Chelsea heading in right direction, says Terry

Chelsea’s recovery has begun, captain John Terry claimed on Tuesday (Dec 29) with the Blues unbeaten in the three games since Jose Mourinho’s departure.

the-desire-in-the-group

A victory over Sunderland has been followed by draws with Watford and Manchester United. A surge up the Premier League table has yet to materialise, however, and the champions remain in 14th place, only three points off the relegation zone.

Chelsea travelled to Old Trafford on Monday to take on a United team that had lost four games in a row, but were unable to make that five as the two struggling giants fought out a 0-0 draw.

The hosts edged the chances, but Chelsea skipper Terry was proud of the performance of his team.

He told Chelsea TV: “I think the desire and the effort was spot on. The work-rate was different class throughout the whole starting XI. But more importantly I just want to say thank you to the fans. I think we owed them that performance and I think they can slowly see the tide turning and us putting in performances and getting results.

“The desire in the group is there for everyone to see the last few games. For whatever reason we weren’t winning games from the start and we are where we are and we have to build upon that and we have to change things around very quickly because, looking at the league table, it’s horrible. With a quick succession of wins we can climb the table quickly.”

The normal order of things in the Premier League has been turned upside down in 2015/16, with the likes of Leicester and Crystal Palace challenging at the top of the table and Chelsea languishing near the bottom three.

“I think it has been bizarre,” said Terry. “Being amongst it has been really difficult and that is credit to teams you wouldn’t expect to win games throughout the year improving their squads and improving individuals.

“It’s now down to us as a group and a club to step up and go again to that next level where we want to be. This year it’s probably too far to go, but the season after that and long when I have gone we have set the levels and we need to keep that year after year.”

Guus Hiddink’s side slipped 19 points behind leaders Arsenal with the draw at Old Trafford and 15 points adrift of the top four.

Although it seems inconceivable they could go down, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is not discounting the possibility, even if, like Terry, he feels Chelsea are heading in the right direction.

He told the club website: “Of course you cannot think it is not possible to get relegated. We look forward and I think with the dynamic we are in now and the games we are playing, soon we will start winning games.”

Blanc says PSG can reach last four of Champions League

Paris Saint-Germain coach Laurent Blanc said on Tuesday (Dec 29) that he thinks his side are ready to reach at least the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in more than 20 years.

paris-saint-germain-s

Speaking ahead of PSG’s friendly clash on Wednesday in Qatar against Italy’s Inter Milan, Blanc said it was right that the pressure was on for PSG to perform in European football’s biggest domestic club competition.

At a joint press conference with Inter coach Roberto Mancini, Blanc said: “A season is judged on every trophy there is to win. In France last year, we had a perfect season but quite rightly, the expectation for a club of our size is to have a big performance in the Champions League.

“To be good in the Champions League, you have to be good in the league. It’s easy to say we need to qualify for the semi-finals, but harder to achieve. “I believe my players are ready to reach that goal this year, however.”

PSG have qualified for the last 16 of the tournament where they will play English champions Chelsea for the third successive season. Chelsea triumphed in 2014 but PSG gained revenge in last season’s competition, before being knocked out by eventual winners Barcelona.

PSG last reached the semi-finals in 1994/95, inspired by the tournament’s top scorer that season, George Weah. They were eventually beaten by AC Milan.

The Parisians have reached the last eight of the tournament in the preceding three seasons.

Blanc added that some players might leave during January but refused to speculate. “I don’t have to answer you on this specific topic as we came here to talk about tomorrow’s game against Inter. We didn’t come here for the market.”

Inter have been linked to PSG winger Ezequiel Lavezzi and the coach of the Italian league leaders Mancini joked that the two sides could talk after the game.

Lavezzi, along with other South American stars who play for PSG, arrived in Doha on Tuesday, two days later than the rest of the side. Mancini added that his team would be taking the friendly seriously.

“Tomorrow we’ll play against Paris Saint-Germain. It is one of the top teams in Europe at the moment but I think that there is one game. Inter-PSG, I think that is a good game.”

The match has caught the imagination of the Qatari public and is a rare sell-out at the 15,000 Jassim Bin Hamad stadium in Doha. The stadium is home to Al Sadd, the team for which former Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez now plays.

Van Gaal handed respite as Man Utd held to goalless draw

Embattled Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal remains on the brink after his struggling side were held to a 0-0 draw by Chelsea, while Arsenal surged to the top of the Premier League with a 2-0 win over Bournemouth on Monday.

United had lost their last four previous games – their worst run within a single season since 1961 – and van Gaal hinted after Saturday’s dismal 2-0 defeat at Stoke that he was thinking about quitting.

United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward had reportedly talked the Dutchman out of resigning earlier in the month as the team’s struggles intensified and it had been suggested van Gaal would either walk out or be sacked if there was no improvement against Chelsea.

Van Gaal’s players, many of whom are said to be unhappy with his tactics, gave a solid enough display. But sixth placed United, without a win in eight games in all competitions, still failed to score at home for sixth time this season – leaving them five points off the top four and their manager still on borrowed time.

“Will I resign? On the contrary,” van Gaal told BT Sport when quizzed on his future in a post-match interview. “When the players can give such a performance with a lot of pressure, there is not any reason to resign for me. Maybe the media wants me to but I shall not resign.”

Juan Mata and Anthony Martial both hit the woodwork for United in the first half, while Wayne Rooney was denied by a fine stop from Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Chelsea captain John Terry had a goalbound header superbly saved by David de Gea, who also kept out a fierce Pedro Rodriguez strike early in the second half.

At the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal rebounded from their 4-0 hammering at Southampton on Saturday with a convincing display that reaffirmed their title credentials and secured a fourth win in their last five league games.

The Gunners are one point clear of second placed Leicester, who can regain pole position if Claudio Ranieri’s surprise title contenders defeat fourth placed Manchester City on Tuesday.

Arsene Wenger’s men were in front when Mesut Ozil’s cross was guided high into the corner of the net by Brazilian defender Gabriel in the 27th minute for his first goal for Arsenal.

It was Ozil’s league leading 16th assist of the season and the German midfielder almost had another before the interval when Gabriel struck a post from his set-piece. Ozil took matters into his own hands again in the 63rd minute as the former Real Madrid star side-footed home from Olivier Giroud’s pass.

There was also a significant milestone for Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech, who set a new Premier League record of 170 clean sheets, with 162 of those coming in his time at Chelsea.

Battling back

West Ham are up to seventh after battling back to defeat Southampton 2-1 at Upton Park. Ronald Koeman’s side went ahead when Dusan Tadic pressured Hammers defender Carl Jenkinson into a 13th minute goal.

But West Ham winger Michail Antonio equalised in bizarre circumstances in the 69th minute when an attempted Southampton clearance hit him on the head and looped over Saints goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg.

Andy Carroll won it in the 79th minute when he drove in the rebound after an Antonio header hit the bar.

Son Heung-min’s 89th-minute strike sent Tottenham third as the South Korea forward sealed a 2-1 win at 10-man Watford.

Tottenham took a 17th-minute lead when Erik Lamela stabbed home following a defensive mix-up, before Odion Ighalo stabbed home his 14th goal of the season to equalise for Watford four minutes before half-time.

But Watford lost Nathan Ake to a red card for a waist-high foul on Lamela in the 63rd minute and Son struck at the death, gathering Kieran Trippier’s half-volleyed pass and beating Heurelho Gomes.

Crystal Palace remain in fifth place, four points below the Champions League berths, following a goalless home draw with Swansea City.

Meanwhile, in-form Austrian forward Marko Arnautovic scored a stoppage-time winner from the penalty spot as Stoke City edged Everton 4-3 in a thrilling game at Goodison Park.

Stoke twice went ahead through Xherdan Shaqiri, only for Romelu Lukaku to equalise twice.

Gerard Deulofeu put Everton ahead from Ross Barkley’s pass in the 71st minute, but Joselu drew Stoke level 10 minutes from time before Arnautovic settled the game from the spot after he had been fouled by John Stones.

Goals in each half from Jonny Howson and Dieumerci Mbokani gave Norwich City a 2-0 win over Aston Villa that left the Midlands club 11 points adrift of safety at the foot of the table.

Newcastle United also remain in the bottom three after falling to a 78th-minute Darren Fletcher header in a 1-0 defeat at West Bromwich Albion.

Crystal Palace 0 Swansea 0

VN player signs with Korean FC

Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) midfielder Luong Xuan Truong signed a two-year loan deal with K-League’s Incheon United in HCM City yesterday.

The Tuyen Quang Province-born footballer Truong inked a US$3,000 per month deal.

Truong said that playing for Incheon United would be a big turning-point in his career.

According to Incheon United’s managing director Jung Eui Suk, Truong is the first Vietnamese player to sign for the club.

Earlier, two other HAGL players signed contracts with Japanese clubs.

Mito HollyHock, a second division Japanese football club, signed attacking midfielder Nguyen Cong Phuong, dubbed the “Messi of Viet Nam”, for a loan running from pre-season training in January through to December next year.

The club also sent midfielder Nguyen Tuan Anh to Japan’s Yokohama Football Club on a one-year loan.

Inspired Ozil fires Arsenal to top spot

Arsenal’s title challenge is back on track following a 2-0 victory over Bournemouth on Monday (Dec 28) which sent them to the top of the Premier League and saw goalkeeper Petr Cech set a new clean-sheet record.

Goals from Gabriel and Mesut Ozil, who was again Arsenal’s key performer, were enough for the Gunners to settle a few nerves following a shock 4-0 defeat at Southampton two days earlier.

The victory also marked an important landmark for Cech who kept his 170th clean sheet in the Premier League – most of them in Chelsea colours – to overtake the previous mark set by David James.

With former leaders Leicester due to play fourth-placed Manchester City 24 hours after this fixture, the result leaves Arsenal one point clear at the top of the table – and goes some way to answering criticism that Arsene Wenger’s side were starting to buckle under the pressure of trying to win the title for the first time since 2004.

If you took only history into account then this fixture would be one of the most uneven the Premier League has ever seen – mighty Arsenal, 13-time champions, 12-time FA Cup winners and perennial Champions League participants against a club that was playing in the fourth tier of English football only 12 years ago.

But there’s a lot more to English football than that and there was not a huge chasm between the teams as Arsenal ground out a crucial three points.

Bournemouth, renowned for their attractive style of play, went into the game having not lost since early November, including morale-boosting victories over Chelsea and Manchester United.

Arsenal by contrast had seen their own six-match unbeaten run brutally ended by Southampton in defeat at St Mary’s, a result which almost instantly deflated the euphoria which had been building in north London.

Mercurial

Perhaps that is why the atmosphere at the Emirates was so muted at the start of a match that Wenger’s side simply could not afford to lose. Gabriel’s header from an Ozil corner after 27 minutes, however, soon settled those nerves.

Set-pieces have been Bournemouth’s Achilles heel all season and the Brazilian defender was totally unmarked as he stooped to head home at the far post.

Gabriel, in fact, was one of four players brought into the Arsenal side by Wenger following that miserable evening on the south coast, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Calum Chambers and Kieran Gibbs also selected in a rare shake-up – and Lauren Koscielny surprisingly left on the bench.

Gabriel justified that faith as he hit the post with another header from another Ozil corner minutes later, the ball bouncing back off the upright onto Per Mertesacker and dropping wide.

Gabriel was also outstanding in defence and the game was effectively over when the mercurial Ozil played a delightful one-two with Olivier Giroud before accepting the Frenchman’s back-heeled pass and sliding the ball home in the 63rd minute.

Arsenal, who missed a string of chances to add to their lead, now face struggling Newcastle at home next weekend before potentially more difficult fixtures against Liverpool, Stoke and Chelsea.

Everton 3 – Stoke 4

Chelsea frustrate Manchester United

Manchester United’s winless run stretched to eight games but they did show encouraging signs in a 0-0 draw against Chelsea at Old Trafford on Monday evening.

w638_h359_at__111926

Match Summary
Lead by a resurgent Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Anthony Martial were both denied by the woodwork as Manchester United made a lively start in front of the expectant crowd.
Chelsea became increasingly dangerous as the game progressed and David de Gea was at his absolute best to deny Pedro and Cesar Azpilicueta in quick succession shortly after the restart.
Nemanja Matic wasted Chelsea’s best chance of the evening by blazing wildly over when left one-on-one with the Manchester United goalkeeper.
Full Report
Polite applause greeted the under-pressure Van Gaal as he made his way to the Manchester United hotseat, and the Dutchman would have been delighted with his side’s energetic start.
Within the first two minutes, Juan Mata collected Rooney’s cute inside pass and saw his quick snapshot from 20 yards cannon back off the woodwork.
Martial then suffered a similar fate 13 minutes later; operating on the left flank, he drove inside and struck the foot of the near post from close range as the deep defensive block of Chelsea continued to live very dangerously.
The young Frenchman embarked on a carbon-copy run soon after, which left referee Martin Atkinson to make his first big decision of the evening as Martial was blocked off in the area by Kurt Zouma. The half-hearted appeals from players and home fans alike were turned away.
Rooney looked particularly eager to prove a point to his critics and unleashed a fierce drive from distance, which had Courtois at full-stretch in the Chelsea goal.
Guus Hiddink’s side, playing without a recognised striker as Diego Costa sat out through suspension, were forced to rely on set-pieces for their sporadic attacks.
John Terry’s header in the fifth minute from a Chelsea corner was tipped over by an alert David de Gea in the visitor’s only clear chance in a largely forgettable first half for the Blues.
Chelsea immediately looked more dangerous after the restart, and Pedro and Azpilicueta looked on in dismay as De Gea produced a wonderful double save to deny both of his Spanish counterparts.
Courtois then upstaged the Manchester United goalkeeper with 55 minutes on the clock as he somehow clawed Ander Herrera’s side-foot shot from five yards away to safety.
Manchester United’s vulnerability made a sudden reappearance just after the hour mark as they were left completely exposed to a Chelsea counter attack. Pedro surged down the right and played Matic through on goal, who subsequently blazed over with just De Gea to beat.
Van Gaal introduced Memphis Depay with 13 minutes to spare, but the goalmouth action dried and left the sides to settle for a point.

Magical Ozil fires Arsenal top

Mesut Ozil produced a phenomenal display to fire Arsenal back to the top of the Premier League as the Gunners ran out 2-0 winners over Bournemouth at the Emirates on Monday evening

w638_h359_at__111927

Match Summary
The visitors perhaps acclimatised to their surroundings better than their hosts but it was Arsene Wenger’s side who opened the scoring through defender Gabriel, who grabbed his first goal for the Gunners just before the half-hour mark.
Arsenal then doubled their lead on 63 minutes after some phenomenal play between Ozil and Olivier Giroud fed the German in to slot home from close range, and that was enough to see the Gunners overhaul Leicester City and reclaim top spot in the Premier League.
Full Report
Bournemouth began on the front foot, winning the first corner of the game before fit-again striker Josh King stung the hands of Petr Cech in the Arsenal goal.
The hosts struggled to get to grips with the pace of the match, but managed to produce a counter attack as Aaron Ramsey snatched a loose ball in midfield. It was fed out wide to the left but Giroud couldn’t find Ozil before it was cleared to safety by the Bournemouth defence.
Harry Arter then threatened to find King in the Gunners box but the forward was smothered before being able to work a shot on goal for the visitors.
The game continued to be devoid of any real quality as both sides looked visibly tired from their Boxing Day exploits.
It was the Gunners, though, who broke the deadlock with a set-piece as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain won a corner just before the half-hour mark and defender Gabriel duly obliged to nod home a beautifully whipped delivery from Ozil.
Arsenal then started to dominate proceedings and Theo Walcott squandering a wonderful opportunity to double the lead after a ball in from the right from Ozil found the England man, before defender Per Mertesacker headed wide from just two-yards out after Bournemouth keeper Artur Boruc palmed a Gabriel shot onto the post.
After the visitors’ strong start the Cherries ended the first period camped inside their own half, with Arsenal passing the ball around the Emirates’ slick surface with ease as referee Roger East brought the half to a close.
The visitors again started the better of the two sides in the early exchanges of the second half, and the Cherries posed a real threat to the Gunners’ clean sheet as King fired across goal in an attempt to find substitute Junior Stanislas but Gabriel was on hand to clear the danger away.
It was the Gunners, though, who doubled their lead against the run of play after some magical football between Ozil and Giroud. The Frenchman, with his back to goal, provided a cute flick back to Ozil, who casually slotted home from close range as the Cherries defence could only watch on mesmerised by the German’s ability.
Oxlade-Chamberlain came the closest to adding a third in the dying stages of the game as he cut inside the Bournemouth box and saw his deflected effort fly inches wide of the post with Boruc rooted to the spot, and that’s the way it finished as Arsenal cruised to an easy victory to fire themselves back to the top of the Premier League.
