Vietnam eliminated from football World Cup

The door to the 2018 World Cup officially closed on Vietnam after they succumbed to a 0-1 defeat against Iraq in their last Group F clash of the second World Cup qualifying round, held on neutral ground in Tehran, Iran on March 29.

Thua Iraq 0-1, Việt Nam chia tay vòng loại World Cup 2018

Ahead of the match, Vietnam stood third in Group F with seven points, just two points behind Iraq in second place. A win was needed for Vietnam to enhance their possibility of advancing into the third World Cup qualifying round as one of the four best runner-up teams.
However, Iraq proved too strong for Vietnam to overcome. The Southwest Asian team played offensively right from the start, forcing Vietnam to focus on defence throughout the majority of the match.

The solitary goal was scored for Iraq by substitute Mohannad Abdul Raheem in the first minute of first-half injury time with a shot deflected off his knee from close range.

The narrow victory against Vietnam helped Iraq safeguard their runner-up position in Group F with 12 points, which was also enough to secure them a berth in the third qualification for the World Cup as one of the four second-placed teams, alongside Syria, the United Arab Emirates and China.

Earlier, Group F leader Thailand became eligible for the last World Cup qualifying stage along with Saudi Arabia (Group A leader), Australia (Group B leader), Qatar (Group C leader), Iran (Group D leader), Japan (Group E leader), the Republic of Korea (Group G leader) and Uzbekistan (Group H leader).

Despite failing to carry on with the World Cup qualification campaign, Vietnam has qualified for the third round of the 2019 Asian Cup as the third-placed team of Group F.

The third qualification round, scheduled to take place from March 28, 2017 to March 27, 2018, will bring together 24 teams competing in six groups of four, with the top two teams from each group to be awarded a place in the 2019 Asian

Garde leaves Aston Villa by mutual consent

French manager Remi Garde has left Aston Villa by mutual consent, the Premier League basement sitters said on Tuesday (Mar 29).

“The Club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Remi for all his efforts during a difficult period and wish him well in the future,” said a club statement on the Villa website.

Eric Black has taken over as acting manager until a full-time appointment can be made.

Villa started the season with Tim Sherwood as manager but he was sacked in October after losing six consecutive matches, with the team winning just one of their opening 10 league games of the season.

Garde was appointed in November on a three-and-a-half-year deal, but has been unable to prevent their slide towards relegation.

Villa sit bottom of the Premier League, 12 points from safety and nine behind their nearest rivals with just seven games remaining. Villa won only two league games under Garde’s stewardship.

Women’s team drop to 35th in FIFA ranking for first quarter

The Vietnamese women’s football team slipped six notches to 35th position in the latest women’s world ranking for the first quarter of 2016 announced by the International Football Federation (FIFA) on March 25.

Vietnam’s drop on the world ladder came as no surprise as the national team performed unsuccessfully at the third qualifying round for the 2016 Rio Olympics, which was held in Osaka, Japan earlier this month.

Playing against Asia’s strongest opponents, including Australia, Japan, China, the Republic of Korea and the Democratic Republic of Korea, proved to be an extremely tough challenge for the team coached by Mai Duc Chung.

Losing all five matches, Vietnam lost 30 points and now stands at 35th place in the world rankings with 1,620 points.

The team’s ranking in Asia was also considerably affected as they dropped one notch to seventh, behind Australia (fifth in the world, 2,014 points), Japan (seventh in the world, 1,983 points), the DPRK (ninth, 1,952 points), China (12th, 1,918 points), the ROK (17th, 1,837 points) and Thailand (32nd, 1,645 points).

The US remained firmly on top of the world with 2,174 points, followed by Germany with 2,117 points, France with 2,068 points and England with 2,033 points.

Vietnam qualifies for Futsal World Cup: A dream come true

The World Cup dream of Vietnamese football has been realised by the national futsal team, a stunning achievement making home fans proud and taking international observers from surprise to admiration.

74ea4f4fd8c14b25a0d18c90ceef47af

However, a lot of work remains for the team so that the upcoming trip to Colombia this September will not be a mere sight-seeing journey.

Vietnam hosted the AFC Futsal Championship for the first time in 2005. It was also the debut of the sport in the country, and it came as little surprise that Vietnam was disqualified in the preliminary stage. In the next five tournaments, Vietnam reached the AFC finals just once (in 2010), while failing to break through the qualification round in four other editions (2006, 2007, 2008 and 2012).

The team’s poor international performance at that time made them little known to local fans. Information about domestic futsal competitions could only be found in the brief sport news category, with several clubs like Thai Son Bac and Thai Son Nam.

Vietnamese futsal has begun to draw more attention from domestic media as well as football lovers since the national team, as the host team, brilliantly made it through to the quarterfinals of the 2014 AFC Championship.

In 2015, Vietnamese futsal continued to hit additional milestones as Thai Son Nam excelled beyond expectation, winning the overall bronze medal at the AFC Futsal Clubs Championship in Iran. The same year, the Vietnamese futsal team officially booked a ticket to the 2016 AFC Championship Finals after finishing among the top four at the AFF Futsal Championship in Bangkok, Thailand, which also functioned as the qualification tournament for the 2016 AFC finals.

From a little known sport, futsal has now become a focus across the country. Local fans, who are used to watching football matches on grass, have been keeping a close eye on futsal players “burning themselves” on indoor pitch.

After the stunning victory against Japan’s futsal team, Vietnamese futsal flooded newspapers in Vietnam as well as social networks. The historic feat of a small team invested in by Tran Anh Tu and coached by Spanish Bruno Garcia is even more impressive considering Vietnam’s indoor football stems from an amateur background, and has only been organized as a professional sport for just over a decade.

Vietnamese futsal players always demonstrated the fighting spirit of warriors in each of their matches at the 2016 AFC Championship. Despite showing progress day by day, Vietnamese futsal is still far off from the remaining four World Cup teams of the Asian zone – Thailand, Australia, Uzbekistan and Iran. However, futsal has developed very quickly and gradually overcome the other sports to which attention was paid in the past. The national futsal team coursed through the group-stage qualification of the 2016 AFC Futsal Championship with two wins and one loss before beating Japan 2-1 in a tense penalty shootout after a 4-4 draw in the quarterfinals to secure an official 2016 World Cup slot, granted to each of the four semifinalists and the winner of play-off matches among the four losers of the quarterfinals.

After this incredible feat, Vietnamese futsal is sure to find a place in the hearts of local fans, and it is time the sport received adequate investment and attention. Despite being an indoor event, the futsal players’ victory still has a huge meaning and value contributing to promoting Vietnam to international friends and functioning as a lesson of experience for their football colleagues in fulfilling their long-standing dreams.

Small-field football (futsal) is not a small game. If success can be found in futsal, we can better prepare for a bigger game – large-field football – in which there still remains numerous limitations for both the national team and the country’s top-tier league, the V-League.

Milner to captain England against the Netherlands

Liverpool midfielder James Milner will captain England for the first time in Tuesday’s home friendly with the Netherlands, the Football Association announced on Monday (Mar 28).

liverpool-s-midfielder

The 30-year-old, capped 57 times, takes over from Chelsea centre-back Gary Cahill, who stood in for injured regular skipper Wayne Rooney in Saturday’s 3-2 victory over world champions Germany in Berlin.

With Cahill dropping to the bench for the game against Holland, the last England fixture before manager Roy Hodgson names his squad for Euro 2016 on May 12, Milner has inherited the captain’s armband.

“It’s great he has the opportunity to play tomorrow and to do it as captain of his country,” Hodgson told reporters while sitting next to Milner during a press conference at England’s team hotel in Watford, north of London.

“There’s no doubt that he’s versatile. We were speaking the other day and James gave me a long list of positions he’s played. There’s not many he’s not played. We’ve always known James is a very, very good midfield player.”

Asked what it meant to him, Milner replied: “Everything. Growing up, you’re desperate to put on that England shirt. You’re scoring goals for England in your back garden. “To get the chance to lead your country out is a massive honour and something you’ll never forget.”

Hodgson also revealed that Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge will start against the Dutch, having missed the whole of England’s Euro 2016 qualifying campaign due to a succession of injuries. “Daniel Sturridge will come into the team,” he said. “We’re pleased to welcome him back after his long lay-off.”

Hodgson expressed sympathy for Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland, who will miss the Euro after it was revealed that he will be out for around three months with a fractured ankle sustained against Germany.

“To get your chance against Germany and fracture your ankle in that way, it’s a devastating blow,” Hodgson said.

“All of us felt enormous sympathy for him, and empathy too. But he was very stoic. He said to me, ‘I’ll come back stronger. This won’t affect my career in any way.’ Our best wishes are with him. We’re all going to miss him because we were hoping he was going to be a part of it.”

Vietnam to face Iraq in joint cup

Although the chances of Vietnam reaching the final round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup/2019 Asian Cup joint qualifiers are slim, Vietnam will try to beat Iraq in the final match of the event’s second qualifying round to be held in Iran today, according to Vietnamese coach Nguyễn Hữu Thắng.

vietnam45151318PM

Vietnam’s 4-1 victory over Chinese Taipei on March 24 is a driving force for the team in their match with Iraq. Meanwhile, Iraq has had a change in coaching. The team’s coach, Yahya Alwan, resigned following the 2-2 draw with Thailand on March 24. Abdul Ghani Shahad took charge of the Iraqi team.

Vietnam now have seven points after five games, standing third in Group F. Thailand took the lead with 14 points. Iraq came second with nine points, whereas Chinese Taipei remained at the bottom with zero points.

The group winners and four best runners-up (12 teams total) will advance to the 2019 AFC Asian Cup finals and the final qualifying round for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The next best 24 teams from the preliminary stage of the joint qualifiers will compete in a separate competition for the remaining slots (12 slots or 11 slots plus one slot for the host) in the 24-team 2019 Asian Cup.

If Iraq beat Vietnam, the team will likely be one of four best runners-up to advance to the event’s next round.

If Vietnam beat Iraq, the team will rank second in the group, but the chances of qualifying for the next round depend on many factors. Other group runners-up such as Oman, China and North Korea must lose for the Vietnamese team to advance.

Before the match takes place, players of the two teams will wear black bands on their arms and hold a moment of silence in memory of the recent terrorist bomb attack in Iraq on March 25.

To prepare for the match, Vietnam were presented at Iran on Saturday. They had several light training sessions at their hotel and practised at the 8,000-seat Ghavamin Stadium yesterday. The match will be run by Australian coach Peter Green.

Butland faces Euro exit after fracturing ankle

England goalkeeper Jack Butland fractured his ankle in Saturday’s 3-2 victory over Germany in Berlin, casting a doubt over the Stoke City player’s hopes of making Euro 2016.

stoke-city-s-goalkeeper

The 23-year-old, standing in for injured first-choice keeper Joe Hart, was hurt just before half-time on Saturday and was replaced by Fraser Forster.

“Today’s scan revealed I’ve fractured my ankle, absolutely devastated! I’ll be doing everything I can to get back fit as soon as I can,” Butland tweeted on Sunday.

Forster is likely to start against the Netherlands at Wembley on Tuesday with back-up from Burnley’s Tom Heaton.

With Euro 2016 starting on June 10, Butland’s place in the squad will be in doubt as will the rest of his season in the Premier League.

“Goalkeeper Jack Butland will miss Tuesday night’s fixture against the Netherlands at Wembley Stadium after fracturing his ankle,” said a statement from the Football Association.

“The Stoke City man sustained the injury in the first half of Saturday’s 3-2 victory over Germany in Berlin and has now returned home.”

Hanoi T&T claim national U19 football title for third time

Hanoi T&T were crowned as national U19 football champions for the third time after defeating Viettel 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out in the final match on March 27. Hà Nội T&T đoạt chức vô địch
The Hanoi derby between the two leading youth clubs took place in a tense atmosphere as both teams possessed lineups of quality players.

Despite a number of scoring opportunities created during the first half, it was not until the 41st minute that Viettel were put ahead with Hoang Minh’s opener from close range.

Viettel could have preserved their advantage and secured the overall victory, however due to goalkeeper Thanh Tung’s mistake in the 74th minute taking down Thanh Chung in the goals, Hanoi was presented with a penalty shot on goal.

Tuan Hai did not miss the golden chance to equalise the score for the T&T team, thereby forcing the match to be decided on penalties.

The penalty shootout saw Viettel goalie Thanh Tung’s unsuccessful performance as he was unable to block any shots on goal by the Hanoi team. Meanwhile, Hanoi keeper Do Sy Huy brilliantly saved the fifth shot on goal by Trong Dai, securing the 5-4 win and the trophy for Hanoi T&T.

With the 2016 title, Hanoi T&T have become the first team in history to win the National U19 Championship three times, after their victories in 2011 and 2014. Coincidentally, Hanoi’s three crowns have all been secured via penalty shootouts.

The T&T team’s joy was multiplied as their goalkeeper Do Sy Huy and striker Pham Tuan Hai were respectively named the best goalkeeper and top scorer (six goals). Meanwhile, Viettel striker Nguyen Hoang Duc was voted as the most valuable player of the tournament.

Maresca regrets return to Serie A

Veteran Palermo midfielder Enzo Maresca has conceded that returning to Serie A four years ago was the biggest mistake of his career

1024x534

The Italian made his professional debut back in 1998 with West Brom, where he spent two years before being brought back to his homeland by Juventus.

Maresca won the Scudetto in his second season with the Bianconeri but was then sold to Fiorentina in 2004, while he also had spells with Sevilla and Malaga in Spain, as well as Olympiakos in Greece.

The 36-year-old, who helped Los Rojiblancos claim back-to-back UEFA Cups and the Copa del Rey, opted to join Sampdoria in 2012 and after four years back home, he says the Italian top flight has not moved along with the times.

When asked in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport what decision he regretted most in football, Maresca replied: “Returning to Italy [after playing for Sevilla].

“I did it because Ciro Ferrara wanted me at Sampdoria, but I found a country that had made no progress. It seems the presidents, coaches and politicians don’t age. There is no change in generation.

“I played in Spain for six years and I think I only saw four or five presidents on TV, however, it seems there is a race to be seen on TV here in Italy.”
