Brazil survive nervy shootout to beat Chile

Brazil squeezed through to the quarter-finals of the World Cup after coming within a whisker of going out against an accomplished Chile side.

Brazil celebrate after defeating Chile in a penalty shootout during the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil round of 16 match between Brazil and Chile

Neymar’s penalty in the shootout proved decisive when Chile’s ex-Nottingham Forest, West Brom and Brighton defender Gonzalo Jara smashed the final spot-kick against the post.

The win – 1-1 after extra time and 3-2 on penalties – keeps Brazil’s dreams alive of winning a World Cup on home soil – and their record of not losing a competitive match at home since 1975.

Chile had taken Brazil all the way in Belo Horizonte, dominating for long spells of the second half and nearly snatching it at the death through Mauricio Pinilla’s strike which struck the crossbar.

Brazil had taken the lead through a goal awarded to David Luiz – even though it appeared to come off a Chile player – before Chile netted a deserved equaliser through Alexis Sanchez.

Brazil’s win also saved English referee Howard Webb from becoming the country’s public enemy number one after he found himself at the centre of huge controversy when he disallowed a goal by Brazil forward Hulk for handball.

If Brazil had enjoyed the rub of the green from officials in previous matches – something that had been flagged up by Chile – there was no danger of such an accusation being made against Webb.

He had also turned down a penalty claim by Hulk, as well as one by Chile’s Eduardo Vargas, while Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari was furious he did not take a tougher line on some forceful challenges on Neymar.

It was Neymar who was the man at the centre of most of the action for Brazil in the first half but it was Marcelo who shone first with a skilful turn on the edge of the box that fooled his marker and earned the Real Madrid full-back space to send a low shot just a yard past the post.

Chile looked threatening on the break but Brazil dominated possession and took the lead in the 18th minute – claimed by Luiz though probably an own goal.

Neymar’s corner was headed on by Thiago Silva and it initially looked as though former Chelsea defender Luiz finished at the far post but replays appeared to show it went in off Jara.

That should have been the signal for Brazil to assume total control but instead Chile pounced on a shoddy mistake to equalise.

Hulk messed up a return to Marcelo’s throw in by their own touchline, Vargas snapped up the ball and found Sanchez who neatly slotted home his second goal of the tournament.

Neymar continued to look Brazil’s biggest hope and his header from Oscar’s cross just bounced off a defender’s arm which diverted the angle just enough to take it past the post.

Oscar found his range and his brilliant cross-field pass found Neymar again threatening but he dallied, Chile scrambled the ball clear but it ricocheted off Fred and just over the bar.

A dipping strike from distance by Dani Alves was turned over by Claudio Bravo, before Brazil’s out-of-form striker Fred made perhaps the most embarrassing miss of the World Cup so far, miss-hitting the ball hopelessly just before the break.

But Brazil always looked vulnerable and another error, by Luiz Gustavo this time, saw Sanchez threaten again but Luiz managed to hurl himself in to block for a corner.

The second half saw Brazil frustrated by nerves and by Webb, while Scolari’s decision to push Neymar further forward saw him drop out of the game.

Then came the controversy. Brazil believed they had gone in front after Marcelo’s long ball was brought down by Hulk, who then sliced it into the bottom corner, but it was wiped off by an assistant’s flag who said the striker controlled it with upper arm. It was a controversial decision and to rub salt in the wound, Webb booked him.

Chile then began to assume an air of superiority while Brazil looked worried, and were grateful to a wonderful save by Julio Cesar to turn aside what looked a certain goal for the excellent Charles Aranguiz.

Former Manchester City striker Jo came on for Fred and looked destined to score straight away but somehow missed, then Neymar’s flicked header was straight at Bravo.

The Chile keeper stood up strong again after brilliant work by Hulk, but it was Brazil who were relieved to take the game to extra time.

Oscar had a half-chance with a header, Bravo kept out Hulk but it was Chile who nearly snatched it at the death but Pinilla’s blistering strike crashed back off the crossbar.

No plane of cash for Nigeria bonus row stars

The Super Eagles had been the latest African team to protest over how much they were being paid by their FA, but an NFF official insisted they will not copy Ghana’s solution.

Nigeria’s bonus row will not be sorted by flying in a “plane of cash”, according to a statement from a Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) official, in an apparent dig at Ghana.

Ghana’s president had to send €2.2 million over the Atlantic Ocean in a bid to persuade the Black Stars to play their final Group G game against Portugal, which they ultimately lost 2-1, resulting in World Cup elimination.

Nigeria, who finished second in Group F to reach the last 16, had so far avoided money rows which had clouded their participation in the Confederations Cup a year ago, but they refused to train on Thursday in a bid to get their bonuses fast-tracked.

However, on Friday the Super Eagles were back in training ahead of Monday’s clash with France and, although Nigerian officials refused to confirm if the players had been paid, there will apparently be no further protestations.

“There are no problems,” a NFF press officer said in a statement. “The players are not owed any money.

“A meeting took place on Thursday involving the players and the coach. No plane with cash will be flown in.”

Nigeria have not been involved in the World Cup knockout phase in 16 years and will be hoping to reach the tournament’s quarter-final stage for the first time in their history.

Should Stephen Keshi’s men cause a major upset by defeating Didier Deschamps’ unbeaten France side, they will face either Germany or Algeria in the last eight for a place in the semi-finals.

‘Portugal wore Ronaldo like a diamond ring they never had’

The Real Madrid forward has been criticised by a coach in his homeland for his failure to believe in his international team-mates

429530_heroa

Cristiano Ronaldo has been lambasted by Manuel Jose for treating his Portugal team-mates like “subordinates” following their group stage World Cup exit.

The Real Madrid forward was diagnosed with tendonitis of the knee ahead of the tournament and was far from his best as Paulo Bento’s men finished third behind USA and Germany in Group G.

And the outspoken Jose, who has coached the likes of Sporting Lisbon, Benfica and Vitoria de Guimaraes in the Primeira Liga, has now delivered a stinging critique of Ronaldo’s contribution in Brazil.

He said: “He is a fantastic player but every time he speaks he comes out with a blunder.

“He ended up saying that he never believed in the team. If he does not believe in the team, then he doesn’t believe in his team-mates.

“Portugal have been carrying the ‘world’s best’ like a diamond ring that we never had. The other players were treated like subordinates. Completely.”

Despite carrying an injury, Ronaldo still managed to score a goal against Ghana and provide a fine late assist for Silvestre Varela in the second group match against the United States.

Belgium rocked by Vanden Borre loss

The defender will play no further part in the World Cup after being stretchered from the field during his nation’s 1-0 win over South Korea

Belgium coach Marc Wilmots has revealed on Twitter that right-back Anthony Vanden Borre will miss the rest of the World Cup through injury.

Wilmots opted to rotate his squad for Belgium’s final Group H game against South Korea on Thursday, and handed a start to the defender, who had previously been deputy to Toby Alderweireld.

The Red Devils won 1-0 to win the group, but saw Vanden Borre stretchered from the field at the Arena Corinthians with a problem that is set to keep him out for the foreseeable future.

“(There is a) crack in (the) fibula (of) @AvdBorre,” Wilmots posted on his official Twitter account on Friday.

“Anthony will no longer be able to play at the World Cup but remains with the team.”

Vanden Borre, 26, made his international debut in 2004 and has since racked up 26 appearances for the national side.

Belgium are one of only four teams, along with Argentina, Colombia and Netherlands, to leave the group stage with a 100 percent record.

They will face the United States in the last-16, who finished second in Group G, at the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador on July 1.

Liverpool agree €31m Lallana fee with Southampton

The 26-year-old England international’s agent confirmed a medical took place on Merseyside on Friday, and his move from Southampton could be completed as early as Saturday

Liverpool have agreed a €31 million [£25m] fee with Southampton for Adam Lallana.

The 26-year-old’s agent confirmed that the England international underwent a medical on Merseyside on Friday, with hopes that a deal could be confirmed as early as Saturday morning.

“We are getting closer,” David Manasseh told Sky Sports on Friday afternoon. “We are nearly there on the personal terms and [Lallana] is doing a medical at the moment.

“Hopefully, we’ll have good news for Liverpool fans probably tomorrow morning.”

The winger is keen to join Brendan Rodgers’ side in order to play Champions League football.

Liverpool’s initial €25m [£20m] bid for Lallana, which was made on the final weekend of the Premier League season, was rejected by Southampton.

Mauricio Pochettino was also keen on bringing Lallana to Tottenham but Spurs were reluctant to rival Liverpool’s pursuit of the player.

Lallana, who appeared in all three of England’s World Cup group fixtures, will be Liverpool’s third signing this summer following the arrival of Rickie Lambert from Southampton and Emre Can from Bayer Leverkusen.

Lallana’s former club Bournemouth will be due €8m [£6.25m] once the transfer is completed, as they have a 25 per cent sell-on clause in the star’s contract.

Manchester United to launch £25m bid for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera

MANCHESTER UNITED have revived their interest in Athletic Bilbao star Ander Herrera, but face a race against time to get the deal done.

Athletic_Bilbao_Ander_Herrera_Manchester_United-384265

According to reports in Spain, new United manager Louis Van Gaal has instructed executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to launch a £25m bid for the Spanish midfielder.

The offer from United is unusual due to the fact that Herrera’s current contract contains a £30m release clause, which will increase to £35m at the end of this month.

It is extremely unlikely that Bilbao will accept United’s first offer for Herrera, who has two years remaining on his current deal.

116677

The unwillingness from United to activate Herrera’s release clause could see Van Gaal follow former manager David Moyes in missing out on the 24-year-old.

United and Moyes came close to signing Herrera last summer, but pulled out of the deal when Bilbao refused to lower his £30m release clause.

Bilbao want to keep hold of the former Spain U-21 international and will demand that United stump up Herrera’s full release clause.

And with his price set to rise to £35m at the end of June, United will face the challenge of attempting to agree a transfer with Bilbao and Herrera before the month is out.
