Di Maria helps PSG past Toulouse and into League Cup final

Holders Paris Saint-Germain moved into the French League Cup final after seeing off a stubborn Toulouse 2-0 at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday.

toulouse
The away team were much improved from their 4-0 thrashing at Monaco on Sunday, but after Ezequiel Lavezzi put PSG in front the result never seemed in doubt.

Angel di Maria backed up his excellent brace against Angers on Saturday with a wonderful second goal to put paid to Toulouse hopes.

The visitors’ misery was compounded late on when substitute Martin Braithwaite had a penalty saved by Nicolas Douchez.

The capital city outfit are now just one win away from extending their record haul of five League Cups and will face Lille in the final on April 23 at the Stade de France.

PSG coach Laurent Blanc rang the changes from the side that played at the weekend, with seven alterations to the starting lineup in all.

It was a rather drab opening 45 minutes in the capital, with a speculative effort off target from PSG midfielder Benjamin Stambouli the closest either side came to breaking the deadlock.

Away manager Dominique Arribage though would have been pleased with the way his men kept their more illustrious opponents at arm’s length for long periods.

PSG though finally ended Toulouse’s resistance in the 65th minute as Lavezzi sent out a reminder of his talents with a crucial goal.

The Argentine was set clear by an excellent deep pass from Adrien Rabiot that took the visiting defence out of the equation, and he finished at the second attempt after goalkeeper Mauro Goicoechea had kept out his initial effort.

Just seven minutes later his compatriot di Maria made it two with a pin-point, swerving shot from distance that gave PSG the breathing space they needed to ease into the final.

Braithwaite came off the bench and won an 89th minute penalty when he was brought down by Presnel Kimpembe. But the Danish striker’s weak spot-kick was well saved by stand-in goalkeeper Douchez.

Although David Luiz hobbled off injured in stoppage time, this was a thoroughly satisfactory day for the French champions.

De Bruyne sends Man City to League Cup final

Kevin De Bruyne met with controversy, glory and injury as Manchester City defeated Everton 3-1 on Wednesday (Jan 27) to set up a League Cup final showdown with Liverpool next month.

de-bruyne-cup

Everton extended their 2-1 advantage from the first leg when Ross Barkley scored a fine individual goal in the 18th minute, but Fernandinho quickly equalised before substitute De Bruyne levelled the tie and then set up Sergio Aguero to complete a 4-3 aggregate victory in the 76th minute.

Replays, however, suggested that Raheem Sterling had taken the ball beyond the byline before cutting it back for De Bruyne to score and the former Wolfsburg winger finished the match on a stretcher after his knee buckled in a late challenge with Ramiro Funes Mori.

“To play a final at Wembley is very important. I am very happy,” said City manager Manuel Pellegrini. On suggestions De Bruyne’s goal should not have stood, he added: “That is not why we won. We won because we scored three goals and Everton had just one chance.”

But Everton manager Roberto Martinez said: “Everyone that has seen the replay can clearly see the ball is out of play. It’s very, very hard to take. If they score three goals in the right way, then you accept it.”

City’s win deprived Everton of a meeting with Liverpool – who overcame Stoke City on penalties on Tuesday – in what would have been the first all-Merseyside major final since the 1988-89 FA Cup and the first League Cup final to feature the Goodison Park club since 1984.

Pellegrini’s side had to come from 3-1 down on aggregate at the Etihad Stadium after Barkley swelled Everton’s advantage with a goal that demonstrated both his own brilliance and City’s defensive porousness.

The Everton number 20 evaded the sliding Nicolas Otamendi and foxed Fabian Delph with a stylish feint before steering a low shot into City goalkeeper Willy Caballero’s bottom-right corner.

Barkley’s strike left City needing two goals to stay in the tie, but after Sterling had tested Joel Robles and Yaya Toure had curled over, they halved the aggregate deficit in the 24th minute.

FURY

Aguero’s shot was blocked by returning Everton skipper Phil Jagielka, but Fernandinho followed in with a right-foot drive that clipped Leighton Baines’s heel and left Robles clutching at thin air.

City almost levelled the tie nine minutes before the interval, Aguero thumping a shot against the right-hand upright from outside the box and Sterling seeing his follow-up swatted behind by Robles.

Barkley created a chance for Deulofeu early in the second half, the Spaniard drawing a save from Caballero with a side-foot shot, but with Jesus Navas on in place of Delph, City had a new outlet on the right flank and they began to bang on the door.

Aguero miscued, uncharacteristically, from a Navas cross, Silva headed a Pablo Zabaleta cross against the post and Tom Cleverley had to produce a sliding block to thwart Sterling. Martinez added fresh legs in the form of James McCarthy and Arouna Kone.

Pellegrini responded by replacing Toure with De Bruyne, City’s record £55 million signing, and four minutes after coming on the Belgian levelled the tie.

Sterling had moved to the left following Navas’s entrance and he showed England colleague John Stones a clean pair of heels before pulling the ball back for De Bruyne, who side-footed home.

To the fury of Evertonians on social media, replays showed that the ball had just crossed the line before Sterling played it into the box.

And the mood of those in royal blue plummeted six minutes later when De Bruyne shaped a cross into the box from the right and Aguero glanced a deft header past Robles to send City to Wembley.

However, De Bruyne’s night was to end prematurely when he had to be carried off on a stretcher, with Pellegrini suggesting that he had damaged the medial ligament.

Vietnamese football league organizer, Swiss data firm ink deal to combat match-rigging

A football (soccer) league organizer has shaken hands with a Swiss data company to track and prevent match-rigging in tournaments in Vietnam.

X1ZFNwAU
The Vietnam Professional Football Company (VPF), which is authorized by the Vietnam Football Federation to organize football leagues in the Southeast Asian country, entered into an agreement with Sportradar on Monday in a bid to prevent dishonesty in the Beautiful Game.

Sportradar, based in St. Gallen, Switzerland, provides sports data and digital content for its clients around the world.

The VPF will cooperate with Sportradar in accessing information and analyzing data related to games in the V-League 1, V-League 2, National Cup, as well as in organizing seminars on match-fixing prevention for participating clubs, taught by leading instructors invited by the Swiss firm, according to their deal.

The Vietnamese firm said it will place emphasis on combating match-rigging in the 2016 season.

Biplav Gautam, director of federation services, Asia at Sportradar, said at the signing ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City that this cooperation does not mean that rigging is taking place in VPF-organized competitions.

The deal is only indicative of Vietnamese football becoming more professional in terms of organization and management, Gautam said, adding that his customers are the Union of European Football Associations, the Asian Football Confederation, the German Football Association, the Football Federation Australia, and the Major League Soccer.

Sportradar has organized six workshops for 14 Vietnamese clubs and explained to Vietnamese football officials how its data system works during the past two weeks.

The company has also worked with security officials in Vietnam regarding match-rigging issues, Gautam said.

The VPF will closely collaborate with the Swiss firm to crack down on any misconduct in football, he added.

FIFA five hunt for votes as campaign enters final month

The five candidates to take over the FIFA presidency from the banned Sepp Blatter stepped up the frantic hunt for votes on Tuesday (Jan 26) as the campaign entered the final month.

the-five-fifa

FIFA sent a formal notice to the 209 member associations on Tuesday confirming that Prince Ali bin al Hussein, Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim al Khalifa, Gianni Infantino, Tokyo Sexwale and Jerome Champagne would take part in the Feb 26 vote in Zurich.

“The Ad-hoc Electoral Committee has formally admitted and declared the candidates eligible for the election of the office of FIFA president at the extraordinary FIFA Congress,” said the letter.

The world body has faced major pressure since US and Swiss authorities launched major investigations into FIFA and Blatter, 79, was banned for eight years for misconduct.

While Sheikh Salman, head of the Asian Football Confederation, and Infantino, the UEFA general secretary, are seen as the frontrunners, all five are lobbying hard for votes in a races in which many observers say a surprise is still possible.

All have concentrated on the need to clean up football, while making rival proposals to increase the World Cup and give more of FIFA’s riches to national associations.

Sheikh Salman, who should get a majority of the AFC’s 46 votes as well as many of Africa’s 54, said Monday that he could invite Infantino, or English Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore to be FIFA secretary general if he wins.

“So far there’s no agreement and no deal but let’s see what happens in the next few days,” Sheikh Salman told Sky Sport television of his contacts with Infantino.

The Bahraini official has been under pressure, however, over accusations of involvement in a crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators in the Gulf state. The sheikh said he could guarantee “one million per cent” that no footballer or athlete had been abused.

JET-SET CAMPAIGN

The Sheikh, like most of the other candidates, withdrew from a proposed FIFA debate before the European parliament on Wednesday in a sign of the growing intensity of the campaign.

Infantino and Prince Ali, a former FIFA vice president from Jordan, were at a South American confederation, CONMEBOL, congress in Asuncion on Tuesday seeking support.

The confederation is to elect a new president. Three of its former leaders are among 39 officials and businessmen and two companies facing US charges over more than $200 million in bribes paid for marketing and broadcasting deals.

CONMEBOL are expected to back Infantino, a Swiss national who has been right hand man to UEFA boss Michel Platini, who was banned with Blatter last month. The European confederation, UEFA, says most of its 53 members will also back Infantino.

But the vote is secret which has encouraged some of the outsiders to step up their bid. Prince Ali, the only challenger against Blatter in an election in May last year, has toured the world seeking support.

The Jordanian royal has made a complaint to the electoral committee about a cooperation accord made by the Asian and African confederations this month which he indicated was a bid by Sheikh Salman to secure African support. The sheikh has strongly denied the allegation.

African candidate Sexwale, a former Robben Island prisoner with Nelson Mandela turned business tycoon and politician, has faced criticism in his native South Africa over his lacklustre campaign. He has called for a ban on sponsors’ names appearing on national team shirts. But Sexwale has travelled much less than his rivals.

Champagne, a former FIFA official and French diplomat, said the election would be “complicated” and would “only be decided in the final moments.” Calling for greater commitment to reforms, he told French radio on Tuesday that “some candidates are making totally demagogic proposals, especially financial and playing a 40 team World Cup.”

Vietnam beat Malaysia in friendly futsal match

Viet Nam’s national futsal team defeated Malaysia 5-4 in the first leg of a friendly match in HCM City on January 25.

Niểm vui chiến thắng của Tuyển Futsal Việt Nam

The hosts’ goals were scored by Phung Trong Luan and Nguyen Minh Tri (two each) and Nguyen Bao Quan.

The two sides will meet again at Thai Son Nam Gymnasium today.

The match is being held in preparation for the 2016 AFC Futsal Championship finals, which is scheduled to be held from February 10 to 21 in Uzbekistan.

At the AFC event, Viet Nam are in Group C with Thailand, Hong Kong and Tajikistan, while Malaysia are in Group D with Japan, Australia and Qatar.

Sixteen teams will play in the tournament, which acts as the AFC qualifier for the World Cup.

The top five teams will qualify for the 2016 FIFA Futsal World Cup, which will be held in Colombia.

Costa got Mertesacker sent off, says Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said Diego Costa had got Per Mertesacker sent off after his side’s Premier League title hopes were dented by Sunday’s (Jan 24) 1-0 home defeat by Chelsea.

per-mertesacker
Mertesacker was shown a straight red card for a last-man foul on Diego Costa in the 18th minute and Costa scored the game’s only goal five minutes later, dispatching a cross from Branislav Ivanovic at the near post.

Costa had been the catalyst behind Gabriel’s dismissal in September’s reverse fixture, goading the Brazilian defender into kicking out at him as Chelsea won 2-0, but while Mertesacker’s foul on him seemed clear-cut, Wenger felt that the blame once again lay with the Spain striker.

“He has got two players sent off this season,” Wenger said. “I am accusing him of nothing, but those are the facts.” Backtracking somewhat, the Frenchman added: “That is part of a striker’s game of course, and Costa is very good at that.”

Chelsea interim manager Guus Hiddink said that referee Mark Clattenburg had been correct to dismiss the German defender. “No, there was no doubt,” he said. “Diego could run straight to (goalkeeper) Petr Cech, but was tripped. It’s obvious that it was a red card without any discussion.”

The result prevented Arsenal from reclaiming top spot in the Premier League from Leicester City and left them in third place, below Manchester City on goal difference.

Chelsea captain John Terry said that his side’s controlled performance would give the champions belief in their quest to close the 14-point gap that separates them from the Champions League places.

“Mentally we were sound and on top,” Terry told Sky Sports. “As soon as they had the man sent off they sat back, so we pressed up higher and won the ball back. We are delighted with the win.

“Anything is doable. Everybody is beating everybody else. It is a tough league and if we put a run together we have a good chance (of finishing in the top four). We will fight until there are no points to play for.”

Liverpool eye League Cup final spot

Zigzagging across the road like a clown car they may be, but Liverpool are also just 90 minutes from Wembley ahead of Tuesday’s League Cup semi-final second leg against Stoke City.

liverpool-s-midfielder

A team that recorded seven 1-1 draws in nine games in September and October is beginning to gain a reputation for slapdash spectaculars, following the recent 3-3 draw at home to Arsenal and Saturday’s remarkable 5-4 victory at Norwich City.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have a 1-0 lead to protect at Anfield on Tuesday, but despite the slender nature of their advantage, he is not worried that their defensive problems will prove their undoing again.

“I have to find a solution of course, but it is not the biggest problem in a semi-final,” the German told his eve-of-match press conference.

“We don’t have to think about it because it is a semi-final and it will be go from the first whistle. We have to fight for every single ball, every single yard, and that is easy.

“I’ve heard about the special atmosphere at Anfield in semi-finals and I am really looking forward to it. Let’s take the whole power of LFC and take it to the final.”

A draw will suffice for Liverpool to reach a first major final since 2012, when they won the League Cup and lost to Chelsea in the FA Cup final, after Jordon Ibe’s first-half goal settled the first leg on Jan 5.

With Everton leading Manchester City 2-1 in the other semi-final, there is the prospect of a first Merseyside derby in a major final since the deciding match of the 1988-89 FA Cup, which Liverpool won 3-2.

But Liverpool’s fans cannot know which version of their team will show up — the slick, counter-punching side that won 3-1 at Chelsea, 4-1 at City and 6-1 at Southampton, or the meekly surrendering one beaten in recent weeks by West Ham United, Watford and Newcastle United.

SHAWCROSS OUT

With right-back Nathaniel Clyne doubtful after taking a knock to his knee at Carrow Road and centre-backs Dejan Lovren and Martin Skrtel still sidelined, Klopp could be without three senior defenders.

Recent loan signing Steven Caulker is ineligible, but full-back Jon Flanagan is available and could make his first start since May 2014 after two knee operations.

Stoke went into the first leg on the back of impressive victories over Manchester City, Manchester United and Everton, but their form has tapered off somewhat since the turn of the year and they were beaten 3-0 at Leicester City on Saturday.

Injuries have also started to bite. Captain Ryan Shawcross will miss the trip to Anfield after sustaining a back problem at Leicester and midfielder Geoff Cameron is unavailable due to an ankle injury.

But Bojan Krkic and Marko Arnautovic, rested at the King Power Stadium, are due to reform their attacking trident alongside Xherdan Shaqiri, who made a successful return from a hamstring problem.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes is seeking to steer the club to their first League Cup final since they won the tournament in 1972 and he has urged his players to grasp the opportunity to make history.

“It has been 40-odd years, and we remind the players of that because this is an opportunity to make your mark in the game,” said the Welshman.

“We are going to give it everything. It is a chance for everybody involved here to achieve something that hasn’t been achieved for many years.”

Everton and Manchester City meet at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday with the visitors in pole position after goals from Ramiro Funes Mori and Romelu Lukaku secured a 2-1 first-leg win at Goodison Park.
