Valencia 2-1 Gent: Mitrovic own goal hands Los Che the points

The Liga side took another step towards the last 16 of the Champions League with a hard-fought home win over the Belgians on Tuesday night

A Stefan Mitrovic own goal denied Gent what would have been a hard-fought point as they suffered a 2-1 Champions League defeat at Valencia on Tuesday.

Sofiane Feghouli put the home side in front after 15 minutes, before Matz Sels produced a string of excellent saves to keep his side in contention.

Thomas Foket then pulled the Belgians level by rifling a shot high into the Valencia net five minutes from the interval.

That equaliser revitalised the visitors and Valencia were second best for much of the second period.

However, a Jose Gaya drive from the left struck Mitrovic in the six-yard box and bounced over the line to spare the hosts’ blushes in the 72nd minute.

The result sees Valencia remain three points adrift of Group H leaders Zenit – who beat Lyon 3-1 – while Gent are still without a win in this year’s competition.

Valencia dominated the early stages, but wild efforts from Andre Gomes and Santi Mina saw their initial pressure go unrewarded.

Sels arrived at the feet of Mina to deny the hosts a simpler shot at goal from close range after nine minutes, before Shkodran Mustafi – almost completely unmarked in the box – headed narrowly over from a corner.

Valencia eventually made the breakthrough when Feghouli bundled the ball over the line after Paco Alcacer had got a touch to Joao Cancelo’s cross from the right.

And the Spanish side would have been further in front had Sels not produced a superb double save – diving to his left to keep out a Gomes strike before recovering to turn Dani Parejo’s follow-up behind.

The resulting corner led to a chance for Aderlan Santos in the centre of the box, but Sels was again on hand to make the save from the defender’s low drive.

Although Gent did make the occasional foray into the opposition half, their threat was limited.

That was until Foket got on the end of a delightful Renato Neto ball over the top and powered a left-footed effort high beyond home goalkeeper Jaume Domenech.

Alcacer lifted the ball over Sels and the crossbar early in the second period, but Valencia’s first-half dominance seemed to have deserted them.

Indeed, Gent had Valencia rattled and looked capable of pulling off an upset against their more fancied La Liga opponents.

But Valencia got lucky. Cancelo’s cross from the right bounced off the top of the crossbar and fell to Gaya, whose effort went in off the unfortunate Mitrovic.

Domenech made a strong diving save to deny Thomas Matton as Gent attempted to restore parity and, though they continued to press, Hein Vanhaezebrouck’s men were left to reflect on a missed opportunity to claim a memorable point – a dismissed stoppage-time penalty shout for a Danilo challenge on Kenny Saief rubbing salt in the wound.

Bayer Leverkusen 4-4 Roma: Stunning late comeback earns a hosts a point

Both sides were guilty of squandering two goal leads in a Champions League encounter which produced plenty of drama

2111022_heroa

Bayer Leverkusen scored twice in the last 10 minutes to grab a point after initially squandering a two-goal lead in a thrilling 4-4 draw with Roma in Champions League action on Tuesday.

Goals from Kevin Kampl and Admir Mehmedi saw the hosts rally in the closing stages at BayArena, denying Roma their first away win in the competition since November 2010.

The Italians had led 4-2, with goals from Miralem Pjanic and Iago Falque putting them two clear after Daniele De Rossi’s brace had cancelled out Javier Hernandez’s early double for Leverkusen.

However, Leverkusen – who had knocked out Roma’s city rivals Lazio to qualify for the group stages – finished strongly as a see-saw Group E clash ended all square.

The draw leaves Leverkusen second in the group, three points behind leaders Barcelona while Roma remain propping up the table with two points from three matches.

There was little sign of the drama to come when the German side raced into an early 2-0 advantage, Hernandez getting their first from the penalty spot after just three minutes.

Vasilis Torosidis was adjudged to have blocked Hakan Calhanoglu’s left-wing cross with his arm, allowing Hernandez to send Wojciech Szczesny the wrong way from 12 yards.

The former Manchester United forward did not have to wait too long for his second, though he was helped out by some shoddy Roma defending on 19 minutes.

Lucas Digne was guilty of losing the ball near his own goal and, with Antonio Rudiger playing him onside, Hernandez managed to beat Szczesny at the second attempt after his initial shot rebounded kindly.

Roma cut the deficit in half when De Rossi grabbed his first of the night on the half-hour, Kostas Manolas’ header to the far post allowing the midfielder to slot the chance underneath Bernd Leno.

Hernandez then wasted a glorious chance to complete a first-half hat-trick, heading over on the stretch after Szczesny had failed to get anywhere near a cross from the left.

And De Rossi punished that miss to level before the break, directing home Pjanic’s right-wing cross from close range with his knee.

Having set up the second, Pjanic scored the away side’s third himself, his free-kick floating over the wall and into the top right corner in the 54th minute.

When substitute Falque converted Gervinho’s square pass after 73 minutes, drawing Leno off his line before lifting the ball over the top of the goalkeeper, the game seemed to be up for Leverkusen.

But Kampl curled home a stunning effort with his left foot to make it 4-3 and, with four minutes remaining, Mehmedi arrived at just the right time at the far post to tap home an equaliser.

Malaysia beat VN for bronze

Saiful Nizam sneaked a winner a minute from time for Malaysia to beat Viet Nam 6-5 and take the bronze at the ASEAN Football Federation Futsal Championship in Bangkok yesterday.

Thua Malaysia, Futsal Việt Nam trắng tay

The gold medal went to 10-times winner Thailand who beat Australia 5-3 in the final match later.

Malaysia had trailed the Vietnamese right from the start and were trailing 5-4 when they hammered in the equaliser in the 16th minute. With time running out Malaysia were awarded a free kick and Fawzul calmly flicked it in.

Viet Nam controlled much of the game while taking the lead, and could have wrapped up the game had they made better use of their chances.

They launched numerous offensives and in the fourth minute, VuXuan Du broke down the left and crossed to Duong Anh Tung who easily scored the opening goal of the playoff.

Du doubled the score as he scrambled the ball into the goal in the 10th minute.

While Viet Nam was in-charge, the Malaysians waited for chances to break away and take a crack at goal.

Their efforts paid off two minutes later when Mohd Khairul Effendy Mohd Bahrin raced in and blasted his team’s first goal.

Danh Phat added the third goal for Viet Nam at the 14th mark after he raced down the left and drove his grounder surprisingly past the keeper and into the far corner.

Malaysia reduced the gap shortly after a brilliant run from Muhamad Fitri Muhamad Yatim ended with a sizzler past the Vietnamese keeper Ngo Duc Thuan.

With time running out, the Malaysians were awarded a free kick when Pham Duc Hoa brought down Muhammad Shamsul Akmar Zamri. Nizam stepped up and rammed the shot into the top corner to make the score 3-3.

Soon after the break, Viet Nam regained the lead with Le Quoc Nam scoring in the third minute. Viet Nam stretched the lead to 5-3 in the 30th minute through Ngo Ngoc Son.

To the surprise of all including the fans who had packed the stadium, Malaysia charged back to reel in three goals.

Nizam struck in the 32nd minute and with a minute to go, he completed his hattrick bringing in the bronze medal for his team

Chinh joins top five U19 players in ASEAN

The Football Channel Asia has chosen Vietnamese striker Ha Duc Chinh as one of the five best U19 players in the Southeast Asian region.

chinh
Chinh’s performance won Viet Nam four goals at the ASEAN Football Federation’s U19 Youth Championship in September. Later, he grabbed a hat trick at the Asian tournament 2016 in early October.

“Ha Duc Chinh is the top striker of Viet Nam’s U19 in the AFF U19 Championship. However, he did not get much appreciation from the supporters after he missed many chances (to score) during this tournament,” the website said.

“However, coach Hoang Anh Tuan still had faith in him for the AFC U19 Championship qualifiers campaign, and Chinh rewarded this faith with two goals to help Viet Nam beat Hong Kong, 3-1, in the opening match.

“In the last game against Myanmar, he also scored the only goal, helping Viet Nam win the match, 1-0, and qualify for the finals as Group G winners.”

Other players on the top five U19 list are Irfan Fandi of Singapore, Muhammad Chew of Malaysia and Suksan Mungpao and Worachit Kanitsribampen of Thailand.

Fake Facebook post says Vietnam’s football coach will resign

Supporters of the Vietnamese national football (soccer) team were shocked to read head coach Toshiya Miura hinting at the possibility of resignation, or so they thought.

screen-shot-2015-10-15-at-093436-1444880312
The Japanese coach, who took the helm in May 2014, purportedly said he “will not coach [the Vietnamese team] anymore,” in a status update on an unverified Facebook page named Miura Toshiya on Wednesday.
The post came just one day after Vietnam conceded a 0-3 home defeat against Thailand in the Asian World Cup qualifying round.
The status update said Miura was truly pained by the match where Thailand were far too strong for Vietnam.
“We lost but the fans still not turned to us. Thank you, maybe later I will not train you anymore but I am very happy and thank you very much. Goodbye! (sic),” the status reads.
Even though the post came from an unverified Facebook account, a screenshot of it immediately went viral on the social network, with fans saying thanks and sharing their sympathy with the coach.

Miura is not known as a Facebook user by his Vietnamese colleagues and assistants.
He had never talked about his Facebook account before the dubious page under his name surfaced.
Tran Quoc Tuan, deputy chairman of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Thursday that he had not been briefed about the alleged resignation of Miura.
“I asked VFF general secretary Le Hoai Anh but he asserted that it was false information,” Tuan said.
Bong Da (Football) newspaper said it had contacted Miura via text-messaging and was told that the Japanese coach had never used Facebook, so such an account is fake.
Miura quickly won support from local fans and the press when he began the job with the Vietnamese national and under-23 teams, as he led both squads to several impressive victories.
But 2015 has not been a good year for Miura. In the wake of several uninspiring games, the Thailand defeat is a new low.
In September, Miura was also criticized for the Vietnamese style of play, promoting what they called a lackluster, pro-violence game style.
The Japanese coach also tends to ask his men to commit fouls more frequently, reacting as if nothing has happened when penalized by referees.
Despite the run of poor results, the VFF is still in favor of the coach, saying he did help Vietnam win several important games, including a third place at the 2014 AFF Suzuki Cup and the 2015 Southeast Asian Games.
He also led Vietnam to the 2016 AFC U-23 Championship finals, to take place in Qatar in January.
“Miura started the Vietnam job at a time when the national and U-23 teams lacked achievement,” Anh, the VFF general secretary, said at a recent meeting.
“But we should not forget several good results he has had with the teams.”
With Vietnam’s football struggling to improve, the General Department of Sports and Physical Training is slated to hold a conference to remedy the situation.
The event, scheduled to take place in Hanoi in December, is expected to let football experts, analysts, coaches, club managers, and even scientists discuss ways to revitalize football in Vietnam.

Thais beat VN in ASEAN Futsal

Thailand ended Viet Nam’s hopes with a crushing 0-6 victory in the ASEAN Football Federation Futsal Championship in Bangkok yesterday.

Tuyển Việt Nam không thể vượt qua Thái Lan

As the minnows, Vietnamese players felt free to kick off their game and created a number of chances which however were not converted into an opening goal.

Among their opportunities was a shot by Pham Duc Hoa in the 13th minute but it was saved.

Viet Nam, which started without Ngo Dinh Thuan and No 1 keeper Phung Trong Luan, who were both suspended for this game, were all over their rivals and restricted their movements.

As the defending champion and the title favourite Thailand had no difficulty in dominating a rival which was much lower in the world rankings.

Thailand nearly had a goal near the first half but substitute goalie Vu Xuan Du managed to sneak in and clear the ball just as it was about the roll over the line. Suphawut Thueanklang waltzed past a defender and slipped the ball past the onrushing keeper, only to watch it being knocked away by Du.

The hosts turned up the heat in the second half to deliver a stunning performance in front of a capacity crowd of 12,000 excited fans at the Bangkok Arena.

They slowly unravelled the Vietnamese defence and eventually opened the account much to the delight of their fans.

Jirawat Sornwichian pounced on a defensive error to score in the 29th mark. A minute later, Nattavut Madyalan blasted Thailand further ahead.

Suphawut destroyed the Vietnamese defenders and their spirits with two more goals.

A few minutes later, Thailand had two more goals.

The 10-time champions Thailand will either face Australia in the final while Viet Nam will vie for the bronze medal against Malaysia tomorrow night.

All four teams have won their tickets to the final round of the Asian Football Confederation Futsal Championship 2016 in Uzbekistan next February

Thailand beat Viet Nam 3-0 in Asia Zone qualifiers

Thailand beat Viet Nam 3-0 to lead the group F in the 2018 FIFA World Cup/2019 AFC Asian Cup joint-qualifiers at Ha Noi’s My Dinh Stadium yesterday.

Việt Nam thua toàn diện trước Thái Lan

Thailand ranked top in the group with 10 points after three wins and one draw, five points ahead of runners-up Iraq, who will play Taiwan in the last game of the table.

The win at away home turf helped Thailand advance to the 2019 AFC Asian Cup finals and the final round of qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The visitors started the game slowly, but suddenly found their first chance in the 18th minute when striker Teerasil Dangda launched a close-range shot, but Vietnamese keeper Tran Nguyen Manh saved it.

Strikers Le Cong Vinh and Mac Hong Quan did their best to equalise the score after the first loss, but their shots went wide out the bar.

Thai striker Kroekrit Thaweekarn opened the score for Thailand in the 29th minute with teamwork from Dangda.

Having drawn the first blood, Thailand kept their momentum and dominated with powerful attacks.

Pokkhao Anan fired a long-range shot to hit the bar in the last minute of the first half as Thailand led the first half 1-0.

Japanese coach Toshyia Miura sent two strikers to boost attacks in the second half, but Thai coach Kiatisak Senamuang set up a strong defence.

In the 56th minute, Vietnamese defender Dinh Tien Thanh made his own goal in an attempt to block a cross from Thailand’s Kroekrit Thaweekarn.

Having the advantage with a 2-0 lead, Thailand controlled most of the game.

Captain Theerathorn Bunmathan scored a goal in the 70th to complete a convincing win for Thailand.

The hosts made some good efforts in the last several minutes, but they failed to net a single goal in the game.

Viet Nam has taken only two wins and four draws in 20 matches against Thailand since 1995.
