Aguero: I can take Messi’s number 10

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero says that he is ready to wear the number 10 shirt for Argentina in the absence of Lionel Messi.

w638_h359_at__86778
The iconic digit is closely associated with the Barcelona star, along with national hero Diego Maradona, but with the 28-year-old sidelined with a knee injury the shirt gets passed on to Kun.
“I spoke to the kitman and he told me it is obligatory,” Aguero told his club’s official website. “Someone has to use it because the numbers go from 1 to 23.”
“I wore it for the first time against Bosnia, in a friendly in the United States, and Leo said: ‘When I am not around, Kun has to use it.’ Then he started to send me messages: ‘Are you going to wear it? You’re not going to chicken out?’
“Now every time he is absent it is up to me to wear it. I am happy to pull on the shirt, but it obviously belongs to him.”
With Messi set to miss out on Argentina’s World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador on Friday and Paraguay on Wednesday, Aguero is expected to fill his boots as well as his shirt.
“It is a bit strange because Leo has always been here with us, but these things happen in football, we have great players here and we can do well without him,” Aguero added.
“Obviously it is different without him but we can still make a good start. Messi is Messi, he is irreplaceable. But there is a great team here which can make his absence felt less sharply.
“Now the key is winning, picking up three points. We are playing at home, it is a long time since Argentina has seen us and we have to play well from the start to gain confidence.”

Blatter facing FIFA suspension

FIFA’s ethics committee are believed to have advised that FIFA president Sepp Blatter should be handed a 90-day provisional suspension.

w638_h359_at__86780
The ethics committee met this week after the Swiss attorney general opened criminal proceedings against Blatter in relation to a £1.3m payment made to UEFA President Michel Platini.
Blatter has been accused of signing a contract which was “unfavourable” to football’s governing body and making a “disloyal payment” to Platini. The contract in question is believed to be a 2005 TV rights deal between FIFA and former CONCAF president Jack Warner, who is facing criminal charges.
A final decision on Blatter’s suspension will be made on Thursday by the head of FIFA’s ethics adjudicatory chamber, Hans Joachim Eckhert.
A statement from Blatter’s lawyers said that the 79-year-old had not yet been officially made aware of the committee’s decision.
“We would expect that the ethics committee would want to hear from the president and his counsel, and conduct a thorough review of the evidence, before making any recommendation to take disciplinary action,” the statement read.

Hummels backs Klopp for Liverpool

BVB Dortmund captain Mats Hummels believes that Jurgen Klopp would achieve great success if he were to take over the reins at Liverpool.

w638_h359_at__86789
Klopp is the favourite to replace Brendan Rodgers at the helm of the Reds, with the Ulsterman relieved of his duties following Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Everton in the Merseyside derby.
Having led Dortmund to two Bundesliga titles and a runners-up spot in the 2012/13 Champions League, Klopp certainly has the pedigree to take charge of a club such as Liverpool, and Hummels, who was brought to Dortmund by Klopp in 2009, believes that the German would be an assert to the Anfield outfit.
“There’s no doubt he’s a fantastic coach and when people put their mind to the question of ‘what does he do post-Dortmund?’ then clubs like Liverpool naturally come into the equation,” Hummels said ahead of Germany’s Euro 2016 qualifier against the Republic of Ireland.
“He eats, lives, breathes and thinks football day after day and is a fantastic addition to any team. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for him in his next venture.”
German national coach Joachim Low echoed Hummels’ sentiments, stating: “I’m not really party to the negotiations but I do know talks are taking place. He’s had a fantastic, extraordinary time in Dortmund and created lots of emotions among the supporters.
“Looking from afar, there are comparisons you can make between Dortmund and Liverpool in terms of the supporter culture of both clubs. If they can work it out, he can be a great addition to any team.”
According to reports, Klopp is on the verge of agreeing a three-year-contract with the Reds that is worth in the region of £5million a year. The 48-year-old had said that he would be taking a sabbatical after leaving Dortmund at the end of last season, but Liverpool are confident of luring him back to management earlier than he had planned.

The Vietnamese squad yesterday made it four wins after they beat hosts Myanmar 1-0 in the last qualifying round’s Group G match at the Youth Training Centre, Yangon City.

The score was opened by Ha Duc Chinh in the 20th minute.

Pham Trong Hoa, who suffered a knee pain during a training session on Sunday, broke the Myanmar defenders and gave a perfect pass to Chinh who sprinted to the box and shot to goalkeeper Phone Thitsar Min’s right corner.

It was one of many chances that Chinh received through the first half. Earlier he missed a clear opportunity when he was alone in the box but his kick found the goalie’s position.

Striker Nguyen Tien Linh tore the net at the 13th mark but it was an offside trap.

Viet Nam had a golden chance to double the result just 10 minutes after the interval.

Goalie Min downed Chinh in the box and the visitors were given a penalty. However, Captain Nguyen Trong Dai’s shoot-out hit the bar.

Myanmar played much better in the second half. They created numerous problems for the Vietnamese defenders with a lot of long-distance shots, but most of them were off target.

They had more ball possession and met with no challenge to block Viet Nam’s attacks.

In their previous match against Hong Kong, Myanmar scored a double in the last minutes including additional time to come from behind to win 2-1.

However, they could not repeat it yesterday and accepted their loss, which placed them second in the ranking. They have to wait for the results from the other group to know if they can qualify for the finals.

In the previous four meets, Viet Nam were always the winners.

In another match of the group yesterday, Hong Kong beat Brunei 5-0.

In Group J, six-time runners-up Japan became the first side to punch their ticket to the finals after downing second-placed Australia 3-0 in their final match at the National Sports Complex Stadium in Vientiane, Laos.

Two goals including a penalty in the space of two minutes in first half stoppage time laid the foundations for the Japanese to record a perfect record of three wins from their trio of qualifying games.

Later, Iraq trounced Bahrain 4-1 to finish top of Group F and qualify for the finals.

Other group matches were played later yesterday and early this morning in Ha Noi time.

Ten group winners and five best second-placed teams will qualify for the finals, while hosts Bahrain receive an automatic qualification.

If Bahrain finish on top of their qualifying group or among one of the five second best-placed teams, the next second-placed team will qualify for the final competition.

In the World Cup’s Asian qualifying Group F, Vietnam were drawn with Taiwan, Thailand, and Iraq.

Each country will play each other on a home-and-away round robin basis until the top team is decided and moves automatically to the next stage of qualification.

The Iraqi team with 23 footballers and 16 officials and staff arrived in Hanoi yesterday afternoon.

Basil Hanna, head of the Iraqi delegation, said his team are coming to the city to find victory, just like any team would be in preparation for a match.

A factor that is even more important than a win though is the fun for both the players and spectators while playing sport, he added.

Coach Yahya Alwan of Iraq called up all the best players for his team to prepare for the match in Hanoi. They include Justin Meram playing in the U.S., Yaser Kasim in the UK, Ali Adnan in Italy, and Dhurgham Ismail in Turkey.

Hanna said that he and the coach had carefully watched all the recent matches of the Vietnamese national team to work out suitable ways to deal with the hosts on Thursday.

Vietnam now rank third in the group after two matches, following a 2-1 win over Taiwan and a 0-1 defeat against Thailand.

The Thais have earned seven points, while Iraq have accumulated four points, and Taiwan zero.

The other Vietnamese national team, the U-19 squad, are to take on hosts Myanmar today in the last match of Group G in the qualifiers of the AFC U-19 Championship.

After three group-stage games, Vietnam have pocketed all nine points while Myanmar have seven.

Vietnam need just a draw from the game to book a seat in the finals of the championship in Bahrain, from October 13 to 30, 2016.
