Seven U23 players ousted from ASIAD 17 line-up

Coach Toshiya Miura has officially reduced the men’s football U23 squad roster for the upcoming Asian Games competition to just 20 players, cutting it by seven.

The seven players failing to meet the Japanese coach’s requirements are Khac Ngoc, Sy Sa, and Ngoc Duc (Song Lam Nghe An FC), Van Thuan and Minh Hai (Hanoi FC), Van Thanh (Hanoi T&T FC) and Anh Tuan (SHB Danang FC).

The reductions were made following a friendly match between Vietnam’s U23 squad and the national team on September 2.

U23 Vietnam are scheduled to fly to Incheon, the Republic of Korea, on September 11 for ASIAD 17 clashes from Sept. 18 to Oct. 4.
According to a recent draw in the men’s football event, Vietnam will play Iran and Kyrgyzstan in Group H.

Bao signs deal to coach Thanh Hoa next season

Coach Vu Quang Bao has agreed to lead V-League’s Thanh Hoa in the 2015 season.

Bao, who bid farewell to Quang Nam last week, will arrive at Thanh Hoa in the coming days. His one-year contract will be extended every year based on the performance of the team, which finished third in the 2013-14 season.

“Several clubs wanted my autograph, but after careful consideration, I found Thanh Hoa to be the best for me,” said Bao, who was expected to lead his new team to a better performance in the coming season.

The Nghe An Province-born coach will receive VND500million (US$23,800) to be Thanh Hoa’s manager and a VND50 million (2,380) salary per month. However, in case the team drops out of the top three, Bao could only pocket VND250 million ($11,900).

The former coach of Vietnam national team Coach Hoang Van Phuc to lead QNK- Quang Nam

Coach Hoang Van Phuc has confirmed this that he has agreed with Quang Nam after a period of time to discuss. According to him, Quang Nam was full of desire and it would be great for him to start to lead Quang Nam in September.

QNK- Quang Nam had spent two seasons under Vu Quang Bao’s direction. He lead Quang Nam to the champions of first division in 2013. In 2014 season, QNK Quang Nam has played well in V-League when they caused other big teams much troubles, however their performance was getting worse when they only stood at No.8 position.

QNK Quang Nam quickly supplied pillars for teams. Mac Hong Quan, Patiyo, Huynh Quoc Anh were invited to join in. However, Coach Vu Quang Bao suddenly ended his contract, then QNK Quang Nam must find another replaced one.

Coach Hoang Van Phuc was seen as a suitable option because he has experiences in first division, V-League as well as national team. QNK Quang Nam continued to develop their strategy before new season sothat they aimed to  long and stable goals.

Official: McArthur completes Crystal Palace move

The Wigan midfielder, who won the FA Cup with the Latics in 2013, returns to the Premier League for a transfer fee reported to be a record for Neil Warnock’s side

Crystal Palace have completed the siging of Wigan midfielder James McArthur for an undisclosed fee.

The Scotland international has signed a three-year deal at Selhurst Park, with reports suggesting that the Eagles have paid a club-record fee for the former Hamilton Academicals man.

McArthur made 155 appearances for the Latics since joining in 2010 and Wigan boss Uwe Rosler admitted that he was reluctant to allow the 26-year-old to depart the Championship club.

“James is a fantastic professional, we wanted to keep him but the offer was a very good one and we have made a decision which we feel is correct for the long-term benefit of the club,” he told the club’s official website.

Goal understands that Palace beat off interest from newly promoted sides Leicester City and Burnley to secure the 2013 FA Cup winner’s signature.

He becomes the club’s second new signing on transfer deadline day after Zeki Fryers joined from Tottenham.

VN to face Australia in AFF Cup

Viet Nam will play Australia in tomorrow’s Group B opening match of the ASEAN Football Federation’s (AFF) Nuti Food U19 Cup at Ha Noi’s My Dinh National Stadium.

p26

Viet Nam will play Australia in tomorrow’s Group B opening match of the ASEAN Football Federation’s (AFF) Nuti Food U19 Cup at Ha Noi’s My Dinh National Stadium.

It will be a rematch of two teams who met nearly a year ago in the qualifying round of the Asian U19 Championships in Malaysia, with Viet Nam winning, 5-1.

Australia arrived here yesterday and are seeking to avenge their loss with a number of changes in their line-up.

Simon Roberts, head of the Australian team, told reporters at Noi Bai International Airport that his team would be competing against Viet Nam with their strongest players.

The Cup will be Australia’s last test before the Asian championship in Myanmar next month.

Coach Paul Okon has kept only eight members of the team that lost to Viet Nam, including captain Christopher Josif Hagi Gligor and midfielders Christopher Naumoff, Scott Robert Galloway and Rafael David Jimenez Serrano.

Daniel de Silva is the most wanted player among the Australians, as he was considered a prodigy of the country, with a transfer fee of US$2.5 million.

Silva, the A-League’s youngest player when he turned professional at age 15 in 2012, said he would score to beat Viet Nam.

He has been a member of Serie A’s AS Roma jersey since March but is on a one-year loan to Perth Glory, his original club, for more experience.

Awer Mabil, 19, is another goal hunter of the young Socceroos.

Mabil recently scored four goals in Australia’s friendly tour of America and was voted the best young player of Australia in 2012-13.

Apart from Silva, Harry Ascroft and Peter Skapetis are playing for clubs in the Netherlands and England while the rest are competing in the A-League.

Roberts said the Nuti Food Cup lured strong teams such as Thailand and Japan, as well as the hosts.

He said it is difficult to judge the power of all the teams, but Australia is set to have best result here.

Roberts admitted that his squad, whose performance has improved over that of last year, must beat the hosts in the first match and get a good result against Japan in the next game to enter the semi-finals.

But the hosts are prepared for another win. Most of their players are from Hoang Anh Gia Lai – Arsenal JMG Academy, and they have added only two new players.

Coach Graechen Guillaume has called on Tran Anh Thi, who can play centre-back and midfielder, and Tran Minh Vuong, the V-League’s best young player, to provide support in defence, considered Viet Nam’s weakest point as seen in recent competitions.

Viet Nam won a silver medal in the recent ASEAN Youth Football Championship in Brunei and trained hard through the September 2 holiday to ensure that they were in tip-top shape for the 10-day event.

The team flew from Pleiku City to the capital city yesterday and will train for one day at My Dinh before their first match.

Japan, also bracketed in Group B, brought only 17 players here, and most of them are substitutes. Coach Suzuki Masakazu said other players were taking part in ongoing competitions in their respective domestic leagues and could not leave their clubs.

However, Japan is still considered a powerful team and is playing on a higher level than ASEAN.

Japan will play their first match against Australia on September 7

The 28-year-old has scored 11 goals in 20 appearances for Monaco after joining from Atletico Madrid for a fee of around 50 million euros ($65.70 million) last year.

Colombia international Falcao, who missed the World Cup after suffering a serious knee injury, had been linked with several top European clubs including Real Madrid.

Falcao will compete with regular striker Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie for a place in Louis van Gaal’s new-look United side.

Southampton

“The stripes are back!” Southampton announced when they launched their new kit. And they’re not messing around: you even get a choice of vertical (home) or horizontal (away) stripes this season.

Stoke City

Stoke saved quite a lot of money on their away kits this season by buying up a load of Arsenal third kits which hadn’t printed properly, turning them inside out, and popping on a new badge. Genius!

The photographer tasked with making the very dull home strip look interesting decided that three exploding chimneys would do the job nicely. And who's to say he or she was wrong?

Sunderland

One day, Sunderland’s shirt designers will realise that the club’s ‘Black Cats’ nickname gives them a great opportunity to come up with an exotic and exciting shirt. Today is not that day.

Swansea

The Swans otherwise solid shirts are still encumbered by those crackpot advertisers’ logos carrying the strangest and most indecipherable writings since the Dead Sea Scrolls turned up in that cave.

Tottenham

No complaints or comments for the home kit, but are we really the only ones puzzled by the ‘guitar string’ look on that away kit? We await with keen interest a fully-functioning musical version which will let fans play ‘Stairway to Heaven’ on the terraces as Mauricio Pochettino leads them to the title. Or ‘Paint it Black’ when they end up in the bottom half of the table. Either way, really.

West Brom

Full credit to the Baggies for turrning their new kit into a party featuring the winner of a Michael Sheen lookalike contest, Ben Foster in training for a post-football career as a traffic policeman, and a man paranoid about underarm odour.
West Ham

A very nice retro look for the Hammers’ kits this year. I’m sure they had this exact thing back in 1989 or thereabouts. It’s a bit like getting your new car tax disc and being sure that they’ve used the same colour a few years back.

Hull City Tigers

No surpises with the main kit, but that goalie kit – what a showing! Looking like a bizarre mish-mash of Dairy Milk and Quality Street, Hull have produced the finest purple gear since the heyday of the Roman Senate. Magnificent. And the perfect answer to the question posed earlier in the Aston Villa pic.
34fa4590-2478-11e4-b023-51679edbf82b_hull2Here’s another look at that purple magnificence. What striker would dare put a shot past that keeper? Surely, Hull will go through the season unbeaten; the Untouchable Tigers are ready to claim a unique place in football history.

Leicester City

We’ve yet to decide if “King Power” is some sort of washing powder, kids’ cartoon or a forthcoming menu item at a Chinese takeaway in Leicester city centre. (“Can I get a King Power Chicken and veggie chow mein please?”). What we can say without fear of contradiction is that it’s not good news when your funny sponsor’s name is more interesting than the kit it’s splashed across.

Unlike their home kit, Liverpool's third kit is not classic or understated or anything. Instead, they're asking their players to get kitted out in giant boxes of Kleenex.

Just like the champions themselves, good looking and slick – particularly the dark blue change kit with the whole dithered colour thing going on.

Manchester United

Ye Gods, what have they done with the size of that ridiculous logo? The more svelte players on the team will find the C and T of Chevrolet stretching round under their armpits from the looks of things.

You can't argue with success, though: no doubt using those awful Chevy logos as aiming targets for long-range passes, United have looked very good in pre-season. And as this photo shows, it's the only United shirt that Marouane Fellaini has scored in.

Let’s leave aside the bizarre plunging neckline for the home kit and concentrate on the fact that the awful away kit looks more like a pajama t-shirt top that you’d find in the sale at Marks & Spencers.

QPR

Arsenal complete late Welbeck swoop

Arsenal have announced the signing of England international forward Danny Welbeck from Barclays Premier League rivals Manchester United for an undisclosed fee.

281213welbeck

The 23-year-old, who is currently with Roy Hodgson’s national squad ahead of fixtures against Norway and Switzerland, has signed a long-term deal at the Emirates Stadium to become Arsene Wenger’s fifth summer signing – with the deal announced almost two hours after the initial transfer deadline had passed.

He leaves United after coming through the ranks at Old Trafford – developing his craft with loan spells at Preston and Sunderland – but new Red Devils’ boss Louis van Gaal has allowed the player to leave in search of regular first-team football.

With Arsenal currently missing crocked duo Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott, Welbeck is likely to take on the mantle of playing in a central attacking role for Wenger – with a home game against Manchester City a potential debut for the striker.

Welbeck made his United debut in 2008 and went on to make 92 league appearances for his home-town club – scoring 20 goals.

He lifted the Premier League once and also collected League Cup and FIFA World Club Cup winners’ medals under Sir Alex Ferguson.

When Ferguson retired and was replaced by David Moyes, Welbeck scored a brace in Moyes’ first league game – a 4-1 win at Swansea.

But the local lad was never able to hold down a regular first-team place at United, especially in his favoured main striker role, and has moved to FA Cup holders Arsenal – who completed the deal despite Wenger being in Rome on Monday for a charity football event.

There was believed to be serious interest from the Gunners’ north London rivals Tottenham – but they only wanted to take Welbeck on loan with the lure of Champions League football also a likely deciding factor for the player.

He joins fellow forward Javier Hernandez in leaving Old Trafford and the Red Devils tweeted their best wishes to their former man.

“Danny Welbeck has signed for Arsenal after 29 goals in 142 appearances for #mufc. Good luck for the future, Danny,” a Tweet on their official account read.

He becomes the fifth summer addition to Wenger’s squad – with Alexis Sanchez, David Opsina, Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers already on board.

There were also a couple of outgoings from north London as Ignasi Miguel moved to Norwich, with Ryo Miyaichi signing on loan at FC Twente.
