Ronaldo equals Raul’s Real record with Malmo brace

Cristiano Ronaldo joined Raul as Real Madrid’s most prolific goalscorer when he netted both goals in their 2-0 win over Malmo in Champions League Group A on Wednesday.

Already the top scorer in the competition’s history, Ronaldo rifled home his 81st and 82nd Champions League goals and took his Real tally to 323 alongside Raul with goals in the 29th and 90th minutes.

With six points from their opening two games, Rafael Benitez’s side lead Group A on goal difference from their next opponents Paris Saint-Germain, while Malmo, despite two losses, are third having conceded fewer goals than Shakhtar Donetsk.

The dismissal of Malmo’s Peru international Yoshimar Yotun in the 78th minute after picking up his second yellow card effectively ended the game as a contest.

Malmo full back Anton Tinnerholm had kept Ronaldo quiet for much of the opening half hour, but when his side lost the ball on one of their rare forays forward, there was little he or his team mates could do to stop the Portuguese winger.

Croatian playmaker Mateo Kovacic collected the loose ball and played a raking pass to Isco, who slipped it to Ronaldo. Finding himself in acres of space, he calmly picked his spot and fired past Johan Wiland.

Dani Carvajal struck the woodwork shortly before halftime with a dipping shot and Ronaldo almost added a second five minutes from time only to be thwarted by a superb reflex save from Wiland.

But Ronaldo did scored again to equal Raul’s record in the final minute after he was set up for a simple finish by substitute Lucas Vazquez.

Madrid dominated possession but Tinnerholm, Markus Rosenberg and Jo-Inge Berget all managed to test Keylor Navas, and Malmo captain Rosenberg flashed a second-half header just wide with the goal at his mercy.

Ronaldo can now shift his focus to setting a new record in Sunday’s La Liga derby against Atletico Madrid.

FIFA financial statements raise questions over Platini defence

FIFA’s financial reports, reviewed by AFP on Wednesday (Sep 30), raised questions about claims from Michel Platini that a payment he received from the organisation was delayed for nearly a decade due to financial constraints.

Platini has been questioned by Swiss prosecutors in connection with a two-million Swiss francs (US$2 million) payment he received from FIFA in 2011. The payment is central to a criminal investigation by the Swiss attorney general targeting FIFA President Sepp Blatter.

Both Blatter and Platini insist the payment was in exchange for consulting work done by the former French star between 1998 and 2002.

“Mr. Blatter informed me when I started my role as his advisor that it was not initially possible to pay the totality of my salary because of FIFA’s financial situation at that time,” Platini told AFP in an interview.

According to a financial report published in April 2003 and available on FIFA’s website, world football’s governing body had “a surplus of 115 million Swiss francs” at the close of the four-year cycle from 1999-2002.

But, in the same report, FIFA reported an expected total loss of 134 million Swiss francs in May of 2002, because of the bankruptcy scandal that hit International Sports and Leisure (ISL), a Swiss media and marketing firm in partnership with FIFA through the late 1990s.

FIFA earns significant revenue from the World Cup, and so the upturn in its financial fortunes after May of 2002 may have been linked to income from the tournament. A source who was familiar with FIFA’s finances at the time, but requested anonymity, said the organisation had enough money to pay Platini.

“Even though FIFA works on a four-year cycle, with the bulk of the revenue falling in the fourth year – in this case, the year of the 2002 World Cup – the financial situation was strong enough to handle such a payment,” the source told AFP.

“FIFA didn’t have any financial problems,” added the source. Platini told AFP that he “never doubted” he would be paid in full.

“I even put the matter to the side for a while, before finally requesting that the outstanding balance was paid in 2011.”

Asked to comment on how Platini’s explanation – which was similar to Blatter’s – meshed with its apparent financial health, a FIFA spokesperson declined to comment, citing the ongoing investigation.

Viet Nam beat Hong Kong in U19 Championship qualifier

Viet Nam beat Hong Kong 3-1 in their first Group G match, East zone, of the Asian Football Confederation U-19 Championship qualifier yesterday in Myanmar.

Striker Ha Duc Chinh scored a double while Nguyen Tien Linh scored the third goal for the Vietnamese side.

Ho Shing Yuen Matthew netted the only goal for Hong Kong.

Viet Nam showed their strength to set the pace of the game from the beginning.

Chinh opened the score just eight minutes from the start with a straight shot.

The opener shook up both the sides, but while Vietnamese striker failed to score another goal, Hong Kong found the leveller near the interval.

Vietnamese coach Hoang Anh Tuan spoke a lot to his players during the break. It seemed to have an electrifying effect on Viet Nam in the second half.

Linh pushed Viet Nam ahead just three minutes after the game resumed.

And Chinh let Hong Kong’s keeper rest for 10 minutes before he completed his double with a shot from a narrow angle.

Hong Kong had their chance for a second goal when they were given a penalty after defender Duong Van Hao committed a foul in the box.

However, goalie Nguyen Thanh Tuan did his job very well, successfully protecting the net.

Hao received a red card and will be side-lined in the next game against Brunei on Friday.

“My players were not in good spirits as it was the opening match. Furthermore, they were too eager to score, so their kicks were not accurate,” coach Tuan said at the post-match conference.

Tuan hoped that things would be better in the next few days.

Viet Nam are on top of the group which also has East Timor and the hosts.

A total of 43 member associations including final round hosts Bahrain and reigning champions Qatar will compete in the qualifiers. They are divided into two zones – the West Zone which has 25 teams and the East Zone with 18 teams.

Ten group winners and five best second-placed teams will qualify for the finals while hosts Bahrain received an automatic qualification from a total 16 teams.

If Bahrain finish on top of their qualifying group or as one of the five second best-placed teams, the next (sixth) second-placed team will qualify for the final competition.

The finals are scheduled from October 13 to 30, 2016.

Ceremony honours footballers

With the 2014-15 football season officially ending, the best players, coaches and teams were honoured last night in Ha Noi.

images583033_anh-duc
The Viet Nam Professional Football Company (VPF), who managed the V.League 1, V.League 2 and the National Cup, summed up their work at a lavish ceremony.

Becamex Binh Duong won almost all the prizes in the team category as they won both the V. League 1 and the National Cup tournaments, as well as the fair-play prizes for both these events.

Their Go Dau Stadium is recognised as having the best grass surface in the nation.

Ha Noi FC triumphed the V.League 2 and are promoted to compete in the V.League 1 next year.

Striker Nguyen Anh Duc of Becamex Binh Duong was voted the player of the season.

The best scorer was forward Tambwe Patiyo of Quang Nam who netted 18 times.

Do Duy Manh of Ha Noi T&T was honoured as the best young player, while his coach Phan Thanh Hung was voted the most successful trainer of the year.

Quang Ninh Coal were satisfied with the title for best fan club, while FLC Thanh Hoa’s Le Quoc Phuong had the most beautiful goal.

Referee Vo Minh Tri received the Golden Whistle while Nguyen Trung Hau collected his first Golden Flag as the best assistant of a referee.

The organisers selected one player from each team before choosing a star team which gathers outstanding players who work well in the 4-4-2 formation.

At the review, VPF said that despite the numerous difficulties it was a successful season with improvement in the quality of all three competitions.

Due to the numerous goals scored more spectators flocked to the stadiums, a remarkable increase compared to the previous years.

Players competed under the fair-play spirit which was in evidence through the fewer number of yellow and red cards.

There was no incident of match-fixing as the organisers worked hard with every club and co-operated with the police to ensure a transparent tournament.

However, there were still shortcomings which needed to be resolved so that the 2016 season would be an improvement on the one just concluded.

Platini “still determined” to run for FIFA presidency

UEFA chief Michel Platini is “still determined” to run for the FIFA presidency as successor to Sepp Blatter in next February’s elections, despite “doubts” about his integrity, he told AFP on Tuesday (Sep 29).

michel-platini

“I am still determined to present myself as a candidate for the FIFA Presidency so I can introduce the governance reforms that are necessary to restore the order and credibility to world football,” the Frenchman said.

But dismissing speculation that he had received “disloyal” payments from Blatter, Platini said his conscience was clear. “There is no doubt about my integrity. I have done nothing wrong. That is why I have made myself fully available to cooperate with the relevant bodies and authorities to clarify whatever may be necessary,” he added.

On a day which saw FIFA ban former vice-president Jack Warner for life and the Swiss justice ministry approved the extradition of former Costa Rican federation boss Eduardo Li to the United States, where he faces a range of charges linked to corruption, Platini spoke to AFP about recent events which saw him implicated in a Swiss investigation.

He defended receiving a two million Swiss franc (US$2 million) payment from the world body in 2011 for work completed nearly a decade earlier. “I was employed by FIFA as a special advisor to President Sepp Blatter, working on various matters related to football, such as the international football calendar. It was a full-time job,” Platini said.

“Like I explained to the Swiss authorities, I received only part of the agreed salary between 1998 to 2002. This occurred because, at the time, FIFA informed me that they would not be able to pay me the total agreed amount. Of course all the moneys received at the time were declared to the pertinent authorities.”

Lewandowski nets hat-trick as Bayern crush Dinamo

Robert Lewandowski’s phenomenal goal-scoring run continued on Tuesday with a hat-trick in Bayern Munich’s 5-0 mauling as Dinamo Zagreb’s 45-match unbeaten run was halted in emphatic fashion.

Lewandowski again ran riot in the Champions League home match as Mario Goetze and Douglas Costa also netted to put Bayern top of Group F following their 3-0 win at Olympiakos a fortnight ago before facing Arsenal away in three weeks.

“We played in a very concentrated fashion from the start and when you take your goal chances, the game was over after 30 minutes,” said Bayern captain Philipp Lahm.

The Poland hot-shot has now scored 10 goals in his last three games after netting five in just nine spectacular minutes of Bayern’s 5-1 hammering of Wolfsburg last Tuesday before claiming two more in Saturday’s 3-0 win at Mainz.

“I am happy to get three more goals, but the main thing is that we won 5-0,” said Lewandowski. “It doesn’t matter how many goals I score as long as we keep picking up points. The whole team played well, which creates opportunities for me.”

But with 10 goals in eight days, Lewandowski is in incredible form. “He’s had an unbelievable week behind him,” admitted Lahm, who joked that he expects at least three goals from Lewandowski per game from now on.

The thrashing of Zagreb left Bayern three points clear of second-placed Olympiakos in the table following their shock 3-2 win over Arsenal in London.

This was Zagreb’s heaviest away defeat in Europe as the five-goal difference superseded their 6-2 loss at Real Madrid in the group stages four years ago. Lewandowski now has 17 goals for club and country as Bayern enjoyed an easy win.

Zagreb’s performance made a mockery of their 10-month unbeaten run in all competitions as they only created their first clear shot on goal with an hour gone after Bayern had raced into a 4-0 lead at the break.

Costa opened the floodgate on 13 minutes by skipping past a defender to beat Zagreb goalkeeper Eduardo at the near post.

The second followed on 21 minutes when Dinamo’s 18-year-old centre-back Filip Benkovic slipped after heading the ball down, Thiago Alcantara pounced on the error and his pass found Lewandowski in acres of space.

Eduardo’s night went from bad to worse when he failed to deal with Goetze’s weak shot after an exchange of passes with Kingsley Coman and the ball bobbled over the line to the 33-year-old’s dismay on 25 minutes.

Lewandowski claimed his second on 28 minutes when he met Costa’s cross and his shot cannoned off the underside of the bar to bounce over the line with the Dinamo defence cut to ribbons.

Lewandowski saved his best goal of the night to claim his hat-trick. Costa showed off his dazzling skills with a deft flick to Thiago, who put Lewandowski in behind the defence and the Poland striker scooped the ball over the hapless Eduardo on 55 minutes.

Only a good save from the Portugal national goalkeeper prevented Lewandowski getting his fourth when he dived at the striker’s feet on 75 minutes.

Shortly after the Croatian double champions had their first corner as they found themselves completely outgunned as Bayern fired in 27 shots on goal to just seven in reply as Lewandowski fired wide with two clear chances.

Chung calls for emergency FIFA congress

The South Korean tycoon and former FIFA vice president announced that an emergency task force had to be set up to take over FIFA’s leadership.

chung-moon-joon

FIFA presidential candidate Chung Mong-joon called on Tuesday (Sep 29) for a task force to run football’s world body after veteran leader Sepp Blatter was placed under criminal investigation.

The South Korean former FIFA vice president said an emergency congress should be held to set up the force to oversee the scandal-tainted body.

Swiss prosecutors last week placed Blatter under investigation, only days after FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke was suspended over allegations of involvement in tickets sold at inflated prices.

Chung said the FIFA organisation that should be preparing for the 2018 World Cup in Russia is in “total meltdown”.

“FIFA and regional confederations should consider convening extraordinary sessions of their respective executive committees as well as a Congress to set up an emergency task force that will enable the FIFA secretariat to function without interruption,” Chung said.

His spokesman Lin Byung-Taik told AFP that Chung wanted an “emergency congress” even before one to be held in February to elect a new president.

Blatter is being investigated for alleged criminal mismanagement, including a US$2 million payment made to UEFA president Michel Platini.

The 79-year-old Blatter has since refused to stand down. Platini, another candidate for the FIFA leadership, has also denied any wrongdoing.

Platini said on Monday the money was declared to Swiss authorities. But no one has yet explained why a payment for work carried out between 1998 and 2002 was only made in 2011.

Blatter has said he will leave office when an election is held in February. Platini had been the favourite to take over but the new revelations could dramatically alter the election race.

Chung is another leading candidate along with Prince Ali bin al Hussein, a former FIFA vice president from Jordan who said the world body has been “decimated” by the new scandal.

Chung said the charges against Blatter represented “another sad day” for FIFA. The world football body was plunged into crisis in May when the US justice department indicted 14 officials over bribery – including seven who were detained in a Zurich hotel before a FIFA meeting.

“The most urgent task at hand is to root out corruption from within FIFA,” said Chung.

“Investigations into illegal activities of the past should be left to the proper legal authorities. Justice must be served. Resuscitating FIFA, however, should be left to those who love football. The future of football should not be left in the hands of outsiders,” he added.

Chung has said that if elected he will stand for only one term to carry out reforms.

Lukaku inspires Everton late show

Romelu Lukaku’s double strike inspired a remarkable fightback as Everton recovered from two goals down to win 3-2 at West Bromwich Albion on Monday (Sep 28).

Roberto Martinez’s side looked destined for a defeat when Craig Dawson added to Saido Berahino’s first half opener to put Albion 2-0 up with 54 minutes gone at the Hawthorns.

But Belgium forward Lukaku gave Everton a crucial lifeline when he netted one minute late and Ivory Coast striker Aruna Kone equalised in the closing stages before Lukaku bagged the winner with only six minutes left.

Lukaku’s first Premier League goals for six weeks came against the club he played for on loan in the 2012-13 campaign and lifted Everton to fifth in the table following their third league win of the season.

“We were very disappointed with the first half. We were off, every single individual,” Martinez said. “The mountain we had to climb, it would have been easy to lose focus but we got three goals against the best defensive structure in the Premier League. Every three points is huge but it feels extra good.”

It was the perfect preparation for Everton’s Merseyside derby date with Liverpool on Sunday, while Albion’s third league defeat of the season left Tony Pulis’ team languishing in 15th place.

“The first goal kills us. We should deal with it,” Pulis said. “The other two goals are poor goals, the second one looks offside. We switched off and Everton will punish you.”

There was little hint of the eventual drama, which left Albion winless at home in the league this season, during a wretched first half which was only lit up by Berahino’s opener.

Without injured England defender John Stones, Ramiro Funes Mori stepped in for his full league debut but the Everton centre-back was at fault for Albion’s first goal.

Mori had enjoyed a untroubled half but imploded when he lost the ball near the halfway line after trying to run out of defence. It found James Morrison and his excellent through-ball for Berahino saw the striker slip in a low shot via Tim Howard’s legs.

Darren Fletcher had a header turned wide by Howard as Albion pressed after the interval and they doubled their lead from the resulting corner.

Phil Jagielka and Ross Barkley got in a mess trying to pick up Dawson and Jonny Evans, which allowed Dawson to nod in Chris Brunt’s deep delivery.

Everton hit back immediately when Lukaku headed Deulofeu’s cross past Boaz Myhill and Kone levelled in the 75th minute, just three minutes after coming off the bench.

Lukaku did brilliantly on the edge of the box to spot Kone’s run and threaded the ball through to the former Wigan forward, who was just onside, to drill past Myhill.

The Baggies were shell-shocked, but former Chelsea striker Lukaku was not finished as he wrapped up Everton’s comeback with six minutes left.

There was a hint of handball when he met Gerard Deulofeu’s cross, but with Myhill slow to react Lukaku smashed in from close range to spark wild celebrations among the travelling Everton fans.

Blatter insists he will stay as FIFA president

FIFA’s embattled president Sepp Blatter insisted on Monday (Sep 28) that he will not stand down despite being the target of a Swiss criminal investigation for mismanagement.

Michel Platini, the powerful head of the European UEFA confederation who has been implicated in the investigation, also defended a two million Swiss franc (US$2 million) payment from the world body. Blatter, 79, denied any “wrongdoing” in a meeting at FIFA headquarters.

“President Blatter spoke to FIFA staff today and informed the staff that he was cooperating with the authorities, reiterated that he had done nothing illegal or improper and stated that he would remain as president of FIFA,” said the statement by his US-based lawyer Richard Cullen.

Swiss prosecutors say Blatter is the target of a probe into “criminal mismanagement” at FIFA, focusing on a 2005 television rights sale to the Caribbean Football Union and the Platini payment. French football legend Platini has been questioned by Swiss investigators, but has not been named as a suspect.

The inquiry sent fresh shocks through world football, which has descended deeper into crisis since May, when the US justice department indicted 14 people over bribery in football deals worth more than US$150 million dating back to 1991.

Four days after winning a fifth term as president on May 30, Blatter dramatically announced that he would stand down when a new election is held in February. But media reports said FIFA’s independent ethics committee was about to launch an inquiry which could force the suspension of Blatter and Platini.

The Swiss attorney general, in announcing the new probe, said the two-million Swiss franc (US$2.05 million) payment made in 2011 to Platini may have been illegal. Platini defended the transaction on Monday, as the Frenchman hopes to separate himself from the stench surrounding FIFA while keeping his presidency bid on track.

Legitimate payment?

Both Blatter and Platini have said the former French star did work for FIFA from 1998 to 2002. Swiss investigators have noted that compensation for the work was not made until a decade later and suggested the payment may have been “disloyal” to FIFA, meaning it amounted to an illegal use of the body’s funds.

In a meeting with Swiss investigators on Friday, Blatter said the payments to Platini were “valid compensation and nothing more and were properly accounted for within FIFA”, according to Cullen, a defence lawyer based in the US state of Virginia.

In a statement, Platini insisted the payment had been “fully declared by me to the authorities, in accordance with Swiss law”.

Platini had been favourite to succeed Blatter at the special election called for February. But FIFA insiders and former officials have suggested that being mentioned in Swiss case could a major blow to his candidacy.

“I am aware that these events may harm my image and my reputation,” Platini said, voicing eagerness to clear up any “misunderstandings.”

Ethics committee’s probe?

The Swiss investigation could take months to develop, but some have said that Blatter’s more immediate problem is FIFA’s own ethics committee, which could force him out at any time.

A spokesman for the committee told AFP at the weekend that the panel initiates a probe “if there is an initial suspicion”, a bar which almost certainly has been cleared with respect to Blatter.

An ethics committee investigation would not automatically lead to Blatter’s removal, but some believe it would. “I expect Blatter to be suspended. There’s no choice,” said Guido Tognoni, a former FIFA staffer andBlatter advisor. “FIFA is in such trouble.”

Aside from an open criminal file against its president, nine FIFA officials have been charged in the United States.

Blatter’s former right-hand man, secretary general Jerome Valcke was suspended last week over allegations that he was aware of a black market ticket scheme surrounding the 2014 World Cup.

Meanwhile, with trust in FIFA falling to new lows, there have been calls for an outsider with a clean record to be named interim president. If Blatter is suspended, FIFA’s senior vice president Issa Hayatou of Cameroon, head of the Confederation of African Football, would take over. But Hayatou has been linked to past graft allegations.
