Ibrahimovic and Pogba shine as United win again

Zlatan Ibrahimovic struck twice and Paul Pogba, the world’s most expensive player, shone on his return as Manchester United beat Southampton 2-0 on Friday to make it two wins from two Premier League games.

Ibrahimovic, playing his first home game for the club since leaving Paris St Germain in the close season, opened the scoring in the 36th minute when he produced a towering leap to power a header into the net from a cross by Wayne Rooney.

The 34-year-old Swede added a second from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute after substitute Jordy Clasie fouled defender Luke Shaw as he drove into the box.

It was Ibrahimovic’s third goal in two league games and guaranteed maximum points for manager Jose Mourinho on his first appearance in the home dugout.

“We were good enough to deserve the victory,” said Mourinho. “We won comfortably and the margin could have been bigger.”

Pogba, back at his first club after being bought from Juventus for a fee of 89 million pounds (US$116.35 million), demonstrated his class with a dynamic midfield display.

The French international, who missed the season-opening win at Bournemouth last week through suspension, dribbled with strength and combined well with Ibrahimovic and Rooney.

“Pogba was so good,” Mourinho said. “He needs the freedom he had. I couldn’t be happier with him.”

ROMEU INJURY

Southampton, who drew with Watford last week, started brightly but were rocked by an early injury to Spanish midfielder Oriol Romeu who limped off in the 12th minute.

The visitors enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges although they lacked a cutting edge with Nathan Redmond and Shane Long finishing tamely.

United grew in stature and went in front when Rooney, making his 600th appearance in club football, picked out Ibrahimovic with a pinpoint centre.

Left back Shaw, a constant threat against his former club, was felled seven minutes into the second half and Ibrahimovic sent keeper Fraser Forster the wrong way from the spot.

Pogba went forward in search of a goal late on but failed to test Forster.

“We are becoming better and better,” said Ibrahimovic. “It’s a good start. We need to get used to winning.”

Five highlights of Round 22, Toyota V-League 2016

The 22nd round of the 2016 V-League continued to see Hai Phong’s top spot threatened after their second match with no victory and Hoang Anh Gia Lai’s extraordinary form with four consecutive wins. Let’s take a look at the five highlights in this round of play.

ebdbe90de2143e6d4aa701457b0f354c

1. Hai Phong’s top spot threatened

Hai Phong is facing the risk of losing their top position in the V-League standings after suffering a disappointing 1-1 draw with FLC Thanh Hoa on August 21. It was the team’s second consecutive match with no victory, giving others, including SHB Da Nang, Quang Ninh Coal and Hanoi T&T, the chance to reduce the gap with an easy three points against lower-rated opponents.

2. Gaston Merlo carries on with scoring streak

Gaston Merlo contributed one goal to SHB Da Nang’s 4-1 victory over Long An last weekend, his sixth goal in six consecutive matches. Merlo is leading the V-League’s “top scorer” competition with 17 goals, two goals more than Hoang Vu Samson of T&T. If carrying on with the efficiency of one goal per match like at present, Merlo will undoubtedly pocket this year’s top scorer title.

3. Hoang Anh Gia Lai one win from safe zone

Hoang Anh Gia Lai’s Sunday victory against Sanna Khanh Hoa BVN is their fourth consecutive win in recent V-League rounds. With 27 points in hand, the Gia Lai team is holding a nine-point advantage over the second last team, Long An. Dominating face-to-face performance, Hoang Anh Gia Lai is possessing the rights to defend their place in next year’s V-League season as the 2016 tournament has just four rounds left to go.

4. A match with no goal celebration

The Hai Phong-FLC Thanh Hoa clash saw two goals split evenly for both teams. But no goal celebrations were ever seen, as both Dinh Tung and Van Thang drove the ball into the net of their previous teams.

5. Sad comeback day for foreigners

Round 22 witnessed the return of three foreign strikers Fagan, Stevens (Hai Phong) and Claudecir (QNK Quang Nam) after suspension. However, none of the players were able to score to secure their teams the full three points. Most regrettably, Stevens could not successfully convert a penalty in Hai Phong’s 1-1 draw against FLC Thanh Hoa.

Liverpool rocked by Burnley, Manchester City stroll

Liverpool crashed to an embarrassing 2-0 defeat at Burnley on Saturday (Aug 20), while Manchester City crushed Stoke City 4-1 to extend Pep Guardiola’s perfect start in the Premier League.

liverpool

While Liverpool stumbled and City strolled, champions Leicester City are still awaiting the first win of their title defence after being held to a 0-0 draw by Arsenal.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool enjoyed the most eye-catching result of the Premier League’s opening weekend when they won 4-3 at Arsenal.

But the Reds suffered a nightmare in their second match as Welsh forward Sam Vokes scored his first top-flight goal in the second minute after Andre Gray pounced on a woeful pass by Reds right-back Nathaniel Clyne.

Liverpool were condemned to a first league loss at Turf Moor since 1973 when Gray ran onto Steven Defour’s pass and punished slack marking to fire home in the 37th minute.

“How can I be happy with this? After we gave away the first goal Burnley defended for their lives,” Klopp said. “We had absolutely no luck and everybody needs to be more clinical. Burnley deserved to win with a very passionate performance. We have to say it was not enough today.”

At Stoke’s Bet365 Stadium, City striker Sergio Aguero netted twice in the first half to take his goal tally to six in three games and send Guardiola’s side to the top of the table with their second successive win.

The Argentine opened the scoring with a 27th-minute penalty, awarded for a Ryan Shawcross tug on Nicolas Otamendi, and bagged his second in the 36th minute with a header from Kevin De Bruyne’s free-kick.

Stoke got one back in the 49th minute when Raheem Sterling was penalised for a slight push on Shawcross and Bojan Krkic stepped up to convert the spot-kick.

But the visitors held firm and Spain forward Nolito scored with a pair of close-range efforts in the 86th and 90th minutes to give City manager Guardiola a third consecutive victory in all competitions.

“I’m really impressed with the players as human beings and with their performance,” former Bayern Munich and Barcelona boss Guardiola said. “We have only had one month together. There is time to get better.”

City’s romp in the Potteries took them above arch rivals Manchester United, who defeated Southampton 2-0 on Friday.

At the King Power Stadium, Leicester, beaten by Hull last weekend, saw two penalty appeals turned down by referee Mark Clattenburg – first when Laurent Koscielny stretched to tackle Danny Drinkwater, then when Ahmed Musa was challenged by Hector Bellerin.

To cap a frustrating day, Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri also saw French midfielder Nampalys Mendy forced off with a second-half injury.

LAST LAUGH

Diego Costa fired Chelsea to another late victory as the Spain striker secured a 2-1 win at Watford just days after his last-gasp heroics saw off West Ham United.

Watford boss Walter Mazzarri and Chelsea manager Antonio Conte fell out during their time coaching Napoli and Juventus respectively and it was the Blues chief who had the last laugh in their first meeting in England.

Etienne Capoue broke the deadlock in the 55th minute when Watford’s French midfielder lashed his shot into the top corner from Adlene Guedioura’s cross.

But Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi came off the bench to equalise in the 80th minute after Heurelho Gomes weakly parried Eden Hazard’s shot.

Batshuayi’s first goal since his pre-season move from Marseille sparked Chelsea into life and Costa, fortunate to still be on the pitch after controversially avoiding a second booking for diving, rifled in from a Cesc Fabregas assist in the 87th minute.

Kenya midfielder Victor Wanyama scored his first goal for Tottenham Hotspur to clinch a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace at White Hart Lane.

Wanyama, a summer signing from Southampton, headed home from close-range in the 83rd minute after Harry Kane flicked a corner in his direction to give Tottenham their first victory of the season and leave Palace pointless.

Gareth Barry’s first goal for over two years gave Everton a 2-1 victory at West Bromwich Albion.

Albion took an early lead through Gareth McAuley, but equalised through Kevin Mirallas in first-half stoppage time and former England midfielder Barry headed the 60th-minute winner.

Troubled Hull City continued to make light of their difficult pre-season with a 2-0 win at Swansea City as late goals from Shaun Maloney and Abel Hernandez lifted them to third.

English Premier League results:

Stoke 1 Manchester City 4
Burnley 2 Liverpool 0
Swansea 0 Hull 2
Tottenham 1 Crystal Palace 0
Watford 1 Chelsea 2
West Brom 1 Everton 2
Leicester 0 Arsenal 0

Thanh Hóa are without a win in their last three matches and to make matters worse, technical director Lê Thụy Hải has resigned, with the club citing medical reasons.

Thanh Hóa’s poor form has caused dissatisfaction among board members, with defeats to Hoàng Anh Gia Lai and Sông Lam Nghệ An particular jarring. However, Thanh Hóa claimed Hải stepped due to health concerns.

70-year-old Hải coached Thanh Hóa during the 2001-03 seasons in the first division and then returned for the 2010-11 season, when the team were in the national premier league.

Thanh Hóa finished third in the 2014-15 season, under young coach Hoàng Thanh Tùng.

Free football training for poor City kids

On a hot Sunday morning, Đinh Nguyễn Tuấn Tú was so absorbed in perfecting his moves on a football field in HCM City’s Bình Thạnh District that he lost track of time.

LO73643559PM

Tú, who lives at Ánh Sáng Shelter in District 3, is one of a group of disadvantaged children learning how to play football with professional coaches as part of the Football for Community Outreach programme.

Tú said that after hearing about the programme, he didn’t hesitate to join. Since then, he has practiced often and can now control and pass the ball well on the field, which is made of artificial turf.

“I was bored watching TV a lot at the shelter. I prefer playing football on the field, where I learn new techniques. The coaches also teach us how to play in a friendly way,” Tú said.

The children participating in the programme are from welfare centres, shelters, poor families and other marginalised groups in the city.

Begun last year, it is organised by the city’s Social Welfare Centre for Children in co-operation with UNICEF, Manchester United Fund, and Norwegian Football Association.

Before football training, the children are taught how to avoid accidents that could cause injuries when playing.

Phạm Chí Thiên, 13, of Bình Thạnh District, whose parents sell lottery tickets to make a living, is also learning how to play.

“At home alone, there is nothing to do or to play with,” he said. “The coaches teach me the importance of co-operation with my peers, and we’re also told not to be too hungry for success.”

Trần Anh Tuấn, who works at the District 10 Shelter, said the children now had more friends and were more confident about integrating into society.

“Going out is good for their psycho-social and spiritual development,” he said, adding that the programme showed increased concern from city authorities about children’s well-being.

However, only shelters with enough financial sources have enough money to fund such programmes for their children.

Phạm Đình Nghinh, head of the city’s Social Welfare Centre for Children, said the programme, which offers life skills’ instruction, also enhanced the children’s dignity.

Country representative of UNICEF Việt Nam, Youssouf Abdel-Jelil, said that many poor children, particularly girls, and other marginalised groups, had no place to play.

When they are given a space to play, they can become more connected to family, community, city and society.

According to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), children have a right to play. Việt Nam was the first country in Asia and the second in the world to ratify the CRC, on February 20, 1990.

“This right is little known, sometimes not even talked about. And it is even derided. Very often, we, as adults, tend to devalue play. We see it as frivolous, as time wasted, or not as important as academic study and housework,” Abdel-Jelil said.

As a signatory to the CRC, the state of Việt Nam agreed to respect and promote the rights of the child to play and provide appropriate and equal opportunities for recreational and leisure activity.

UNICEF Việt Nam has been working closely with HCM City to support the fulfillment of rights of all children.

The Football for Community Outreach programme is an “opportunity for the city to embrace all its children and provide an enabling environment to bring vulnerable children into the arms of their family, their community and their city”, according to Abdel-Jelil.

The city’s programme sets an example for other localities in Việt Nam and across the ASEAN region.
