U23 team coach aims for berth in Asia U23 finals

The Vietnamese Olympic, or under-23 (U23), football team’s head coach Toshiya Miura set his sights on securing a seat in the finals of the second Asian Football Confederation (AFC)’s U23 Football Championship 2015.

Every player will have to play to the best of their ability to achieve that goal, Miura told reporters during the team’s first day of training in preparation for the qualifying round of the AFC U23 Championship on February 25 in Hanoi.

The 30-player squad is undergoing a training regime of two sessions a day before the shortlist of 23 players for the final squad is announced in three weeks.

Vietnam is now ranked in the top 20 football teams in Asia and has a reasonable chance to compete for a place in the finals in Qatar early next year, Miura said, adding that all players will have to compete for positions in the squad.

Miura kept quiet about what playing style the team will use, saying that he is still searching for the best players.

During the month-long training, the team will have three international friendly matches as well as two matches with the two-time V-League champions Hanoi T&T and V-League 2015’s in-form Quang Ninh Coal.

After the matches, the final team will fly to Malaysia to begin the qualifiers where they are to face Japan, Malaysia and Macau in group I.

A total of 43 teams will be competing for 15 slots alongside the host nation. The teams are divided into ten groups, with the ten group winners and the five best runners-up qualifying for the final tournament.

Monaco heap more Champions League agony on Arsenal

AS Monaco gave Arsenal a lesson in patient, counter-attacking football to win their Champions League last 16 first leg-match 3-1 in London on Wednesday, heaping more European agony on Arsene Wenger.

Arsenal boss Wenger, a former manager at Monaco, is now facing elimination at this stage of the competition for the fifth straight season after the shattering home defeat.

French midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia put the visitors ahead after 38 minutes, when he crashed in a long range shot that took a deflection off Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker, leaving goalkeeper David Ospina helpless.

Bulgarian veteran Dimitar Berbatov, continually jeered by the home fans because of his past links with their arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur, added the second after 53 minutes after a devastating Monaco counter-attack.

Arsenal pulled one back in stoppage time when substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain curled home from the edge of the area, but Monaco scored even later to restore their two-goal advantage when substitute Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco scored with a shot that went in off the post.

Arsenal wasted several chances with Olivier Giroud spurning four scoring opportunities to leave Arsenal with a mountain to climb when Wenger takes his side back to the principality for the second leg on March 17.

Rock solid

Wenger’s Arsenal, who had won eight of their last nine matches in all competitions, flew out of the blocks against his old team, testing the resilience of Monaco’s rock-solid defence with a series of early raids.

Giroud went close with a header during Arsenal’s opening dominant spell, and then wasted three chances after the break before being substituted, but Monaco weathered the early storm, subduing both the crowd and the home players.

The visitors gradually played their way into the match with winger Anthony Martial and Joao Moutinho looking particularly dangerous, but it was still a surprise when they took the lead through Kondogbia’s long-range effort.

There was no real surprise, however, when they doubled their advantage as they were playing the better football when Berbatov’s powerful finish ended a swift break.

The hosts were given a lifeline in the first minute of stoppage time when Oxlade-Chamberlain pounced on a clearing header before curling home, but their celebrations were short-lived as Ferreira-Carrasco finished emphatically.

Monaco had scored only four goals in their six group stage matches and it was not hard to see why as Brazilian defender Wallace and Tunisian Aymen Abdennour were towers at the back.

Arsenal have shown plenty of resilience themselves over the years to come back against the odds, but will have to surpass themselves to save the tie now.

AFC Champions League: Shandong Luneng beats Becamex Binh Duong 3-2

Becamex Binh Duong became the second Vietnam club besides Hanoi T&T being disqualified for the AFC Champions League 2015’s final rounds, after losing to China’s Shandong Luneng on Tuesday.

1
The host team performed quite well at Go Dau Stadium in the first half against Shandong Luneng, champion of both the 2014 Chinese FA Cup and the 2015 Chinese FA Super Cup.
Good coordination among Becamex players blocked all attacks by Shandong Luneng while Moses, Oseni and Abass of the host team pressed on Shandong’s goalkeeper Wang Dalei.
In the first half, Shandong Luneng had only one dangerous shot in the 37th minute. But this free kick by Zheng Zheng was successfully blocked by goalkeeper Thien Esele.
Shangdong Luneng then took the lead with a close target shot by Wang Yongpo in the 46th minute.
Becamex Binh Duong leveled the score only a minute later after Oseni got a pass from Cong Vinh to defeat Wang Dalei.
Becamex Binh Duong continued to press on Shandong Luneng’s goal and the host team took the lead in the 57th minute with a header by Moses.
Shandong Luneng again leveled the score only five minutes later with a goal by Yang Xu.
Yang Xu, who was sent to the field in the second half, then scored the second goal with a header in the 83rd minute, securing a 3-2 win for Shandong Luneng in Group E.
Earlier on February 17, Hanoi T&T was crushed by Seoul FC 7-0 in a Group H match in Seoul, where Vietnamese players struggled in the 3 degree Celsius cold.
The AFC Champions League is an annual continental club football tournament organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). This year’s event sees the competition of 32 teams, divided into eight groups.

Each group will compete under the round robin format, and the first two teams of each group will progress.

The group stage will last until May 6 to select 16 teams to compete in the knockout phase from May 19 to November 21.

Suarez scores brace as Barcelona down Manchester City

Luis Suarez returned to haunt Manchester City by scoring twice as Barcelona took control of their Champions League last 16 tie with a 2-1 away win on Tuesday (Feb 24).

mancity

Suarez was a thorn in City’s side last season, scoring 31 goals as Liverpool pushed Manuel Pellegrini’s team all the way in the title race, and his first-half brace set Barcelona on the way to a repeat of their 4-1 aggregate win over the same opponents from this time last year.

But Sergio Aguero struck in the 69th minute to give City something to build on in the second leg on March 18 and they were spared a heavier defeat in stoppage time when Lionel Messi won a penalty following a foul by Pablo Zabaleta, only for Joe Hart to save his spot-kick and for him to head the rebound wide.

Another echo of last year’s tie means that City will travel to Camp Nou without left-back Gael Clichy, however, after he followed Martin Demichelis and Zabaleta’s example from 2014 by getting sent off for two bookable offences.

“We played two different games in the first half and the second half,” said City manager Pellegrini. “We conceded an early goal and played very bad. In the second half we did what we talked about before the game. We have a chance. We must try to do it there in the next game.”

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique said: “I think it’s a deserved victory and we need to be proud of victories like that. This type of tie is very difficult. It could have been 2-2.”

Pellegrini had opted for a cautious approach when the teams first met a year ago, fielding Alvaro Negredo as a lone striker and packing the midfield, but he changed tack dramatically for the reunion by using Edin Dzeko up front alongside Aguero in an adventurous 4-4-2 formation.

It was a gameplan that unravelled at dizzying speed, as the decision to deploy Fernando as a sole holding midfielder in the absence of the suspended Yaya Toure gave Barcelona acres of space to flood into.

Vincent Kompany volleyed a lofted pass from Messi narrowly wide of his own goal, Demichelis blocked from Messi and Suarez hit the side-netting before Barcelona broke through in the 16th minute.

Messi’s right-wing cross struck Kompany on the back as he covered Suarez’s run towards the near post and the former Liverpool talisman pounced to lash a left-foot shot across Hart and in.

SILVA TEES UP AGUERO

In response, Dzeko headed wide from Clichy’s cross, but Barcelona were already in control, with Messi nonchalantly nutmegging David Silva inside his own half shortly before Suarez hared onto Neymar’s pass and forced Hart to make a sprawling save.

The second goal arrived on the half hour and had Messi at its root, the Argentine jinking past three players and finding Jordi Alba, whose low cross was gleefully touched home by the sliding Suarez.

Neymar saw a lob hacked off the line by Kompany, Hart saved bravely from Messi and Dani Alves hit the bar with a mishit cross, before Samir Nasri finally drew a save from visiting goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen on the stroke of half-time.

Ter Stegen had rather more to do in the opening stages of the second half, but City could not convert the initial opportunities they made.

Dzeko squandered two headed chances — putting one wide and sending another straight at Ter Stegen from six yards out — while the German also caught a header from Demichelis and saw Aguero fire a shot just wide.

Clichy’s first booking arrived in the 59th minute when he tripped Ivan Rakitic, shortly before City introduced Fernandinho for Nasri and Champions League debutant Wilfried Bony in place of Dzeko.

With 21 minutes remaining, Aguero gave City a lifeline, gathering a neat back-heel from Silva and ghosting past Gerard Pique before slamming home.

Clichy’s second booking, for a clumsy kick at Alves, dampened the mood, but Messi’s penalty mishap gave the home fans inside the Etihad Stadium late encouragement.

Tevez, Morata strike as Juventus battle past Dortmund

Carlos Tevez and Alvaro Morata struck for Juventus as the Italian champions secured a 2-1 Champions League last 16 first leg win over Borussia Dortmund in Turin on Tuesday (Feb 24).

juventus-2

However, Massimiliano Allegri’s hosts were left lamenting a host of missed chances and conceding an away goal that could prove costly heading towards the decisive second leg on Mar 18.

Juventus coach Allegri had warned of the threat of Dortmund’s potent counter-attack, but it was from such a move that Tevez broke the deadlock on 13 minutes.

The ball was fed out to Morata, who controlled well before launching a run down the left flank and firing in a shot which ‘keeper Roman Weidenfeller pushed into the path of Tevez for the Argentinian to bundle over from a yard out.

Juventus looked to be in their stride but the hosts’ joy was ended minutes later following a howler by Giorgio Chiellini. The central defender slipped on the edge of the area, missed the ball completely and clattered into Leonardo Bonucci.

Marco Reus waltzed in to collect and had enough time to pick his spot against a rooted Gianluigi Buffon before levelling on 18 minutes. Juventus tried to hit back, Tevez cutting back for Morata at the byeline only for the Spaniard’s header to spin wide of Weidenfeller’s upright.

But the reality of Dortmund’s away-goal leveller appeared to take hold. Juve looked out of sorts for long spells in the opening half as Borussia moved the ball around with ease, albeit without capitalising.

On 33 minutes midfielder Nuri Sahin had time to unleash a long-range effort that swerved late before Buffon parried with both hands. Pogba looked far from his sparkling best and to make matters worse, Juve lost influential midfielder Andrea Pirlo on 37 minutes after he pulled up with a suspected hamstring strain.

Yet Juve took the lead against the run of play just before the interval. Tevez collected a long ball from his own half and set up Pogba on the left for the Frenchman to deliver a low cross which Morata glanced inside Weidenfeller’s far post with the inside of his boot.

Juve resumed in positive fashion but spurned several clear chances to put the result beyond doubt. Bonucci narrowly failed to make contact with a corner swung in from the left after it bounced off Weidenfeller, while at the other end former Torino striker Ciro Immobile saw his angled drive held by Buffon as the visitors enjoyed possession.

Juve spurned a great chance just before the hour when Dortmund skipper Mats Hummels lost possession to Tevez in midfield but Pogba wasted the opportunity in the area after collecting Morata’s long ball from the right.

A probing cross by Stephan Lichsteiner was then headed on by Morata into path of Tevez, who ballooned over from 10 yards out. The Argentinian edged closer when he fired a low drive amid a rabble of players on the edge of the area which crept inches wide of the upright.

Dortmund saw a rare chance go amiss when Immobile fired a yard over Buffon’s crossbar from 20 metres. He was replaced moments later by Jakub Blaszczykowski, prompting a tactical switch which saw Aubameyang move into the striker’s role.

But Juve continued to dominate. Tevez was sent through on the right to force Weidenfeller into action and from the corner Chiellini was allowed to rise above Aubameyang to fire a powerful header just over.

Five minutes from full time Roberto Pereyra, who had replaced Pirlo, missed a great chance when he was sent through by Tevez only for his angled low drive to sneaked just past the far post.

Napoli close on Roma, Icardi ties Tevez after Inter win

Second-half goals by Duvan Zapata and Marek Hamsik guided Napoli to a 2-0 win over Sassuolo and saw them close to within three points of Roma in Serie A on Monday (Feb 23).

MILAN: Second-half goals by Duvan Zapata and Marek Hamsik guided Napoli to a 2-0 win over Sassuolo and saw them close to within three points of Roma in Serie A on Monday (Feb 23).

The later match saw Inter Milan’s revival under Roberto Mancini continue as they recorded their third successive win with a 2-1 victory at relegation-threatened Cagliari.

Napoli – who are just three points in arrears of Roma who have drawn six of their last seven games – managed to hold on despite Belgian midfielder Dries Mertens being sent off only six minutes after coming on as a substitute for a tackle from behind on Simone Missiroli.

For Napoli it was their fifth win in six matches and while the 12 point gap to leaders and defending champions Juventus might appear insurmountable the gap with Roma for the second automatic Champions League spot – a goal of coach Rafael Benitez’ – is certainly within reach.

They could take a significant step towards that goal next week when an ailing Roma host Juventus at the Stadio Olimpico. With Argentinian striker Gonzalo Higuain sitting out a suspension, Zapata was handed the job of leading Napoli’s attack and didn’t wilt under the pressure.

Just after the hour the powerful Colombian striker sprung the offside trap on a Hamsik through-ball and although his shot was charged down, he got back up after stumbling to fire the rebound past Andrea Consigli.

Slovakian star Hamsik doubled Napoli’s lead nine minutes later with a smartly taken curling effort from inside the area after Zapata had returned the favour by laying the ball back to him. Napoli held on for victory, despite Mertens’ red card, which Benitez attributed to their “winning mentality”.

“It wasn’t an easy game at all because Sassuolo played well, but once again we showed we have the right mentality,” Benitez told Sky Sport before praising the input of Zapata. “It’s not easy to leave him on the bench but he just has to keep doing what he did today: score goals and create scoring opportunities.”

Although Napoli overcame Higuain’s absence, the Argentinian’s suspension could hit his bid to claim the Serie A top scorer’s award.

Until Inter’s patchy win at Cagliari, Carlos Tevez had been leading the race on 14 goals but he has been joined by fellow Argentinian Mauro Icardi.

After a balanced opening half, Mateo Kovacic got Inter off the mark when he fired a loose ball past Zeljko Brkic after Icardi lost control of Lukas Podolski’s cross. Cagliari should have taken advantage of some disastrous Inter defending to get back on terms.

Andrea Cossu failed to capitalise on a howler from Nemanja Vidic to fire over, and Paul-Jose M’Poku’s attempt to nutmeg Juan Pablo Carrizo saw the ball get stuck between the ‘keeper’s legs. However, it was the visitors who showed their hosts how to convert chances as they doubled their lead.

Icardi’s 14th goal of the campaign was a fine individual effort. The Argentinian ran on to a through ball on the right before stopping and sending a curling shot with his left foot into Brkic’s top right-hand corner.

Cagliari’s second-half substitute Samuele Longon helped reduce the arrears on 74 minutes when his shot smacked off the post and went in of the back of Carrizo. But Mancini’s men held on for a win which moved them up to eighth, albeit 22 points behind Juventus.

“We came here to play for the three points and achieved our goal,” Icardi told Sky Sport. “We’ve changed the way we play under Mancini and we’re doing well. It wasn’t easy at the start, but we’re getting more used to it now.”

Football bridges cultural divide

It’s 7.30pm and darkness settles over the Red River Pitch on Au Co Street in the capital city. The outside temperature is below 15 degrees Celcius, but despite the cold, foreign and Vietnamese women take off their winter clothes to sport their team’s colours.

20150220165049-1

This is a normal scene for Thursday nights as members of Hot Chi – a Hanoi women’s football team – join together to practice their favourite sport.

The Hot Chi team was established in July by a group of expats desperate to find a way to play football in Hanoi.

At first, a women’s gaelic team, a derivation of traditional Irish ball games, was formed on Facebook. It turned out that the gaelic team’s posts actually attracted a lot of users expressing a desire to play regular football, and so began the formation of a new team.

With a touch of humour and some Vietnamese flavour, the team was named Hot Chi. ‘Chi’ means ‘woman’ in Vietnamese and ‘hot’ is a colloquial way of saying ‘attractive’ in English.

Eight to ten players joined the team at first. After five months, it now has 60 members on its Facebook group, 12-15 of whom regularly participate in training.

Co-founder Carolina Garcia Huerta said that the idea of establishing the club came from a personal need to play football with other ladies. However, she said “it became more of a mission to start a movement”.

“It was quite difficult to believe that the national women’s team has been in amongst the top ten teams in Asian games for so long. They do better than the national men’s team and yet there’s nowhere in the city for ladies to play. We want to give Vietnamese ladies a safe and comfortable space with the equipment to enjoy football,” Carolina said.

After the first two weeks, the female team welcomed two coaches from Vietnam Passion Football Academy, Hayden Wood and Nguyen Huy Toan. Under their instruction, the skills of club members significantly improved.

Kindergarten teacher, Zoe Ford from England, was originally a member of the gaelic club but decided to join the Hot Chi team after meeting Carolina and being persuaded.

“I’ve been in gym a few times and I did a lot of swimming but I’ve never done a team sport. Now I am a part of something else,” she said.

She found it hard in the beginning, but after several training sessions she got better and gained more confidence with the ball.

“The coaches are really good. They don’t tell you this is wrong, they just suggest I should try it another way,” Ford says.

She remembers at first injuring her toes whenever she kicked the ball. Coach Toan corrected her and told her to use the instep to kick.

“If he didn’t tell me that, I would still be doing it wrong,” she said, adding that the coaches also keep things interesting, “by changing the exercises every week”.

After coaching them for several months, Toan said that the players have proven to be very hard working and fast learners. He said that only after a few training sessions they had already improved.

“I didn’t think that they could improve so fast like this,” Toan said.

“The most surprising thing to me is that the atmosphere at the club practice is a different from in Vietnamese ones. In Vietnam, the atmosphere is normally stressful, but members of the Hot Chi club have fun at training while remaining focused.”

Ines Vazquez from Spain, one of the founders of the team, played football in high school and university, and joined to meet people and get used to a new city.

“I feel much better than I did before. I think doing any sport, especially football, relaxes me. After training sessions, I sleep very well,” she said.

Do Thi Hanh, from the northern province of Hai Duong, is excited to be able to play on a women’s football team. She said that most of the team members are foreigners from all over the world and are very open and friendly.

Wood, who has plenty of coaching experience from England and Vietnam, said the team is passionate about learning and making the environment fun.

“We really enjoy coaching them, so we’ve worked a lot to build a strong football community,” he said.

“We are trying to reach as many expats and Vietnamese as possible. It is nice to get Vietnamese people who have never played football before, or have never had a chance to play football before.”

Binh Duong not ‘afraid’: coach

Viet Nam’s defending champions Becamex Binh Duong will kick off the Asian Football Confederation Champions League with a match against Chinese rival Shandong Luneng Taishan FC in Group E today.

The match will be played on Binh Duong’s home turf. The hosts returned to practise on Saturday after a short Lunar New Year break and are ready for a tough match against their rivals. They want to win during the first match itself as it is believed to bring them luck the whole year round.

Cao Van Chong, the general director of the Binh Duong Sport Football Joinstock Company, gifted lucky money to all players and wished them well for the first match.

“After watching them during training, as well as reviewing their statistics, I discovered that Shangdong Luneng are powerful. Their players have a good physique, are in top form, and possess great technique. All of them are better than our players” said coach Nguyen Thanh Son of Binh Duong during a pre-match meeting yesterday.

“However, we are not afraid of them. We will use counter-attack tactics and play with a comfortable spirit and give it our best.”

Coach Alexi Stival of Shangdong Luneng said it will be a difficult match for both sides because they know nothing about each other and many unpredictable things could happen during the game.

He pointed out that Binh Duong are a good team that includes several Vietnamese national team players, as well as foreigners from Senegal and Uganda.

However, Shangdong Luneng want to go home with all three points, because they are still the strongest rivals in the group, he added.

Brazilian coach who is called Cuca refused to reveal the number of national team members and players from China, Brazil and Argentina in his club.

Coach Son of the Vietnamese side said that as per his knowledge, Shangdong Luneng have at least seven national team players from China. They are defenders Dai Lin, Zheng Zheng, Wang Qiang, midfielders Zhang Wenzhao, Wang Yongpo, Liu Binbin and Jin Jingdao and captain striker Han Peng. All of them have arrived in Binh Duong for this match.

There are also two foreigners in the team: Diego Tardelli from Brazil and Argentinean Walter Montillo, who the Vietnamese defenders should keep an eye on all the time, Son added.

During this match, Binh Duong will not have halfback Truong Dinh Luat and defender Nguyen Xuan Thanh playing for them because of injuries. But Son said the remaining members could surprise with their performance.

“It is not true that the stronger team always beats the weaker one. It is the beautiful unpredictability of football that lures people to the stadiums. During a nice and lucky day, the weaker team can definitely trounce the stronger team,” said technical director Le Thuy Hai, from the Binh Duong side.

“But first of all, we have to prepare well and play with all of our capacity and never give up.”

Binh Duong are returning to continental competition after seven years. This is their second League participation.

Shangdong Luneng are the China’s Super Cup holders, as well as National Cup winners. This is the seventh time they are taking part in the AFC Champions League. They had entered the quarter final round once in 2005.

Another eagerly awaited match in the group is between Jeonbuk Huyndai Motors of South Korea and Kashiwa Reysol from Japan.
