Late Rooney’s goal hands Manchester Utd victory

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney pounced to score a 78th-minute winner as his side stunned eternal rivals Liverpool with a smash-and-grab 1-0 victory at a freezing Anfield on Sunday (Jan 17).

Presiding over his first game against United, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp watched his team dominate, but Rooney punished their profligacy with his fifth goal in four games, a close range snapshot after Marouane Fellaini had hit the bar.

It was United’s first shot on target, but it was enough to give visiting manager Louis van Gaal his fourth win over Liverpool in four games and a first away victory since the 2-1 success at Watford on Nov 21.

“When you beat Liverpool, it is good for the fans and for the table as our competitors also lose points,” said Van Gaal. “It is a big step in a good direction and I am very happy. In the second half we played much better and kept the ball better and created chances, and Wayne Rooney makes the fantastic goal again.”

Victory took United to within two points of the Champions League places and allowed them to reclaim fifth place from West Ham United, leaving Liverpool six points back in ninth place, their top-four hopes fading.

“It’s a derby and you have one job – to win it,” said a disappointed Klopp. “United would have to say they were not so good, but they won so they’re happy. We played better, but we feel frustrated.”

They may be England’s two most decorated clubs, but Liverpool and United are not this season’s leading contenders and a scrappy, shapeless first half reflected both clubs’ recent difficulties.

Both teams had drawn 3-3 on their previous outings – Liverpool at home to Arsenal, United at Newcastle United – but there was to be no frenzied attacking to warm the 43,865 shivering souls at Anfield.

What quality football there was came chiefly from Liverpool and, in particular, Roberto Firmino, preferred once again to Christian Benteke as the nominal frontman.

He was involved in two early chances, first drilling narrowly wide after Jordan Henderson, freed by Lucas Leiva, had seen a header palmed away by the outrushing David de Gea and then releasing James Milner to slice wide with a fine, half-volleyed pass.

It was from a Firmino flick, meanwhile, that Henderson flashed a shot across goal and wide after a neat move also involving Adam Lallana.

UNITED TRIO WATCH

The Brazilian looked poised to put Liverpool ahead six minutes before half-time, but as he steadied his right foot to shoot, Anthony Martial nipped in to intervene.

A ragged half for the visitors ended with Ashley Young hobbling off after appearing to injure his groin, with youngster Cameron Borthwick-Jackson coming on.

Stationed out on the left, Martial had to wait until first-half stoppage time for a sight of goal, but after driving into the box, his shot was blocked by Mamadou Sakho.

Injured United trio Michael Carrick, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo were among the fans in the away end and they could only look on with concern as Liverpool’s dominance continued in the second half, De Gea saving with his feet after Emre Can had flummoxed Chris Smalling with a step-over.

Martial threatened in the 56th minute, fizzing a shot wide after Borthwick-Jackson’s cross was deflected into his path, but Liverpool were soon back on top.

De Gea fielded a side-foot effort from Henderson and then plunged to his right to parry an effort from Can before springing up to claw away Firmino’s cross from the rebound.

Van Gaal sent on Juan Mata, match-winner in United’s 2-1 victory at Anfield last March, and Memphis Depay, but still Liverpool came, Mamadou Sakho heading Milner’s cross over.

They could not make their pressure count, however, and with 12 minutes remaining Rooney made them pay by slamming the ball past Simon Mignolet after Fellaini’s header came back off the bar.

Liverpool’s best chance of an equaliser fell to Firmino, but he could not control Milner’s mishit shot right in front of goal and as his disbelieving glance at the linesman testified, there was no offside flag to spare his blushes.

Chelsea, West Brom charged after Bridge battle

Chelsea and West Bromwich Albion were charged by the Football Association on Friday (Jan 16) for failing to control their players during Wednesday’s 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge.

An already feisty encounter boiled over following an off-the-ball trip by West Brom’s Claudio Yacob, who had already been booked, on Chelsea striker Diego Costa.

The Baggies midfielder avoided a second yellow card and a dismissal before being promptly substituted by boss Tony Pulis.

Albion’s James McClean also clashed with Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, while Costa was involved in several skirmishes with Jonas Olsson before reportedly punching a hole in the tunnel wall after the final whistle.

“Chelsea and West Bromwich Albion have both been charged for failing to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion,” a FA statement read.

“The charge relates to an incident which occurred in or around the 58th minute of their fixture on Wednesday, January 13, 2016.

“Both clubs have until 6pm on 20 January 2016 to respond to the charge.”

Chelsea interim boss Guus Hiddink referred to the incident on Friday.

Hiddink felt Yacob should have been dismissed and was so frustrated with the performance of referee Anthony Taylor that he expressed his concerns to fourth official Jon Moss. He was taken aback by the reply.

“I told him: ‘This is one of the worst referees of the Premier League I have experienced,'” Hiddink said.

“He said to me ‘you haven’t seen me yet’, which was a beautiful remark I think.”

Van Gaal calls for calm, plays down De Gea exit talk

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal urged his players to keep their cool against fierce rivals Liverpool on Sunday as he dampened down suggestions goalkeeper David de Gea would move to Real Madrid this month.

The fixture between the two North-West giants is always one of the high points of the Premier League season and has seen more than it’s fair share of red cards over the years, with former United defender Nemanja Vidic managing to collect four himself in a six-year spell.

Despite neither side being in the hunt for the title at present, Sunday’s match at Anfield is likely to be a fiery affair with Van Gaal in need of a win to keep the pressure off his position and to maintain a challenge for a top-four finish.

A victory for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp in his first game against United, meanwhile, would further endear him to the Reds’ supporters.

Nevertheless, Van Gaal will warn his team to avoid the kind of emotion that saw Liverpool great Steven Gerrard sent off less than a minute after coming on as a substitute in his final appearance in the fixture last March.

Van Gaal, acknowledging this is the biggest game on the calendar for United, said Friday: “That’s how the fans are seeing that and I feel it also.

“You can see it at the faces of the players. Last season for example, Gerrard is on and sent off within 30 seconds. We need to be aggressive, but also under control in these kind of matches. But that is always difficult, because the passion to play these kind of games is always high.”

‘CAPABLE KLOPP’

Van Gaal has enjoyed three successive wins over Liverpool since taking charge of United in 2014, including a 3-1 victory at Old Trafford in September.

Another victory would stall talk of a possible change of manager at Old Trafford following a run of just one win in eight games but the Dutchman knows he faces a serious test in his first Premier League meeting with Klopp.

The pair shared two wins apiece when they were rival managers in Germany – at Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund – and the United boss has been impressed with Klopp’s start in English football since his arrival on Merseyside in October.

“You can see his (Klopp’s) hand and that is very important to see somebody’s hand when he is the manager. You can see a very aggressive and pressing kind of play in Liverpool’s game,” Van Gaal explained.

“Of course, he has to learn also the Premier League, the rhythm of the Premier League, and I think he knows already the difference between the Premier League and German league.

“But he is very capable to be a manager in the Premier League because he has always played this kind of football and I think the fans shall love it.”

United’s supporters enjoyed their side’s more positive attacking display as they drew 3-3 at Newcastle United on Tuesday.

But for Van Gaal it was a case of a missed opportunity after his side, widely criticised for their lack of goals this season, twice surrendered the lead.

“I think I was more disappointed than the fans. On the streets I have had a lot of support but then I say to them we lost two points and two points is very important in this period because we have to win points.”

De Gea’s proposed move to Madrid collapsed on deadline day in the last transfer window but there are suggestions the Spanish giants may renew their interest this month.

That is after they were hit by a FIFA ban from registering players over the next two windows after breaching regulations in the signing of young players.

“I don’t know, because I don’t think that kind of thing plays in the mind of David de Gea. I have never thought that,” said Van Gaal.

“Now I am seeing a De Gea who is enjoying to stay here at Manchester United and play good games.”

‘Little’ Leicester are not normal, says Ranieri

The success “little” Leicester City have achieved this season is not normal, manager Claudio Ranieri said on Thursday as his side sit second in the Premier League after 21 games, behind leaders Arsenal only on goal difference.

TIqYtOiG

Unlikely title challengers Leicester were rock bottom for most of last season but pulled off a great escape to stay up after winning seven of their last nine matches and finish 14th.

Ranieri, who took over from Nigel Pearson at Leicester during the close season, has urged the club’s supporters to continue to dream.

“If the ‘little’ Leicester is looked down, it’s normal. It’s not normal what Leicester are doing. It’s unbelievable. It’s fantastic and our fans are dreaming,” Ranieri told reporters on Thursday.

“The fans must continue to dream, we must continue to work hard. We are so fast. Sometimes it’s difficult to stop us.”

After Wednesday’s impressive 1-0 league victory at Tottenham Hotspur, Ranieri called on his team not to lose focus when they travel to take on bottom side Aston Villa on Saturday.

“I believe only in the next match. I know the next match may be tougher than Tottenham. Aston Villa are a good team. They won their last match so now I want to see our mentality,” the 64-year-old Italian said.

“Okay, we went to Tottenham and won, which is not easy but now it’s important how we change our mindset and get ready to fight again
