V.League: Thanh Tung’s double brings Hoang Anh Gia Lai precious win

Without its famed striker Cong Phuong, Hoang Anh Gia Lai managed to secure its first win after 12 rounds at V.League after beating the No.2 team Becamex Binh Duong 2-1 on Sunday.

Becamex Binh Duong, who dropped to 2nd place after losing 1-2 to Khanh Hoa in the previous round, was hoping a win at that away game would help them take back the leading position from Thanh Hoa.
Cong Vinh scored a goal for Becamex Binh Duong just two minutes into the game after outrunning Hoang Anh Gia Lai defenders to defeat goalkeeper Van Tien.
In the 24th minute, Cong Vinh had another goal, but it was disallowed for offside.
Only two minutes later, Hoang Anh Gia Lai’s 19-year-old midfielder Thanh Tung leveled the score, striking the ball in from a corner kick.
It was also Thanh Tung that scored the winning goal in the 50th minute, hitting a side-footed volley out of the air and into the goal.

Both goalkeepers put on a good performance as two teams took turns attacking and defending.
In the 87th minute, Becamex Binh Duong’s Cheik Abass Dieng had the ball in the back of the net only to be denied by the offside flag.
Thanh Hoa maintained its leading position despite losing 1-2 to host Dong Tam Long An.
After 17 rounds, Sanna Khanh Hoa’s Iheroume Uche and Quang Nam’s Tambwe Patiyo leads the top scorers’ table with 11 goals each, followed by Hoang Dinh Tung of Thanh Hoa with 10 goals.

Man City friendly ticket fever yet to be seen in Vietnam

Ticket fever for the friendly match between the English Premier League club Manchester City and the Vietnamese national football team is not occurring as predicted, even though the game will take place in a week.

Fans are pictured coming to My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi on July 19, 2015 to buy tickets to the Vietnam-Manchester City match.

Fans are pictured coming to My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi on July 19, 2015 to buy tickets to the Vietnam-Manchester City match.

About 10,000 tickets for retail did not sell out yesterday. The sale did not attract fans to queue up in long lines as previous matches with other famous foreign teams had.
The retail sale was held from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm on Sunday, but few fans came to buy tickets after 10:00 am, according to witnesses.
The four sets of ticket prices are VND1.8 million (US$83), VND1.5 million ($69), VND1 million ($46) and VND600,000 ($27.6), which are the most expensive of any match with a famous foreign team in Vietnam.
This is quite different from the matches with Arsenal in 2013 and the Brazilian national team in 2008 in Hanoi, when tens of thousands of fans had to wait in line from midnight to buy tickets.
Prices for the match with Arsenal two years ago were VND1.5 million ($69), VND1 million ($46), VND700,000 ($32) and VND400,000 ($18).
Tran Van Nghia, an expert on sports business, said the unsuitable time is the main reason for fans’ ignorance of the match.
The English Premier League club will play the friendly with the Vietnamese national football team on Monday, July 27 in Hanoi.
Monday is not the favorite day for fans to go to a stadium, Nghia said.
In addition, the game will start at 8:00 pm, meaning that fans can only leave the stadium after 10:00 pm and arrive home at midnight.
But one hopeful point is that Vietnamese fans have a habit of buying tickets right before the beginning of a game.
It is hoped that things will change during the final days before the match, Nghia noted.
The match will be broadcast live on national channel VTV6, which is likely another factor discouraging fans from buying expensive tickets.
Before the retail sale yesterday, tickets were available for agencies to book wholesale, but there have not been many orders for them.
A source from the Vietnam Football Federation said it will review the ticket sale today and will not sell retail anymore.

De Rossi: Roma didn’t improve last season

The experienced central midfielder resisted the urge to set a target for the Giallorossi following last term’s relative disappointments.

danielederossi-cropped_11nfhmdaulaq01j8vbx2y9fr5s

Daniele De Rossi believes Roma failed to improve last season as they finished 17 points adrift of Scudetto winners Juventus.

Rudi Garcia guided the Giallorossi to a second successive runners-up spot, but the mood at the Stadio Olimpico was comparatively negative compared to 12 months earlier.

Whereas in 2013-14 they were surprise title contenders, last season they were breathing down Juve’s neck at the winter break before a string of draws saw them drop out of the running and almost finish behind local rivals Lazio.

Roma are among the favourites to end Juve’s four-season Scudetti streak but De Rossi is only focused on performances and not any pre-determined targets.

“To talk about objectives now would be to take advantage of me and I’ve had enough,” the central midfielder told reporters ahead of Roma’s International Champions Cup clash with Manchester City on Tuesday.

“Now the important thing is to play to win. Last year we tried to improve, it didn’t happen, but we achieved a great final result.

“We’re working to take the next step. It’s a high wall in front of us, but we’re working seriously.

“I’m very happy with how I’ve found the team and I get along very well with the coach and my team-mates.”

McCarthy not for sale, says Everton’s Martinez

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has insisted that James McCarthy is not for sale, following reports that Manchester City were preparing to make a bid for the Republic of Ireland international midfielder.

james-mccarthy

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has insisted that James McCarthy is not for sale, following reports that Manchester City were preparing to make a bid for the Republic of Ireland international midfielder.

McCarthy was linked with the former Premier League champions after their failure to sign Aston Villa’s Fabian Delph. However Martinez, who worked with the player at Wigan Athletic before they both joined Everton two years ago, is determined to hold on to the young talent in his squad.

“He is not for sale,” the Spaniard said of McCarthy at the Barclays Asia Trophy in Singapore on Wednesday. “James McCarthy has been a top performer in the last few seasons and at the age of 24, he has already played over 300 games. He has young legs, brings a lot of energy and he is a vital part of our squad.”

Martinez was speaking after his side beat Premier League rivals Stoke City 5-4 in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw at the National Stadium to set up a meeting in Saturday’s Asia Trophy final against Arsenal.

“It was a very interesting game for both sides,” said the Everton boss. “It was more than a pre-season game because normally in pre-season you are looking for that physical aspect and we got that.

The heat and humidity had made conditions difficult, he said, but on top of that “I felt it was a really competitive game … To win the penalty shoot-out was a fantastic feeling and both teams played at a very good level. “And nobody picked up any injuries, which is the best aspect of a game like this.”

Despite the defeat, Stoke manager Mark Hughes was pleased with the performance of his side in their first match of the pre-season. “I thought it was a very accomplished performance and a good workout,” said the Welshman.

“Obviously the conditions were very difficult but I thought that the players coped very well. Individually and collectively we looked strong. It was good and everything seems to be working well. All in all, a very satisfying performance apart from the result.”

Liverpool thump Thai All Stars

A host of new Liverpool signings got their first chance to play in team colours under torrential Bangkok skies Tuesday as the Reds comfortably defeated the Thai All Stars 4-0 in a friendly.

liverpool-6

The English Premier League side were visiting the Thai capital for the first stop on an end-of-season tour that will also take in Malaysia and Australia. Adam Bogdan, Joe Gomez and Danny Ings all made their debut appearance in the first half at the imposing Rajamangala stadium.

Success came within three minutes. A clever pass from Joao Carlos Teixeira found Lazar Markovic, who easily took the ball round the keeper and slotted it home. Shortly before half time it was two as a Teixeira corner found Mamadou Sakho who flicked the ball into the far corner with a thumping header.

Kiatisuk Senamuang’s All Star team, made up of local premier league players, showed energy and determination but were easily outmatched in quality, rarely pestering the Liverpool defenders or goal line.

In contrast Thai keeper Warut Mekmusik was tested throughout, forced to make good saves against shots by Ings and Jordan Rossiter that looked like they were all but going into the back of the net.

The second half began with an entire team change by manager Brendan Rodgers — allowing Nathaniel Clyne, James Milner and Divock Origi to make their debuts — accompanied by driving monsoon rains that hampered visibility and soon turned much of the stadium’s running track into a virtual moat.

As fans and press scurried to the back of the stands to shelter, Liverpool kept on the attack, showing little sign of being bothered by the deluge. In the 52nd minute captain Jordan Henderson picked out Adam Lallana with a cheeky rabona who thundered home the third goal of the night.

New man Origi must have thought he would never make it four with the ball hitting the woodwork twice and a yards out shot denied by a remarkable save from the Thai goalkeeper. But the young Belgian was finally rewarded in the 86th minute with a header off a Henderson cross that careered into the Thai goal.

By the latter stages of the game any hopes for a clever passing game had evaporated with the ball regularly coming a halt in an increasingly waterlogged pitch.

English football commands a huge following in Thailand and it is not uncommon to see entire skyscrapers in Bangkok decked in advertising featuring stars from the premier league. The kingdom has become a regular stopping off point for lucrative pre-season tours around Asia with Chelsea and Leicester both making trips to Thailand this summer.

Liverpool have now made five visits to the capital since 2001, winning four and drawing one. The visitors are scheduled to leave Bangkok after the match for Malaysia.

The tour has been somewhat overshadowed by the absence of Raheem Sterling who had initially been named in the 30 man squad.

On arriving in Bangkok Monday, Rodgers confirmed the 20-year-old was leaving for a rival club, bringing to a close what has become this summer’s most acrimonious transfer. British media say Sterling is off to Manchester City in a £49 million deal.

Van Persie arrives in Istanbul to join Fenerbahce

Dutch international striker Robin Van Persie was on Sunday (Jul 12) given a hero’s welcome by fans as he arrived in Istanbul to join Turkish football giants Fenerbahce on an eagerly-awaited transfer from Manchester United.

Van Persie landed at Sabiha Gokcen airport the Asian side of Istanbul after flying in on a private jet and was given a typically raucous reception by hundreds of supporters clad in the yellow and navy blue colours of the club.

Accompanied by his wife Bouchra Elbali and their two children, he walked out of the airport into a cacophony of chanting from supporters, with the air thick with the smoke from flares lit by the fans. Apparently unfazed by the scenes, he squeezed his way though the crowds of fans and photographers to begin his new life in Turkey.

In a sign of his importance for the club, his entire arrival was covered live on the club’s in house TV channel Fenerbahce TV, including even the landing of the plane and passport control.

‘AN HONOUR’

“I have seen a lot over the years but I have never seen anything like this,” Van Persie told the supporters. “I hope that I’m going to make you happy … it’s an honour.”

Before leaving Manchester airport, Van Persie had posted pictures on social media of himself, already wearing a Fenerbahce scarf, and his family waving goodbye on the tarmac and also one of him at the controls of the plane.

Fenerbahce’s chairman Aziz Yildirim had on Saturday announced the transfer of Van Persie was a done deal and, according to Turkish press reports, his formal signing ceremony is expected on Monday.

Fenerbahce – runners up to hated Istanbul rivals Galatasaray last season in the championship – have gone on a spending spree in a bid to dominate the Super Lig and be a real contender in Europe.

Earlier this week, Fenerbahce signed Portuguese star Nani also from United for €6 million (US$6.7 million) and in June bought Danish centre-back Simon Kjaer from French side Lille. According to press reports, Van Persie’s transfer fee will be €4.7 million (US$5.2 million).

Van Persie, 31, made 105 appearances and scored 58 goals during his three years at Manchester United from August 2012. But his last season was marred by an ankle ligament injury and speculation of tension between himself and Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal, who had guided Van Persie and his countrymen to third place in the World Cup.

In Turkey, Van Persie will be lining up against another fellow member of the Netherlands’ so-called “golden generation”, Wesley Sneijder, who plays for arch rivals Galatasaray.

Fenerbahce’s flurry of transfer market activity is being masterminded by its well-respected new Italian sporting director Giuliano Terraneo who arrived in May on a mission to make the club a European football force. The club’s new manager this season is the Portuguese Vitor Pereira, a former Porto and Olympiacos coach.

Turkish press reports said van Persie may not represent the end of Fenerbahce’s ambition, with the club eyeing Chelsea’s Brazilian midfielder Ramires and even van Persie’s fellow countryman Arjen Robben of Bayern Munich.

Sunderland sign Kaboul from Tottenham

Sunderland have signed French defender Younes Kaboul from Tottenham, the Premier League club announced on (Jul 16).

younes-kaboul-left-clears

Kaboul put pen to paper on a four-year contract with Dick Advocaat’s side after the Black Cats agreed a fee reported to be around £3 million.

“I’m delighted to be a Sunderland player and it’s an honour to join this club. I would like to thank (sporting director) Lee Congerton and the head coach for making this move possible, and I can’t wait to start playing for theSunderland supporters,” Kaboul said.

Kaboul’s positive comments about his move to the Stadium of Light are a stark contrast to the quotes attributed to his agent when he was first linked with a switch to Sunderland way back in 2008.

“Younes would not join Sunderland – even if there was an earthquake,” Rudy Raba said. “We’ve much more interesting options. No disrespect, but playing at Sunderland would not help his international career.”

Having made a seismic change in his views about Sunderland, Kaboul becomes Advocaat’s fourth signing of the transfer window following deals for Sebastian Coates, Adam Matthews and Jeremain Lens.

“He is a very experienced player, which is what we need. He has shown that in his time at Spurs and he will be a very good addition to our squad,” Advocaat said.

The 29-year-old centre-back began his career with Auxerre, joined Tottenham in 2007, then moved to Portsmouth before returning to White Hart Lane in 2010. He felt out of favour with Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino last season and opted to join Sunderland in search of regular first team action.

Tickets to Man City-Vietnam match not yet a ‘hot cake’ as expected

‘A possible fever’ from football fans hunting for a ticket to watch the friendly match this month between English Premier League side Manchester City and the Vietnamese men’s national football team has not occurred in the last few days.

Manchester City representative Sarah White (2nd left) and Dang Trung Dung (2nd right) of SHB Bank are seen at a press conference to announce the friendly match on July 10, 2015.

Manchester City representative Sarah White (2nd left) and Dang Trung Dung (2nd right) of SHB Bank are seen at a press conference to announce the friendly match on July 10, 2015.

Expensive prices are likely the main reason.
Tickets started selling on July 10, but only 50 people have visited the office of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) to book wholesale purchases.
This is quite different from the friendly with Arsenal in 2013, when thousands of fans queued up in long lines while jostling one another to buy tickets.
Tran Duc Linh said he went to the VFF office to book 30 tickets for his workplace, lender Agribank, in Hanoi. Others came to book several tickets each.
The match tickets are available at four prices – VND1.8 million (US$83), VND1.5 million ($69), VND1 million ($46) and VND600,000 ($27.6).
Prices for the match against Arsenal two years ago were VND1.5 million ($69), VND1 million ($46), VND700,000 ($32) and VND400,000 ($18).
SHB Bank, the main sponsor and one of the organizers of the Manchester City match, holds 10,000 tickets for the game, or a quarter of the total count.
Dang Trung Dung, deputy general director of SHB, explained that his bank has not planned to profit from the match because it considers this a non-profit activity.
“It cost SHB a big sum to bring Manchester City to Vietnam as well as other expenses for transport, security and accommodation,” Dung said.
“The high ticket prices are not for recovering the costs, but for matching the value and the trademark of Manchester City.”
It was reported that SHB and other sponsors paid around $1.55 million to bring the Citizens to Hanoi.
The game kicks off at 8:00 pm on July 27 in the Vietnamese capital city.
In 2013, Hoang Anh Gia Lai Group spent around $2.3 million inviting Arsenal to Vietnam.
