Dutch legend Cruyff dies aged 68

Johan Cruyff, one of soccer’s greatest players and most influential and visionary coaches, died aged 68 on Thursday after a five-month battle with lung cancer.

His death was announced on his website and soon after by the De Telegraaf newspaper, for whom he wrote a weekly column that was often controversial but always eagerly anticipated.

An ex-smoker who had heart surgery in 1991, Cruyff joined Ajax Amsterdam as a long-haired teenager before emerging as one of the world’s greats in the early 1970s.

He helped Ajax Amsterdam win three European Cups in a row from 1971-73 and also named European Footballer of the Year in 1971, 1973 and 1974.

Born Hendrik Johannes Cruyff, he joined Barcelona for a then world record transfer fee of $2.0 million, and it was Barcelona that would later define his coaching career, helping the Catalan club to win their first La Liga title in nearly 15 years in 1974.

He was also a key player in the great Netherlands team that reached the 1974 World Cup final when, for the first time, during the tournament a global audience saw him perform the now-famous “Cruyff turn” the movement in which the player with the ball plays it behind their own leg before swerving away in the direction of the ball.

The Dutch also got to the World Cup final but lost again in 1978, this time without Cruyff who had quit the national side, saying years later he walked away after an armed kidnap attempt.

Following stints at Los Angeles Aztecs and Washington Diplomats in the old NASL, then Levante in Spain, Cruyff returned to Ajax before ending his playing career at their bitter rivals Feyenoord in 1984.

In 1999, he was voted European Player of the Century while he is often bracketed alongside Brazil’s Pele and Argentina’s Diego Maradona as the three best players ever to grace the sport.

The Barca ‘Dream Team’ Cruyff coached won four straight La Liga titles between 1991 and 1994 and beat Sampdoria 1-0 for the club’s maiden European Cup triumph in 1992.

The possession-based playing style Cruyff promoted, with an emphasis on relentless attack, has been widely copied and is credited with underpinning Barca’s subsequent successes, as well as those of the Spanish national team.

Former England captain Gary Lineker, who played under Cruyff at Barcelona, summed up the Dutchman’s contribution by saying on Twitter: “Football has lost a man who did more to make the beautiful game beautiful than anyone in history.”

Cruyff had announced last October that he was suffering from lung cancer but continued to write his newspaper column and earlier this month travelled to Israel to visit his son Jordi, who is technical director at Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Only last month he said he was “2-0 up in the first half” of his battle against lung cancer. Poignantly that turned out to be one of the last public statements made by the man whose footballing pronouncements were eagerly sought after by soccer fans around the globe.

He died surrounded by friends and family at home in Barcelona, his website added.

His death prompted Dutch radio and television stations to suspend regular programming, with Ronald de Boer, another Dutch international who played at Barcelona, declaring: “He was the best footballer we ever had.”

Former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola said: “RIP @JohanCruyff, a genius, a legend and the man who changed the mentality of the @FCBarcelona.”

Vietnam Professional Football (VPF) will coordinate with Vietnam Sports Hospital and the Forensic Science Institute to conduct the tests, it said at a press conference in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday.
Accordingly, in each V.League match, each team will have two players chosen randomly to have their urine samples tested. That means a total of 28 players from 14 teams will be tested every round.
Players tested positive for drugs will face punishment from the league’s organizer, VPF said without elaborating.
The organizer also said it has bought insurance for players and referees for the first time, with total premium fees of VND300 million (US$13,400) for players and VND200 million for referees. The move aims to ease financial burdens in cases of injuries.
It also cooperated with the Switzerland-based sport data analyzer Sportradar to detect shady matches to tackle match-fixing.
From the third round on March 5, V.League referees were also equipped with vanishing spray to be used as temporary marker for free kicks.

Wu Chu Ching scored early on in the seventh minute giving the visitors the lead, but Vietnam soon levelled the score just one minute later with a goal from captain Nguyen Cong Vinh, who scored his second goal in the second half’s first extra minute to seal a comfortable victory for the hosts.

The two other goals were scored by striker Nguyen Van Toan in the 29th and 42nd minutes.

Vietnam, currently ranked 146th on the FIFA world rankings, went to the match on March 24 at My Dinh National Stadium with one win, one draw and two losses in hand while underdog Chinese Taipei, which currently rank 181st, lost all four previous matches.

Vietnam are scheduled to take on Iraq, whom Vietnam drew with 1-1 in October last year, in an away match on March 29 at Shahid Dastgerdi Stadium in Iran.

In Group F, Vietnam are ranked third behind Thailand and Iraq. Thailand have advanced to the third round of the 2018 World Cup qualification with a total of 14 points after six matches, 5 points higher than the runners-up Iraq, who have played five matches.

Ronaldo misses penalty as Bulgaria shock Portugal

Brazilian-born Marcelinho scored on his Bulgaria debut while Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty for Portugal as the visitors pulled off a shock 1-0 friendly win over the Euro 2016 finalists on Friday.

Marcelinho, born in a small town in the Amazon region of Brazil and making his first international appearance at the age of 31, struck in the 20th minute of a game almost totally dominated by Portugal.

The hosts were repeatedly foiled by Bulgaria goalkeeper Vladislav Stoyanov who capped an outstanding display by diving to his right to save Ronaldo’s penalty, awarded for handball, in the 69th minute.

Ronaldo, who has missed three penalties this season for Real Madrid, also turned the rebound wide.

His unhappy night began when he fired over with the goal at his mercy from an unmarked position in the seventh minute.

The former FIFA World Player of the Year also had four attempts at goal from long-range free kicks, two hitting the wall and the others forcing saves from Stoyanov.

The visiting keeper made six stops in the first 10 minutes alone, including one excellent effort denying Nani, as Portugal threatened a goal spree.

Bulgaria then went in front when Marcelinho, who qualified for them after spending five years with Ludogorets Razgrad, forced his way past two defenders and poked the ball past Anthony Lopes.

After that the game became predictable as Portugal poured forward and played plenty of neat football around the Bulgaria area but either lacked the killer pass or were foiled by Stoyanov.

The goalkeeper completed his evening’s work by making a superb stop to turn away a close-range header by a frustrated Ronaldo with five minutes left.

“We are not satisfied with the result. We started brilliantly, in the first 15 minutes, we were strong, consistent, the goalkeeper make some fantastic saves and then we lost some concentration,” said Portugal coach Fernando Santos.

Manchester United announce China tour in July

Manchester United will tour China in July as part of their preparations for the 2016-17 season, the English Premier League giants announced on Tuesday (Mar 22).

mu

United will spend eight days in the country and play two matches, with fixture dates, venues, opposition teams and ticket details to be announced in the coming days.

It will be United’s 11th trip to China, where the club estimates it has 107 million supporters. “Manchester United has strong historical links with China and we are very proud of our relationship and of our fans throughout the country,” United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward said in a statement.

“A total of almost 500,000 supporters have attended previous games during our visits to China and we have always enjoyed exceptional support in the country, so naturally it is something that everybody is very much looking forward to this summer.”

United’s most recent game in China was a fixture against Kitchee SC in July 2013, which was attended by a sell-out 40,000 crowd. China has become a key commercial battleground for the Premier League’s leading teams.

A Chinese consortium bought a 13 per cent stake in the parent group of United’s cross-town rivals Manchester City in December, two months after Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the club during a state tour.

On Tuesday, City announced a new regional partnership with sports activity brand SoccerWorld, which will see coaches from City visit China twice a year to train local coaches.

Colombia sink Bolivia with injury time strike in World Cup qualifier

An injury-time goal from Edwin Cardona saw Colombia snatch a dramatic 3-2 win over Bolivia on Thursday to breathe life into their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign.

colombia-s-james

Star-studded Colombia looked to have squandered a straightforward victory after Bolivia fought back from 2-0 down to level at 2-2 heading into stoppage time at the Estadio Hernando Siles.

But just when the Bolivians were preparing to celebrate a well-earned point, Colombia swept forward. Teenage winger Marlos Moreno broke down the left flank and picked out Mexico-based midfielder Cardona, who rifled a low shot into the bottom right-hand corner.

The victory was only Colombia’s second in five matches so far in South America’s marathon qualifying competition for places at the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia.

The Colombians are now on seven points alongside Chile, Paraguay and Brazil, who all have matches on Thursday and Friday.

Colombia made a dream start after goals from Real Madrid star James Rodriguez and AC Milan striker Carlos Bacca gave them a 2-0 lead after 41 minutes.

However Bolivia were thrown a lifeline when Brazilian referee Wilton Pereira Sampaio harshly adjudged that Jeison Murillo had handballed inside the area early in the second half. Juan Carlos Arce duly stepped up to blast the penalty into the top corner and Bolivia were back in the game.

It got better in the 62nd minute when Alejandro Chumacero lashed in the equaliser for 2-2.

Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina kept Colombia in the game with a string of saves as Bolivia pressed for a winner. But with time running down, Colombia counter-attacked and Cardona provided the final twist.

Poland edge Serbia in international friendly

Jakub Blaszczykowski grabbed the only goal as Poland displayed their Euro 2016 credentials with a 1-0 friendly win over Serbia on Wednesday (Mar 23), while Croatia beat Israel 2-0.

croatia-s-midfielder

The Poles beat world champions Germany during an impressive qualifying campaign to help book their ticket to France, and they came through a tough test against a strong Serbia outfit in Poznan.

The visitors started well enough and looked solid with the likes of Branislav Ivanovic and Aleksandar Kolarov at the back, but their failure to clear a low cross in the 28th minute gifted Poland the breakthrough.

The ball dropped perfectly for Blaszczykowski, who cut across his right-footed volley to send the ball spinning into the corner past Serbia goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic.

Blaszczykowski has struggled to break into the Fiorentina starting team since joining on loan from Borussia Dortmund last summer, and a first goal for club or country since January could do wonders for his confidence.

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski, who top scored in Euro 2016 qualifying with 13 goals in 10 games, failed to hit the net for the first time in seven internationals and was withdrawn in the second half for Lukasz Teodorczyk.

Poland will again face Germany in the Euro 2016 group stages on June 16 at the Stade de France in Paris, while they will also take on neighbours Ukraine and Northern Ireland in Group C.

Croatia made it four wins in a row since Ante Cacic took over as manager by easing past Israel in Osijek. The hosts forged ahead in only the fourth minute when Inter Milan midfielder Ivan Perisic showed excellent technique to lash in a volley from club teammate Marcelo Brozovic’s cross.

Brozovic, 23, turned goalscorer half an hour later, tapping home from close range after Mario Mandzukic’s shot had bounced off the post. That was a fourth international goal for the winger, who is on loan at Inter from Dinamo Zagreb, and he looks set to play a key part for Croatia at this summer’s Euros.

With the result all but decided by half-time, former Lokomotiv Zagreb coach Cacic took the opportunity to give six of his substitutes a run-out, including Barcelona teenager Alen Halilovic, who has impressed on loan at Sporting Gijon this season to stake a late claim for selection.

The victory continues a good run of form for the Croatians, who are part of a tricky Group D for Euro 2016 alongside defending champions Spain, Czech Republic and Turkey.

Romania, who will take on hosts France in the group stages, scraped past Lithuania 1-0 in Giurgiu. The Romanians, who finished top of their qualifying group, are now unbeaten in 16 matches.

Steaua Bucharest midfielder Nicolae Stanciu came off the bench at half-time to make his international debut, before drilling in from long range with 25 minutes left to light up an otherwise drab match and send a message to coach Anghel Iordanescu.

Slovenia 1 Macedonia 0

Romania 1 Lithuania 0

Gibraltar 0 Liechtenstein 0

Poland 1 Serbia 0

Gerrard open to offers despite dream of Carragher reunion

Steven Gerrard dreams of a Liverpool reunion with fellow Anfield icon Jamie Carragher, but the LA Galaxy midfielder admits he would look elsewhere if he doesn’t get the chance to return to his former club.

former-liverpool-football

Gerrard’s contract with LA Galaxy expires in eight months and the ex-Liverpool and England captain has thought a lot about teaming up with Carragher in some sort of coaching capacity with the Reds.

Having shared 16 years in the Reds’ first team with Carragher, as well as several years before that at the club’s academy, Gerrard remains hopeful of reuniting with his close friend back at their spiritual home.

“I’ve imagined it a lot. Jamie’s knowledge of the game is superb. I know the amount of time and effort he puts into the work that he does now, also how much he loved the game when I played with him,” Gerrard said in an interview with the website for men’s fashion brand MR PORTER.

“I think we’ll both work for the club again at some point during the rest of our lives. When that will be, I don’t know. Will that be together? I’m not sure. Would I work with Jamie Carragher again for Liverpool? Of course I would, without a doubt, but it’s for other people to make that decision.

“It goes without saying that the club’s in our hearts and it’s difficult if the club come calling but we’ve other things going on at the moment – it’s not as if we’re begging for it or desperate for it – but they know where we are.

“When I retire from football I am going to be available for people to offer me roles if they feel I’m one of the candidates. Would I go for another role in the game if any offers (from Liverpool) didn’t come my way? Yeah I would.”

While Gerrard would relish joining Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp’s staff, the 35-year-old does not yet know if he will be asked to stay on in California or whether there is one last club to play for somewhere else before his focuses on coaching.

“Physically I could play in the MLS for this season and next, 100 per cent for sure,” he added. “Am I going to do that? Do I want to do that? Am I going to be offered the chance to do that? I don’t know, we’ll have to wait and see.

“I’m at a little bit at a crossroads at the moment, what to do, whether to call it a day at the end of the season, or whether maybe to do one more, but we’ll have to wait and see.

“The season finishes here in November; maybe some football offers might come my way, maybe some coaching roles will come my way. I’m doing my coaching badges and I’m on my A licence as we speak. Hopefully I’m going to be in a position to consider some offers very seriously come Christmas.”
