Man City’s Gabriel Jesus out with broken foot

Manchester City’s Brazilian goal-scoring sensation Gabriel Jesus has broken his foot, the club said on Tuesdaym (Feb 14), sparking fears he may miss the rest of the season.

The 19-year-old striker, who has scored three goals in five games since joining City in January, suffered a “fractured metatarsal” bone against Bournemouth on Monday. He was brought off in the 15th minute of the 2-0 win which lifted City to second in the Premier League.

City did not say how long Jesus would be sidelined. “He will undergo further examinations in the coming days to establish the extent of his layoff,” said a club statement.

British media reports said Jesus underwent a scan on Tuesday that revealed the fracture. He was pictured walking in Manchester with a protective boot.

City paid Brazilian club Palmeiras an initial £27 million (US$33 million) for Jesus.

The striker scored at West Ham and twice against Swansea and Jesus was hoping to become the third City player – after Emmanuel Adebayor and Kevin de Bruyne – to score on each of his first three Premier League starts.

City manager Pep Guardiola said after the Bournemouth game that he was “praying” the damage would not be serious.

The Brazilian’s impact has been so dramatic that reports had said Argentinian striker Sergio Aguero could leave.

Aguero came on to replace Jesus at Bournemouth and is now set to reclaim his place as number one striker.

The injury is a particular blow to City as the Premier League campaign intensifies and they meet Monaco in the Champions League last 16 first leg next week.

Medical experts say that on average, a broken metatarsal needs about eight weeks recovery. Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has had a broken metatarsal three times and needed between six weeks and three months to return.

Doctors recommend four to eight weeks rest. The treatment depends on the extent of the damage.

If the foot is bad enough to warrant being put in plaster, he would have to keep the cast for four to six weeks.

Jesus would then make a gradual return with exercises to increase the strain he can put on the foot. The return could be another four weeks or more.

Di Maria stars as brilliant PSG stun Barcelona

Angel Di Maria scored a brilliant brace on his birthday as Paris Saint-Germain sensationally destroyed Barcelona 4-0 at the Parc des Princes in their Champions League last 16 first leg on Tuesday (Feb 14)

Di Maria, the former Real Madrid star, opened the scoring in the 18th minute and curled in another 10 minutes into the second half to celebrate his 29th birthday in style.

January signing Julian Draxler also netted in between while Edinson Cavani marked his 30th birthday by adding his name to the scoresheet in the 71st minute in the French capital.

Barcelona were completely stunned, the defeat their biggest European humiliation since losing 7-0 on aggregate to Bayern Munich in the semi-finals in 2013.

They are now staring at a first exit from the competition before the quarter-finals in a decade, unless they can pull off a miraculous escape in the second leg at the Camp Nou next month.

This was PSG’s night, though, and Unai Emery’s side will surely go on to secure a fifth successive appearance in the quarter-finals.

“To win 4-0 against Barcelona on my birthday is incredible, we are so happy. It was the perfect match and we are delighted with the result,” Di Maria told beIN Sports.

“To go through we will need to produce another performance like this. We scored four goals but they are capable of doing the same thing.”

PSG had twice been eliminated from the Champions League at the hands of Barcelona in the last four seasons, and the Catalans also had a fearsome record in games against sides coached by Emery, losing just one of 23 before this.

But Luis Enrique’s team, for all the brilliance of Lionel Messi, have recently looked more fragile than in a long time and the French champions showed no fear.

They were without injured captain Thiago Silva and the suspended Thiago Motta, meaning a start for Adrien Rabiot in midfield and a Champions League debut in defence for 21-year-old Presnel Kimpembe.

Draxler also made his European debut for the club and the German was superb as PSG pressed Barcelona high right from the off — the home side had already worked Marc-Andre ter Stegen in the Barca goal before they got the opener.

The menacing Draxler was fouled just outside the area and Di Maria bent the resulting free-kick over the wall and in for his third goal in the Champions League this season.

LACKLUSTRE BARCA

Crocked following an early foul by Rabiot, Neymar was off the field receiving treatment as the Parc des Princes crowd erupted.

He was able to continue, but the visitors were lacklustre, Luis Suarez starved of service, Messi quiet and skipper Andres Iniesta struggling to cope.

One Neymar acceleration did lead to an Andre Gomes shot that was turned behind by Kevin Trapp, but otherwise the chances were at the other end.

Ter Stegen saved from Draxler after a counterattack, but there was nothing he could do as the German made it 2-0 five minutes from half-time, exchanging passes with Marco Verratti and rifling a shot past the goalkeeper from the right side of the area.

The expectation was that Barcelona would come out fighting after the restart but instead they fell further behind in the 55th minute to a piece of brilliance from Di Maria.

The move started with Trapp rolling a goal-kick out to Rabiot on the edge of his own box and the midfielder turning away under pressure from Messi. It ended with Di Maria curling a left-foot shot high into the top-left corner of the net from the edge of the other area.

Di Maria then came off to a standing ovation, but Paris were not finished. Thomas Meunier surged forward from right-back and set up Cavani, who thumped home his 34th goal of the season in all competitions.

A miserable night for Barcelona was compounded when Samuel Umtiti hit the post late on.

Digne backs ’MSN’ to outgun PSG once more

Lucas Digne says Barcelona’s deadly strike force will again carry them past Paris Saint Germain when the teams meet at the Parc des Princes in the Champions League last-16 on Tuesday.

web13305101646am

At just 23, left-back Digne has already experienced the demands at the top level with PSG in his homeland and Roma in Italy, but nothing comes close to the demands he faces day-to-day since joining Barcelona in July.

“When you are a competitor, you always want to win. This locker room was born for that, this club is made for that,” Digne told AFP in an exclusive interview.

“Every year you have to win trophies and that’s how it is. That’s what we are playing for.

“All players dream of winning trophies, it is that adrenaline that we seek.”

Digne already has the Spanish Super Cup from this season to add to the eight trophies he won in just two years at PSG.

However, much bigger challenges and prizes await with Barca in search of a second treble in three years.

Luis Enrique’s men travel to the French capital for the first leg of their Champions League last 16 clash on Tuesday just one point off the top of La Liga

and already having booked their place in the final of the Copa del Rey.

Digne was on the losing side when Barca propelled themselves towards a fifth European Cup by sweeping aside PSG 5-1 on aggregate at the quarter-final stage two years ago.

Luis Suarez and Neymar combined for the goals in that tie, but Lionel Messi remains the senior partner in Barca’s frightening ’MSN’ front three.

“Leo is magic. He is the best player in the world,” added Digne.

“When you have the best forwards in the world, it can always make a difference.

“The goal of football is to score goals, so if you have the best attack, for sure it helps.”

Despite an outlay totalling hundreds of millions of euros, PSG are yet to break the glass ceiling of the last eight in the Champions League since owners Qatar Sports Investments took control of the club six years ago.

Domestic dominance wasn’t enough to save Laurent Blanc his job at the end of last season as the owners tired of European failure with Sevilla’s three-time winning Europa League coach Unai Emery put in place.

But Digne believes even more time is needed for PSG to break into the Champions League elite.

The history of a club is very important. I think we have to give them time to build.

“The fact that they have changed staff, they are in full construction of a new project so we must give them time.”

Digne’s decision to move to the Camp Nou with his career trajectory on the rise was questioned with Spanish international and Catalan native Jordi Alba sanding in his way of a regular starting place at left-back.

Yet, Barca boss Luis Enrique’s desire to rotate has meant he has already made 20 appearances this season.

“I’ve played a lot, I’ve played important matches. I’m at the biggest club in the world at 23 years old,” he added.

“A lot of people would like to be where I am today and I’m really happy about that.

“I said that it was a dream to play for this club and that it would be really great for me to have an experience like this.

“Today I am lucky enough to be able to do so. It was in the back of my mind to be able to reach the highest level. Having such a chance is a wonderful thing for me.” AFP

Wounded Dortmund strive for Benfica remedy

Borussia Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel hopes the return of the Champions League will provide the jolt his inconsistent side need ahead of Tuesday’s visit to Benfica in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

web13a514101836am

The Germans tormented opposing defences and finished above European champions Real Madrid in Group F after setting a new group-stage goals record, but they have failed to reproduce their best form domestically.

Dortmund, who won their lone Champions League title in 1997, fell an alarming 15 points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich following Saturday’s shock 2-1 loss at bottom side Darmstadt.

“I never got the feeling we really got going,” Tuchel said after Dortmund saw their nine-match unbeaten run snapped, albeit a series that included just three victories.

“We were simply a long way below our limit and we have to admit they (Darmstadt) deserved to win.”

Dortmund fielded three teenagers at Darmstadt, with 18-year-old Dzenis Burnic making his German league debut in the absence of injured defensive duo Marcel Schmelzer and Lukasz Piszczek.

But Tuchel predicted Tuesday’s clash in Lisbon would elicit a strong response from his players, with Ousmane Dembele, Andre Schuerrle and Shinji Kagawa all in contention to return to the starting line-up after coming off the bench at the weekend.

“In all honesty, we come into our own when it’s a 50-50 game,” said Tuchel, his thoughts echoed by goalkeeper Roman Buerki.

“On Tuesday, we play against a different opponent with a different way of playing,” the Swiss international added.

Jonas, Jimenez fit again

Greece striker Kostas Mitroglou scored twice as Benfica eased past Arouca 3-0 on Friday to remain one point clear of Porto at the top of the Portuguese league.

Tuesday’s fixture at the Estadio da Luz will be the first meeting between Benfica and Dortmund since the first round of the 1963/64 European Cup, a tie the German club won 6-2 on aggregate.

Benfica, European champions in 1961 and 1962, advanced with the fewest points (eight) of any team to this season’s knockout phase and are looking to reach the quarter-finals for the third time in six years.

Dortmund’s record-breaking 21-goal haul in the group stage was founded largely on thumping 6-0 and 8-4 wins over Poland’s Legia Warsaw, while they triumphed 2-1 over Sporting in Lisbon in October.

Veteran Brazilian forward Jonas, who scored 32 times in Portugal last season, will make his first appearance in Europe this season after missing the group stage with an ankle injury.

The 32-year-old has netted eight goals in all competitions since his return from a four-month lay-off in mid-December.

Mexico international Raul Jimenez made his first appearance of the new year last weekend, coming off the bench against Arouca following injury, and warned of the challenge facing the hosts.

“It is going to be difficult as any Champions League match. We have to be at our best,” said Jimenez, while Peru international Andre Carrillo was confident Benfica’s home support would provide a considerable boost to Rui Vitoria’s side.

Hoàng Anh Gia Lai beat Cần Thơ in V.League 1

Hoàng Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) defeated Cần Thơ 3-0 in the fifth round of V.League 1 at Pleiku Stadium in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai yesterday.

Midfielder Vũ Văn Thanh opened the scoring for HAGL in the 57thminute, while striker Nguyễn Công Phượng scored two more goals for the hosts in the 67th and 77th minute.

“I, and the entire team, are very glad when we have three points on our home turf. We tried our best to earn this win. We are very young, but we played very decisively and we were united,” said Phượng.

“I found the confidence in my way of playing. This win will be a spiritual driving force for me and my teammates to play in the next rounds,” Phượng added.

In other matches yesterday, Quảng Nam crushed Sông Lam Nghệ An 3-0, and Quảng Ninh bested Khánh Hòa 3-0.
Also, FLC Thanh Hóa beat HCM City FC 1-0 on Saturday.
HCM City’s way of playing attack-defence made Thanh Hóa meet many difficulties in scoring in the official 90 minutes.
In the first minute of extra time, in a confused situation before HCM City’s goal, midfielder Hoàng Văn Bình scored a goal for Thanh Hóa.
With three points, Thanh Hóa continue leading the rankings with 13 points.
“My team’s win is not by luck. We not only have foreign players scoring goals, but domestic footballers also do well,” said Thanh Hóa’s coach, Ljubomir Petrovic.
Petrovic said if his team took full advantage of all opportunities, they would score more goals.
Meanwhile, the acting chairman of HCM City Lê Công Vinh admitted that his club played successfully, in terms of tactics, however, they were not lucky in scoring.
In other news, defending champions Hà Nội T&T tied with SHB Đà Nẵng 1-1 at Hàng Đẫy Stadium.
Nguyễn Quang Hải opened the score for hosts Hà Nội in the first half, while Vũ Phong levelled the score for the visiting Đà Nẵng in the second half.

This was the fourth goal for Hải after five matches in this year’s tournament. The 19-year-old midfielder is the best second scorer in the league.

The capital team Hà Nội T&T lacked two key players, Gonzalo Damian Marronkle and Hoàng Vũ Samson, because of an injury and a suspension in this match, so they also did not have many opportunities and played to a draw.

“Hà Nội dominated the match and created many chances to score goals, but we missed. Marronkle had an ankle injury, so I couldn’t use him. How unfortunate!” said coach Chu Đình Nghiêm.
However, Nghiêm also praised Hải’s performance.
“I am very satisfied with Hải’s performance. If he is strong, he will be my No 1 choice in every game,” said Nghiêm.
Elsewhere, Đồng Tâm Long An lost to Hải Phòng 1-2 and Sài Gòn FC drew even with Bình Dương 1-1. — VNS

VN football set out ambitious goals

With ambitious plans, proven results and a busy schedule, Vietnamese fooballers are working hard and earning their fans’ support.

football54953822pm

The U16 team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Asian championship for the first time in 16 years. The U19 team bagged a berth in the FIFA World Cup U20 for the first time in history. The women’s U16 and U19 squads were successful at the Asian qualification rounds and advanced to the final. The futsal team competed in the quarter-finals of the Colombia World Cup on their debut.

The best may be yet to come: according to the Việt Nam Football Federation (VFF), 12 national teams will participate in international tournaments this year.

Among them, the men’s U15 and U18 squads will compete at the ASEAN championships and the Asian championship qualifications. The women’s U16s and U19s teams, meanwhile, will play at the Asian championship finals.

Notably, the U22 team will participate in the all-important 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Malaysia in August. Earlier, the U20 squad will compete at the World Cup final in South Korea in May and the national team will participate in the 2019 Asian Cup’s final qualification next month.

The national team were the only squad that did not successfully complete their task at last year’s ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Cup and will have to win fans’ hearts again by winning a berth to the Asian Cup’s final round, an event that will begin March 28.

Paired in a group with Jordan, Afghanistan and Cambodia, Việt Nam, world No 136, are aiming for the second position in the group, ranking behind No 107 Jordan.

The young U20 team will make their debut at a world-level event this year, but coaches are hopeful for a win in the group round.

At the World Cup, the team will compete against Argentina, Brazil and Portugal.

“It is an honour and also a challenge for the players as they have secured a berth at the World Cup. However, they are still at a lower level compared with their rivals, even those in Asia. I think there is no better chance than this for them to gain experience and learn something from the World Cup,” VFF Vice President Trần Quốc Tuấn said.

“However, they should not be satisfied with this limited success. They must take inspiration from the futsal team – with careful preparation through training and friendly competitions, they were one of the top eight at the World Cup last year,” he said.

Despite competing all over the world, the SEA Games title is, however, always the most coveted for Việt Nam.

The team are seeking their first gold medal at the games this August.

“We have talented players and all are excited to emerge victorious. But we should study our rivals so we can prepare better for our journey, not only for the SEA Games, but also for other tournaments in the future,” Tuấn said.

This year there is good news for Asian countries — the World Cup 2026 will be extended to 48 teams and the Asian continent will have four more slots — opening the door for more teams, including Việt Nam.

“There are different ideas, but in my opinion, the extension will help narrow the gap between Asian teams and teams from Europe and South America. It also makes qualification rounds more competitive, while federations will strongly support their teams to increase their opportunities,” Tuấn, the only Vietnamese official at the Asian Football Confederation, said.

However, he said the Vietnamese national team could take part in the World Cup if the young squads are regular participants at world cups for the youth.

“It is in 2026, so we have several years to build our plan. But the solution lies in developing youth football,” Tuấn said.

The futsal team also expect high results this year following their great performance in 2016.

The team beat defending champions Japan in the quarterfinals of the Asian championship in February, following which they made the nation proud by securing a berth at the World Cup’s last-eight round.

At the club level, Thái Sơn Nam grabbed a silver medal of the Asian Futsal Club Championship.

Their next events will be the ASEAN Championship, the Asian Indoor Games and the crucial SEA Games.

“We have had outstanding achievements last year. We need to maintain our performance for the upcoming events. We are confident of reaching the final round at the regional tournaments and especially at the SEA Games this August,” captain Nguyễn Bảo Quân said.

The team were also preparing for their long-term target, eyeing the second World Cup berth in 2020.

“Our result in 2016 was not by chance. It resulted from our 10-year preparation with methodical plan and strong support,” Trần Anh Tú, head of VFF’s Futsal Department, said. — VNS

In the first round, Bình Phước will host Đắk Lắk; Huế will entertain Nam Định and Viettel will visit Đồng Tháp. Tây Ninh start their journey next week.

They will compete in a two-leg competition. The first leg is from February 11 to March 18. The second is from April 1 to July 22.

There will have only one team with the best result promoted to the V. League 1 next season. Meanwhile, the bottom-ranked team will take part in a play-off match against a team which ranks fourth in the Second Division tournament. Burnley’s Brady checks Chelsea charge

Home debutant Robbie Brady scored a memorable free-kick to earn Burnley a 1-1 draw on Sunday (Feb 12) that prevented Chelsea moving 12 points clear at the Premier League summit.

Brady cancelled out an early strike from Pedro and while the point stretched Chelsea’s lead to 10 points, their advantage will be trimmed to eight points if Manchester City win at Bournemouth on Monday.

Brady’s goal continued his recent run of success against Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, with the winger having also scored the winning goal for Ireland against Conte’s Italy in the Euro 2016 group stage.

“We must be disappointed at the point because I think this type of game we could win,” said Conte.

“It is a pity. We started very well and created chances to score and then Burnley found the goal with the free-kick. Now it is important to restart.

“We know there is a long way (to the end of the season). It is important to work and play this type of game and fight.”

Burnley, whose home record is bettered only by second-place Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea themselves, looked like they might be swept away following an electrifying start from the league leaders.

But Sean Dyche’s team, who had won seven straight games at Turf Moor after losing to Manchester City in mid-November, showed great resilience and deservedly equalised after 24 minutes through Brady.

A foul by Nemanja Matic on Joey Barton on the edge of the area presented Brady, a club-record £13 million (US$16.2 million) signing from Norwich City last month, with his chance.

He took it in style, curling a magnificent 20-yard free-kick over the wall and into the top-left corner. That cancelled out an equally impressive opener from Chelsea that was started, and finished, by Pedro in the seventh minute.

The Spanish winger helped begin the attack deep in his own half with a pass to Eden Hazard who, in turn, fed Victor Moses on the right.

After skipping past Brady’s crude challenge, Moses crossed for Pedro, who had covered nearly 70 yards, and his low, angled shot gave Tom Heaton no chance in the Burnley goal.

FURIOUS TEMPO

Chelsea had threatened to simply sweep their hosts away during a positive opening in which they repeatedly hit Burnley on the break.

But after weathering that pressure, the Clarets began to show why they have become so feared on their own turf.

Ashley Barnes was presented with a couple of half-chances before the equaliser and, soon after it, Andre Gray flashed an inviting low cross through the Chelsea six-yard box.

Burnley should even have taken a lead into the interval after Barton found full-back Matt Lowton, who only had Thibaut Courtois to beat but was denied by a solid block from the Chelsea goalkeeper.

The furious tempo of the game continued after the restart, with a mistake by Matic and an error by David Luiz culminating in Gray gathering Barnes’ pass and shooting straight at Courtois.

In response, and thanks to a Ben Bee mistake at the other end, Diego Costa had a shot blocked before Cesar Azpilicueta chanced his luck with a long-range shot that just cleared the Burnley crossbar.

Burnley substitute Scott Arfield was also guilty of a potentially costly error when his weak clearance was picked up by Hazard, but the Chelsea man’s effort was hurried and well over.

Yet another Chelsea attack ended in similar fashion a few minutes later with substitute Cesc Fabregas slicing a shot hopelessly wide from the edge of the penalty area.

Arfield almost twisted and turned his way through on goal late on, but Luiz’s challenge prevented him from giving Burnley six successive home league victories for the first time in 56 years.

“It was a strong performance against a top, top side,” said Burnley manager Dyche. “I want us to be awkward to play against and be productive and we showed that.”

Cyprien rifled in the only goal after just seven minutes at the Allianz Riviera as Nice bounced back from Saturday’s heavy defeat at Cote d’Azur and title rivals Monaco.

Nice moved back level on points with second-placed Paris Saint-Germain after just a second win in six league matches.

Alexandre Lacazette scored his 19th goal of the season as Lyon produced an encouraging response in the wake of last weekend’s damaging Rhone derby defeat to thrash Nancy 4-0.

Mathieu Valbuena curled in a superb 39th-minute opener with his final touch before hobbling off injured at Parc OL, while Nabil Fekir grabbed a second before half-time.

Lacazette then struck from the penalty spot after substitute Memphis Depay was fouled in the area, with the ex-Manchester United winger netting his first goal for his new club to cap the rout.

Dimitri Payet was set to make his first Marseille start since his controversial return to the club from West Ham in Wednesday’s late game against Guingamp.

On Tuesday, first-half goals from Kamil Glik and Kylian Mbappe ensured Monaco remained top of the table after a hard-fought 2-1 win at Montpellier.

Paris Saint-Germain needed an injury-time winner from Brazilian Lucas to secure a 2-1 victory over Lille after a goalkeeping blunder from Alphonse Areola allowed Nicolas de Preville to cancel out Edinson Cavani’s league-leading 23rd goal of the season.

French Ligue 1 results:

Lyon 4 Nancy 0
Nice 1 Saint-Etienne 0
Angers 0 Rennes 0
Metz 2 Dijon 1
