As many as 8,000 balls were presented to orphans, poor ethnic minority children, street kids, and those with disabilities at the February 6 launching ceremony.

The donation is part of a three-year cooperation framework between Chevrolet and the One World Play Project organisation to give 1.5 million balls to students in war-affected regions, refugee camps, and disaster-hit areas in the world.

Head of the Football for All Vietnam (FFAV) project Anders Krystad said the assistance creates a playground for over 162,000 children in Thua Thien-Hue province and support the expansion of the community football model to 15-20 cities and provinces across the country.

This aims to benefit kids aged between 6-15, especially orphans, street or ethnic minority children, he added.

The “One World Futbol” never needs a pump and never goes flat. The ball can withstand the toughest environments and last for long without maintenance.

Hoang Anh Gia Lai players receive nominations

Six players of V-League 1 side Hoang Anh Gia Lai have been nominated as the Best Young Players of 2014.

All of them are former members of the national U19 team, a football phenomenon in Viet Nam.

Of the five other nominees, one each came from the Viettel, Song Lam Nghe An, and Thanh Hoa and two came from SHB Da Nang.

Nguyen Tan Anh, an official of Hoang Anh Gia Lai Football Club, said it was an honour for the team, in general, and the players, in particular.

He hoped that these players would see further progress and become candidates for the Gold Ball title in the future.

Among the six players of Hoang Anh Gia Lai are Nguyen Cong Phuong and Nguyen Tuan Anh.

Hoang Anh Gia Lai boss Doan Nguyen Duc has refused to sell these players to Japanese club Mito Hollyhock, who appealed to the club’s head official on January 24 in Pleiku City.

“They officially wanted not only Phuong and Tuan Anh but also other players. But I refused. I said only when they had collected enough experience to compete at the elite football level would I think about selling them. There is no hurry now,” Duc remarked.

Vietnam clubs believe pop stars can rouse footballers

Many football (soccer) clubs in Vietnam have looked to pop stars as a source of inspiration for both their players and supporters.

The latest team to join the trend are Dong Thap FC, a club headquartered in the namesake province in the Mekong Delta.

The club announced on their official Facebook page on Wednesday that Vietnamese pop singer Bao Thy will perform at their Cao Lanh Stadium on Saturday, when Dong Thap FC challenge Sanna Khanh Hoa in the 2015 Toyota V-League 1, which is the country’s top-flight competition.

This will be the second consecutive match in which Dong Thap FC supporters have been given a chance to enjoy a live performance by a pop star, after half-Korean singer and actress Hari Won rocked the arena on Saturday last week.

Hari, born to a South Korean mother and a Vietnamese father, sang two songs and inspired the hosts to beat QNK Quang Nam 3-0, which was apparent encouragement for Dong Thap FC to go on to invite Bao Thy for their next game.

Thy, who has created many catchy dance songs, will sing three to four songs before the game, Lam Trung Hieu, a media person with Dong Thap FC, told Tuoi Tre News.

Dong Thap FC jumped from 12th to 9th place in the standings, which include 14 clubs, after remaining unbeaten in the last three games.

Their decision to bring V-pop stars to their stadium was a surprise, as the club are not known to be wealthy.

But Pham Huu Phuoc, a Dong Thap FC representative, said it is “profitable business.”

Dong Thap FC paid VND30 million (US$1,398) for Hari Won’s performance, and raked in VND80 million ($3,728) from ticket sales, Dat Viet (Vietnam Land) newspaper quoted Phuoc as saying.

“The VND50 million [$2,330] profit seems small, but with 13 home matches for the whole season, it is a considerable gain – VND650 million [$30,292],” he said.

Phuoc added that 11,000 tickets were sold for last week’s match, up to 2,000 more than the usual figure.

“Bringing these singers to Cao Lanh Stadium, we want to cheer on the home players and at the same time provide a ‘mental dish’ for their supporters,” Hieu, the media person, explained to Tuoi Tre News.

Many other league clubs have also invited V-pop stars to perform to lure more supporters to the stands.

On January 4, Becamex Binh Duong had famous pop stars Noo Phuoc Thinh and Dong Nhi, and girl band Mat Ngoc, treat fans to vibrant music before their 2015 Toyota V-League 1 opener with Dong Thap FC.

Last year, Than Quang Ninh also invited pop star Luu Huong Giang, one of the judges of “The Voice Kids of Vietnam,” to rock the stadium before they faced SHB Da Nang in the same league.

Saigon Xuan Thanh, a Ho Chi Minh City-based club that dissolved in August 2013, was arguably the pioneer in bringing Vietnamese showbiz closer to a football league.

The club appointed star singer Ngoc Son as their ambassador, and the singer managed to invite many of his famous colleagues to perform at Thong Nhat Stadium for their home games.

The Vietnamese league plus V-pop trend seems to work as clubs usually win most of the games that are inspired by the singers.

Melquiades launched a dangerous tackle on Phung Van Nhien of Hai Phong that broke his collarbone.

Nhien will be sidelined for a month.

The Spanish Melquiades received a red card for the challenge that would usually carry a two match ban, but the Viet Nam Football Federation said his violation warranted stronger punishment.

Melquiades could return to action in round 10 on April 19.

Hung overcomes horrific injury

It seemed that defender Nguyen Anh Hung would have to say goodbye to his football career following an horrific injury.

However, the 23-year-old player fought back, and is now shining for LG Hai Phong in this year’s Toyota V-League 1.

“Hung is small, but he has a fierce desire. He always puts his whole heart into the game,” said Hai Phong coach Truong Viet Hoang.

Hoang said that Hung has been outstanding this year, and helped Hai Phong to form a solid back line in the country’s top league. With four wins, one draw and one loss, the team are ranked third out of 14 teams.

Nghe An-born Hung helped An Giang to a third place finish in the National First Division Football Championships in 2013.

He played 13 out of 14 matches that year, and his team was promoted to the V-League.

However, Hung was seriously injured during a match against V-League 1 side Song Lam Nghe An (SLNA) on February 26 last year.

SLNA’s Tran Dinh Dong landed a sickening tackle on Hung that broke his leg. Dong received the toughest penalty in the history of the league, with a record 28-game suspension and a VND20 million ($950) fine from the country’s football federation.

“Before the match, I was feeling nervous, and then I broke my leg. I still can’t forget that moment. I nearly passed out on the pitch,” Hung recalled.

Hung felt desperate when doctors told him to retire from the sport, but he used that to overcome adversity and play again.

After a period of treatment at Nghe An Hospital, he drove to Ha Noi by himself to continue his recovery at the Viet Nam Sports Hospital. Come rain or shine, Hung attended physiotherapy twice a day, and to make the most of his training, he rented a room near the hospital.

Within seven months he had made a miraculous recovery, thanks to his hard work and love for the game.

“I completed my recovery last September, but I wasn’t sure I’d have a club to play for. An Giang paid me during my treatment, so I wanted to go back and repay them on the field when I was fit again. However, An Giang were relegated to the first division last year, and the team was dissolved. I had no offers from other teams either, so I returned home to live with my mother,” said Hung.

“Then I got a glimmer of hope last October. I received a phone call from Hai Phong chairman Tran Manh Hung, who invited me to trial for his club.

“I couldn’t believe it. He said the club wanted to sign me, so I continued my training until I made a complete recovery,” he said.

The chairman knew about the defender through the national U21 football championships that took place in Hai Phong in 2012, when Hung was captain of SLNA’s U21s.

“He saved my life,” said Hung.

The northern port city team signed a two-year contract with Hung, completing his comeback from injury.

“Thanks to the chairman, my dream of playing football again has come true,” said the youngster.

Schurrle wanted Chelsea stay

Andre Schurrle has revealed he wanted to stay at Chelsea but is relishing playing first-team football at Wolfsburg.

w638_h359_at__9699393

The Germany international signed for a club-record fee of 24.6million on deadline day after struggling to make an impact this season under Jose Mourinho.
Schurrle said he was originally not looking to leave Chelsea but started considering an exit toward the end of the transfer window due to a lack of first-team football
He said: “I wanted to stay but the last weeks or last month I tended towards changing something because I wanted to do what is fun for me and that is to play football. I could only do it briefly at Chelsea in the past weeks.
Despite helping Germany win the World Cup last year, Schurrle struggled for form and fitness with Mourinho opting to play Oscar, Eden Hazard and Willian just behind central striker Diego Costa.
The attacking midfielder still managed to score 14 goals in a Chelsea shirt and he has no regrets about moving there from Bayer Leverkusen for 18m in 2013.
I think I had a good time with Chelsea, he said.
My first season was very good, then there was the World Cup. I was a starter at the beginning of the season until an illness moved me behind. But the team continued to win so yes I am still confident and know what I can do.
“I am not here in Wolfsburg to sneak over the pitch seeking my form. I am highly motivated and will try everything I can to help the team immediately.
Schurrle’s exit from Stamford Bridge paved the way for Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado to join Chelsea and both deals couldnt be completed until the final day of the transfer window.
The last days were very stressful to me, he said.
I was on the mobile phone all the time, waiting and hoping for a call or a message saying its a done deal. And that I can return to Germany and go to Wolfsburg.
“Although the whole process took some time, I was sure that someday it would be successful in the end. Now I am sitting here and I am happy to be part of this team.

Rodriguez fractures metatarsal

Real Madrid forward James Rodriguez is facing a spell on the sidelines after breaking a metatarsal during Wednesday night’s 2-1 win over Sevilla.

w638_h359_at__9700064

Madrid opened up a four-point gap at the top of La Liga with the win, but it came at a price as Rodriguez – who opened the scoring with a diving header after 12 minutes – and Sergio Ramos both went off injured.
Madrid later confirmed a broken bone for the Colombian, who could be out for around two months.
A statement on the club’s website said: “After the tests carried out on James Rodriguez by the Real Madrid medical services at the Sanitas La Moraleja Hospital, he has been diagnosed with a fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his right foot. The player will undergo surgery in the coming hours.”
Ramos had been substituted after nine minutes with a hamstring problem, but it is unclear how long the defender may be sidelined.
“Sergio had a hamstring problem,” manager Carlo Ancelotti said on the club website. “We cannot evaluate it yet. We must wait a few days.”
Rodriguez’s replacement in the match, namesake Jesse Rodriguez, had doubled Madrid’s lead before Sevilla – who themselves lost goalkeeper Beto to injury – replied late on through Iago Aspas.

1. Binh Duong regain top spot, Hai Phong suffer first loss

The 3-1 victory over XSKT Can Tho helped Becamex Binh Duong regain the top position which had been lost to LG Hai Phong and Quang Ninh Coal in the previous rounds. Meanwhile, Hai Phong had to concede their first loss of the 2015 season against SHB Da Nang who escaped bottom place with their home-turf win.

2. Stars make impressive comebacks

The sixth round saw impressive comebacks to the main lineups of several stars. Vu Minh Tuan scored a decisive goal in Quang Ninh Coal’s 2-1 win over Hoang Anh Gia Lai, while the season’s most expensive contract, Le Cong Vinh also scored for Binh Duong in his first match in the main lineup.

3. Domestic players shine

13 of the 18 sixth-round goals were scored by domestic players. Notably, three of seven matches witnessed all the goals netted by Vietnamese strikers, and two domestic players, Van Quyet and Hoang Thinh, scored twice.

4. Quang Ninh Coal deserve best guests

Quang Ninh Coal have been considered the best visitors as they won four consecutive away matches in the last six rounds of competition. More proudly, the 2-1 victory against Hoang Anh Gia Lai last weekend pushed them to top position of the 2015 V-League standings for the first time (despite the lead lasting just one day) after 22 years.

5. Storms of red cards

There were five red cards recorded in last weekend’s matches, making Round 6 the round of the most red cards since the beginning of the 2015 season. The red cards were shown to Minh Tung (Quang Ninh Coal), Samson (Hanoi T&T), Ngoc Nguyen and Hoang Vissai (QNK Quang Nam), and Gomez (SHB Da Nang).

Football academy aims for game revival goal

Vietnam football looks set for a revival with the spread of training academies to boost the country’s fortunes in future contests by recruiting and cultivating young players for the professional field.

The model will be the Hoang Anh Gia Lai-Arsenal JMG Academy, in Gia Lai Province, which was built in cooperation with the Arsenal Football Club of the UK, JMG Academy and the Hoang Anh Gia Lai Corp.

20150203133415-2

Fan numbers have been fading in recent years due to match-fixing scandals and losses in international contests.

To regenerate the sport, the HAGL-Arsenal JMG Academy has nurtured such promising young players as Cong Phuong and Tuan Anh.

Following this success, the Viettel Group built a 20ha sport centre and started recruiting promising players from across the country. Viettel has contracts with eight satellite training centres to recruit children aged from ten to 12, with outstanding candidates feeding into the main centre at the age of 13.

Major-General Hoang Xuan Vinh, deputy director of the Viettel Group, said the company was working with Germany’s Borussia Dortmund to set up an academy in Hanoi.

“Dortmund has an excellent training model. Moreover, their playing style is also in synch with what we’re aiming for,” Vinh said.

But the academy path is not a certain one.

In HCM City, once home to a number of leading football clubs, such as Hai Quan and Cang Sai Gon, the football boom has gone into decline. It tried a training academy, set up by the HCM City Football Federation, Scavi Co. and French footballer Dominique Rocheteau — the Scavi-Rocheteau Football Training Centre — but the centre closed after five years.

On January 31, Hoang Anh Gia Lai Corporation, Arsenal FC and NutiFood JSC joined hands to establish a new football academy in HCM City.

Tran Thanh Hai, chairman of NutiFood JSC (left), Doan Nguyen Duc, chairman of Hoang Anh Gia Lai Corp (centre), and Jean Marc Guillou, founder of JMG Academy model joined hands to establish a new football academy in HCM City.

“Hoang Anh Gia Lai-Arsenal JMG Academy has produced many outstanding players,” said Tran Thanh Hai, chairman of NutiFood JSC.

“NutiFood wants to be another partner to continue this success, producing more skilled players and contributing to Vietnam’s football scene.”

Doan Nguyen Duc, chairman of Hoang Anh Gia Lai Corp., said, “One Hoang Anh Gia Lai-Arsenal JMG Academy isn’t enough to attract all the talented players in Vietnam, and we welcome NutiFood’s help.”

The new academy will begin recruiting in June.
