grabbed hat-tricks for Andre Schubert’s team with Yoric Ravet getting one back for the side from Bern.

FC Copenhagen of Denmark are into the group stage for the first time in three years after Federico Santander’s late goal secured a 1-1 draw away to APOEL in Nicosia.

The Cypriots, quarter-finalists in 2012, had led on the night thanks to Pieros Sotiriou’s strike but Copenhagen go through 2-1 on aggregate.

Dinamo Zagreb forced extra-time in Austria via Junior Fernandes’ late equaliser against Salzburg, who had led through Valentino Lazaro.

El Arabi Hilal Soudani’s 95th-minute strike then sent the Croatian champions through 3-2 on aggregate following a 2-1 victory on the night.

UEFA Champions League play-off round, second leg results:

APOEL (CYP) 1 FC Copenhagen (DEN) 1
(Copenhagen win 2-1 on aggregate)

Borussia Moenchengladbach (GER) 6 Young Boys (SUI) 1
(Moenchengladbach win 9-2 on aggregate)

Rostov (RUS) 4 Ajax (NED) 1
(Rostov win 5-2 on aggregate)

Manchester City (ENG) 1 Steaua Bucharest (ROM) 0
(Manchester City win 6-0 on aggregate)

Salzburg (AUT) 1 Dinamo Zagreb (CRO) 2
(Dinamo Zagreb win 3-2 on aggregate after extra-time)

Vietnam tie Myanmar 1-1 in U-19 friendly

Vietnam dropped a victory in a 1-1 match against Myanmar during a friendly tournament for U19s, KBZ Bank Cup, in Nay Pyi Taw on August 24.

Tan Sinh opened the score for the visiting side from a penalty at the 22nd minute.

The Vietnamese continued to dominate a game that both sides wanted to win to ensure first place at the ranking table.

Vietnam nearly grabbed their second victory until goalkeeper Do Sy Huy made a mistake in the box area, causing a penalty kick for the host. Shwe Ko succeeded in levelling the result at the 82nd mark.

With one win and one draw Vietnam are at the top of the four-side tournament.

In an earlier match, Thailand beat Japanese Consadole Sapporo Club’s U18 squad 3-1 at the Mandalar Thiri Stadium.

In the next round, Vietnam will face Consadole Sapporo and Thailand will play Myanmar on August 26.

The two top teams will advance to the final while the two at the bottom will play in the third-placed play-off on August 28.
