Guardiola welcomes back trio ahead of Juventus clash

Bayern Munich’s injury crisis should ease when key players return on Saturday as Pep Guardiola’s Bundesliga leaders chase a club record with one eye on next week’s Champions League clash at Juventus.

mario-goetze-left-returns

World Cup winner Mario Goetze, winger Franck Ribery and defender Serdar Tasci are all set to play in the German league match against Darmstadt at Munich’s Allianz Arena with Bayern eight points clear.

It eases the pressure on Guardiola, who did not have a single fit centre-back for last Sunday’s 3-1 league win at Augsburg with Javi Martinez, Holger Badstuber, Jerome Boateng and Medhi Benatia all sidelined.

Goetze is set to return after four and a half months out with an adductor injury, while Ribery is set to end his misery on the sidelines after just two matches since last April.

Germany international Tasci is set to play his first game in the famous red shirt after signing on loan from Spartak Moscow until the end of the season as cover at centre-back.

All three are “ready and fit. I do not know how many minutes they will play. But it’s good news for us, that we have these players on the pitch,” said Guardiola.

If Bayern stop Darmstadt from scoring, it will give the hosts a new club record of six consecutive clean sheets dating back to November.

Guardiola insists they have almost exclusively “talked about Darmstadt” and only “a bit about Juventus” in training this week.

The 45-year-old will quit Bayern at the end of the season to coach Manchester City and after three years in Munich, he is eager to sign off with the Champions League — the one trophy which has eluded him so far in Bavaria.

Bayern’s last 16, first leg, clash against last season’s Champions League finalists next Tuesday is a key test and the Spaniard is undecided as to whether he will rotate his squad for Darmstadt with one eye on Turin.

The stats speak for themselves as Bayern have won four, and drawn the other, of their five league games against Darmstadt, who have never won in Munich.

Meanwhile, Goezte admits he is uncomfortable with any comparisons to superstar Lionel Messi after Joachim Loew’s words to him during the World Cup final have become part of German football folklore.

“Show the world that you’re better than Messi,” Loew told Goetze on the sidelines in sending him on as a replacement in the 2014 World Cup final in Rio de Janeiro before the 23-year-old scored the winning goal against Messi’s Argentina.

But Goetze has failed to hold down a regular spot at Bayern since joining them for the 2013/14 season.

“The public expectation definitely shot up. When you reach a certain level, it’s often expected that you do even better,” Goetze said about the pressure on him.

“The fact there are also phases when things don’t go so well is only human.

“I feel good, I am fit and in good spirits,” he added ahead of his expected comeback on Saturday, having started just four Bundesliga games for Bayern this season.

FIFA welcomes Vietnam to Futsal World Cup

FIFA Director of Competitions Colin Smith has congratulated the Vietnam Futsal team on its good performance at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Futsal Championship, and welcomed it to the 2016 Futsal World Cup.

f

The FIFA Futsal World Cup is a 5-a-side indoor version of associated football held every four years.

Vietnam knocked out reigning champion Japan in the quarter-final round of the AFC Futsal Championship on February 17 in Uzbekistan, gaining an official ticket to the Futsal World Cup to be held in Colombia from September 10 to October 1.

In his congratulatory letter sent to the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), Collin affirmed that Vietnam’s victory was a historic moment for the national team securing its first-ever qualification for a FIFA Futsal World Cup.

As scheduled, in early March, FIFA will send information related to the competition to the VFF.

A plan on the official draw for the competition will be announced in April.

Man United defeated in Denmark, Valencia give Neville boost

A miserable season for Louis van Gaal and Manchester United took a new turn for the worse on Thursday (Feb 18) as they lost 2-1 away to Danish champions Midtjylland in the Europa League.

manutd-3

Goals from the talented Pione Sisto and young Nigerian forward Paul Onuachu gave Midtjylland the victory in Herning after Memphis Depay had put a weakened United side ahead in the first leg of their last-32 tie.

That away goal gives United every chance of turning things around in next Thursday’s return at Old Trafford but the spectre of a humiliating exit hangs in the air at a time when Van Gaal’s side lag behind in their bid to finish in the top four of the Premier League.

The Dutch manager has admitted winning the Europa League may now be his side’s best chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League and this latest setback will only increase the pressure on him.

He sent out a weakened side with Sergio Romero replacing the injured David de Gea in goal, and the likes of Paddy McNair and Donald Love featuring from the start against opponents who eliminated Southampton earlier in the competition, and Midtjylland deserved their win.

“It’s just not good enough. It’s not acceptable. It’s got to be a lot better,” admitted United midfielder Michael Carrick, speaking to BT Sport. “We didn’t really kick on after we scored. With a performance and a result like that we go home very disappointed.”

Premier League title contenders Tottenham Hotspur fared better, coming away from their trip to Italy to face Fiorentina with a 1-1 draw that puts them in a strong position ahead of next week’s return.

Mauricio Pochettino sent out a strong side, albeit one missing first-choice goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and with Harry Kane on the bench. And Spurs went in front in the 37th minute when Nacer Chadli converted from the penalty spot after Ben Davies was brought down by Nenad Tomovic.

However, Fiorentina, who sit third in Serie A, drew level just before the hour mark thanks to Federico Bernardeschi, whose long-range strike beat Michel Vorm with the aid of a deflection off Ryan Mason.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp’s return to Germany with Liverpool saw his side draw 0-0 with Bundesliga outfit Augsburg in Bavaria, leaving that tie finely poised.

Liverpool may regret not getting an away goal, but it could have been worse for them as substitute Ji Dong-won hit the woodwork for the hosts late on. “There’s no point getting carried away, 0-0 away from home isn’t a bad result, but we still have a lot of work to do,” said Klopp.

SIX OF THE BEST

Valencia can already start looking forward to the last 16 after destroying Rapid Vienna 6-0 at the Mestalla to give under-fire coach Gary Neville a major boost.

Valencia were five goals to the good at the break with Santi Mina scoring two and Dani Parejo, Alvaro Negredo and Andre Gomes also on target. Substitute Rodrigo wrapped up the win late on.

Holders Sevilla have one foot in the last 16 after beating Molde of Norway 3-0 at the Sanchez Pizjuan with Fernando Llorente netting twice before Kevin Gameiro wrapped up the win.

Fellow Spaniards Villarreal beat Serie A visitors Napoli 1-0 via a late goal from Denis Suarez, and Athletic Bilbao completed a fine night for clubs from La Liga as they won 1-0 at Marseille thanks to a stunning volley by Aritz Aduriz, the veteran striker scoring his 26th goal of the season.

Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmind put themselves in a strong position against FC Porto as they beat the Portuguese giants 2-0 at the Signal Iduna Park thanks to a goal in each half from Lukasz Piszczek and Marco Reus.

Dortmund’s local rivals Schalke drew 0-0 with Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine while Bayer Leverkusen won 1-0 at Sporting Lisbon with Karim Bellarabi getting the only goal.

Anderlecht beat Olympiakos 1-0 as Serigne Mbodji got the only goal of the game in Brussels, while a late strike by Jean-Christophe Bahebeck, on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, gave Saint-Etienne a 3-2 win at home to Swiss champions Basel.

Lazio came from behind to draw 1-1 with Galatasaray in Istanbul thanks to a Sergej Milinkovic-Savic strike, while Sparta Prague edged the Russians Krasnodar 1-0 and 2011 runners-up Braga beat Sion 2-1 in Switzerland.

Messi passes 300 Liga goals as Barcelona extend lead

Lionel Messi moved past 300 La Liga goals as Barcelona moved six points clear at the top of the table with a 3-1 win at Sporting Gijon on Wednesday (Feb 17).

barcelona-2

The five-time World Player of the Year struck either side of Carlos Castro’s well-worked equaliser in a three-goal burst in five first-half minutes.

Luis Suarez missed a second-half penalty days after famously converting Messi’s pass from a spot-kick against Celta Vigo, but made amends with a brilliant finish for Barca’s third midway through the second half.

Atletico Madrid are Barca’s closest challengers with Real Madrid a further point adrift in third.

The match had been postponed due to Barcelona’s commitments in the Club World Cup in December and, with a huge clash against fellow strugglers Real Betis to come on Saturday, Sporting boss and former Barca defender Abelardo Fernandez made nine changes to his side from the team that started Friday’s 2-2 draw with Rayo Vallecano.

However, in a match dominated by the European champions, it was the hosts who had the first clear opening as Alex Menendez shot just wide from Barca loanee Alen Halilovic’s through ball.

Barca coach Luis Enrique also made five changes, but the star front three of Messi, Suarez and Neymar started after their incredible display in the 6-1 thrashing of Celta at the weekend.

Suarez had the first chance to extend his lead as the league’s top scorer from Neymar’s inch-perfect pass, but the Uruguayan fired straight at Ivan Cuellar.

Messi broke the deadlock with a deadly accurate drive into the bottom corner from 25 yards to become the first player ever to bring up a triple century of La Liga goals.

Yet, the lead only lasted two minutes as a brilliant counter-attack saw Pablo Perez pick out Menendez on the left and his low cross was swept home at the back post by Castro.

Barca promptly responded, though, as Suarez showed great strength to hold the ball up and then lay it off for Messi to fire into the roof of the net with the outside of his left foot.

Luis Enrique’s men should have put the game out of sight before half-time as Cuellar flew to his right to prevent Messi from scoring a first-half hat-trick before Neymar curled the rebound against the post.

Barca’s demolition of Celta in the final half an hour on Sunday was lit up by Messi’s decision to pass a penalty into Suarez’s path to complete his hat-trick.

And the former Liverpool striker may have regretted not returning the favour as Cuellar dived to his right to save Suarez’s spot-kick after the ‘keeper had brought down Neymar. Barca have now missed eight of their 16 penalties this season.

However, Suarez made amends with a much harder opportunity 23 minutes from time when his left-footed effort curled in off the far post for his 40th goal of the season.

Arda Turan should have rounded off a 31st consecutive match without defeat for Barca with his first goal for the club, but he tried to square Messi’s brilliant cross to Suarez and the ball flew inches wide.

The Vietnamese, standing at the 44 th place in the world’s futsal rankings, were not frightened by the rivals that are 35 notches higher than them, as they challenged each other in the encounter in Uzbekistan.  Vietnam was thought to be impossible to win over Japan who had been asian champions for three times ( 2006, 2012 and 2014).

The teams drew 4-4 after 50 minutes, including extra time, and thus went on for a showdown in the six-meter penalty shootout, an equivalent of the 11-meter penalty in association football (soccer).

PSG’s Cavani shows his worth with winner against Chelsea

Paris St Germain substitute Edinson Cavani, criticised by French media lacking composure in front of goal, responded in style to earn a 2-1 home win over Chelsea in their Champions League last-16 first leg on Tuesday.

The Uruguay forward, who has scored only once in Ligue 1 this year, fired a low angled shot past goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois in the 78th minute after John Obi Mikel had cancelled out Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s opener at the end of the first half.

That did not surprise PSG coach Laurent Blanc, who brought Cavani on for Lucas four minutes before he got the winner.

“I’m not just saying it because he scored tonight, I always say it, Eddy is a player who can score,” Blanc told a news conference. “He was going through a tough period so I hope it will give him his confidence back.”

PSG knocked Chelsea out on away goals at the same stage last year after the Blues had prevailed the previous season in the quarter-finals and have the edge going into the second leg.

It was Chelsea’s first defeat in 13 games since Dutchman Guus Hiddink took over from the sacked Jose Mourinho but they will fancy their chances at Stamford Bridge on March 9.

With Chelsea’s inspirational captain John Terry ruled out with a hamstring injury, Branislav Ivanovic moved from full back to central defence and wore the skipper’s armband.

Marco Verratti started for PSG having only just recovered from a groin injury, while Blanc chose to field Marquinhos on the right side of defence in place of the Serge Aurier, who has been suspended for insulting Blanc and several team mates.

Chelsea had the best chance midway through the first half when striker Diego Costa’s point-blank header was instinctively palmed on to the bar by PSG keeper Kevin Trapp.

Ibrahimovic, who was sent off in London last year and picked up a yellow card on Tuesday, broke the deadlock six minutes before halftime with a low free kick deflected past Courtois by the heel of Obi Mikel, who had fouled Brazilian Lucas.

But Chelsea hit back just before the interval when Costa deflected a corner into the path of Mikel, who controlled the ball before firing home his first goal in 14 months.

Lucas was replaced in the 74th minute by Cavani who had an immediate impact, collecting Angel Di Maria’s perfect pass on the right and scoring with a low shot through Courtois’s legs.

Huu Thang chosen to coach Vietnam’s national football team

The Vietnam Football Federation has chosen one of the country’s most famous players Nguyen Huu Thang as the new coach of the national men’s team, ending weeks of speculation and debate over the much scrutinized position.

huu_thang_nn_OODW

Thang, 44, is expected to sign a two-year contract with VFF to replace Japanese coach Toshiya Miura, who was dismissed last month following the team’s poor performance at the recent Asian Football Confederation U23 Championship.
His monthly salary has been said to be about VND200 million (US$8,930), the highest for a local coach. But VFF has dismissed the information reported by many local newspapers. Miura was paid $10,000 a month.
A VFF official said the new contract does not specify goals for Thang.
“However, our expected targets are a gold medal at the 29th Southeast Asian Games in Malaysia and the final of the 2016 AFF Cup,” he said.
A Ha Tinh Province native, Thang used to play as midfielder for Song Lam Nghe An from 1993-1999 and the national team from 1996-2000.
He started coaching his former club since 2005, with a brief gig at Hanoi T&T in 2009.
Thang helped Song Lam Nghe An win the National Cup in 2010 and V.League champion title in 2011.

Head Coach Thanh Hung farewell Ha Noi T&T

Ha Noi T&T made a big bang just one week before the V.League’s opening when they separated from head coach Phan Thanh Hung.

HLV Phan Thanh Hùng

Head Coach Phan Thanh Hung

Hung, who had been working with the capital team for six years, announced his leave on Saturday, giving his position over to youth team manager Pham Minh Duc, who is still shocked over the sudden appointment.

“Hung has asked for his rest several times, and last month he wanted to stop coaching for family reasons. We have persuaded him a lot, but could not make him change his mind,” said Ha Noi T&T President Nguyen Quoc Hoi.

“We will let him rest, and want him to become our technical director when he comes back,” Hoi added.

Hung started working at Ha Noi T&T near the end of 2009 and won two V.League titles in 2010 and 2013. Also, in his debut year he was awarded a Super Cup trophy.

He also led the team to the second position in the remaining seasons.

“I left Da Nang behind to arrive at Ha Noi in 2009. More than six years here means that I have had little time with my family. I knew that being a football coach, I would have to accept this reality. But I could not leave my home for longer. It is the main reason for my quitting,” Hung said.

“It is the right moment, as I have prepared the team in all fields before the V.League begins, especially the younger generation, they are ready for a tough tournament.

“The club managers have also found a good coach to replace me. Duc is coach of the U21s. He has experience in coaching young players, and some of our first team players were brought up from his squad. I think there will be no obstacles for him,” Hung, age 55, said.

Many players were also surprised with the news.

National midfielder Pham Thanh Luong said he did not believe it until the team mangers confirmed the news during a meeting.

“It is surprising. I felt sad, because in six years here he left impressive marks, he helped us a lot in our success, always being in the top two,” Luong said.

U23 midfielder Dao Duy Khanh also shared his opinion, saying ‘thank you’ to Hung, who he considered to be another father in his career.

The new coach, Duc, 40, is a former national defender. He played for Ha Noi ACB, Hoang Anh Gia Lai and Becamex Binh Duong.

After retirement, Duc focused on youth football training.

He brought Ha Noi T&T to the top podium of the National U21 Football Championship before becoming the head coach of the U21 squad at last November’s International U21 Football Tournament in HCM City.

“I am surprised, very surprised, because I never thought about this position. I have even made plans for my young team in 2016. Now I am taking charge of the first team, just a week before the V.League’s opening,” said Duc.

“I would be considered a coward if I refused. I accept this duty and will try my best. V.League is always harsh and there are many unexpected things happening. The pressure will be heavy, and it is even heavier because I am replacing such a good coach like Hung,” he added.

“But I have my own advantages, because I had nine years competing in the V.League and many players were under my reign with the young teams. I have learned from my predecessors and colleagues to ensure my job.”

Ha Noi T&T started training for the coming tournament on February 13. They will be visitors in the first round match against FLC Thanh Hoa on Sunday.
