Vietnam go down fighting against Argentina

Viet Nam’s U20 were thrashed by Argentina U20 4-1 in a friendly in Thong Nhat Stadium tonight.

The match was a rehearsal for the FIFA U20 World Cup in South Korea between May and June 2017 for both teams.

With their outstanding individuals whose skills are world class, the away side dominated the match from kick-off.

Viet Nam set out their stall with a disciplined defence and despite the near-constant pressure, managed some impressive counter-attacks.

However, a slip in concentration from the Vietnamese defenders in the 28th minute, Argentine attacker Ezequiel Ponce received a pass from his teammate Marcelo Torres and opened the scoring.

Though both teams had opportunities to find the net, the first half ended 1-0.

Argentina continued to dominate after the break, with Ezequiel Mansilla doubling their advantage with a header in the early minutes of the second half, Torres again the provider.

The away side pulled away with another two goals through Mendez Ignacio in the 62nd and 87th minutes; however Viet Nam refused to lie down and scored a late consolation through attacker Ha Duc Chinh.

Despite the heavy defeat the Vietnamese side will be able to learn from the experience of competing against a greatly superior opponent.

Viet Nam’s squad will play one more friendly against Vanuatu U20 on May 14 in South Korea, one week before their U20 FIFA World Cup campaign begins against New Zealand in Group E.

Argentina are a regular face at the U20 World Cup, having won the competition six times. This is Viet Nam’s first appearance.

While Argentina hope to come away as winners of the tournament, Viet Nam have already made history as the first ever Southeast Asian team to compete at the tournament.

At the World Cup, Argentina are in Group A with hosts South Korea, Guinea and England, while Viet Nam are in Group E with France, Honduras and New Zealand.

Vietnam to play Argentina in friendly ahead of FIFA U-20 World Cup

Vietnam will challenge Argentina in a friendly match on Wednesday night, in their last test before both teams take part in the FIFA U-20 World Cup in South Korea later this month.
The South American visitors arrived in Ho Chi Minh City on Monday and will hold two training sessions to familiarize themselves with the Thong Nhat Stadium pitch on Tuesday.

Vietnam U-20s also returned to Ho Chi Minh City from Hanoi on Monday afternoon and immediately held a practice session at Thong Nhat the same night, considering the Argentina friendly a good test ahead of their World Cup debut.
Argentina coach Claudio Ubeda said his team would not underestimate the hosts because “it is not for no reason that Vietnam have secured a ticket to the World Cup.”
However, the biggest challenge for the South American players might be Ho Chi Minh City’s current hot weather, given the cold season has begun in Argentina, Ubeda told reporters shortly after the team’s arrival.
The coach spoke highly of Vietnam U-20s, adding that the upcoming game was a chance for him to know more about Southeast Asian football.

At the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup, which runs from May 20 to June 11, newcomers Vietnam will share Group E with France, Honduras and New Zealand. Argentina are in Group A along with hosts South Korea, Guinea and England.
In preparation for the competition, Argentina have already participated in the South American U-20 Cup and played friendly games with Uruguay and other local club teams.
The match in Vietnam will be their final preparation, Ubeda said, adding that Argentina aspired to “advance as far as possible” at the upcoming tournament in South Korea.
Argentina U-20s consist of many players from the country’s top clubs, including Marcelo Torres (Boca Juniors), Ezequiel Barco (Independiente), Franco Petroli (River Plate), Santiago Ascacibar (Estudiantes) and Lautaro Martinez (Racing Club).
Transfermarkt.com values the entire Argentina U-20 squad at US$25 million, with midfielder Ascacibar alone valued at $8.3 million. The website contains no data for Vietnam U-20s.
The friendly kicks off at 7:00 pm at Thong Nhat Stadium on Wednesday. On May 14, the Argentines will play another friendly with Vietnam U-22s in Hanoi.
Vietnam booked their historic World Cup berth in South Korea by finishing as one of the top four teams at last year’s AFC U-19 Championship in Bahrain, which doubled as the Asian Football Confederation’s qualifier for the World Cup.
The three other Asian teams to secure a place were Iran, Japan, and Saudi Arabia.

Việt Nam ready for U20 futsal champs

Việt Nam are expecting a berth in the knockout stage of the Asian Football Confederation U20 Futsal Championship, which will be held in Thailand next week.

The team arrived in Bangkok nearly a week ahead of the event and will train hard in preparation for the matches.
Speaking with reporters prior to their departure for Bangkok on May 7, coach Hector Souto Vazquez said he was pleased with his players’ performance during their three weeks of practice in HCM City.

The Spanish said things were on the right track and the players had showed their determination and strong mind. However they still did not have enough competition experience, which was their main weakness. It was why he wanted to come to Thailand early so that the players had enough time to get familiar with the gymnasium and the weather.

The team also plan to play two friendly matches — Uzbekistan on Wednesday and China on Saturday — ahead of the tournament.

Vazquez said through these matches, his players would sharpen their skills and gain insights because both teams were strong rivals. This would help him not only choose the right team, but also make his players more confident for the official games.

The tournament is being organised on May 16-26 at the Bangkok Arena and the Huamark Indoor Stadium.

Việt Nam are in Group B with Japan, Chinese Taipei, Tajikistan and Indonesia.

There are 16 other teams competing in three different groups.

The group winners and runners-up from each group will qualify for the knockout stage — the quarterfinals.
Coach Vazquez said information about the youth teams was not updated regularly, therefore he had very little idea about Việt Nam’s rivals.
However, he said Japan and Indonesia were expected to be very strong teams. Japan’s senior team were an Asian powerhouse, while Indonesia had a quality youth training system, with tournaments for the U16s and U18s.
The coach also said Tajikistan had played a friendly match with Uzbekistan and won 7-4. Following that result, he had decided to keep an eye on the team.
According to the head of the delegation, Trần Anh Tú, Việt Nam are targeting a berth in the quarterfinals.
Việt Nam will face Tajikistan in their first match on May 17. Their next rivals will be Indonesia (May 18), Chinese Taipei (May 19) and Japan (May 20)

Việt Nam to show best against Argentina ahead of World Cup

Coach Hoàng Anh Tuấn of Việt Nam’s U20 squad said the upcoming match against Argentina would show supporters how his team have prepared for the FIFA World Cup in South Korea.

Tuấn Anh has been back after 6 months

Speaking at a pre-match conference yesterday, Tuấn said his players would show their best skills spirit at the friendly at the HCM City’s Thống Nhất Stadium tonight.

“We have set our target. We have worked hard for months. It is not for the Argentina match but the World Cup. However we hope to learn a lot from the game,” said Tuấn.

“Argentina are many levels above us so we are under no pressure in this match. The main problem is the mentality of players. The coaching staff have to improve it and I believe they will,” he added.

The former national team defender said Argentina has outstanding individuals whose skills are world class with good physiques. However in their 20s there would be little physical difference between the two sides.

At the press conference, captain Nguyễn Quang Hải was confident.

He said, “My teammates and I are ready for tomorrow’s match. As a captain I will do my best to encourage them.”

On the other side, coach Claudio Ubeda and captain Santiago Ascacibar talked up Việt Nam.

Ascasibar said his team considered it an important match to prepare for the World Cup.

Ubeda said his team had watched Việt Nam’s matches and they would be good preparation for the World Cup. He also said he would choose his team for the World Cup based on his player’s performance in this match.

He said it was not an accident that Việt Nam qualified for the World Cup They proved themselves a quality team and a worthy rival for Argentina.

Argentina are a regular face at the U20 World Cup, having won the competition six times. This is Việt Nam’s first appearance.

While Argentina hope to come away as winners of the tournament, Việt Nam have already made history as the first ever Southeast Asian team to compete at the tournament.

The match will be live aired from 7pm at a sold-out Thống Nhất Stadium.

Vietnam announces 21 players for U20 World Cup mission

Vietnamese coach Hoang Anh Tuan on May 7 announced the official list of 21 players who will represent Vietnam at the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup, taking place in the Republic of Korea (ROK) from May 20 to June 11.

The U20 Vietnam lineup for the ROK trip will feature three goalkeepers, seven defenders, eight midfielders and three forwards.

In addition to midfielder Bui Tien Dung, who suffered a heavy injury during the team’s training course in Germany, three other names are also beyond the World Cup plan of the coaching staff, including midfielders Phan Thanh Hau, Truong Tien Anh and Truong Van Thai Quy.

However, as the International Football Federation (FIFA) allows each team to replace two players at the pre-tournament technical meeting on May 19, coach Hoang Anh Tuan has decided to arrive in the ROK with 23 players, with Phan Thanh Hau and Truong Tien Anh as preventive names.

As scheduled, U20 Vietnam will play a friendly match against six-time champions U20 Argentina at Thong Nhat Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City on May 10 night before heading for the ROK the following day.

Earlier in October 2016, U19 Vietnam (now U20 Vietnam), led by coach Hoang Anh Tuan, performed brilliantly to make the semifinals of the 2016 AFC U19 Championships in Bahrain, thereby securing one of Asia’s four places at the U20 World Cup 2017 in the ROK, where they have been drawn in Group E along with France, Honduras and New Zealand.

The list of U20 Vietnam’s 21 players:

Three goalkeepers: Nguyen Ba Minh Hieu, Do Sy Huy and Bui Tien Dung

Seven defenders: Do Thanh Thinh, Doan Van Hau, Dang Van Toi, Ho Tan Tai, Tran Dinh Trong, Huynh Tan Sinh and Nguyen Trong Dai.

Eight midfielders: Tong Anh Ty, Nguyen Quang Hai, Ho Minh Di, Dinh Thanh Binh, Tran Thanh Son, Luong Hoang Nam, Duong Van Hao and Nguyen Hoang Duc.

Three forwards: Nguyen Tien Linh, Ha Duc Chinh and Tran Thanh.

Substitutes: Phan Van Hau and Truong Tien Anh.

Vietnam gear up for World Cup

Viet Nam U20 coach Hoàng Anh Tuấn said the upcoming friendly match between his team and Argentina on May 10 will be final rehearsal for the FIFA U20 World Cup in South Korea between May and June 2017.

“We will play in the way we have prepared. Facing a strong team from South America will be a comprehensive dress rehearsal for the Word Cup,” said Tuấn.

“Việt Nam have one more friendly match in South Korea but playing against Argentina at home will be a wonderful experience,” Tuấn added.

Tuấn said the World Cup is a tough competition. If his players don’t get in good physical shape, they will struggle to perform and carry out his tactics.

This is why the team are training very hard in terms of physical fitness.

“I have a headache in terms of the team’s fitness as many players don’t play in the national premier league, while others are overloaded. For example, midfielder Nguyễn Quang Hải has played many games in the V.League 1 and AFC Cup. He is tired so I have to manage him. Tough physical training will help me eliminate several players before selecting 21 out of 24 players on May 8,” said Tuấn.

“At the World Cup, my players have to run and think a lot. France and New Zealand will play at a high speed. We also can’t forget Honduras,” said Tu ấn.

“Việt Nam’s players start from a low football foundation so we have to prepare well. First of all, my footballers must be strong,” Tuấn added.

To prepare for the Cup, Việt Nam have had a two-week training camp in Germany. They had friendly matches with U21 Roda JC of the Netherland, U23 Borussia Monchengladbach and U19 Fortuna 05 Dusseldorf.

During these matches, Việt Nam scored eight goals but Tuấn isn’t optimistic.

“I don’t have any illusion that these goals will be goals in the World Cup but I know which players are good or weak and which points to adjust,” said Tuấn.

Meanwhile, Argentina coach Claudio Ubeda announced his 21 players coming to Việt Nam and taking part in the World Cup. Among them, 19 compete in Argentina, only two play in Europe. There include big names Exequiel Palacios of River Plate, Ezequiel Barco of Independiente, Lautaro Martinez of Racing Club and Marcelo Torres of Boca Juniors.

Argentina will arrive in HCM City on May 8. They will meet U20 Việt Nam on May 10 and then face the U22 team two days later.

At the World Cup, Argentina are in Group A with hosts South Korea, Guinea and England. While Việt Nam are in Group E with France, Honduras and New Zealand.

Liverpool tightens hold on third place in Premier League

Emre Can scored a sensational overhead bicycle kick as Liverpool galvanised their grip on third place in the Premier League by winning 1-0 at Watford on Monday (May 1).

Having seen top-four rivals Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal all drop points on Sunday, Liverpool capitalised thanks to Can’s jaw-dropping effort in first-half injury time.

The Germany midfielder’s fifth goal of the season took Liverpool three points above fourth-place City, albeit having played a game more, inching Jurgen Klopp’s side closer to Champions League qualification.

“The goal was spectacular, of course,” Liverpool manager Klopp told Sky Sports. “It was clear we have to work and that is what we did. It won’t be easy for anyone to win here. We needed a bit of luck, but we worked hard for it.”

It was Liverpool’s third successive away win and got them back on track after a 2-1 home defeat by Crystal Palace on their previous outing had ended a seven-game unbeaten streak.

The only disappointment for the men in red at Vicarage Road was the early departure of playmaker Philippe Coutinho after he appeared to sustain a dead leg.
Walter Mazzarri’s Watford remain 13th, having been denied a last-gasp equaliser when centre-back Sebastian Prodl’s crisp effort thudded against the crossbar.

“We didn’t deserve to lose,” said Mazzarri. “Their wonder goal means nothing is going on our side because the first real chance they had, and it wasn’t really a chance, they took it.”

M’Baye Niang registered an early shot on target for the hosts, but a sleepy start to the game was remarkable more for injuries than penalty-box action.

Coutinho came off second-best in an early collision with recalled Watford defender Adrian Mariappa.

SUCCESS SUPPLIES FIZZ

The Brazil international soldiered on until the 13th minute before giving way for Adam Lallana, who came on to make his first appearance after a month out with a groin injury.

Six minutes later Watford were forced into a change of their own when defender Miguel Britos signalled that he was unable to continue, which brought Christian Kabasele into the fray.

Liverpool went close with a couple of efforts from distance, Can extending Heurelho Gomes from range and Lallana rattling the bar with a stunning 20-yard volley after Gomes had punched clear.

The visitors were toiling, their lack of ideas exposed when Lucas Leiva received a 44th-minute booking for a totally unconvincing attempt to win a penalty off Tom Cleverley.

But two minutes into stoppage time Liverpool went ahead with a Goal of the Season contender.

Lucas flighted a pass into the box and with Nordin Amrabat standing off, Can launched himself into a magnificent scissors kick from 15 yards out that catapulted the ball into the top-left corner.

“That is the best goal I’ve ever scored,” Can said.

Buoyed by Can’s moment of brilliance, Liverpool set about putting the game to bed in the second half.

Gomes had to box away a James Milner free-kick and twice saved from Divock Origi, palming away a curling effort and then standing up well to thwart the Belgian striker in a one-on-one.

It took Watford until the 68th minute to register another shot on target.

Etienne Capoue’s rising effort from distance was tipped over by Simon Mignolet, only for the officials to award a goal-kick, sparking a furious Watford reaction that saw Capoue booked for dissent.

The introduction of 21-year-old Nigerian Isaac Success gave Watford some attacking fizz and Daryl Janmaat almost caught Mignolet out with a curling effort from wide on the left.

Liverpool might have won more comfortably had Gomes not saved from Joel Matip and substitute Daniel Sturridge, but they were indebted to the woodwork for thwarting Prodl at the death.

Suarez double keeps Barca level with Madrid

Barcelona and Real Madrid remain locked together on 81 points at the top of La Liga after seeing off Espanyol and Valencia respectively on Saturday (Apr 29).

afp_suarez_double

Madrid maintain the edge as they have a game in hand but needed a winner four minutes from time from Marcelo to see off Valencia 2-1.

Luis Suarez scored twice as Barcelona gratefully pounced on a series of Espanyol errors to win the Catalan derby 3-0 and move top of the table thanks to their better head-to-head record over Real.

“The only thing we can do is win our games and keep putting a little pressure on,” Suarez told Spanish TV station Movistar. “They have a difficult and tiring schedule and we’ll see what happens come the end of the season.”

Jose Manuel Jurado was the Espanyol villain as he dragged well wide with easily the clearest chance of the first half.

The former Watford midfielder’s misplaced pass then teed up Suarez to end a five-game goal drought with a neat finish five minutes into the second period.

Lionel Messi didn’t add to his 49 goals this season but still played a vital role as he teed up Ivan Rakitic for Barca’s second 14 minutes from time.

And Suarez benefited from another defensive howler, this time from Aaron Martin, to slot home his second three minutes from the end.

At the Bernabeu, Marcelo’s late intervention saved Cristiano Ronaldo’s blushes despite the Portuguese setting another goalscoring record as he failed to beat Valencia goalkeeper Diego Alves from the penalty spot for the third time in four attempts.

Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane recalled eight of the side that started last weekend’s 3-2 Clasico defeat to Barcelona and had been rested for a 6-2 thrashing of Deportivo la Coruna in midweek.

However, the habitual first team nearly got off to the worst possible start when Santi Mina hit the post inside the first minute.

RONALDO ECLIPSES GREAVES

But Ronaldo eased Real nerves as he planted Dani Carvajal’s cross into the far corner in characteristic fashion on 27 minutes.

That goal took Ronaldo’s tally in league football to 367 goals to surpass legendary English striker Jimmy Greaves across Europe’s top divisions.

However, even the four-time world player of the year struggles to beat Alves from the spot as the Brazilian made his sixth penalty save of the season when he dived low to his left to deny Ronaldo early in the second half.

That miss looked costly when Dani Parejo’s brilliant free-kick set up a grandstand finish eight minute from time.

Yet, for the seventh time in La Liga this season, Madrid struck as Marcelo cut inside onto his weaker right foot to fire across and past the helpless Alves to joyous scenes of relief at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“It is true that we were in a comfort zone for 30 minutes, the fans were the same,” said Zidane. “After Valencia scored they started to push the players on once more and it was a completely different match. We know we are going to have to suffer until the end of the season.”

Next up for Real is a Champions League semi-final first leg on Tuesday at home to a Atletico Madrid side full of confidence after they thumped Las Palmas 5-0 to move three points clear of Sevilla in third.

Atletico struck three times in the first 18 minutes in the Canary Islands as Kevin Gameiro netted a double either side of Saul Niguez’s header.

Kevin-Prince Boateng was then sent off for Las Palmas and Atletico made their man advantage count with further goals from Thomas Partey and Fernando Torres.

Tony Adams’s Granada were relegated after they lost for the fourth straight game since the Englishman took charge, going down 2-1 at Real Sociedad.

Meanwhile, Levante sealed promotion back to La Liga with a 1-0 win over Real Oviedo.

Collated Spanish La Liga results on Saturday:

Real Sociedad 2 Granada 1

Real Madrid 2 Valencia 1

Las Palmas 0 Atletico Madrid 5

Espanyol 0 Barcelona 3

Richard Lai, a 55-year-old US citizen, pleaded guilty on Thursday in a federal court in New York to accepting nearly US$1 million in bribes from 2009-2014, US prosecutors announced.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud conspiracy and one count of failing to disclose foreign bank accounts, and agreed to pay US$1.1 million in fines and forfeiture.

The massive US investigation, which was first unveiled in May 2015, has seen federal prosecutors in New York indict around 40 football and sports marketing executives with allegedly receiving tens of millions of bribes and kickbacks.

It is the largest corruption scandal in the history of soccer and precipitated the downfall of longtime FIFA president Sepp Blatter and his former heir apparent, Michel Platini.

US prosecutors said Lai has been president of the Guam Football Association, on the tiny US territory in the Pacific since 2001, and is currently on the FIFA Audit and Compliance Committee.

He admitted to receiving US$100,000 in bribes from an official in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in 2011 in exchange for voting for him for FIFA president.

He also pleaded guilty to receiving more than US$850,000 in bribes between 2009 and 2014 from a faction of soccer officials wanting his help to influence FIFA and gain control of the AFC.

Palm-fringed Guam has a population of just 170,000.

“Today’s plea marks another important step in our ongoing effort to root out corruption in international soccer,” said Bridget Rohde, acting US attorney for the eastern district of New York.

Many of those indicted in the ongoing investigation have pleaded guilty and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors in exchange for possible leniency.

A November 6 trial is scheduled to begin Nov 6 for five defendants currently in the United States who continue to plead innocent.
