Sunderland swoop for Bayern defender Kirchhoff

Sunderland have made their first signing of the January transfer window with a swoop for Bayern Munich defender Jan Kirchhoff, the struggling Premier League club announced on Thursday (Jan 7).

Kirchhoff agreed an 18-month contract for a fee reported to be in the region of £750,000 (US$1.09 million).

The 25-year-old centre-back moved to Bayern from Mainz in 2013 and went on to spend two spells on loan with Bundesliga rivals Schalke.

“He has good pedigree – he started playing first team football at 17 or 18 years old at Mainz and that he progressed to a club as big as Bayern Munich shows he has talent,” Allardyce told Sunderland’s website.

“He’s frustrated at not being able to play a bigger part in Bayern’s team in the time he’s been there and he wants to experience the Premier League.”

Allardyce moved for Kirchhoff after missing out on QPR’s Steven Caulker and Lorient’s Lamine Gassama.

Messi double eases Barcelona past nine-man Espanyol

A Lionel Messi-inspired Barcelona reacted from the shock of conceding early to edge towards the Copa del Rey quarter-finals with a 4-1 win over nine-man Espanyol on Wednesday (Jan 6).

Espanyol held the European champions 0-0 in a bad-tempered first of three meetings between the sides in 10 days at the weekend and threatened an upset early on through Felipe Caicedo’s composed finish.

Yet, Messi took just four minutes to restore parity before blasting a stunning free-kick in off the underside of the bar just before half-time.

The Argentine teed up Gerard Pique for a third and then Neymar for a sensational volleyed finish two minutes from time to hand Barca a commanding advantage ahead of the second leg on January 13.

However, Messi was lucky to escape without being seriously injured after being violently stamped on by Espanyol goalkeeper Pau Lopez without any action taken by the officials before Hernan Perez and Papakouli Diop were dismissed.

Arda Turan was handed his Barca debut after joining from Atletico Madrid in July as the Catalans’ year-long ban on registering new players came to an end on Monday.

Yet, Barca were stunned on nine minutes when on-loan Real Madrid midfielder Marco Asensio robbed Dani Alves and played in Caicedo to slot home.

A wonderful through ball from Andres Iniesta ensured the lead was short-lived as Messi fired past Lopez. And there was little the ‘keeper could do to stop a bullet of a free-kick from fully 30 yards.

Brilliant passes from Iniesta and Messi then teed up Pique for an easy finish to all but kill the tie off.

Espanyol lost their cool in the final quarter as Lopez somehow escaped with a blatant stamp on Messi inside the area before Perez and Diop were sent-off in a four-minute spell. And Neymar finally made the visitors pay when he volleyed home first time from Messi’s scooped pass.

Elsewhere, Alvaro Negredo scored a hat-trick as Gary Neville enjoyed just his second win in seven games in charge of Valencia with a 4-0 thrashing of Granada.

“We are going in the right direction,” said Neville. “We are better physically, in our play and our confidence, but obviously we have a long way to go and we can’t get carried away with just one win.”

Athletic Bilbao produced a stirring second-half comeback from 2-0 down to take a 3-2 lead into the second leg of their last-16 tie against Villarreal.

The visitors counter-attacked to perfection before the break to take a commanding lead through Leo Baptistao and Samu Garcia despite resting a host of first-team regulars to prioritise their push for a top-four finish in La Liga.

However, Inaki Williams’s early strike after half-time brought last year’s finalists back into the game before Aritz Aduriz came off the bench to score his 22nd goal of the season and Aymeric Laporte rounded off the comeback 10 minutes from time.

Sevilla took control of their tie in the first of three derbies on Wednesday as goals either side of half-time from Michael Krohn-Dehli and Grzegorz Krychowiak handed them a 2-0 win at Real Betis.

Mirandes, one of only two sides from outside the top flight left in the competition, maintained their hopes of reaching the last eight as Alberto Lopo’s late equaliser rescued a 1-1 draw for Deportivo la Coruna.

La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid also face a derby later against Rayo Vallecano.

Spanish Copa del Rey last-16, first leg results:

Athletic Bilbao 3 Villarreal 2

Mirandes 1 Deportivo la Coruna 1

Valencia 4 Granada 0

Real Betis 0 Sevilla 2

Barcelona 4 Espanyol 1

Rayo Vallecano 1 Atletico Madrid 1

Lukaku gives Everton semi-final edge over Man City

Romelu Lukaku’s 19th goal of the season gave Everton a 2-1 win over Manchester City in their League Cup semi-final first leg clash on Wednesday (Jan 6).

mancity-1
Everton haven’t lifted a trophy since the 1995 FA Cup but they took a step closer to Wembley and a possible repeat of their 1984 League Cup final with local rivals Liverpool thanks to Lukaku’s late winner.

Liverpool lead Stoke 1-0 from the first leg of their semi-final and Manchester City will still be hopeful of turning this tie round as they look to repeat their 2014 success in the competition.

When Jesus Navas cancelled out Ramiro Funes Mori’s first-half goal, City looked to hold a slender advantage ahead of the home leg in three weeks’ time but Lukaku’s headed goal 12 minutes from the end means the underdogs hold sway.

Having won only three of their 11 Premier League games at Goodison Park this season – conceding 20 goals in the process – home advantage could have been seen as negligible for Everton as they looked to reach the semi-finals of the competition for the first time since 2008.

City’s win at Watford last Saturday was their first away from home in the league since September but they did score four times in winning at Sunderland to launch their League Cup run and had rattled in 13 goals in three ties to reach the last four.

They started as they meant to go on as they continue a pursuit of four possible trophies with all the possession in Everton’s half in the opening stages.

But Roberto Martinez – who masterminded Wigan’s shock FA Cup final win over City in 2013 before joining Everton as manager later that month – is happy for his team to soak up early pressure as he tries to solve Everton’s defensive problems.

And having kept City at arm’s length, bar a header from Nicolas Otamendi which went just wide following a corner, Everton grew into the game as an attacking threat.

Twice the home side had the ball in the net but John Stones and Lukaku were rightly penalised for off-side.

But then after Sergio Aguero had gone close for City with efforts saved by Joel Robles and blocked by Funes Mori they did make an effort count by taking the lead a minute into first-half stoppage time.

SECOND GOAL

Again Lukaku strayed into an off-side position but the ball dropped instead for Funes Mori after Willy Caballero had saved Ross Barkley’s fierce shot following a corner and the defender hooked in his second goal for the club.

Everton didn’t let the tempo drop as they looked to push home their advantage after the break with Gerard Deulofeu testing Caballero with an attempted chip.

The City keeper, deputising for rested England number one Joe Hart, then made a better save to deny Barkley after the midfielder had brushed aside Otamendi and raced into the box to create a shooting chance.

But the visitors began to threaten themselves as they looked to level a pulsating tie.

Aguero sliced an effort wide after being set up by David Silva and Robles was then grateful to grab a header from Fernandinho following a Navas cross.

The Everton keeper was tested again as Kevin de Bruyne played a one-two with Aguero before curling an effort towards the bottom corner. And City’s pressure paid off with 14 minutes to go when they made it 1-1 with a superb goal on the break.

Fernandinho’s long ball released Aguero and after running at the Everton defence, he slipped the ball into the path of Navas who side-footed home his first goal since September, 2014.

City would have been delighted to have been going back to the Etihad Stadium on level terms but parity lasted just two minutes as Gareth Barry’s cross was powerfully headed home by Lukaku to give Everton the edge.

Duc’s victory was not so surprising to fans as he contributed significantly to helping Binh Duong secure the second consecutive V-League title and win the first-ever National Cup crown last year.

Strikers Nguyen Van Quyet of Hanoi T&T and Le Cong Vinh of Becamex Binh Duong won the men’s Silver and Bronze Ball awards with 237 and 83 points, respectively.

Striker Nguyen Cong Phuong from Hoang Anh Gia Lai won the ‘best young male player’ award, while the women’s title went to Chuong Thi Kieu from Ho Chi Minh City.

Man Utd cut short Januzaj’s Dortmund loan spell

Belgian winger Adnan Januzaj will return to Manchester United for the rest of the season after the Premier League club cut short his loan spell at Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund.

The 20-year-old left Old Trafford last year in search of more first-team opportunities but has endured a largely disappointing spell in Germany, where he has started only three matches.

He has made 12 appearances for Dortmund in total and has not started in the league. His last game for Dortmund was their Europa League defeat by PAOK Salonika on Dec. 10.

“Adnan will rejoin the first-team squad immediately,” United said on their website (www.manutd.com).

Januzaj, who is contracted to United until 2018, made 22 appearances under Louis van Gaal in 2014-15 and scored the winner against Aston Villa in a Premier League match this season before moving to Dortmund.

He emerged under then manager David Moyes in 2013, scoring two goals to secure a 2-1 win for United at Sunderland in his first start for the Premier League club.

United are fifth in the Premier League table, with Van Gaal under increasing pressure to ensure a top-four finish after a series of disappointing performances.

Zidane takes command at Real Madrid

Thousands of Real Madrid fans turned out to cheer Zinedine Zidane as one of the game’s all-time great players started his first day as coach of the Spanish giants.

zinedine-zidane-left

While commentators expressed doubts about the Frenchman’s experience, 5,000 fans packed the Alfredo di Stefano stadium at Real’s training ground to see Zidane take his first session with Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and other superstars.

The 43-year-old Zidane got right down to work within hours of Rafael Benitez being sacked on Monday night.

“Zizou!” “Zizou!” fans chanted as the World Cup winner walked out onto the pitch with his players wearing a grey tracksuit and fluorescent boots.

The Frenchman, whose only previous coaching job was in charge of Castilla, the Real B team, gathered players around him. Then he kicked the ball to start a training exercise, drawing shouts from the crowds.

Real president Florentino Perez sacked Benitez after the Spaniard strugged for seven months to win over Madrid’s fans and leading players.

The club has suffered a year-long slump that has seen them burn through two Champions League-winning coaches – Benitez and Carlo Ancelotti.

They are in third place in La Liga, four points behind leaders Atletico Madrid and two points behind eternal rivals Barcelona, who have a game in hand.

‘HEART AND SOUL’

Madrid were recently booted out of the Copa del Rey for fielding an ineligible player, but they are still in the Champions League, facing Roma in the last 16 next month. And Zidane insisted when his name was announced that his aim is to win a trophy.

“We have the best club in the world, the best fans and what we have to do now, and what I will try my best to do, is ensure the team wins at the end of the season,” said the Frenchman, who played for the club between 2001 and 2006.

“I’m more excited now than I was when I signed as a player. I am going to put my heart and soul into this job so that everything works out well,” he added.

All eyes will now be on whether Zidane has the temperament and tactical ability to gel Madrid’s ‘Galacticos’ into a trophy-winning unit.

Key players such as Karim Benzema and James Rodriguez often showed their disgust when substituted by Benitez. Off-field distractions also took their toll with Benzema facing blackmail charges over a sex-tape of France teammate Mathieu Valbuena, and Rodriguez accused of speeding at up to 200kph (124mph) last week.

Zidane is not known for his communication skills and had a fiery temperament on the field as a player. His career ended with an infamous headbutt on Marco Materazzi in the 2006 World Cup final between France and Italy.

But he is respected by Madrid’s players and adored by their fans for his feats on the field, highlighted by his brilliant winner in the 2002 Champions League final against Bayer Leverkusen.

Spanish media said however that Zidane has his work cut out because of his lack of experience.

“The Frenchman is a football legend and a great figure of Madrid,” wrote Marca, Spain’s most read sports daily. “But his coaching experience is inversely proportional to his excellent footballer’s experience – limited … and controversial.”

He has spent a season and a half in charge of Madrid’s feeder team Castilla, who failed to secure promotion from Spanish football’s third tier last season. But he has the advantage of knowing the players well – he was Ancelotti’s deputy in 2013 and 2014.

And the team appeared relaxed on Tuesday, with players all smiles.

The morning’s tranquility, however, is but a prelude to the global media attention that will fall on Zidane’s afternoon press conference at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium at 1230 GMT.
