Vietnam win first match at World Cup qualifier

National men’s football team of Vietnam secured their first win at the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying round after overcoming Taipei 2-1 at the Taipei Municipal Stadium in Chinese Taiwan on September 8.

Chơi xuất sắc, Công Vinh giúp đội nhà giành chiến thắng trước Đài Loan

After a goalless first half, defender Dinh Tien Thanh put Vietnam ahead at the 53 rd minute with a close-range tap-in after striker Le Cong Vinh’s header from a corner delivered by midfielder Pham Thanh Luong in the right wing.

Substitute forward Wu Chun-ching headed home with eight minutes from the regular time to put the two teams on equal terms.

Vietnam went in front again in the second minute of a 10 minute extra-time following a quick attack involving substitute Tran Phi Son and Vinh.

Son brought the ball in the opponent’s half and passed it to Vinh, who squared it back to Son. Despite losing his balance, Son managed to hit the ball, which caught Chinese Taipei defender and goalkeeper off guard and rolled into the empty net.

With three points from the win, Vietnam rose to third place behind Thailand and Iraq in Group F. In the first match on May 24, Vietnam lost 1-0 to Thailand.

Vietnam will next host Iraq in its third match on October 8 at the My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi.

Viet Nam gear up for Taipei challenge

Viet Nam must win a match against Chinese Taipei on September 8 to hold onto hope of winning a berth at the World Cup 2018.

Tại buổi họp kỹ thuật

Coach Toshiya Miura and his team will arrive in Taipei today and will have three days to prepare for the second Group F round match of the 2018 FIFA World Cup/2019 AFC Asian Cup joint-qualifiers.
Yesterday, Sept 4, all 23 players proved they were in top form with a mandatory medical test assigned by their Japanese coach.
He asked his players to focus completely on the match so that Viet Nam can compete well against Iraq and Thailand, two of its stronger rivals in the group, who also want to secure the top position.
However, he said, beating Taipei, who are considered the weakest team, was not an easy job. Football is unpredictable, so if there is no effort and determination, no one can be successful.
He advised all players to ensure their fitness level and spirits remained high to target winning three points.
Miura spent a lot of time watching Thursday’s match between Iraq and Taipei.
Iraq scored three times in the final 10 minutes of their opening match, as the 2007 AFC Asian Cup champions kicked off their Group rounds with an assured 5-1 win.
Vietnamese players will examine all of their rivals’ plays to form a strategy for their matches.
During squad selection, Miura encountered several objections when he dropped the national favourite Nguyen Cong Phuong and local top scorer Nguyen Van Thang.
Instead, he favoured players with strong interpersonal skills, such as Bui Tien Dung, Do Duy Manh, Tran Phi Son and Hoang Dinh Tung.
These players are divided across the three lines of the team.
Strikers Son and Tung don’t have the ideal athletic form, but they can change the game with unique, unexpected attacks.
They will support key strikers Le Cong Vinh and Mac Hong Quan, who are always Miura’s No 1 picks. For the defence, the 52-year-old coach has faith in Nguyen Xuan Thanh, Dinh Tien Thanh and Nguyen Huu Dung, his secret weapon.
Players showing stable performance, such as Vo Huy Toan, Que Ngoc Hai and Nguyen Thanh Hien, also found a place on the team.
To Vinh Loi, who ended his contract with FLC Thanh Hoa last week, is the No 1 goalkeeper of the team.
His substitutes are Tran Nguyen Manh of Song Lam Nghe An and Nguyen Tuan Manh of Sanna Khanh Hoa, who is back with the national team after a three-year absence.
Like Viet Nam, the hosts have also announced their list of players, including those who are currently playing abroad.
Among them is Xavier Chen, who played for KV Mechelen in Belgium for five years before moving to China’s Guizhou Renhe. Midfielder Victor Chou used to be a member of Club Deportivo Salmantino in Spain. Veteran Chen Po-liang is competing for Hangzhou Greentown Club in the Chinese Super League.
The match will be aired live on K+ TV and replayed on channel VTV6 from the Municipal Stadium at 6pm.
According to Tran Huu Nghia, president of the Viet Nam Football Fan Association, there are many Vietnamese people working and living in Taipei. Some 7,000 of them will attend the match, with many more coming in from Viet Nam to support the national team, waving a huge national flag.
In another group match, Iraq faces group leader Thailand, who topped the table following wins over Viet Nam (1-0) and Chinese Taipei (2-0).
The group winners and four best runners-up (12 teams in total) will advance to the 2019 AFC Asian Cup finals and the final round of qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
The 24 next best teams from the preliminary stage of the joint qualifiers will compete in a separate competition for the remaining 12 slots in the 24-team 2019 Asian Cup.

New players called up for national team

Coach Toshiya Miura has called upon two new recruits and many young players to join his 23-member list in preparation for the 2018 World Cup qualifier against Chinese Taipei.

Tuyển Việt Nam tích cực tập luyện

Recruits are striker Hoang Dinh Tung of Thanh Hoa and goalkeeper Nguyen Tuan Manh of Sanna Khanh Hoa.
With 13 goals scored in the ongoing National Premier League, Tung is considered one of best scorers in the league.
This is the first time Tung and Manh have called in the national team under the guidance of Japanese coach Miura.
Some U20 players were also called because of their progress over the past year, such as defender Bui Tien Dung of Hoang Anh Gia Lai, midfielders Do Duy Manh of Ha Noi T&T and Nguyen Huu Dung of Thanh Hoa.
The rest of the list includes familiar names, such as strikers Le Cong Vinh of Binh Duong and Nguyen Van Quyet of Ha Noi T&T, as well as midfielder Pham Thanh Luong of Ha Noi T&T.
Viet Nam will meet Chinese Taipei on September 8 at Municipal Stadium.

Thais prove they are best in region

Thailand proved that they are the best team in the region at all levels of football.

U19 Thái Lan (giữa) dễ dàng vượt qua U19 Việt Nam để đoạt Cúp vô địch

Sept 4, they shredded the Viet Nam’s net for a 6-0 victory in the final of the ASEAN Football Federation’s U19 Championship in Vientiane, Laos.
Captain Worachit Kanit-sribumphen and midfielder Anon Amornlertsak bagged a double each while Suksan Mungpao and Ritthidet Phensawat were the other goal scorers.
After studying the playing style of Viet Nam for nearly 45 minutes Thailand opened the goal scoring spree with Kanit-sribumphen hitting home in the last seconds of the first half.
His shot touched Viet Nam’s midfielder Mai Duc Viet Anh and changed direction to go to the net under goalkeeper Nguyen Thanh Tuan’eyes, who had kept the net clean till then.
Kanitsribumphen ended up as the best scorer of the tournament with his second goal in the 84th minute, to make it six in the tournament.
The Thais showed better skills and understanding between members during the match. They were not only good at combining with each other in a small area but also excelled with their long passes.
Mungpao made it 2-0, 12 minutes after the interval, when he broke away from the Vietnamese defenders to net into the right corner.
While Viet Nam struggled to find its way into the Thai box, their rival made it 3-0 easily in the 69th minute. Phensawat ran from behind into the box and converted his teammate’s accurate pass into a goal with a straight shot that was out of Tuan’s reach, although it had the Vietnamese at full stretch.
Viet Nam missed their best chance of the match as substitute Nguyen Tien Linh gave a smart pass to Ha Duc Chinh whose shot hit the pole. The ball then came to defender Ho Tan Tai, but his close-range header again hit the cross bar.
Captain Nguyen Trong Dai made an awful mistake in the box in an attempt to defend his net, leading to a penalty for the Thais just three minutes before the end.
Amornlertsak scored the fifth goal for his side and needed another two minutes to secure his second with a strong shot that found no resistance from Tuan.
In the third-place play-off earlier yesterday Laos won a historic bronze medal after beating Malaysia 3-2 in a penalty shootout.
It is their first ever medal in a regional tournament and the glory was also shared by Vietnamese Phan Ton Loi, who is the head coach of the team.
The match was forced into a shootout after a 1-1 draw at the end of official time.
Laos’ goalkeeper Saymanolinh Paseuth was the hero of the team for successfully saving three shots from the Malaysian side.

Vietnam rise in global football ranking

Vietnam’s men’s football moved up one spot in the World Football Federation (FIFA)’s ranking table, released on September 3.

20150904104948-1

Holding 152nd place, the country maintained its third position in Southeast Asia behind the top ranked Philippines – who was at a standstill at 125th but ahead of Thailand at 137th.
Globally, Argentina remained on top, followed by Belgium and Germany. The Wales team was at 9th place and ranked above England for the first time.

Vietnam to play Thailand for U-19 title

Viet Nam’s coach, Hoang Anh Tuan was confident that his team would defeat Thailand in the final of the ASEAN Football Federation’s U-19 Championship today, Sept 4.

U19 Việt Nam vui mừng chiến thắng

After a 4-0 victory over host Laos in the semi-finals on Wednesday together with a brilliant performance of striker Ha Duc Chinh, who scored a hat-trick, Tuan strongly believes in his chances.
“The confidence is growing in the team. We had a slow start, but now the team is at a good level,” Tuan said.
“It will be tough in the final against Thailand, but I believe it could be anybody’s game.” Tuan said, and added that his players were getting better after each match and seemed determined for a win, which was what satisfied him the most.
The 47-year-old coach praised Chinh who is currently the top scorer in the tournament with five goals.
“Chinh wasted numerous chances in previous matches in some unbelievable ways. But he shone brilliantly in the semi-final match against Laos. He did a very good job as a striker,” Tuan said.
He also appreciated the captain, Nguyen Trong Dai’s contribution.
“Dai is a key link in the team. He is calm and careful. He is really a leader of the team.”
Talking about the final, Tuan said he had watched Thailand carefully and believed Viet Nam had the chance to beat the most powerful team, which had scored 20 goals.
“Thailand has scored more goals than Viet Nam, but their rivals in the group stage are not as good as Viet Nam. But they will find it very difficult when they meet stronger rivals,” he said.
“It is not important to score many goals. In my opinion, what matters is the final result,” Tuan explained.
He said Thailand would be under more pressure than Viet Nam as they are the former defending champions and will face a team whose net is clean from the beginning of the tournament.
Viet Nam has scored 14 goals in five matches and goalkeeper Nguyen Thanh Tuan and the effective defence are expected to continue to keep the net safe for one more match.
“I am confident about the ability of my players, and Viet Nam, which finished second in the two previous championships, will play fair with Thailand and have the opportunity to be champions.”
The final will be at 7pm and aired live on VTV6 channel.
After the Vientiane event, the team will take part in a qualifying round of the Asian Championships in Myanmar later this month.
Viet Nam are in Group G with Hong Kong, East Timor, Brunei and the hosts.
For a berth in the final round, participants will have to vie for the group’s top position or be one of the five best second-placed teams. Group G’s games will be held at the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon.
Viet Nam will first meet Hong Kong on September 28.

Promises, doubts linger ahead of last matches of Vietnam’s football league

Although football officials have promised to employ measures to prevent match-fixing and competing clubs have promised not to throw games, fans suspect that some will ‘donate points’ to those battling against relegation when Vietnam’s top-flight V-League 1 is drawing to an end.

YbejOWSo

In the closing stage of the V-League 1, those clubs that have accumulated enough points to stay in the competition tend to ‘slack off’ and lose games with teams that are in desperate need of points to avoid being relegated.

This is to build ‘connections’ so that those ‘donating points’ that way will get ‘help’ from the clubs receiving the favor whenever they get into trouble sometime in the future.

The V-League 1, where 14 clubs are competing, will wrap up in three weeks, with some early matches of the 24th round taking place today.

Three ‘sensitive’ matches of this round are Can Tho – Song Lam Nghe An, Dong Tam Long An – Dong Nai, and Hoang Anh Gia Lai – Hanoi T&T.

Song Lam Nghe An, Dong Tam Long An, and Hanoi T&T are in the safe zone now while their rivals are bottom-ranked and striving to escape from the relegation area.

Nguyen Minh Ngoc, head of the organizing board of the V-League 1, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that he will take necessary measures to prevent teams from “throwing games to build networks and connections.”

The Vietnam Football Federation has sent letters to the competing clubs, urging them to play football in an honest and sportsmanlike manner.

The federation said its officials will coordinate with police to keep a close watch on ‘sensitive’ matches in the final rounds of the league to timely respond if match-rigging occurs.

Coaches have promised that their players will play fair football while admitting inexplicable losses may come any time.

After recent matches, the supporters of several clubs hung banners appealing to police to investigate suspected defeats by a few teams because they thought the games had been fixed.

The supporters called for police to probe the 1-3 loss of Song Lam Nghe An to Hoang Anh Gia Lai in the 22nd round on August 22 and the 1-2 defeat of Dong Tam Long An against Can Tho last week.

Earlier, the fans of Hai Phong FC had hung banners to request police officers to look into the loss of their club to Can Tho.

It is this subtle rigging that has eroded the confidence of supporters and sponsors in Vietnam’s top-flight football league and downgraded the value of the competition.

Toyota spends just VND30 billion (US$1.4 million) a year to become the main sponsor of the V-League 1 but it costs the firm VND170 billion ($7.7 million) to be the sponsor of Thailand’s Thai Premier League.

If the former champions manage to achieve this much, they would emerge among the top two teams for the fifth year in a row.
Their first task today will be to defeat Hoang Anh Gia Lai who are strongly trying to escape any possibility of being pushed into relegation at the Pleiku Stadium.
The capital representative are in their form with 11 matches in a row without a loss. The result strongly pushed them upward from fairly low in the ranks to the second position now with 43 points.
“Ha Noi T&T have a chance to be the runners-up this season but also face a threat to not figure even in the top three,” said coach Phan Thanh Hung.
“Our rivals (Hoang Anh Gia Lai, Quang Ninh Coal and Dong Tam Long An) look below our level but they have their own targets so we have to try our best in every game.”
Talking about today’s match versus Hoang Anh Gia Lai, Hung said the team were rising up and was confident now after the recent two wins.
“Playing against them this time will be a challenge for any team. The match will be tense and aggressively played, I think,” Hung said.
“They are at the dead-end now. They will definitely play with even more than 100 per cent of their power against us. The return of their key player, Nguyen Cong Phuong, to this match will help them better plan to attack our net.”
Today, Ha Noi T&T will not have their midfielder Duong Thanh Hao and defender Sam Ngoc Duc will find himself sidelined because of yellow cards.
Despite difficulties, Hung believed in a win for his team. He said there would be no mercy for Hoang Anh Gia Lai.
“Since I started working with Ha Noi T&T, it is the best team I have ever played with. For the match tomorrow, Hoang Anh Gia Lai have an advantage of being a host, just all,” Hung said.
The match is one of the three that have come in for special focus by the organisers trying to avoid any instance of match fixing.
The Viet Nam Football Federation said police are invited to watch the game.
Three FIFA-certificated referees will adjudge the match.
VTV6 channel will be airing the match live from 5pm.
In the first leg match, Ha Noi T&T won 4-3.
Elsewhere today, Dong Tam Long An will play Dong Nai; Can Tho will face former winners Song Lam Nghe An; Dong Thap will host SHB Da Nang; Hai Phong will entertain defending champions Becamex Binh Duong; Sanna Khanh Hoang will welcome Quang Ninh Coal; and Quang Nam will visit FLC Thanh Hoa.

23rd Round of V League preview

All eyes will be on the crucial match between Dong Nai and Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) in the 23rd round of the Toyota V.League today, August 28

B-Bình Dương (trái) và Thanh Hóa (phải) ai sẽ giành chiến thắng

The match is a six-pointer for both teams as they battle to avoid relegation.

Dong Nai and HAGL are currently propping up the table with 17 points after 22 matches.

Dong Nai players have extra incentive, with a bonus of VND1 billion (US$45,500) available should they win. HAGL aren’t offering a bonus due to fears it may distract their players.

“Most of our players are young so we don’t want a bonus distracting them. HAGL has always treated players well so I don’t think prize money is an issue for us,” said HAGL’s chief representative Nguyen Tan Anh.

The Dong Nai managing director Nguyen Van Long said “This match is very important. We need to win to stay in the national premier league. We raised this bonus to boost our players’ spirit”.

The match will be played at Bien Hoa Stadium in the southern province of Dong Nai.

According to Long, security for the match will be stepped up.

“We have about 400 people as security for this match. We hope the game will run smoothly without any incidents. We are determined to win this decisive game,” said Long.

The match will be refereed by Malaysian Abdul Wahab. Dong Nai clearly see this as vital game as they rested several key players against Binh Duong in the 22nd round on Sunday in preparation for the HAGL fixture.

“Players who had received two yellow cards didn’t play against Binh Duong because I was worried they would miss the match with HAGL if they got another yellow card,” said Dong Nai coach Tran Binh Su.

Su believes with the support of the fans on their hometurf Dong Nai will triumph. Notably, HAGL have never beat Dong Nai at Bien Hoa Stadium.

HAGL’s striker Nguyen Cong Phuong misses the match through suspension after picking up three yellow cards.

The Nghe An province-born Phuong scored six of HAGL’s 27 goals this season.

Newly appointed coach Nguyen Quoc Tuan dismissed concerns over Phuong’s absence. He said other players can play in the striker’s position.

In the title race Becamex Binh Duong, who top the table with 45 points, will meet the second placed FLC Thanh Hoa, who have 43 points, at Go Dau Stadium in the southern province of Binh Duong.

The match is expected to draw nationwide attention as a Binh Duong victory will all but clinch the title.

In other fixtures, Ha Noi T&T will meet Khanh Hoa at Hang Day Stadium, Quang Nam face Hai Phong at Tam Ky Stadium, Quang Ninh Coal play Dong Tam Long An at Cam Pha Stadium.

Elsewhere, Song Lam Nghe An meet Dong Thap and SHB Da Nang play Can Tho.
