Premier League: Chelsea and Tottenham share spoils at Stamford Bridge

Gylfi Sigurdsson’s late leveller earned Tottenham a point from their 2-2 draw with Chelsea as the race for UEFA Champions League football remains in the balance.

Rafa Benitez’s men looked on course for the victory that would effectively secure a top-four finish after goals from Oscar and Ramires either side of Emmanuel Adebayor’s stunner for Spurs.

But Sigurdsson stepped off the bench to curl home 10 minutes from time to leave the visitors three points adrift of Chelsea and one behind Arsenal with just two games to go.

Chelsea took the lead with 10 minutes on the clock when Oscar nodded home from close range at the far post after Gary Cahill had met Juan Mata’s corner from the right with Tottenham’s defence failing to pick up their men.

Spurs skipper Michael Dawson had to be brave to put his head directly in the way of a stinging Eden Hazard shot in the 25th minute after the Belgium international had cut inside Kyle Walker.

The visitors levelled moments later with a stunning effort from Adebayor, with the big striker picking the ball up inside his own half and advancing unchecked deep into Chelsea territory before passing the ball into Petr Cech’s top corner.

Former Gunners forward Adebayor had a chance to top that stunning strike when he was picked out by Jan Vertonghen’s vision, but he could not control his volley from 12 yards out and fired over the bar.

Benitez’s men put their noses back in front in the 39th minute when Fernando Torres threaded a pass from out on the right through the Spurs defence for Ramires to burst onto and toe-poke his finish across Hugo Lloris and into the bottom corner.

Chelsea made a strong start to the second period and should have extended their lead when Hazard was found in space in the Spurs box, only to fire over the bar after leaving Walker on his backside with a neat turn.

They looked certain to make it 3-1 in the 61st minute when a sumptuous Hazard flick sent Mata racing away before squaring the ball to Ramires, only for the Brazilian to lose his footing at the crucial moment and go crashing to the turf.

Spurs weathered the storm and hit back, with Vertonghen’s attempted overhead kick at the far post from Tom Huddlestone’s free-kick going over the bar with Lewis Holtby in a better position to convert behind him.

Andre Villas-Boas’ men levelled 10 minutes from the end when Benoit Assou-Ekotto’s pass to Adebayor was neatly back-heeled by the big striker into the path of Sigurdsson to fire beyond Cech for a point which keeps Spurs in the race for the top four, although they remain behind both of their London rivals.

Chelsea interim boss Benitez admitted after the match that he felt his side had missed the chance to secure a top-four finish by squandering several second-half opportunities.

He told Sky Sports: “With our counter-attacks we have to do something more. We had the chances to score the third goal and finish the game but we didn’t do it.”

Tottenham counterpart Villas-Boas wants his side to ‘keep the faith’in the pursuit of Champions League qualification.

He told Sky Sports: “Obviously with the point we don’t depend on ourselves any more as somebody has to drop points. Our focus is on doing our job in these remaining fixtures. In the Premier League, everything can happen.”

Premier League – Ferguson to retire as Manchester United manager

Sir Alex Ferguson is stepping down as manager of Manchester United at the end of the season after 26 and a half years at the helm and will join the club’s board.

1004944-16299424-640-360

Ferguson, 71, took over from Ron Atkinson in 1986 and won two Champions League crowns, the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, 13 league titles – including this season’s competition – five FA Cups and four League Cups at Old Trafford to make him the most successful manager in British football history following a successful eight years in charge of Aberdeen.

Amid rampant speculation that he would step down in Wednesday’s papers, United tweeted: “Sir Alex Ferguson retires. #thankyousiralex”.

A club statement read: “The most successful manager in English football history will bow out after the West Bromwich Albion game on 19 May and join the football club board.”

“The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly. It is the right time,” said Scot Ferguson, who is set for hip surgery in the summer.

“It was important to me to leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so.

“The quality of this league winning squad, and the balance of ages within it, bodes well for continued success at the highest level whilst the structure of the youth set-up will ensure that the long-term future of the club remains a bright one.

“Our training facilities are amongst the finest in global sport and our home Old Trafford is rightfully regarded as one of the leading venues in the world.

“Going forward, I am delighted to take on the roles of both director and ambassador for the club. With these activities, along with my many other interests, I am looking forward to the future.

“I must pay tribute to my family, their love and support has been essential. My wife Cathy has been the key figure throughout my career.”

Ferguson, who originally retired in 2001 but backtracked on the decision – saying it had been a terrible mistake – won three Scottish titles, a Cup Winners’ Cup, four Scottish Cups and a Scottish League Cup with Aberdeen.

The story originally emerged late on Tuesday evening, with reports that United’s player versus coaches golf day at Dunham Massey had been overshadowed by the expectation of such an announcement.

David Moyes and Jose Mourinho have emerged as favourites to take over. Scot Moyes is out of contract at long-term employers Everton in the summer while Mourinho is widely expected to leave Real Madrid this summer.

The Portuguese had been thought to be set to return to former club Chelsea, but Ferguson vacating the Old Trafford hotseat now throws that anticipated move into doubt.

Premier League – Dzeko volley gives City win over West Brom

Premier League, Etihad Stadium – Manchester City 1 (Dzeko 35) West Bromwich Albion 0.

1004801-16297708-640-360

Edin Dzeko’s fine volley saw Manchester City beat West Brom 1-0 at home to confirm a minimum of third place in the Premier League.

On 35 minutes Bosnian striker Dzeko met a fine cross from Carlos Tevez with a perfectly-executed volley that bounced past Boaz Myhill into the net.

City had dominated the first half, but the second was all West Brom as they bombarded the hosts’ goal. But Roberto Mancini’s side held on for a morale-boosting win that confirms at least third place – and an automatic Champions League group slot – ahead of the FA Cup final against Wigan at the weekend.

With that game in mind, City made eight changes from the goalless draw at Swansea, as Micah Richards returned after nearly seven months out injured.

But for a match of relatively little consequence, it was pretty entertaining.

The first half was choc-full of opportunity as West Brom started brightly before City took complete control, going ahead and somehow failing to add to their lead before the break.

The second saw the Baggies fight back, hitting the bar and forcing Joe Hart into a number of saves, but they could not break the hosts down.

Early in the match Romelu Lukaku hammered a long-range drive just wide and headed straight at Joe Hart when he should have scored as the Baggies threatened an upset.

Aleksandar Kolarov was fortunate to stay on the pitch after a high boot into the head of Gabriel Tamas, who suffered a nasty gash but continued after treatment.

City soon passed their way into the mix as Dzeko, Tevez, Rodwell and Milner all went close, with the latter firing wide from close range and forcing keeper Boaz Myhill into a smart save.

Then Tevez rattled the crossbar with a fantastic swerving shot so it was no surprise when City took the lead 10 minutes before the break.

It was a fine goal too, the counter attack starting with an excellent tackle from Samir Nasri on Youssouf Mulumbu and culminating with a superb Dzeko volley off Tevez’s inch-perfect cross.

Rodwell spurned a couple more opportunities while Milner hit the post, but while it looked as if City would get a second it was West Brom who almost drew level just before half-time but for Hart’s excellent rush at the feet of Lukaku.

The second half started in a similar vein to the first, as Lukaku almost sent Markus Rosenberg clean through, with the Sweden striker then hitting the bar with a free-kick, Hart saving well from Billy Jones on the follow-up.

Hart made another fine stop as James Morrison rifled a low drive to the bottom left, while West Brom won – but failed to adequately deliver – a succession of corners.

The pendulum had swung and City were hanging on. They almost added a second against the run of play though, Gabriel Tamas blocking a Rodwell finish, with the former Everton midfielder denied by Myhill on the follow-up.

West Brom were throwing everything at City, including using Billy Jones as an auxiliary strike before Peter Odemwingie and Shane Long were sent on.

Jones should have scored when picked out by Mulumbu but fired straight at an opponent, while Long could have equalised with his first touch, which was to slice his finish wide after Lukaku’s flick sent him scuttling away.

There was a late revival for City as Dzeko and Gareth Barry both forced saves from Myhill, but they were on the counter as the Baggies tried in vain for an equaliser.

City lie second, seven points clear of Chelsea and crucially eight ahead of fourth-placed Arsenal with two games left. West Brom, meanwhile, stay a respectable eighth.
