Messi’s double takes Barcelona back top of La Liga

Lionel Messi scored twice and missed a penalty as Barcelona stretched their 100 per cent record in La Liga to four games with a 4-1 win over Levante on Sunday (Sep 20).

barcelona

The European champions lead Real Madrid, Villarreal and Celta Vigo by two points with Atletico Madrid a point further adrift in fifth.

Levante frustrated an experimental Barca side shorn of Luis Suarez from the start for 50 minutes before Marc Bartra settled the Catalans’ nerves from Messi’s cross. The floodgates then opened as Neymar doubled the advantage before Messi converted his first effort from the spot.

Victor Casadesus pulled a goal back for Levante 24 minutes from time as he pounced on an error from Barca ‘keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Messi then missed a penalty for the second time this season, but made amends with a stunning individual effort to round off the scoring.

“He isn’t human because he scored two goals and provided an assist,” Barca boss Luis Enrique joked when asked if Messi’s struggles from the spot proved he is fallible. “There is very little that makes him seem human.”

Suarez missed out on Enrique’s starting line-up for the first time this season as he handed youngsters Sandro and Munir El Haddadi a rare start.

Yet, both failed to impress as Levante comfortably kept Barca at bay during the first period and could even have taken a shock lead had Nabil Ghilas kept his composure instead of blazing wildly off target midway through the half.

In the absence of Suarez and Andres Iniesta, Messi was playing in a deeper midfield role and it was his creativity that eventually undid Levante as Bartra controlled the Argentine’s inch-perfect cross before slotting past Ruben Martinez.

Neymar added a second on 56 minutes when he squeezed the ball between the legs of two Levante defenders on the line for his second goal of the season. Messi then confidently dispatched his first effort from the penalty spot after Neymar had been tripped by Angel Trujillo.

Ter Stegen has been handed his place in the side by an injury to Claudio Bravo, but the German’s recent struggles continued as he flapped at a Levante corner to gift Casadesus a goal back.

Normal service appeared to be resumed when Messi was upended by Zou Feddal, but this time he blazed the ball high over the bar to take his tally of missed spot-kicks in his Barca career to 15 of the 65 he has taken.

Yet, from open play Messi remains the most dangerous player in the world and he shrugged off that miss by dribbling past two Levante defenders before smashing in Barca’s fourth of the night a minute from time.

Earlier, Europa League holders Sevilla’s terrible start to their La Liga season continued as Celta Vigo climbed into fourth with a 2-1 win at the Sanchez Pizjuan.

Villarreal moved into third with a convincing 3-1 win over a depleted Athletic Bilbao. And Sporting Gijon claimed their first victory since returning to the top flight with a 3-2 win in a thrilling encounter away at Deportivo la Coruna.

Spanish La Liga results:

Sevilla 1 Celta Vigo 2

Deportivo la Coruna 2 Sporting Gijon 3

Villarreal 3 Athletic Bilbao 1

Las Palmas 0 Rayo Vallecano 1

Barcelona 4 Levante 1

Australia defeat VN to advance to finals of U16

Uong Ngoc Tien of Viet Nam missed a penalty, wasting a chance for his team to automatically advance to the final round of the Asian Football Confederation U16 Championship next year.

This followed, as Viet Nam lost 0-1 to Australia in the last Group J match of the qualification in Ha Noi yesterday, Sept 20.
Further, Tien failed to convert his shot into a goal after a powerful kick struck goalkeeper’s Jacob Botic cross bar at the 61st minute.
Earlier, defender Mersim Memeti opened the scoring at the 30th mark of the first half, after the visitors set up their domination, displaying better form and stronger physiques.
The Joeys then successfully defended their goal, despite threatening attempts of the hosts in the final 20 minutes.
Australia’s impressive campaign brought them the only ticket for the group winner to the finals.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, coach Dinh The Nam of Viet Nam spoke of his regret about the loss.
“Viet Nam was as strong as Australia in this match. We created many chances, but could not convert them to goals. It is football, so when we cannot score, we lose,” said Nam.
The coach, however, said he was satisfied with how his players performed.
“My players strictly followed my tactics, but they still had a disadvantage due to their nervousness and physiques, which must be improved if we are to enter the finals. They need more training and competition in the future,” he said.
Meanwhile, coach Antony Vidmar of the Australian side said his team played well.
The players controlled more of the ball throughout the entire match, but they also suffered problems from being mentally fatigued, he added.
Meanwhile, Myanmar finished their qualifiers in style, as Eric Williams’ charges thrashed rock bottom Guam 10-0 to finish third.
Despite previous defeats to Australia and Viet Nam, ensuring they could not qualify for next year’s continental gathering in India, Myanmar ran out comfortable winners courtesy of a four-goal haul from striker Kyaw Kyaw Htet, as well as Htun Sai’s hat trick and further strikes from Bo Bo Aung, Thet Paing Htoo and substitute Hein Htet Aung.
The result saw Myanmar finish third in the group, ahead of Guam, who failed to garner a point.
Eleven group winners and four best second-place teams will come together in India for next year’s finals, with the tournament hosts receiving an automatic qualification.
Should India finish on top of their qualifying group, or among the four best second-placed teams, the fifth best second-placed nation will qualify for the final competition.
Viet Nam still has to wait until all matches of the qualifier have been completed to learn if they are among the best four second-place squads.

Futsal ladies to take on Japanese

Viet Nam plans to offer a surprise during their first match against Japan at the Asian Football Confederation Women’s Futsal Championship, which begins today (Sept 21) in Malaysia.
The two teams are competing in Group B, along with Thailand and China.
Group A consists of Iran, Uzbekistan, Hong Kong and the hosts.
Commenting on the upcoming match, Tuan said, “This group will be more difficult than Group A, as Japan and Thailand are very powerful teams.
“Our first rivals, Japan, play at a higher level than we do, but my team worked very hard in the past seven weeks, and will give not only Japan, but also the whole group, a shock,” he said.
Viet Nam defeated hosts Malaysia twice during their friendly matches while warming-up for the tournament.
They won the first match 9-2, before winning 4-2 in the second.
Tuan said his players were asked to keep their eyes on every Japanese player and offer no room for their players to play well.
At the press briefing, coach Arihara Masaaki of Japan was careful when talking about the game.
He thought all matches would be difficult and important to his team, noting that his players must play at their best it they want to defeat Viet Nam.
Japan is one of the strongest teams in Asia, as the champions of the 2007 and 2009 Asian Indoor Games, and have set a target of entering the final match.
Another team to watch in the group is Thailand, the three time Southeast Asian Games champions and bronze medalist at the last Asian Indoor Games in South Korea.
Thai assistant coach Patt Sriwisit said Group B competition brings together strong teams, including Viet Nam, Japan and China. But Thailand might make a ‘bang’ at Nilai Stadium.
The team’s first task, though, is to defeat China in the opening match of the group.

U16s in historic 18-nil AFC win

Viet Nam tore into the Guam defence to score an impressive 18-0 win in the ongoing Asian Football Confederation U16 Championship in Ha Noi.
The hosts needed not even a minute to start their scoring spree with Nguyen Duy Khiem hitting the Guam net with a straight shot.
The striker also scored twice in the second half to make it the second hat-trick of the match. The first one went to his teammate Mach Ngoc Hai. Meanwhile Bui Anh Duc was the best scorer with a poker (four goals), all in the first half.
Coach Dinh The Nam decided to give a chance to his substitutes after the interval and Tran Van Dat, Tran Minh Hieu and Vu Dinh Hai added to the tally with a double each.
It made Dat the leading scorer of the group with five goals from two matches.
The other goal scorers were Nguyen Khac Khiem, Nguyen Huu Thang, Uong Ngoc Tien and Nguyen Trong Long.
The team also rewrote Vietnamese football history by scoring the most goals in an international match.
The second win pushes Viet Nam to the top of the Group J with six points, as many as Australia, who also won yesterday after beating Myanmar 3-1 in an earlier game. The Joeys are second due to a lower goal difference.
Coach Nam said the top position is an advantage for Viet Nam ahead of the last match against Australia. However, it would not be easy for his players as the Australians had a better physique and body form.
Nam said it would be 50-50 chance for both sides.
In the last round match on Sunday, the host side only needs one point to book a ticket to the final round in India next year.

It was a must-win for the former Southeast Asian Games champions who unexpectedly lost 0-1 to underdog Chinese Taipei some days ago at the Mansalarthiri Stadium, Mandalay City.
Coach Norimatsu Takashi had on the field his best players who created successive attacks from the start of the game.
Their efforts brought sweet results with three goals scored in the first half brushing aside the strong home support for Myanmar by thousands of its fans.
Huynh Nhu opened the score at the 17th minute with a shot to the far right corner.
The first goal gave a strong push to the team with the second goal coming just five minutes later.
Nguyen Thi Minh Nguyet scored an easy goal when she passed the Myanmar defenders to tap the ball into the net.
Nguyet completed her double by booting the ball in from the penalty spot just before the break.
The visiting side maintained their domination and netted another goal in the early minutes of the second half by Huynh Nhu who dazzled with a solo run from the centre of the field to beat goalkeeper Mya Phu Ngon.
Myanmar, who failed to convert their chances in the first half, turned things around in the second.
In the last 10 minutes, it retaliated strongly and earned two goals but it was not enough to earn them a draw.
With three points, Viet Nam are third behind Chinese Taipei and Thailand, respectively, in the rankings.
Thailand secured their second victory yesterday defeating Jordan 1-0.
In the fixture tomorrow, Viet Nam will play arch rival Thailand, who beat them 2-1 in the final of the 2013 SEA Games, at the same stadium.

Vietnam suffer loss in Olympic qualifier

Vietnam suffered a shock defeat in their second match of the Olympics’ women’s football qualification round, Asian zone, September 14.

20150916100626-1

The former Southeast Asian Games champion unexpectedly lost 0-1 to Chinese Taipei at the Mansalarthiri Stadium, Mandalay City, Myanmar.
Coach Norimatsu Takashi used his best squad against a rival who was considered the weakest in the Group A and his team created the first chance.
In the 17th minute, Veteran striker Nguyen Thi Minh Nguyet reached close to goalkeeper Tsai Ming-Jung of the other side but her shot went a little wide.
Vietnamese players easily set up their domination and found a number of opportunities which, however, could not be converted. Nguyet Nguyen Hai Hoa and Tran Thi Thuy Trang all failed to enter Tsai’s net.
Taipei’s defenders successfully resisted Vietnam’s consecutive attacks until the interval.
Takashi retained the same squad in the second half using the 4-5-1 formation against Taipei who spent time training hard in Hanoi last month.
Their improved skills, better height and physique, were brought into play in this half of the match.
Goalie Dang Thi Kieu Trinh of Vietnam had to work hard with strong support from her defenders to save her net.
However that could only last until the 85th minute.
In a rapid counter-attack, substitute defender Lin Chiung Ying received a ball from the right wing and her straight shot to Trinh’s far corner made the opening goal.
With five minutes remaining, Vietnam made desperate attempts to score, but could not do much to change the score line.
The loss has made things difficult for Vietnam en route to the final qualification round.
In a press-briefing prior to the match, Takashi, who travelled with his players to his home country in Japan for an intensive training course, set a target of staying on top of the group to take the only ticket to advance.
In their preparation for the tournament, Vietnam played Taipei twice in July. They won one and drew one.
On September 18, Vietnam will play host Myanmar who beat Jordan 2-0 in another match yesterday.
It is said to be a hard game for both sides who have played each other on numerous occasions in regional and SEA Games events.
In their latest meet, Vietnam won 3-2 in the ASEAN Football Federation Women’s Championship on their home turf of Thong Nhat Stadium in HCM City on May 2.
The second qualifying round of the 2016 Olympic Games-Asian Zone’s Group A sees five participants. Teams will compete in a round-robin event from September 14-22.
The best team will join the Republic of Korea, China, and North Korea, in addition to Australia and hosts Japan in the last qualifier, which is scheduled from February 29 to March 9.
Two outstanding squads from this round will book their berths to the Rio de Janeiro Games next summer.

U16 Vietnam hoping to reach AFC championship final

Not just coach Dinh The Nam of Viet Nam, but managers of three other teams are also hoping to win a ticket to the Asian Football Confederation U16 Championship’s final.

Coach Dinh The Nam of Viet Nam (centre) talks with his players during a training day in Ha Noi. Viet Nam will play Myanmar in the opening match of the Asian Football Confederation U16 Championship qualification's Group J today.

Coach Dinh The Nam of Viet Nam (centre) talks with his players during a training day in Ha Noi. Viet Nam will play Myanmar in the opening match of the Asian Football Confederation U16 Championship qualification’s Group J today.

Viet Nam are in Group J along with Australia, Guam and Myanmar in the qualification round.
“We have one month training ahead of this qualifying round. Players are selected from the best national football training hubs who have experience playing with several local rivals at a higher level,” Nam said at a pre-tournament press conference in Ha Noi yesterday.
“After the ASEAN tournament, the coaching board has made efforts to remove our weaknesses. My team is on the right track now and we are ready,” Nam said.
The coach added that the Asian U-16 qualifier is a more difficult competition in comparison to the regional one, although it is also for young players.
“One of the key elements is the strong spirit of the participants who have not played too many games in their career. So, my team will have to try and win every match, especially the ones against Myanmar and the strongest one Australia,” Nam said.
“All the teams want to advance to the final and Viet Nam is no exception.”
Vietnamese captain Nguyen Trong Long also took part in the press conference yesterday.
He said the Vietnamese players fell a little pressure but hoped that the support of home fans will be a strong motivator for them to achieve the best result.
Coach Eric Williams of Myanmar appreciated the hosts who they will meet in the opening match today at the National Youth Football Training Centre.
“Tomorrow will be tough for us, as I have watched the Vietnamese players competing during the ASEAN tournament. We will have to give off our best if we want a win,” he said.
Myanmar have not been able to prepare carefully for the event as their training abroad was cancelled. The team practiced locally and had several matches against some young squads of domestic clubs.
Also speaking at the press conference yesterday, Peter De Roo of Australia confirmed that there were several players in his team with skilled techniques, but their strong point was team unity.
Roo said Viet Nam were a well-organised team and would be difficult rivals for anyone.
The Australians arrived in Viet Nam six days before the competition to familiarise themselves with the weather and the field. And he expected his players to show their best form when the games kicked off.
Meanwhile, Guam are the best-prepared squad with a training course in South Korean coach Kim Sang Won’s home country where they played four local teams.
Kim said he was really satisfied with what they had done, especially in the area of physique.
“Guam played pretty well recently thanks to some players who are taking part in competitions in the United States. In the near future we will be even better, as we have our own national football academy and a programme to promote youth football,” Kim said.
Forty-five teams, which will play in the qualifying stage, have been divided into 11 groups.
In each group, the teams will play each other once at a central venue. The 11 group winners and the four best runners-up from all groups will qualify for the final tournament, which will be hosted by India. As hosts, India have qualified automatically, but will also compete in the qualifiers.
If India are among the group winners or the best runner-up, the fifth-best runner-up will also qualify for the final.
