Van Thang’s goal helps Hai Phong extend V-League reign

A solitary goal scored by Van Thang helped Hai Phong edge out FLC Thanh Hoa 1-0 in the 11th round of the 2016 V-League on May 22.

The match took place at high pace right from the first whistle, with both teams playing offensively as well as creating a number of scoring opportunities on each other’s goals.

As time passed and the match remained scoreless, Hai Phong suddenly cruised ahead thanks to an opener by Van Thang ten minutes prior to the break.

Thanh Hoa defender Ivan Firer carelessly handled the ball in the box, enabling Thang to snatch the ball before producing a powerful strike from ten metres out to open the scoring.

In the second half, the hosts intensified attacks seeking to equalise the score, however, opportunities were wasted by Dinh Tung, Omar, Firer and Quoc Phuong.

The 1-0 score remained unchanged until the end of the game, gifting Hai Phong with three additional points, extending their reign atop the standings with 28 points, nine points above runners-up Becamex Binh Duong.

In other matches, Hanoi T&T and Song Lam Nghe An recorded respective 3-0 wins against QNK Quang Nam and Dong Thap, while Sanna Khanh Hoa BVN crushed Hoang Anh Gia Lai with a score of 4-1.

SHB Da Nang broke no sweat to beat Long An 3-1, while XSKT Can Tho lost 1-2 to Quang Ninh Coal.

Becamex Binh Duong missed the chance to reduce the gap with leaders Hai Phong after being held to a 1-1 draw by Saigon.

Futsal World Cup: Vietnam grouped with Italy, Paraguay, Guatemala

Vietnam are with Italy, Paraguay and Guatemala in Group C of the FIFA Futsal World Cup to be held in Colombia from September 10 to October 1.

Trưởng đoàn ông Trần Anh Tú và HLV ông Bruno Garcia. The draw was held late Thursday Vietnam time.
Of Vietnam’s opponents, Italy, who won a bronze medal in the previous quadrennial event in Thailand, are possibly the toughest.
Guatemala finished third at the 2016 CONCACAF Futsal Championship.
Earlier Vietnam had beaten reigning champion Japan on penalties in an Asian Football Confederation Futsal Championship quarterfinal in February to secure their first-ever ticket to the World Cup.
The team’s head coach, and former Peru coach, Bruno Formoso hoped the qualification would have a positive impact on the country’s long-term development.
“We will continue playing our style in the World Cup and showcase our never-say-die spirit regardless of the opponents. If we do so, fans and spectators can enjoy the games as well as our showing.”
Vietnam play Guatemala on September 11, Paraguay on September 14 and Italy on September 17.

Valbuena, Ben Arfa left out of France Euro 2016 squad

France coach Didier Deschamps named his 23-man squad for Euro 2016 on Thursday (May 12), with both Mathieu Valbuena and Hatem Ben Arfa missing the cut.

mathieu-valbuena-pictured

Valbuena’s season has been overshadowed by the sextape blackmail affair in which he has been a victim and which has seen star striker Karim Benzema of Real Madrid dropped by his country.

The Lyon midfielder has struggled for form and has unsurprisingly been left out of the hosts’ squad for the finals.

“Mathieu has had a very difficult season with injuries and his level of performance has been below what he is capable of doing,” said Deschamps, who announced his squad live on television station TF1’s evening news bulletin.

Ben Arfa had been hopeful of making the squad after relaunching his career at Nice but instead has to settle for a place on the standby list of eight.

Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho was also omitted after being suspended for 30 days by UEFA for failing a drugs test. He tested positive for a fat burner after Liverpool’s Europa League game against Manchester United in March and was given a provisional ban at the end of April.

Despite the absence of Benzema, who has scored 27 goals in 81 caps, France have great strength in depth in attack.

Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud could lead the line while Antoine Griezmann is enjoying a superb season with Atletico Madrid.

Anthony Martial and Dimitri Payet have also enjoyed fine campaigns since moving to the English Premier League.

“Olivier Giroud has scored 25 goals in all competitions, Griezmann even more than that. Anthony Martial is at the same level. I am not calling into question what he (Ben Arfa) has done,” said Deschamps about his choices in attack.

“It is a sporting choice. Hatem Ben Arfa has had a very good season at Nice but other players have had a good season. I had some difficult decisions to make.”

Deschamps must announce his final 23-man squad by UEFA’s May 31 deadline.

France open Euro 2016 against Romania on June 10 before also facing Albania and Switzerland in Group A.

Before that they play friendly matches against Cameroon in Nantes on May 30 and Scotland in Metz on Jun 4.

FIFA names woman as secretary general for first time

FIFA president Gianni Infantino made the surprise announcement in Mexico City that he had chosen 54-year-old Fatma Samoura, an outsider unknown to the football world, to be his deputy at the male-dominated organisation.

FIFA named a Senegalese UN diplomat as its first ever female secretary general on Friday (May 13), a historic move announced at a congress that sought to relegate world football’s corruption crisis to the past.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino made the surprise announcement in Mexico City that he had chosen 54-year-old Fatma Samoura, an outsider unknown to the football world, to be his deputy at the male-dominated organisation.

“The congress of today demonstrates without any shadow of a doubt that FIFA is back on track,” said Infantino, who was elected in February after his predecessor Sepp Blatter was brought down by the scandal.

“I can officially inform you here that the crisis is over and we are all looking forward to a great future,” he said after vowing that FIFA would be “reborn”.

Samoura, who has worked on humanitarian crises with the United Nations for 21 years, is currently based in Nigeria for the UN Development Programme.

“We have to be serious when we say we embrace diversity and we believe in gender equality,” Infantino said, describing Samoura as the “most competent” person for the job, with experience in managing big organisations.

“She will bring a fresh wind to FIFA, somebody from outside, not somebody from inside, not somebody from the past but somebody new.”

Samoura will take her post by mid-June after undergoing an eligibility check administered by an independent review committee.

“Today is a wonderful day for me, and I am honoured to take on the role of FIFA’s secretary general,” Samoura, who has also worked at the World Food Programme, said in a statement.

“I also look forward to bringing my experience in governance and compliance to bear on the important reform work that is already underway at FIFA.”

The former secretary general, Jerome Valcke of France, was sacked in January and banned from football for 12 years over misconduct in television deals and World Cup ticket sales – one of the many scandals that hit FIFA.

Germany’s Markus Kattner had been serving as interim secretary general since then.

INFANTINO: ‘BULLET-PROOF’ CUP SELECTION

Infantino also welcomed the appointment of Canadian soccer federation chief Victor Montagliani as the new president of the North and Central American and Caribbean football confederation (CONCACAF), whose previous three leaders left office under the cloud of corruption allegations.

FIFA officials meeting in the Mexican capital formally implemented governance reforms that were adopted at an extraordinary congress in February.

The measures include term limits, transparency in salaries, reinforcing integrity checks of council members, and renaming the disgraced executive committee as the council and pruning its powers.

The congress also approved a 2015-2018 budget that increases development aid to each football association from US$400,000 (€354,000) to US$1.25 million per year.

FIFA, meanwhile, resumed this week the process to select the host of the 2026 World Cup, which had been frozen since last year over claims of misdeeds in awarding the tournaments to Russia for 2018 and Qatar for 2022.

“After all the issues, or criticisms, or whatever, which happened around the last World Cup bidding process, it is absolutely crucial for FIFA’s credibility that we have a bullet-poof bidding process in place for 2026,” Infantino said.

He noted that human rights requirements will be examined during the process for the first time and that bidders that fail technical requirements will be excluded.

But the scandals keep haunting world football.

On Monday, Infantino’s former boss, Michel Platini, said he will step down as head of European football body UEFA after failing to overturn his ban from all football-related activity over allegations that he received a dubious two million Swiss franc ($2 million, 1.8 million euros) payment from FIFA.

NEW MEMBERS

In other decisions, the congress reinstated Indonesia in international competitions but maintained the suspensions of Kuwait and Benin over government interference in the sport.

FIFA also admitted Gibraltar and the former Serbian province of Kosovo, taking the world body to 211 members and entitling them to participate in 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

Serbia vowed to legally challenge the inclusion of Kosovo, a former province that declared independence in 2008, a decade after a bloody conflict.

FIFA’s executive originally rejected Gibraltar’s bid, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ordered that the congress take a vote on the British territory, which is also claimed by Spain.

Dummy device behind Old Trafford ‘bomb’ scare

A fake bomb left behind following a training exercise was responsible for the abandonment of Sunday’s (May 15) match between Manchester United and Bournemouth at Old Trafford, police said.

the-stretford-end-l-and

Amid a nerve-jangling scare with much of Europe on alert for militant attacks, the device was blown up by army bomb disposal experts after United’s world-famous ground had been evacuated.

The “code red” alert was signalled by police just 20 minutes before the scheduled start of the game between United and Bournemouth.

A club employee found what was described as a mobile phone attached to gas pipes during a routine sweep of the northwest corner of Old Trafford, a source said.

Some players were already on the pitch warming up for the key game and had to be led away. “We’re still in the dressing room, seems we’ll be the last to leave. There’s been nerves and tension,” United midfielder Ander Herrera told Spanish radio.

Fans were taken out of the world famous 75,600 capacity stadium as military bomb disposal experts rushed to the scene. Police with dogs search the whole stadium while the package was blown up.

“Bomb disposal experts carried out controlled explosion at Old Trafford on what is described as incredibly lifelike explosive device,” Greater Manchester Police said on its Twitter account. They added: “Full assessment now concluded and found device wasn’t viable.”

Police said the bomb squad disposed of what is described as an “incredibly lifelike explosive device” but an assessment showed it was “not viable”.

Manchester United tweeted five minutes after the match was supposed to kick off that a “suspect package was found in the North West Quadrant” and said police were inspecting. It later announced that the match was abandoned on police advice.

manu-old-trafford-data

Bournemouth tweeted that the match was abandoned “due to safety fears”, while Manchester police tweeted that the game “has been abandoned, fans are leaving the ground. Please avoid the area if possible.”

Announcements were made on the public address system that security staff should invoke “operation red code”.

Half of the stands at Old Trafford were evacuated and United later confirmed that a suspicious package had been discovered in the Stretford End stand.

Public address announcements instructed supporters in the South and East Stands – including the travelling contingent of Bournemouth fans – to remain in their seats before the game was called off.

The Premier League issued a statement, saying the match was abandoned as a last resort and that it would rearrange the fixture as soon as possible.

epl-on-old-trafford-bomb-data

Army specialists were called and police later announced that “a controlled explosion has just been carried out within the stadium by bomb disposal experts at Old Trafford”.

SECOND INCIDENT

It is the second time in less than a week that United have been involved in a security alert. Their game at West Ham United on Tuesday was delayed after their team bus was attacked by home fans.

More than two hours after the game was abandoned, a ring of police and stewards still had the stadium cordoned off. Traffic in all directions around the stadium was gridlocked.

It was a dramatic end to a day in which United supporters had hoped to see their team win and finish in fourth place.

But, with all other fixtures kicking off as planned, Manchester City’s 1-1 draw at Swansea City meant United, barring a freakishly huge win over Bournemouth when Sunday’s abandoned fixture is played, would miss out on qualification for next season’s Champions League.

LOGISTICAL PROBLEM

Officials told Bournemouth players and management that they could return home as there was no possibility of the game being played within 24 hours of Sunday’s abandoned fixture, but they will now be back at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

“Manchester United treated us very well,” Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe told the Bournemouth Echo. “We decided to come back to Bournemouth because there was no sign of the game being played the next day.”

Sunday’s abandonment was especially disappointing for Moses, a United fan from Sierra Leone, who had been hoping to watch his first match at Old Trafford.

But members of the Manchester United Supporters Trust, hearing of his plight, clubbed together to pay for him to stay another week in England and attend next week’s FA Cup final against Crystal Palace.

“Sadly they postponed the match – I was so sad about that – but they organised so I can stay another week and I’m excited about that!,” Moses told the BBC.

Although Bournemouth are safe from the threat of relegation and cannot qualify for Europe, Sunday’s match had significance for the Cherries.

Bournemouth, still in 16th place, were looking to complete a league double over United, with the amount of prize money they receive dependent on where they finish in the table.

Sporting Gijon’s win relegates Getafe, Rayo Vallecano

Madrid’s representation in La Liga was reduced from four to two teams for next season as Getafe and Rayo Vallecano were relegated, while Sporting Gijon saved themselves with a 2-0 win over Villarreal on Sunday (May 15).

villarreal-s-midfielder

Getafe were the only side with matters in their own hands but succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at Real Betis to end their 12-year stay in the top flight.

That handed Sporting the chance to keep themselves up and they duly obliged as goals from Jony and Sergio Alvarez left coach and former Barcelona defender Abelardo Fernandez in tears on the touchline.

Rayo beat already-relegated Levante 3-1 thanks to goals from Pablo Hernandez, Roberto Trashorras and Miku, but victory couldn’t extend their longest ever stay in La Liga of five seasons as they fell a point short of Sporting.

Sunday’s La Liga round-up

Sporting Gijon secured their top-flight status with a 2-0 win over Villarreal at El Molinon on the final day of the season on Sunday night.

1022

The hosts took the lead through Jony after just eight minutes and a second goal from Sergio Fernandez Alvarez 11 minutes from time made certain of the three points, which took Rojiblancos up to 16th place, one point clear of the relegation zone. The Yellow Submarine finished fourth.

Gijon’s victory condemned Rayo Vallecano to the drop, despite them beating rock-bottom Levante 3-1 at Campo de Vallecas.

First-half goals from Pablo (12′) and Jozabed (23′) gave Los Franjirrojos hope of avoiding relegation, before Verza pulled one back for the visitors from the penalty spot on the hour mark.

Miku’s 74th-minite goal wrapped up the win for the hosts to halt a three-match losing streak, but it was not enough to save them from going down as Paco Jemez’s side ended 18th in the standings, one point adrift of safety.

Elsewhere, Getafe joined Rayo and Les Granotes in taking the plunge to the second tier of Spanish football after they lost 2-1 to Real Betis at Benito Villamarin.

After a goalless first half, the hosts took the lead through German Pezzella on 56 minutes and a penalty from Ruben Castro 17 minutes later doubled their advantage, while Alvaro Medran halved the deficit six minutes from time.

The Azulones ended 19th, failing to secure their safety by three points, with Betis clinching 10th and a top-half finish.

Meanwhile, Espanyol improved on last season’s 15th-placed finish by two positions after they ran out 4-2 victors over Eibar at Cornella-El Prat.

A brace apiece from Gerard Moreno (13′, 76′) and Marco Asensio (32′, 66′) gave the hosts a comfortable win, with Borja (57′ pen) and Sergi Enrich (90′) getting on the scoresheet for the 14th-placed Armeros, who finished two spots lower than last term.

Earlier in the day, Malaga brought their campaign to a close with a convincing 4-1 victory over Las Palmas at La Rosaleda.

A penalty from Charles in first-half stoppage time gave the hosts a 2-1 lead at the break after Duje Cop’s 26th-minute opener had been cancelled out by Los Amarillos striker Willian Jose five minutes later.

Los Boquerones extended their lead through Christian Atsu six minutes from time and Charles completed his brace soon afterwards to wrap up the three points and keep them in eighth spot, while Quique Setien’s side finished 11th in the standings.

Sunday’s results:

Malaga 4-1 Las Palmas

Espanyol 4-2 Eibar

Rayo Vallecano 3-1 Levante

Real Betis 2-1 Getafe

Sporting Gijon 2-0 Villarreal

Chelsea end Adidas kit deal six years early

Chelsea have ended their sponsorship deal with Adidas six years early in order to enter a new contract with a rival kit manufacturer, the German sportswear giant announced on Wednesday (May 11).

adidas-have-been-making

The deal, reported to have been worth £300 million (US$434.1 million) over 10 years, had been due to end on Jun 30, 2023, but will now conclude on the same date next year.

Adidas have been making Chelsea’s kits since 2006. Chelsea have agreed to pay Adidas compensation.

“Chelsea Football Club and adidas AG announced today that they have mutually agreed to terminate their existing partnership agreement prematurely,” Adidas said in a statement.

“This mutual agreement on early termination of the agreement will allow Chelsea Football Club to enter a new equipment agreement with a competitor of adidas AG.

“As compensation for the early termination of the contract, the adidas Group will receive a payment from Chelsea Football Club in 2017 that will already positively impact the Group’s net income this year.

“Adidas AG wishes to expressly thank Chelsea Football Club for their always professional and successful collaboration, which has included, among other successes, the time of their UEFA Champions League title in 2012 as well as two Premier League titles.”

Chelsea’s 10-year contract with Adidas, signed in June 2013, was the biggest shirt deal in Premier League history.

It was surpassed a year later by the reported £750 million deal that Manchester United struck with Adidas, who also make the kits of Southampton, Sunderland, Swansea City and West Bromwich Albion.

The identity of Chelsea’s next kit manufacturer has not been revealed.
