Costa rescues Bayern against Darmstadt

Douglas Costa’s long-range strike rescued Bayern Munich in their 1-0 victory at bottom side Darmstadt on Sunday (Dec 18) to reinstate his side as Bundesliga leaders before their showdown with RB Leipzig.

Bayern host second-placed Leipzig at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday in a mouth-watering clash. Both teams are on 36 points, but the Bavarians lead on goal difference.

Costa’s ferocious dipping shot from 30 metres out on 71 minutes was the bright highlight of a lacklustre Bayern display as Darmstadt battled their illustrious opponents, running seven kilometres more as a team.

Carlo Ancelotti’s Bayern had been temporarily usurped from top spot in Germany for 24 hours by Leipzig’s impressive 2-0 win at home to Hertha Berlin on Saturday.

However, this was a below-par display from Bayern, especially in the first half, against a limited Darmstadt team who suffered their seventh straight league defeat.

“We are relieved, they were three important points, it would have been hard to have played Leipzig without them,” said Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. “But the way we played – that wasn’t FC Bayern.”

With Jerome Boateng already out after needing a shoulder operation, Bayern’s captain Philipp Lahm withdrew just before kick-off after pulling a thigh muscle in the warm-up and was replaced at right-back by Rafinha.

With an eye on Leipzig, Ancelotti rotated with both Germany midfielder Joshua Kimmich and Franck Ribery starting on the bench.

The Italian coach had demanded a performance with “maximum intensity”, but Bayern did exactly the opposite, failing to create a clear chance in the opening 25 minutes at the Boellenfalltor stadium.

Bayern lacked a creative spark and Costa made little inroads into the Darmstadt defence, until his thunderbolt of a shot settled the result.

“We didn’t play well, we weren’t fast enough, but it was important for us to win and to stay top,” said Ancelotti. “We must play better, quickly and give our best on Wednesday.”

Bayern’s hot-shot striker Robert Lewandowski was harassed by Darmstadt defenders whenever he got the ball.

Ancelotti resorted to his prefered 4-3-3 formation, even though some of Munich’s biggest wins this season have been achieved with a 4-2-3-1 line-up.

Darmstadt’s caretaker coach Ramon Berndroth admitted he “idolised Ancelotti as a youngster”, but his side showed little respect, created a few half chances and never allowed Munich’s stars time on the ball.

Franck Ribery came on for the ineffective Arturo Vidal for the final 20 minutes just before Costa’s superb winner.

Thomas Mueller pulled defenders away from the middle and with a clear view of goal, Costa unleashed a fierce shot from well outside the area which dipped inside the top left-hand corner.

Darmstadt’s best chance came when midfielder Peter Niemeyer headed straight at Neuer from a free-kick on 77 minutes.

Bayern defender Mats Hummels admitted his side must improve before the Leipzig showdown.

“The respect is huge and it’s going to be a demanding test. We will have to put in a top performance, a standard one isn’t going to be good enough against a team like that,” said the centre-back.

Later, Ingolstadt, who beat RB Leipzig 1-0 last weekend, pulled off another shock win with a 2-1 victory at 10-man Bayer Leverkusen.

US midfielder Alfredo Morales gave Ingolstadt the lead at the BayArena before Leverkusen’s Chile hardman Charles Aranguiz was sent off just after the break for his second booking.

Swiss striker Admir Mehmedi equaliser after burying Julian Brandt’s superb pass, but Israel midfielder Almog Cohen netted Ingolstadt’s winner on 73 minutes.

The result pulls Ingolstadt up to 16th, still in the bottom three, while Leverkusen are ninth.

‘FIFA are not world doping police’, says Infantino

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has ruled out taking the 2018 World Cup from Russia in the wake of the latest findings of the McLaren report.

fifa_president

“FIFA is not the world police and certainly not the world doping police,” the head of world football’s governing body told German magazine Der Spiegel.

“Our disciplinary bodies will take care of anything in the McLaren report which has anything to do with football. Boycotts and bans have never solved any problems,” Infantino added as he ruled out stripping Russia of the 2018 World Cup finals.

The McLaren report, the second part of which was announced ten days ago, revealed systematic doping in Russia between 2011 and 2015 which involved more than 1,000 athletes in several sports, including football.

Infantino says FIFA are still waiting for the ‘relevant information’ from the McLaren reports which mentions 31 tampered doping samples from footballers.

The Swiss says “if measures need to be taken, they will be”, but he pointed to the work FIFA is already doing to combat doping. “Testing was not implemented by Brazil in 2014 or by South Africa in 2010 and won’t be carried out by Russia in 2018, but by FIFA,” he added.

If something goes wrong, “that will be our responsibility, our fault,” said Infantino, “but we are confident our anti-doping measures will work.”

When asked about the recent ‘Football Leaks’, reported by several publications including Der Spiegel, which alleged tax evasion by high-profile stars including Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho, Infantino said it’s a matter for individual national federations.

“It is naive to believe that FIFA can know everything from Zurich which goes on during every transfer in the world,” said Infantino. “So it makes sense to give the responsibility to the unions and federations. They should check the transfers, which take place in their own country.”

He added “when someone hasn’t paid their taxes, drives too fast or is drunk behind the wheel, then FIFA is not responsible for that.”

Infantino also said FIFA will lead a meeting of football representative bodies early next year to discuss transfers in the wake of last week’s Football Leaks revelations.

“We need to start a huge job of reflection including all parties: players, clubs, intermediaries, but also the authorities, notably the European Commission,” Infantino said in the same interview to a a group of European media, including France’s Mediapart.

“With that in mind we have, at FIFA, put in place a committee to gather all those interested parties. They will meet for the first time at the beginning of next year.”

Last week Mediapart published a report alleging that Doyen Sports, a major transfer market dealer, had ploughed funds into prostitution, kickbacks and tax evasion schemes.

“I generally believe that the majority of people, and therefore also those involved in the transfer system, are honest,” added Infantino.

“In any case, I hope that’s the case. That being said, it’s not a reason not to try, incessantly, to increase and improve the control mechanisms we have in place. But we are not an authority charged with enforcing the law … Although we must do more.”

The Football Leaks report claimed that Doyen Sports had attempted to facilitate the transfer of Frenchman Geoffrey Kondogbia to Real Madrid by offering prostitutes.

The report also accused the Kazakh-Turkish owned company of transferring at least €10.8 million (US$12 million), earnt through kickbacks, into tax havens.

Mane strikes late to give Liverpool derby joy

Sadio Mane’s 94th minute tap-in ensured Jurgen Klopp enjoyed his first visit to Everton with a 1-0 win that saw his Liverpool team move into second in the Premier League on Monday (Dec 19).

A game with an abundance of passion and pride failed to deliver many goalmouth incidents and seemed more likely to be remembered for the failure of referee Mike Dean to send off Everton’s Ross Barkley in the second half.

The midfielder was shown only yellow for a violent stamp that struck Jordan Henderson above his ankle.

But deep in injury time, Daniel Sturridge cut inside and saw his well-aimed shot strike the foot of the right-hand post, rebounding into the six-yard area where Mane reacted first and converted the game’s only goal.

That dramatic goal allowed Liverpool to move to within six points of league leaders Chelsea, with Manchester City a further point back in third. Everton, with just one win in seven, are ninth.

“It’s a wonderful feeling,” purred Klopp to the BBC. “Really, really good. It was a long, long stoppage time. We gave them no chances. We deserved to win.”

His Everton counterpart Ronald Koeman, who was experiencing his first Merseyside derby, disagreed.

“The substitutes of Liverpool had a big impact in the final result,” Koeman told Sky Sports. “We didn’t keep the ball after the break so much. The team didn’t deserve to lose the game.”

However, Koeman conceded Barkley was fortunate to stay on the pitch. “Barkley, maybe he was lucky. Maybe it’s a red,” said Koeman, who in his heyday as a player was renowned for his physicality.

Without a derby win in the last six years, and with just one victory from the last 19 fixtures with Liverpool, Everton had started the game in impressive and aggressive fashion but lost their way after the interval.

After 22 minutes, Barkley – the only native Merseysider on either side – pushed the ball wide to Aaron Lennon whose cross forced Ragnar Klavan into an important interception with Romelu Lukaku poised to connect at the far post.

Then moments later, another Everton attack ended with Leighton Baines setting Barkley away for a 25-yard shot which passed within feet of the post.

EVERTON UNSETTLED

Everton were unsettled at the interval by the loss of the injured midfielder James McCarthy, who made way for veteran Gareth Barry, and Liverpool finally began to make an impression on proceedings.

On 50 minutes, the visitors carved out the best chance of the game with James Milner’s long pass seeing Firmino shrug off Funes Mori and advance clean through only for Stekelenburg to deny him with a brave block.

Lukaku eased the pressure, momentarily, when he headed just over while twisting, off-balance, to meet Barry’s pass but it was only a brief respite as Mane exchanged passes with Firmino on 57 minutes and was denied by the combined efforts of Leighton Baines and Stekelenburg.

That incident proved costly for the Everton goalkeeper who could play on for only another seven minutes before being forced off with a leg injury, handing the gloves to substitute Joel Robles.

Barkley was fortunate only to be shown that yellow card in that 67th-minute incident, which angered Lovren and saw players briefly square up to each other — a flashpoint which also led to a booking for Everton’s Seamus Coleman.

The visitors continued to enjoy the better of the closing stages with Robles making the save of the match, diving quickly to his left to keep out Firmino’s volley on his line before the goal, and Coleman having to clear a Firmino shot off the line in the sixth of eight minutes added on.

Suarez double, Messi magic hands Barca derby delight

Luis Suarez celebrated his bumper new five-year Barcelona deal in style with a double as the champions defeated Espanyol 4-1 in the Catalan derby to move to within three points of La Liga leaders Real Madrid.

suarez_double

However, it was Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi’s skills that stole the show as Barca took advantage of Real’s duties in winning the Club World Cup earlier on Sunday to cut the gap at the top ahead of La Liga’s three-week winter break.

Iniesta teed up Suarez for an early opener before both Iniesta and Messi showed sublime touches for the second eventually finished off by Suarez.

Messi created Barca’s third as well for Jordi Alba before David Lopez pulled a goal back for Espanyol as their 10-game unbeaten run came to an end.

The five-time World Player of the Year wasn’t to be denied, though, as Messi got the goal his performance deserved a minute from time.

“Leo’s move (for the second goal) is a PlayStation move from a unique player that only he can do,” Suarez told Spanish TV Station Movistar.

Barca’s upturn in form in recent weeks has coincided with the return of veteran playmaker Iniesta from a six-week injury layoff and the Spanish international was to the fore as the hosts dominated throughout.

“We’ve enjoyed watching players in their natural habitat doing incredible, unpredictable things and making us enjoy this marvellous sport,” added Barca boss Luis Enrique.

Iniesta sparked a sweeping counter-attack on eight minutes involving all three of Barca’s star-studded frontline as he fed Suarez, who spun away from the Espanyol defence, before picking out Neymar and the Brazilian’s low cross was fired inches wide by Messi.

Barca had to wait just 10 minutes more to open the scoring as another sumptuous Iniesta pass was expertly controlled by Suarez and he bore down on goal before slotting into the far corner.

For all their dominance in possession, the champions had to wait till the start of the second period to enjoy more clear chances as Messi curled wide from the edge of the box before he teed up Suarez with a brilliant defence splitting pass.

This time the Uruguayan was denied by Diego Lopez, but at a cost as the Espanyol ‘keeper injured his knee in clashing with Suarez and had to be replaced by Roberto.

Suarez moved level with Messi as La Liga’s top scorer with 12 with Barca’s second, but once again the credit should go to Iniesta and Messi as they dribbled past a combined seven Espanyol defenders before Messi’s shot was parried by Roberto and Suarez snaffled up the rebound.

Seconds later Messi tore the Espanyol defence apart once more to leave Jordi Alba free to drill the ball into the far corner.

Espanyol did muster a reply to salvage some pride with their first shot on target as Gerard Moreno headed into Lopez’s path, who had stormed forward from centre-back to find the top corner.

However, a virtuoso display from Messi got the finale it deserved as he and Suarez exchanged a one-two before the Argentine prodded between Roberto’s legs.

Reus off as Dortmund hold Hoffenheim

Hoffenhem and Borussia Dortmund fought out an entertaining 2-2 draw on Friday which saw both sides stay on the fringes of the Bundesliga title race.

dortmund_

Hoffenheim, who move third with the point after their fourth draw in five games, now trail Bayern Munich and Leipzig by six points having played a game more with Dortmund two points further adrift.

The draw saw the hosts remain the only unbeaten club in Europe’s top leagues aside from Real Madrid.

Their coach Julian Nagelsmann, the youngest in the Bundesliga’s history, was up against his ex-mentor Dortmund’s Thomas Tuchel and it was Hoffenheim who drew first blood on three minutes when Mark Uth netted.

Mario Goetze levelled in the 11th minute only for Sandro Wagner to put Hoffenheim back in front on 20 minutes– albeit after 27-year-old referee Benjamin Brand found he had not pushed aside Sven Bender to head in.

Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made it 2-2 with his 16th of the season three minutes after the restart after good work by French international Ousmane Dembele.

But Dortmund found their creative thrust somewhat blunted when Dembele had to go off midway through the second period through injury.

Further hampering Dortmund’s cause was a dismissal four minutes before the interval of Marco Reus for a second booking which looked harsh after a tussle with Nadiem Amiri.

Reus kicked the wall in the tunnel as he headed for an early shower.

Aubameyang lightened Dortmund’s mood when he clipped in his 100th goal for the club in 165 appearances.

Surprise package Leipzig on Saturday host fourth-placed Hertha Berlin while Bayern travel to tailenders Darmstadt.

Ronaldo hits 500th goal as Real reach world final

Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 500th club goal on Thursday (Dec 15) as Real Madrid eased past Mexico’s Club America 2-0 to reach the Club World Cup final in Japan.

ronaldo-cristiano_ronaldo

The Spanish giants will face shock finalists Kashima Antlers, the J-League champions, in Yokohama on Sunday as they look to capture their second world title in three years and fifth in total.

“Our sole aim was to reach the final – so it’s job done,” Real coach Zinedine Zidane told reporters after goals from Karim Benzema and Ronaldo extended his side’s club record unbeaten run to 36 matches in all competitions.

“We didn’t have a great rhythm in the first half, but in the second half we created more chances and Cristiano was able to kill the game off so I’m very happy,” added the Frenchman.

“It was a long flight to Japan and we have very few days to rest and prepare for the final, but we have come here to win this Club World Cup.”

His countryman Benzema said: “It was a hard game against a tough team. The conditions were difficult too with the long journey we’ve had, but we played well and won the game – now for the final.”

With Ronaldo firing blanks until scoring with virtually the last kick of the game, Benzema struck in first-half stoppage time, finishing clinically with the outside of his right boot after a deft pass from Toni Kroos.

Ronaldo, who scooped his fourth Ballon d’Or earlier this week, had already squandered a gilt-edged opportunity by heading against the post.

The Portuguese superstar also saw two stinging efforts blocked by goalkeeper Moises Munoz but his dogged persistence paid off when he swept home from a tight angle deep into injury time.

MEXICAN PROTEST

Confusion followed, however, when it appeared the goal could be ruled out using the video technology being trialled by FIFA in Japan.

Ronaldo’s face turned to thunder as the Mexicans protested he had been offside – until Paraguayan referee Enrique Caceres finally indicated that the goal stood.

“It’s a new invention but to be honest I don’t like it,” said man of the match Luka Modric when asked about video replays. “It causes confusion. I hope they don’t continue with this system because for me it is not football.”

Zidane refused to criticise the technology, although his comments hardly amounted to a ringing endorsement either.

“If you ask my personal impression, it could cause problems,” he said. “But if it’s FIFA policy then we have to get used to it. We don’t have the power to decide. Maybe it will help make things clear and transparent.”

The 31-year-old Ronaldo has hit a remarkable 377 goals in 366 games for Real with 118 more in 292 games for Manchester United and five in 31 for Sporting before that.

Club America coach Ricardo La Volpe insisted his side had been unfortunate to lose. “I think the luck was against,” growled the firebrand Argentine.

“Real Madrid were not the better team. I told the players they can be proud of the way they fought,” he added. “It was a very tight game which we dominated for periods, but we were not aggressive enough. We just couldn’t find the final ball.”

The 29-year-old Uruguay striker’s new deal, which had been in the pipeline for some time, features a €200 million (US$208 million) release clause.

Barcelona said Suarez, who has scored 97 goals in 116 appearances since signing from Liverpool in 2014, will officially pen the new deal on Friday.

“They know that I feel happy here and there was never going to be a problem extending my contract,” said Suarez. “And finally, it’s official.”

“It’s more than a gift for Barca, it’s a gift for me. Both the club and I wanted this to continue because it’s a good relationship.”

The former Ajax striker helped Barca win a treble of La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League in his first season at the Camp Nou and followed that up with a domestic double last season.

He scored in the 3-1 win over Juventus in Berlin in the 2015 Champions League final.

Suarez’s remarkable goal tally of 59 goals in 53 matches last season, including 40 in La Liga, saw him win the European Golden Boot award for Europe’s top scorer.

Suarez’s new deal follows the announcement by Barcelona in October that Brazilian superstar Neymar had signed a new five-year deal also keeping him at the club until 2021 and featuring a €250 million buyout clause.

Barca coach Luis Enrique recently expressed confidence that Lionel Messi would tie his future to the club after opening talks to extend his contract beyond 2018.

Various Spanish media sources reported last week that Messi’s father and agent, Jorge Horacio Messi, had arrived in Barcelona to begin negotiations on a new deal for the five-time World Player of the Year.

“Of course (I like the news),” Enrique said. “The day on which it is announced will be a great day for everyone to celebrate.”

Barca have also recently tied down Sergi Busquets and Javier Mascherano to contract extensions this year.

La Liga’s other star atractions have been busily putting pen to paper in recent weeks.

Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo signed a bumper new five-year contract with Real Madrid last month which will keep the Portuguese star at the European champions until he is 36.

Teammates Gareth Bale, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos also agreed lucrative renewals.

Perfect 10 for Chelsea as Liverpool go second

Cesc Fabregas’s goal earned Chelsea a 1-0 victory at Sunderland on Wednesday (Dec 14) – their 10th in succession – as Antonio Conte’s side surged six points clear at the Premier League summit.

Fabregas, who came in for Nemanja Matic, curled in from Willian’s 40th-minute cut-back to establish Chelsea’s longest winning run within the same league campaign since 2005-06.

Today we didn’t pay, but when you have the possibility to kill the game, you must kill the game,” said Chelsea manager Conte.

“I prefer my players not to look at the table and to focus on the next game in three days (at Crystal Palace). We must prepare very well to have a good Christmas.”

There were also wins for Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s 88th-minute strike earned Manchester United a 2-1 win at Crystal Palace.

Chelsea, for whom Eden Hazard missed out due to a knock, have won all 10 league games they gave played since losing 3-0 at Arsenal on Sep 24, keeping eight clean sheets.

But it took a flying save from goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to prevent Patrick van Aanholt snatching a point for bottom club Sunderland at the death.

Conte’s men are six points clear of Liverpool, who stole above Arsenal into second place courtesy of a 3-0 win at Middlesbrough in which Adam Lallana scored twice.

Having seen his side beaten 4-3 at Bournemouth and then held to a 2-2 draw by West Ham United, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp dropped goalkeeper Lorus Karius for Simon Mignolet.

His team went ahead in the 29th minute when Lallana headed in from England team-mate Nathaniel Clyne’s right-wing cross.

Lallana teed up Divock Origi to add a second on the hour and eight minutes later the Belgian returned the favour as Lallana claimed his second goal.

“About a year ago I had sat him in the office and I was happy with him, but he was like, ‘I’m not scoring,'” Klopp said of Lallana. “And I said he wasn’t in the right positions. Tonight he was twice in the right position and it was wonderful.”

Liverpool moved above Arsenal on goal difference, Arsene Wenger’s side having lost 2-1 at Everton on Tuesday.

In further bad news for Arsenal, City, Tottenham and United all closed in on them.

RONDON’S HEADED HAT-TRICK

Pep Guardiola’s City hit back after successive defeats against Chelsea and champions Leicester City by winning 2-0 at home to Watford.

Guardiola, who dropped John Stones and reverted to a back four, saw his side prevail thanks to goals in each half by Pablo Zabaleta and David Silva.

“We won, we had a good performance,” said Guardiola. “All the team worked hard and it is good to get a clean sheet.”

The only black mark for City was a knee injury sustained by Ilkay Gundogan, which Guardiola said was likely to keep the Germany midfielder out for “several months”.

City remain fourth, seven points adrift of Chelsea, but only a point below Liverpool and Arsenal.

Tottenham are three points back in fifth place after Christian Eriksen scored twice in a 3-0 home win over Hull City, with Victor Wanyama also on target.

Having beaten Spurs 1-0 on Sunday, United recorded back-to-back league wins for the first time since August by edging Palace to remain three points below Mauricio Pochettino’s men in sixth place.

Jose Mourinho’s side went ahead in first-half stoppage time at Selhurst Park when Ibrahimovic chested down Juan Mata’s free-kick for Paul Pogba to score from close range.

United were pegged back in the 66th minute when James McArthur beat David de Gea at his near post, but with full-time beckoning Pogba freed Ibrahimovic to dink home his 14th goal of the season.

“It was very difficult, but very deserved,” Mourinho told the BBC. “It was an amazing reaction and I am really pleased for the players.”

West Bromwich Albion climbed to the heady heights of seventh place after a hat-trick of headers by Salomon Rondon gave Tony Pulis’s men a 3-1 home win over third-bottom Swansea City.

The Venezuelan striker became the first player to score a headed Premier League hat-trick since Everton’s Duncan Ferguson in December 1997. Wayne Routledge replied for Swansea.

West Ham pulled clear of the relegation zone after Mark Noble tucked away the rebound from his own penalty to secure a 1-0 home win over Burnley.

Stoke City survived the 22nd-minute dismissal of Marko Arnautovic for a studs-up lunge at Sofiane Boufal to secure a 0-0 draw at home to Southampton.

Indonesia beat Thailand 2-1 in AFF Suzuki Cup 2016 final

With the previous four consecutive victories without conceding any goals, title favourites Thailand proved their strength at the AFF Suzuki Cup 2016 and quickly took a 1-0 lead against the hosts in the final’s first leg at Pakansari Stadium in Bogor, Indonesia on December 14.

Indonesia bất ngờ đánh bại Thái Lan ở trận chung kết lượt đi

A win was in the hands of the Thai players, but the match changed rapidly in the second half, as hosts Indonesia strengthened attacks to come from behind and beat their strong opponents 2-1 at home.

Thai Captain Teerasil Dangda opened the scoring for the visitors in the 33rd minute with a header from a left-wing long pass.

However, with tireless effort, the hosts scored two consecutive goals within only five minutes in the second half.

Rizky Pora punished Thailand’s mistake in the 65th minute with an equaliser. He cut the pass by a Thai player and fired a shot outside the penalty area on the left. The ball hit the back of a Thai defender and converted into a goal.

Five minutes later, Indonesia were given a free kick from the right wing. Hansamu Yama made a jump and headed a devilish goal to take his home team the 2-1 lead.

Inspired by the lead, Coach Alfred Riedl’s players strengthened attacks to widen the gap, but they did not succeed in converting any additional goals.

The 2-1 win gives Indonesia a big advantage before the second leg, scheduled to be held in Thailand on Saturday to decide the tournament’s champions.

Chelsea, Man City fined over melee

Premier League leaders Chelsea and Manchester City have been fined over the touchline brawl that erupted at the end of their recent league game, the Football Association announced on Tuesday (Dec 13).

Chelsea were fined £100,000 (US$126,760) and City £35,000 for “failing to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or refrained from provocative behaviour”.

A shoving match ensued after City striker Sergio Aguero launched himself at David Luiz towards the end of Chelsea’s 3-1 win at City on December 3. Aguero and his team-mate Fernandinho were sent off.

“Following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing, Manchester City and Chelsea have been fined £35,000 and £100,000 respectively after both admitted a breach of FA Rule E20(a),” the FA said in a statement.

Aguero was given a four-game ban for his foul on Luiz, while Fernandinho got a three-game suspension for shoving Cesc Fabregas over an advertising hoarding.

Chelsea’s win was their eighth in a nine-game winning streak, while City tasted defeat at home for the first time under manager Pep Guardiola.
