Sherwood blames pitch for Dnipro loss

Tim Sherwood highlighted the poor pitch at the Dnipro Arena as a main factor in his side’s inability to score in their Europa League defeat at the hands of Dnipro.

Spurs manager Tim Sherwood arrives at the ground

A late penalty from Liverpool target Yevhen Konoplyanka settled the first leg of this round-of-32 tie in favour of the Ukrainian side, although both teams were guilty of missing several chances – with Tottenham stiker Roberto Soldado the main culprit for the visitors.
The Spain striker turned a glorious 55th-minute chance over the bar from close range with Spurs in the ascendancy.
Sherwood, whose side were blocked by UEFA from training on the pitch on Wednesday, questioned the state of the surface after tasting defeat in his first European outing as a manager.
“He would expect to score,” Sherwood said of Soldado’s chance.
“I haven’t seen it again but I’m not sure he will be too complimentary about the pitch.
“I am not using it as an excuse, not for the chance, as both teams played on it but I am sure that it must have played some part in Robbie missing that one.
“The pitch was a disgrace, it is no excuse as both teams had to play on it but it is possibly the worst pitch I have experienced in a long time.”
Konoplyanka’s penalty came 10 minutes from time after Jan Vertonghen had brought down Brazilian striker Matheus inside the box, but Sherwood is certain his side will play better in the return leg at White Hart Lane next week.
“We could have played better,” he conceded.
“I didn’t think we were very poor but the disappointment that we never scored and we had some good opportunities to do that.
“We will score at the Lane, guaranteed, but it depends how many we will have to score.”
Former Tottenham boss Juande Ramos is in charge at Dnipro and he revealed he sent his side out to accrue a first-leg advantage, rather than look to draw the game with the hope of springing a surprise in seven days.
“Our target was to score as much as possible, a draw was not for us,” he said.
“Luckily we were just able to score the goal which gives us some advantage but we are pretty aware of the fact that London we will have 90 difficult and serious minutes. We will do our best and try to win in London.”
Ramos’ evening could have been even better had Tottenham goalkeeper Brad Friedel not made a number of good saves, including keeping out a deflected Konoplyanka free-kick late on.
Roman Zozulya hit a post with a header in injury time but Ramos is happy to be heading to England with a lead of any margin.
“I must say that the match today showed that both teams would do their best to win,” he said.
“We were pretty close to scoring the second goal which would be great help for us in London but still I have nothing but thanks to the players for what they did.
“Two-nil would have been really great for us. But we have 1-0 and we are looking forward to the second leg and will do our best there.”

Coach Nhan Thien Nhan (HV-An Giang): “We are just lacking of luckiness and we will comeback soon”

After 4 games, HV-An Giang stands at the bottom of table with only 1 point and therefore they are facing with crisis. However, the captain of this western football team are still optimistic.

Ngoại binh HV An Giang chơi chưa tốt

HV An Giang’s foreign players didn’t show off well

HV-An Giang has spent unsuccessful chain of games, and what’s the reason for this sir?

Actually, we are lacking of luckiness. We played well in recent games, for an example, facing with Thanh Hoa who are leading the table in contrary to us, however we played an excellent game when controlling most of time. Unfortunately, we weren’t successful in realizing chances into goals.

HV An Giang

HV An Giang

So, The reasons come from strikers?

Exactly. Felix still can’t take back his form while Dosso plays faintly. Our current playing style depends much on couple of strikers.

How about the others. Do you think your domestic players are young and less experienced than the others’ ones?

I do not worry about that. My men are also played in V-League. The most important thing is that the whole team is nearly new, therefore players need time to get familiar one another. To one club has players cooperated in many years it doesn’t matter. However, B-Binh Duong who are also facing same difficulties with us when changing most of team.

How about the future of HV-An Giang whether you will fall in crisis or not?

As what I said, we are decisive to perform well. The point is our scoring ability and luckiness. After having failed Thanh Hoa this week, I encourage my players that they had decision which should be stimulated in other matches. With one win our situation will be better, therefore, we will come back soon.

Thank you for this interview.

Atletico sneak valuable away win in Milan

Diego Costa popped up with a late winner as Atletico Madrid established the upper hand in their Champions League last-16 tie with AC Milan.

Costa

Milan bossed the first leg at the San Siro for long spells but ultimately the class of the Primera Division title challengers came to the fore as Costa capitalised on Ignazio Abate’s poor attempted clearance from a corner to nod home a priceless away goal in the 83rd minute.
For much of the contest it seemed Clarence Seedorf’s unrivalled Champions League pedigree might well guide Milan to a valuable win ahead of the return leg at the Vicente Calderon on March 11, but the Dutchman – four times a winner of this competition as a player – will have come away hugely frustrated after seeing his charges slip to a damaging 1-0 defeat.
The outcome might have been different had Milan not come up against the formidable presence of Thibaut Courtois in the Atletico goal, the giant Belgium international producing two brilliant saves in the first half to keep out first Kaka and then Andrea Poli.
Although much of the first half would belong to the hosts, it was Simeone’s men who threatened first, launching an attack straight from the kick-off and forcing the home defence into a hurried clearance from inside their own box with barely 20 seconds on the clock.
Milan quickly settled to their task though and with a quarter of an hour played forced Courtois into action for the first time, the highly-rated 21-year-old keeping out Kaka with a brilliant save, the slightest touch with the tips of his fingers redirecting the ball away from the top-left corner and out of play via a glance off the crossbar.
Yet the Chelsea loanee managed an even better stop two minutes later, somehow tipping the ball onto the post from Poli’s free header just six yards out.
The home side rode their luck in defence when Adel Taarabt tried to play the ball out from the back instead of kicking long, but Atletico were unable to capitalise.
And the action was soon down the other end of the pitch as a slick Milan attack ended with the ball at Kaka’s feet 10 yards out but his powerful side-footed effort curled just over the bar.
Three minutes from the break it was Mario Balotelli’s turn to step up as Milan continued to boss proceedings, the Italy international curling the ball just the wrong side of the upright with a first-time effort from 20 yards.
The game tightened up in the second period, although Kaka should perhaps have done better with a shot which was dragged wide of the upright just before the hour.
Balotelli then fired a free-kick into the wall with the continuation of the one-way traffic suggesting Atletico would be more than happy to escape the first leg with a goalless draw ahead of the return in Madrid.
Taraabt fluffed his lines when he was presented with a chance inside the area as the game ticked over into the final 20 minutes, although the momentum soon began to turn.
Raul Garcia stung the palms of Milan goalkeeper Christian Abbiati in the 75th minute as Atletico began to look a little more menacing going forward, and there was further concern for Milan in the 78th minute when Balotelli came off clutching his shoulder.
The game’s decisive moment arrived with seven minutes left and is one that Abate will want to quickly forget as it was his attempted header from Gabi’s corner that span high into the air and back towards his own goal. Costa still had plenty to do as he back-pedalled to get under the ball before leaping to nod in at the far stick – where a defender on the line should surely have been stationed.
The goal clearly deflated Milan, who had been good value for at least a draw, and when Adil Rami flashed a ferocious free-kick wide in the closing moments their last chance of salvaging a result had gone.

Classy Bayern overcome 10-man Arsenal

Arsenal saw goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny sent off after record-signing Mesut Ozil had missed an early penalty, and eventually went down 2-0 against Bayern Munich.

Bayern

There was a blistering start to the Champions League last 16 first leg clash at the Emirates Stadium – a year on from their last encounter in north London – and the holders could have snatched an early lead when Toni Kroos fired in a 25-yard effort towards the top corner, which Szczesny tipped over.
Yaya Sanogo had been a controversial selection in attack ahead of France striker Olivier Giroud, whose off-field actions have made headlines in recent weeks.
However, the summer free transfer from Auxerre – who has been out for several months with a back problem – saw a close-range shot palmed away by Manuel Neuer, before the German keeper saved a tame spot-kick from Ozil on eight minutes.
There was more drama just before the break as Arsenal goalkeeper Szczesny was shown a red card for bringing down Arjen Robben in the penalty area – only for full-back David Alaba to side-footed his spot-kick against the base of the post.
Bayern, though, went ahead on 54 minutes with a superb 20-yard strike from Kroos, which was whipped into the top corner past substitute keeper Lukasz Fabianski.
Arsenal tired heading into the final 20 minutes as Robben exploited the space in front of a jaded backline.
Eventually, the pressure told as substitute Thomas Muller headed in a late second goal to all but kill off the tie ahead of the return leg at the Allianz Arena next month – where Arsenal won 2-0 last season, but ultimately lost on away goals.
After a superb save from Szczesny to turn over a missile strike from Kroos – a reported summer target for Manchester United – which was heading to the top right corner, Arsenal went on the offensive.
Sanogo’s close-range shot was palmed away by Neuer and the keeper also stopped an angled drive from Santi Cazorla before the home side were awarded a penalty in the eighth minute.
Ozil’s brilliant reverse stepover bamboozled Jerome Boateng, who upended the Arsenal midfielder and was booked. However, the spot-kick from the inconsistent German playmaker looked tame as he chipped the ball down the middle following a two-step run-up and Neuer – a childhood friend of Ozil – beat it away.
England winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was inches away from connecting with a flick-on from Sanogo, which had Neuer racing out to the edge of the Bayern penalty area.
Arsenal were forced into a change on 31 minutes when left-back Kieran Gibbs hobbled off with what looked like a hamstring injury and was replaced by Nacho Monreal.
Bayern continued to probe and Robben’s low shot was blocked by Per Mertesacker following another patient build-up down the left.
Then in the 37th minute the Dutch forward latched on to a chip into the Arsenal box, which he touched past Szczesny and was brought down. Italian referee Nicola Rizzoli had little choice but to award a penalty and show the keeper a red card – the 100th accrued by the Gunners under Wenger’s managerial reign.
Szczesny made an offensive hand gesture as he trudged off down the tunnel and after a considerable delay as Cazorla was replaced by Fabianski, Alaba struck the base of the left-hand post.
Bayern made a change for the start of the second half when Boateng, walking a discplinary tightrope, was replaced by Marcio Rafinha.
Former Chelsea winger Robben continued to be roundly jeered by the home supporters and he cut inside to fire an angled shot which Fabianski saved.
Bayern made the breakthrough in the 54th minute when captain Philipp Lahm fed Kroos on the edge of the penalty area, and as the Arsenal defence backed off, he cracked a fine curling shot into the top-right corner.
Sanogo was shown a yellow card for clattering into Neuer, which Wenger claimed was overreaction by the German, before Fabianski got a hand to Robben’s low cross into the six-yard box – where Mario Mandzukic was loitering with intent at the far post.
Arsenal tired heading into the final 20 minutes, and Robben exploited the space to curl a 20-yard effort just wide before Mario Gotze’s powerful header was deflected behind.
Wenger made a change for the final quarter-of-an-hour as Tomas Rosicky replaced Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Bayern substiutute Muller looked to have been tripped by Laurent Koscielny in the right side of the penalty box, but the officials waved play on.
Lahm’s cross from the right was headed in by Muller in the 88th minute, and it was almost 3-0 in stoppage time when Kroos’ low shot struck the base of the post.

Rampant PSG put four past Leverkusen

Zlatan Ibrahimovic added another stunning goal to as PSG needed just 45 minutes to all but book their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

190214Ibrahimovic

The Swede was quiet, even off-colour, until scoring twice in four minutes at the end of the first half, converting a controversial penalty and then smashing a left-footed shot from the edge of the area straight into the top corner.
Blaise Matuidi earlier stunned the BayArena just three minutes into this first leg with the opening goal, and that set the tone for the match.
PSG had no need to get out of second gear against opponents who are no strangers to the latter stages of the Champions League but froze badly this time and appeared to accept their fate.
Leverkusen were reduced to 10 men in the 59th minute, defender Emir Spahic harshly sent off for two yellow cards, and their misery was complete when PSG substitute Yohan Cabaye added a late fourth with his first goal for his new club.
The hosts got off to a terrible start as Simon Rolfes gave the ball away in his own half to Matuidi, who started a move which ended with him running onto Marco Verratti’s through ball and side-footing a low finish into the left corner, with goalkeeper Bernd Leno slow in getting down.
The hosts were looking very nervous as their opponents pressed them high up the pitch and Leno had a let-off in the 11th minute after spilling a cross.
He dropped a ball in from Gregory van der Wiel straight at the feet of Ibrahimovic who blasted his shot from six yards straight at a defender.
At the other end Stefan Kiessling brought a save out of Salvatore Sirigu, who tipped his header over the top, but that was as good as it got for the home side, who lacked the invention to break down their visitors.
Leverkusen started to have more possession, but it was all in front of their opponents, who were so comfortable they were prepared to dribble out of their own area on occasions.
PSG’s second goal arrived from the spot in the 39th minute, but the penalty award was by no means clear-cut.
Maxwell cut the ball into the area from the byline on the left and Ezequiel Lavezzi went down under pressure from Spahic.
There were hardly any appeals from the PSG players, apart from Lavezzi, but the referee spotted a shirt pull on the Argentinian and pointed to the spot
Ibrahimovic’s penalty was perfect, fired into the bottom-left corner.
And the Swede stamped his brilliance on the match three minutes before the break. He started an attack, laying the ball out wide left to Maxwell, whose ball in was controlled and held up well by Matuidi. The midfielder laid the ball back to the edge of the area where Ibrahimovic blasted a first-time left-footed shot into the top-right corner. This time Leno had no chance.
Kiessling had penalty appeals waved away early in second half before things went from bad to worse for the Germans.
Spahic, booked in giving away the penalty, was shown a harsh second yellow card after going shoulder-to-shoulder with Lucas Moura.
The Bosnian centre-back looked to brush off the attentions of his opponent and, although his arm was high, Moura’s fall to the turf was theatrical in the extreme.
PSG were then denied a fourth by an offside flag after Matuidi’s shot was saved by Leno and then bounced in off Phillipp Wollscheid.
Leno did well to save with his legs from Javier Pastore, who slid in to get on the end of a low Ibrahimovic cross.
But substitute Cabaye made it four in the 88th minute, side-footing a shot into the top corner from just inside the area after Moura had laid Maxwell’s cross into his path.
It left PSG all but in the last eight, with Leverkusen needing to stage the greatest second-leg fightback in Champions League history to deny them.
