Famed French football club to train HCM City footballers

France’s Olympique Lyonais club, runner-up at the French Championships 2014-2015, is eyeing to train and produce a team of skilled Vietnamese footballers for Ho Chi Minh City over the next 10 years.

The plan was mentioned during the club’s working session with Ho Chi Minh City authorities on September 10, following a three-day field trip around the city.
The club’s experts suggested designing a comprehensive scheme covering the training of coaches and construction of a football academy.
It will assign technique experts to Vietnam to recruit and train young footballers as well as outline development orientations for the academy.
Deputy Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Hua Ngoc Thuan asked the municipal Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Ho Chi Minh City Football Federation to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation with the club for the foreseeable future, covering men and women’s football and futsal.
A strong football club in Europe, Olympique Lyonais won championship titles in France for seven consecutive years, from 2002-2008.

Binh Duong win fourth V.League title

Becamex Binh Duong became champions of the 2015 Toyota V.League 1 with two matches in hand after a goalless draw with Hai Phong in the 24th round at Lach Tray Stadium.

Một trận thua muối mặt của nhà vô địch tren san nhà

The champions earned 49 points after 24 matches, six points more than their closest rival, FLC Thanh Hoa, who lost 3-4 to Quang Nam.
Binh Duong become the first Vietnamese team to win the national premier league for the fourth time. Their previous titles were in 2007, 2008 and 2014.
The team will receive a huge bonus of VND10 billion (US$454,000) from V-League organisers and sponsors, a reward that will be handed over to the winner at a celebration.
Binh Duong are expected to win a double title this year as they play the National Cup final match against Ha Noi T&T on September 26. If they indeed win, they will receive another bonus of VND3 billion ($136,400).
At Pleiku Stadium, Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) came from behind to beat Ha Noi T&T 3-2.
This win helped HAGL nurse better hopes of staying in the national premier league after many losses that had made the team stare at the risk of being relegated to the lesser football event.
HAGL have 23 points to be ranked 11th out of 14 teams, leaving behind the bottom-placed team Dong Nai with 18 points. Ha Noi T&T rank third with 40 points.
The visitors T&T dominated the match since the first minutes to seek three points.
Having received a pass from Pham Thanh Luong, Hoang Vu Samson opened the score for T&T in the 19th minute. Nine minutes later, Nguyen Ngoc Duy coolly put his header past the goalkeeper of HAGL to double the score for the visitors.
After two quick losses, HAGL played more aggressively to narrow the gap but failed.
After the break, newly appointed coach Nguyen Quoc Tuan, who had chosen to replace French coach Guillaume Graechen, made the team change its tactics, something that succeeded.
In the 50th minute, HAGL’s Nguyen Cong Phuong passed the ball to his teammate Bui Van Long. A long shot to the penalty area and the ball beat T&T’s Gonzalo Damian Marronkle’s leg and slowly rolled into the visitors’ goal.
The mountainous team HAGL scored two more goals in the 64th and 77th minutes, thanks to Nguyen Van Toan and Le Hoang Thien.
In other news, Da Nang defeated Dong Thap 4-2 and Can Tho bested Song Lam Nghe An 3-0.
Elsewhere, Dong Tam Long An tied with Dong Nai 4-4, while Khanh Hoa lost to Quang Ninh Coal 0-5.

Tran Quoc Tuan, deputy chairman of Vietnam Football Federation, said that Vietnam needs good preparation for the league.
“I would not say any group is stronger than others. All teams who enter the finals are equally strong and mobilize the country’s best players in the age,” he said.
This is Vietnam’s debut at the continent’s U23 finals after ranked 2nd in Group I in qualifiers, after Japan. Malaysia and Macau were the two eliminated teams in the group.
Vietnam is listed in 4th seeded group with China, Thailand and Yemen.
Tuan said that Group D promises tough matches with surprising results.
“VFF will create best favors for Coach Toshiya Miura and his players to compete at the event,” he said.
AFC will select three best teams from four groups to compete at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.
Tuan was regretful that he could not accompany Miura to the drawing ceremony in Qatar.
“If I had been there, I would have negotiated with relevant partners to organize friendly matches ahead of the finals, of course not the teams in Group D,” he said.
However, he said U23 Vietnam will have at least 4 international friendlies this year.

The two teams will join the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Jordan in a group-stage round robin tournament, with the top two performers to automatically advance to the knockout stage.
Thailand and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea will both face the same challenge in Group B, which is considered the group of death due to the presence of powerhouses Japan and 2013 runners-up Saudi Arabia.
Group A includes hosts Qatar, Syria, Iran and China, while reigning champions Iraq, the Republic of Korea, Uzbekistan and Yemen make up Group C.
Vietnam and Thailand are the only two representatives of the Southeast Asian region and are two of three teams, including Qatar, to debut in the tournament – the second edition of its kind following the first in 2013.
Vietnam qualified for the finals as the third best runner-up of the qualification round held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia a few months ago, coming in second place in Group I with six points.
As planned, Vietnam’s U-23 team will reconvene this December in preparation for the 2016 AFC U-23 finals, scheduled to take place in Qatar from January 12-30. The top three teams of the final stage will represent Asia to compete in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Thailand, Myanmar, Jordan and Chinese Taipei join Việt Nam in this qualifying round, with the winner moving on the next stage.
“This will be an interesting event with many challenges. I have information on Thailand, Myanmar and Chinese Taipei, not Jordan. We played two friendly matches against Taipei in Ha Noi in July. I think that Thailand and Myanmar will be Viet Nam’s toughest rivals,” said Viet Nam’s Japanese head coach Norimatsu Takashi.
Viet Nam held a two-week training camp in Japan in preparation for the tournament.
According to Takashi, the Vietnamese team’s physical strength has been improved.
“Vietnamese players have good technique. If they don’t have good strength, they can’t beat rivals who are taller and stronger than them. During training, I and the training board focused on strengthening their health. My players have made fast progress,” Takashi added.
Takashi was worried that Myanmar’s weather will impact on Viet Nam’s performance but he now feels the team are ready.
Viet Nam will play Chinese Taipei on September 14, Myanmar on September 18, Jordan on September 20 and Thailand on September 22.
“The first match with Chinese Taipei is very important. We need a win,” said Takashi.
All matches will be played at the Youth Training Centre Stadium in Yangon.
Jordan, Chinese Taipei and Myanmar qualified after topping their groups in the first round, while the teams ranked sixth and seventh in Asia, Thailand and Viet Nam respectively, automatically qualified for round 2.
Teams ranked in the top five – Japan (1st), Australia (2nd), North Korea (3rd), China (4th) and South Korea (5th) – automatically enter the final qualification round where they will be joined by the winner from round 2.
The top two finishers from the final qualification round will represent Asian at the Summer Olympics women’s football tournament.

Miura wants win over Thailand

Viet Nam’s coach Toshyia Miura wants his team to beat Thailand by at least one goal when the two meet in the 2018 World Cup qualification round tonight in Ha Noi.

HLV Miura muốn thắng Thái Lan để gây tiếng vang

It means that the Japanese has set a target of winning three points on home turf at the My Dinh Stadium although he had high praise for the arch-rivals.

Speaking at a press conference held yesterday in the capital city, Miura said he had prepared for the second-leg game between the two squads.

“There will be several changes in my team, but in any case my players will have to play their best for a good match,” Miura, who received appreciation after his team’s 1-1 draw against Iraq last week, said.

The coach said a win over Thailand was always a target that he has been chasing since he began to work in Viet Nam.

“Thailand have won most of its matches against Viet Nam. I not only want to beat them but also want to bring Viet Nam to continental level,” he said.

“It is difficult to beat them with four or five goals but a solitary goal win is possible,” he believed.

“Thailand is always a big rival that every Vietnamese wants to defeat and we, the players, want even more than them,” striker Le Cong Vinh, who also presented at the conference yesterday, said.

Vinh should be the one who knows Thailand the best as he was one of Viet Nam team members who beat Thailand in the AFF Championship final in 2008.

“It is difficult to compare them in different times. But they are always players with skilful techniques who understand each other,” Vinh said.

“Thailand’s football is the best among ASEAN countries. So we need to know who we are and have a suitable plan to have a good result against them,” the captain said.

On the other side, coach assistant Kairung Threejagsang said he hoped Viet Nam, who dropped a win over Iraq in the last seconds would be attacking like his team tomorrow, so that it would be a great match for spectators.

And Kairung also hoped to take three points home as they did in the first-leg match months ago.

Coach Kiatisak Senamuang said it would be no easy match for the hosts.

He said fan support would make Viet Nam stronger especially when they play on home soil. Vietnamese fans were great and really wanted a win for their team but his players would make a strong impression on them.

He said the Thais had their own ways and knew how to manage the game.

The former national striker, who played and coached in Viet Nam for several years, said My Dinh would be a place for the Thais to perform their skills before taking a win home.

In this match, Miura will be backed by thousands of local fans, while his players are in good spirits after a draw versus Iraq.

However, Thai fans also want to make My Dinh their home ground with more than 2,000 tickets having been booked by the Thai football association.

The visiting team, which has had more rest days than the hosts is promised a bonus of 1 million baht (US$26,700) for each goal that they score in this match.

Under Miura’s reign, Viet Nam have met Thailand thrice and lost all.

Tearful Rooney nets record 50th England goal

An emotional Wayne Rooney became England’s all-time leading goal-scorer after netting his 50th international goal in a historic 2-0 victory over Switzerland at Wembley in a Euro 2016 qualifier on Tuesday (Sep 8).

With England having already qualified for next year’s tournament, the stage was set for their captain to surpass Bobby Charlton’s 45-year-old mark of 49, which he had equalled in Saturday’s 6-0 win in San Marino.

After substitute Harry Kane broke the deadlock, the moment duly arrived in the 84th minute, Rooney crashing a penalty into Yann Sommer’s top-right corner and being rewarded with a standing ovation that left him wiping away tears.

“It’s a great feeling,” said Rooney, 29. “I’ve been close for the last few games and it’s a dream come true. I was bit emotional. It’s a huge honour and one I am extremely proud of. “I knew it was a big moment and just picked my corner and put my foot through it. To be the record scorer before the age of 30 is nothing I could have imagined.”

Charlton, whose Manchester United record of 249 goals is also being eroded by Rooney, was quick to offer congratulations. “I would like to congratulate Wayne on becoming England’s leading goal-scorer,” the 77-year-old, emblem of England’s 1966 World Cup win, said in a statement.

“I obviously cannot deny that I am disappointed that I now don’t hold this record, however, I am absolutely delighted that it is Wayne, as captain of my beloved club and country, who now holds this record.”

England manager Roy Hodgson said: “I’m delighted for Wayne Rooney and his breaking of the record, and showing such courage and ability to blast it into the roof of the net. “His maturity has impressed me, the way he’s accepted the captaincy. He’s still out there working as hard as the 19-year-old making his way in the game.”

Hodgson revealed that Rooney had been presented with a commemorative shirt by the Football Association and had made a short speech to his team-mates after the game. He is to be presented with a golden boot by Charlton prior to England’s next game against Estonia at Wembley on Oct 9.

There were also messages of congratulations from United and Gary Lineker, who had stood second behind Charlton on 48 goals prior to Rooney’s goal against San Marino, which also came from the spot.

Kane breaks deadlock

The result gave Hodgson’s side an eighth consecutive win, keeping them on course to finish Group E with a perfect record ahead of October’s final two qualifiers against Estonia and Lithuania.

But while England, who lost Fabian Delph to an early injury, can start making plans for France, Switzerland remain under threat from Slovenia in the race for the second and final automatic qualifying spot.

Delph left the fray after pulling up injured inside the first 20 seconds in scenes that recalled his Manchester City debut against Real Madrid in a pre-season friendly, when he had gone off after only 19 minutes.

Ross Barkley was the England substitute who found himself peeling off his tracksuit top sooner than expected.

Every sight of goal for Rooney drew a roar of expectation from the crowd and in the 17th minute he was released by James Milner, only to steer his shot wide. Three minutes later the roles were reversed. Milner’s low drive obliged Sommer to block.

Hodgson took action mid-way through the second half, introducing Kane for Jonjo Shelvey and shifting from a 4-3-3 system to a 4-2-3-1 that saw Rooney drop back into a number 10 role. Kane supplied the breakthrough 10 minutes later with an assured left-foot finish from Luke Shaw’s low cross.

After Swiss centre-back Timm Klose had threatened an unlikely solo goal by blundering through a succession of challenges, the sight that the 75,751 fans in the ground had come to see arrived.

Xhaka felled Raheem Sterling, Italian referee Gianluca Rocchi pointed to the spot, and Rooney blasted his way into English football history.

“Wayne Rooney is a legend of world and European football,” said Switzerland coach Vladimir Petkovic. “I think he’ll just get better. It’s a shame he got it against us, but I’d like to congratulate him with all my heart.”
