Vietnam lose 3-1 in U-23 championship opener

Vietnam could not spring the expected surprise in the first match at the Asian U-23 Football Championship in Qatar on January 14.

U23 Việt Nam không thể vượt qua U23 Jordan

U23 Vietnam lost against U23 Jordan

Coach Toshyia Miura said on January 14 in a press briefing that Vietnam could make a bang against Jordan. But things were not easy for the coach and the team who took part in their first-ever continental championship.

The youngest team at the event lost 1-3 to Jordan in the opening game of the Group D.

Bahia Faisal scored a double and his teammate Omar Ahmad Almahashar added another one.

Vietnam’s only goal belonged to midfielder Do Duy Manh just five minutes before the end.

Before the tournament began, Miura had set a target of entering the quarter-final round and hoped to pocket four points from three group matches.

Vietnam will next meet Australia on January 17 while Jordan is to play the UAE.

In other groups, Pinyo Inpinit’s 84th minute equaliser salvaged a deserved point as Thailand claimed a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia in the teams’ Group B opener at Grand Hamad Stadium.

In Doha on January 13, Moon Chang-jin scored a goal in each half as the Republic of Korea edged out 10-man Uzbekistan 2-1 to make a winning start to Group C.

Real, Atletico banned from transfer market

Spanish giants Real Madrid suffered another institutional embarrassment on Thursday as they and rivals Atletico Madrid were banned by FIFA from buying players for one year over their dealing in under-age players.

real-madrid-s-forward

The ban will start from the July transfer window this year and finish with the January transfer market in 2017 meaning newly appointed Real coach Zinedine Zidane will be unable to strengthen his squad this summer.

Atletico were also fined 900,000 Swiss francs (€820,000) and Real 360,000 (€330,000). However, both clubs are still allowed to sign players until the end of the month.

“The two clubs were found to have violated several provisions concerning the international transfer and first registration of minor players as well as other relevant provisions with regard to the registration and participation of certain players in competitions,” said a FIFA statement.

Barcelona have just completed a one year ban for similar reasons.

Real and Atletico were “issued with a reprimand and given 90 days in which to regularise the situation of all minor players concerned,” FIFA said. They can still sell players during the transfer ban.

FIFA said the alarm was raised over the two clubs by FIFA’s Transfer Matching System and its disciplinary committee completed the inquiry.

Under international football rules, players under 18 cannot be transferred to another country, except in limited circumstances. All transfers need the approval of a special FIFA committee.

“The investigations concerned minor players who were involved and participated in competitions with the clubs over various periods between 2007 and 2014 (Atletico Madrid) and between 2005 and 2014 (Real Madrid),” FIFA said.

Neither Real nor Atletico made an immediate comment on whether they would appeal.

The ban follows a similar sanction handed to European champions Barcelona, who were unable to register new players during 2015.

Barca were initially banned in April 2014, but managed to delay the sanction taking effect until the transfer windows in January and the summer 2015 by launching an ultimately unsuccessful appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

By delaying the ban, Barca managed to sign the likes of Luis Suarez and Ivan Rakitic in the summer of 2014 to propel them to a treble of La Liga, Champions League and Copa del Rey, a route potentially open to both clubs depending on how quickly CAS could hear any potential appeal.

Madrid admitted in January that they had supplied FIFA with the details of 51 players as part of their investigation, which they claimed were exempt from the regulations for various reasons.

The news is the latest off-field blow for Real having sacked two Champions League winning coaches in Carlo Ancelotti and Rafael Benitez in the past seven months, as well as being thrown out of the Copa del Rey for fielding an ineligible player.

The signing of Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea was also frustrated at the last minute in August as the clubs failed to register the required paperwork in time.

The sanction could also be bad news for the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United, who had targeted Madrid stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale with Real highly unlikely to dispose of their best players without the chance to sign suitable replacements.

La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid’s usually hectic transfer policy will also be put on hold.

However, Diego Simeone’s men look well-placed to cope with the ban having invested heavily in young talent over the past year.

Indeed, Atletico have already made two additions to their squad in January in Argentine international midfielders Matias Kranevitter and Augusto Fernandez.

Neymar ordered to appear in Spanish court for fraud

Barcelona’s Brazilian star Neymar has been called to give evidence by Spain’s national court on Feb 2 for alleged fraud surrounding his transfer to Barcelona in 2013.

Both the player’s parents, Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu and former club president Sandro Rosell, as well as two directors of Neymar’s former club Santos have also been called to declare, according to a court filing released on Wednesday.

Barcelona and Santos will also have to give evidence via representatives on Feb 9 and Feb 1 respectively.

Public prosecutors filed for action to be taken against all the parties after a complaint of fraud and corruption was launched by the Brazilian investment fund DIS, which held 40 percent of Neymar’s sporting rights when he played at Santos, at the court in June 2015.

DIS has claimed it was cheated of its real share of the benefits of 23-year-old Neymar’s transfer in 2013 because part of the transfer fee was concealed by Barcelona and Santos.

The deal was originally valued at €57.1 million (US$62.1 million) by the Catalan club, but the Spanish judicial authorities have estimated the amount to be at least 83.3 million.

DIS received €6.8 million (US$7.7 million) out of the total 17.1 million that Barcelona paid to Santos, but claims it may also be due a share of the overall transfer payments.

In a separate lawsuit, a judge in May 2015 ordered Bartomeu, Rosell and the club itself to stand trial over alleged tax fraud linked to the signing.

The scandal over the concealed transfer fee led to Rosell’s resignation as president in January 2014 with then vice-president Bartomeu taking charge.

It is alleged the overall fee was split between a number of different contracts between Barcelona, Santos and Neymar himself.

A Brazilian court has also taken action freezing US$47 million in assets belonging to Neymar over tax evasion allegations between 2011 and 2013.

Neymar’s fiscal problems haven’t affected his form on the field as he finished third in FIFA’s Ballon d’Or for the best player in the world on Monday after helping Barca to win five trophies in 2015.

However, it has cast some doubt over his future at the club with his father Neymar Sr saying he would seek tax assurances before signing an extension to his Barcelona deal, which expires in 2018.

Messi wins Ballon d’Or for fifth time

Lionel Messi reclaimed the FIFA Ballon d’Or award for the world player of the year on Monday from his great rival Cristiano Ronaldo who had walked off with the award for the previous two years.

The Barcelona and Argentina forward took 41.33 percent of the votes followed by the Portuguese and Real Madrid forward (27.76 percent), with Brazil and Barcelona forward Neymar third (7.86 per cent).
“It is a very special moment for me to be back here on this stage, winning again another Ballon d’Or after being there in the audience watching Cristiano win,” said Messi as he accepted the award at the end of a drawn-out 90-minute ceremony.
“It’s incredible this is my fifth.”
Barcelona’s Luis Enrique was voted coach of the year while United States World Cup winner Carli Lloyd, who scored a hat-trick in the final against Japan, was named women’s player of the year.
Initially started as the FIFA World Player of the Year award in 1991, it became known as the Ballon d’Or after merging with France Football’s European footballer of the year award in 2010.
The award, shared exclusively between Messi and Real Madrid’s Ronaldo since Brazilian Kaka won in 2007, has been heavily promoted by FIFA and was broadcast to 190 countries with 1,100 guests including players and coaches attending the ceremony.
But it is not everyone’s cup of tea and some critics, such as Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger, say it is not appropriate in a team sport.
“I’m a big enemy of the Ballon d’Or. Who will win it? You know as well as I do that it’s certainly Messi who will win it. I think so. Overall I’m not a big fan of that,” the Frenchman said earlier on Monday.
The breakdown presented by FIFA also revealed tactical voting among the 165 national team coaches, 162 national team captains and 171 media representatives who cast votes.
Messi, eligible to vote as Argentina captain, named Barcelona team mates Luis Suarez, Neymar and Andres Iniesta as his top three.
Portugal captain Ronaldo choose three Real Madrid team mates — Karim Benzema, James Rodriguez and Gareth Bale.
Belgium captain Vincent Kompany opted for his compatriots Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne as his top two.
More surprisingly, Spain captain Iker Casillas — the former Real Madrid goalkeeper who now plays for Portuguese club Porto — was among those who did not vote.
Despite a red carpet and plenty of glitz, the event had a low-key air of predictability about it and was held against the backdrop of FIFA going through the worst corruption crisis since it was founded in 1904.
The sport is facing criminal investigations in both Switzerland and the United States, where some leading FIFA officials are among 41 individuals and sports entities who have been indicted on corruption charges.
Outgoing FIFA president Sepp Blatter, normally a central figure in the ceremony, was not involved after being banned for eight years by the Ethics Committee in December and there was no President’s Award, usually given out by Blatter for outstanding services to the game.
Past recipients have included Pele, former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson, the Haiti national team, Queen Rania of Jordan and South African anti-apartheid activist and veteran cleric, Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
Acting president Issa Hayatou played a low-key role, reading a brief speech before the start and appearing on stage when the awards for best player and women’s player were presented.
Ronaldo said the players did not want to discuss FIFA’s problems.
“We avoid answering this kind of question,” he told a press conference before the ceremony.
“We are professional football players, we compete every week, every day, we train and we just focus on that. These things happen not just in football but in life, and the best thing would be no corruption anywhere.”
In terms of individual achievement, Ronaldo had slightly the better in the last year, scoring 54 goals in 52 games for Real Madrid, compared to Messi’s 48 in 53.

There are seven players from Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) out of 23 players such as goalie Pham Van Tien, midfielder Nguyen Tuan Anh and strikers Nguyen Cong Phuong and Nguyen Van Toan.

Miura also called four other players from Ha Noi T&T including goalkeeper Phi Minh Long and striker Pham Van Thanh.

A total of 16 teams qualified to play in the tournament, including Qatar who qualified automatically as hosts.

According to the event’s draw, Viet Nam are in Group D with Jordan, Australia and the UAE. They will meet Jordan tomorrow, Australia on January 17 and the UAE three days later.

The top three teams of the championship will qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics men’s football tournament in Brazil.

Dummett denies Man Utd, Lescott ends Aston Villa wait

Paul Dummett’s deflected 90th-minute equaliser denied Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United a morale-boosting victory as Newcastle United snatched a thrilling 3-3 draw in the Premier League on Tuesday (Jan 12).

wayne-rooney

Wayne Rooney completed a brace with a stunning 79th-minute goal to put United 3-2 up, after a 2-0 advantage procured by goals from himself and Jesse Lingard had been wiped out by Georginio Wijnaldum and Aleksandar Mitrovic.

But with United manager Van Gaal contemplating a win that would have gone some way to repairing the damage caused by Saturday’s insipid 1-0 win over third-tier Sheffield United in the FA Cup, Dummett slammed home to prevent the visitors drawing level with fourth-place Tottenham Hotspur.

“Of course it feels like a defeat,” said Van Gaal, whose side visit arch rivals Liverpool on Sunday. “We have given it away. I have told that to my players. We could have scored six goals easily here, and we did not.”

United were left two points off the Champions League places in sixth place, with West Ham United moving above them, and could lose further ground after Wednesday’s matches.

Newcastle inched to within a point of safety and while they remain in the relegation zone, manager Steve McClaren will have drawn great encouragement from his side’s refusal to be beaten. “We kept fighting until the end and we have got a goal that feels like a winner,” he said.

An eventful evening at St James’ Park began prior to kick-off, with Newcastle presenting new signings Jonjo Shelvey and Henri Saivet to the crowd before honouring late former goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek with a minute’s applause.

The former Czech Republic international, a veteran of several classic clashes between Newcastle and United in the mid-1990s, died of a heart attack aged 47 in late December.

The visitors quickly took control, with Rooney sending Rob Elliot the wrong way from the penalty spot in the ninth minute after referee Mike Dean penalised Chancel Mbemba for handball.

Rooney spurned a chance to inflate United’s lead when he shot wide from Lingard’s through-ball, but in the 38th minute he created their second goal with a delightful reverse pass that allowed Lingard to slot a shot between Elliot’s legs.

VALENCIA AT THE DOUBLE

Wijnaldum sounded the Newcastle revolt four minutes later, neatly volleying in his eighth goal of the season after Marouane Fellaini had headed Fabricio Coloccini’s flighted pass into his path.

After United goalkeeper David de Gea had blocked from Moussa Sissoko and Lingard had curled wastefully over at the other end, Newcastle equalised in the 67th minute.

Chris Smalling was penalised for wrestling with Mitrovic at a corner and the Serbian firebrand picked himself up to tuck the resulting penalty past De Gea.

With 11 minutes to play Rooney restored United’s lead, lashing a glorious first-time shot into the top-left corner from 20 yards after substitute Memphis Depay’s shot cannoned into his path via a pair of defenders.

But Welsh left-back Dummett had the final say with a rasping left-foot effort from the edge of the box that flicked off Smalling and zipped into the top-left corner.

Elsewhere, centre-back Joleon Lescott scored with a 58th-minute header as bottom club Aston Villa beat Crystal Palace 1-0 to end a club-record run of 19 league games without victory.

It also gave Villa manager Remi Garde his first win at the 11th attempt, although his side remain eight points from safety. “We suffered so much in the previous weeks and today we are very happy,” said the Frenchman. “The players showed pride and we deserved to win.”

In the day’s other game, Dimitri Payet netted a glorious free-kick and Enner Valencia scored twice as West Ham came from behind to win 3-1 at Bournemouth, who had gone ahead through Harry Arter.

Slaven Bilic’s West Ham climb above Manchester United to fifth place, just a point off the Champions League places, while Bournemouth remain 16th.

Derby pose fresh threat to Van Gaal in FA Cup

Louis van Gaal has been handed another potentially embarrassing FA Cup test after Manchester United were drawn against Derby in the fourth round.

manchester-united-s-dutch
Van Gaal came under fire from United fans after his spluttering side laboured to a 1-0 victory over third tier Sheffield United in the third round at Old Trafford on Saturday. It took a stoppage-time penalty from Wayne Rooney to spare United from a replay against the Blades.

But Championship promotion chasers Derby are likely to provide another tricky tie for Van Gaal’s side. Derby, managed by former Chelsea and Real Madrid assistant Paul Clement, are second in the Championship as they chase promotion to the top-flight.

Holders Arsenal, 3-1 winners over Sunderland in the third round and bidding to lift the trophy for the third year in succession, have been handed a home tie against Burnley.

Manchester City will travel to either League Two club Wycombe or Aston Villa, who drew 1-1 on Saturday.

Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw by fourth tier Exeter and the winner of that replay will entertain West Ham.

National League outfit Eastleigh, the lowest ranked team left in the competition, will host Championship side Leeds if they can see off Bolton in a replay.

Harry Kane’s late penalty kept Tottenham in the competition and if Spurs win their replay against Leicester, a trip to third tier Colchester awaits.

Crystal Palace tackle Stoke in an all-Premier League tie while fourth tier Oxford, who stunned Premier League strugglers Swansea on Sunday, must wait to discover if they will host their League Two rivals Newport or second tier Blackburn.

If West Bromwich Albion manage to get past Bristol City in a replay they will welcome Peterborough, while Everton will visit either Carlisle or Yeovil.

Watford travel to Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth could enjoy a short trip to Fratton Park if local rivals Portsmouth can overcome Ipswich.

Newcastle swoop for Bordeaux’s Saivet

Newcastle have signed Senegal midfielder Henri Saivet from French club Bordeaux, the Premier League strugglers confirmed on Monday (Jan 11).

henri-saivet

Saivet has moved to St James’ Park for a reported fee of around £5 million.

The 25-year-old, who was Bordeaux’s captain, agreed a five-and-a-half-year contract and is Newcastle’s first signing of the January transfer window.

“I am very happy to be here at Newcastle. I am really proud to be able to play for this club, and I am really excited at the challenge that lies ahead,” Saivet told Newcastle’s website.

“St James’ Park is a really impressive and special stadium. In France, there is nothing that compares to this, and I can’t wait to get out there with my new team-mates and help the team climb the table.”

Saivet joins a Newcastle team in the midst of a relegation battle, with Steve McClaren’s side 18th place in the Premier League having lost their last four games in all competitions 1-0.

“Henri is someone the club has been watching for a while, and he has developed into an excellent player at Bordeaux,” McClaren said.

“This is someone with a very good mentality, who is a tough player and a winner. Those are key qualities you need in the Premier League and we are looking forward to seeing him pulling on the Newcastle United shirt.”

Saivet came through the ranks at Bordeaux, making his senior debut at the age of 17 and going on to score 23 goals in 178 appearances.
